The final installment in our Watchlist refresh round-up has us examining the options up front, where we find the clamour for the template lineup is en vogue. Such is the form of the heavy-hitters, our forward lines almost pick themselves with five clear candidates emerging – Robin van Persie is, however, not amongst them.

There’s little argument that Fantasy managers need to consider arming themselves with a Liverpool striker. The dilemma is, of course, which of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge should be the target. Right now, it’ s almost impossible to separate the two but, for now, we’re coming down on the side of Sturridge, with his Uruguayan strike partner showing just a little bit of rust when it comes to his shooting on his two-goal return at the Stadium of Light.

Sturridge delivered both of Suarez’s goals on a platter in the 3-1 win, earning himself a brace of assists to go with a first-half goal. That demonstrated that the England man could keep pace with Suarez and, for now, with the price difference favouring Sturridge, that’s enough to just give him the edge. Saturday’s events at Anfield could swing that back to Suarez, however.

Those two top the Watchlist rankings, leaving United’s Wayne Rooney and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud to battle it out for our attentions. A slight injury concern and David Moyes’ obvious options to rotate Rooney in the weeks to come just give Giroud the edge, with the Frenchman holding in third following his assist in the win at Swansea. The Gunners man is without a goal in his last two and will need to get back in the saddle at West Brom this weekend if he is to avoid a sudden cull, such is the competition for a place in our forward lines.

Romelu Lukaku’s emergence in Monday night’s 3-2 win over Newcastle added to that fierce scramble for our striker slots. The Belgian is, without question, a major consideration given his form and price point. Enthusiasm is tempered somewhat by the trip to City this weekend but, following that, the Goodison clash with Hull will surely lead to increased investment. While he doesn’t boast the kind of favourable fixtures that bless the Liverpool pairing and Rooney, we’ve every reason to believe that Lukaku will prove a handful for any rearguard and offer points potential that could well keep pace with the heavy-hitters currently ranking above him.

That all means that both Robin van Persie and Roberto Soldado drop out of our top five. For Van Persie, his recent lack of pitch time has been hugely damaging. With Rooney scoring consistent points via his dead-ball strikes, the outlay for Van Persie can hardly be justified, particularly given the current trend that makes three strong scoring forwards the tactic of choice. Those holding the United man will need to see an upturn in form that surpasses Rooney and the Liverpool pair for him to prevent more owners from jumping ship. Blank at Sunderland and we would anticipate major sales over the international break.

Soldado is another striker of huge potential who is currently struggling to convince. The two spot-kick goals that opened the season perhaps disguised the fact that the Spaniard was taking his time to adjust. Spurs are creating chances, they’re just not resulting in goals and, while we see an upturn in fortunes for Soldado, it’s questionable if he can currently be backed above the established form strikers right now.

Indeed, there’s a strong argument that both Rickie Lambert and Loic Remy should be above the Spurs man in our rankings. Both notched in Gameweek 6, with Remy now having scored three in three matches for Alan Pardew’s Magpies. Lambert has the fixtures to boost his tally further, with St Mary’s meetings with Swansea, Fulham and Hull in the next five. Remy is not so blessed and will need to show fixture proof form in his next two home encounters with Liverpool and Chelsea.

The 7.5 spend on either Lambert or Remy could, arguably, be the minimum outlay on a forward right now given the consistency in the higher price brackets. Budget options are available but perhaps not advisable as investments. Cardiff’s Frazier Campbell has fixtures that could see him add to his two-goal tally thus far, although there is some threat from Peter Odemwingie here if Malky Mackay chooses to field Craig Bellamy and bring the Nigerian inside.

With Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez an uncertain starter, it leaves us looking at Darren Bent of Fulham at 6.5, Andreas Weimann of Villa at 6.0 and Sone Aluko of Hull at 5.0 as options. West Brom’s Saido Berahino, at just 4.5 in the FPL, is another candidate to monitor. Offering a rock-bottom budget option, if he can cement a starting role over both Nicolas Anelka and Shane Long, he would certainly provide an option for those requiring to free up frunds from their forward line.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Repost now the pages have slowed down.

MJ's Talking Point: Timing your Transfers

What is the best strategy with regard to timing of transfers? In other words, should you do your transfers early to maximise team value or leave it late in order to get maximum information?

Over a number of weeks, the extra price rises secured, or drops avoided, can add up to a big difference in Team Value, which will give you more options.

On the other hand, each early transfer comes with a risk. That player could get injured in a midweek Eurpoean or Cup game. Or another member of your squad could get crocked, leading to an unwanted hit. Some unexpected bad news could be revealed at the Friday pressers. So, is this extra risk worth the building of team value?

There are probably four main approaches to this, in descending order of risk and team value building potential:

    1. Do your transfers as soon as possible, which may be on the Saturday night if a price is rising. This is risky because some of your squad will probably be playing Sunday or Monday, let alone midweek, but you never miss a price change

    2. Do your transfers early in the week, so after your players have played but before any midweek games if necessary to catch price changes

    3. Wait until any midweek games are safely out of the way but then do your transfers if prices are changing, rather than waiting until the deadline

    4. Don't do any transfers until Friday at the earliest. You never know what the press conferences may bring!

So, which approach is the best?

I tend to make more early trades early in the season to build team value, whereas later in the season I might accept a price drop to get more information before making a decision.

TV is essential early on, imo, worth the odd hit and maybe even an early WC play as some people do. Otherwise you have limited options later in the season. My rank is pretty poor at the moment but that is a more down to late injuries than chasing value. At $104.4 I'm already relaxed about the likes of Lukaku and Suarez, I don't need to rush a transfer to get them in if I want them.

Once you have the TV cushion the ideal time to transfer is as late as possible. But, even then, If you have a player about to lose value and Lukaku, say, is the obvious transfer. Sure there is risk but it is a 0.4 value play so for me its worth the risk.

Not really any of the above...but both...Long term the plan should be to increase the quality of your squad not the TV of your squad...Do early transfers to build team value for the first five to eight weeks and then turn your attentions to the injury list or those slow in returns but with good underlying stats once you get to about 104 mill (the fallers) Start bringing those in and the savings will soon mount up and allow an overall increase in quality...This season has thrown up some great choices around now...Benteke/Johnson/Wallcott/Williams/Clyne...oh it's a long list..At that point your TV will nosedive back down but your quality of squad will rise....and you'll have differentials. Oh and you don't have to panic when doing that either so late transfers are easy.

I see that RMT is now recommending Giroud over Sturridge, whereas earlier it was the other way round. Most other pundits (including our captains poll) have been favouring Sturridge out of these two (if you haven't got Suarez). I wonder what has made RMT change its mind - is it because Liverpool might not be at full strength?

God knows. They are both going to do well, just get one of them, the difference in points will barely be worth the mental torture 😉

    Currently have
    Ozil Michu Barkley Moses
    Lukaku Rooney Suarez

    (Coleman, Gabbidon, Brady)

Worth doing Brady -> Whittingham for free, or just wait until next week (assuming he doesn't drop)? Would probably be on the bench anyway....

If Kim of Cardiff was dentally challenged like Suarez.."Kim Bucktooth" would be a decent fpl name

    Just thinking out loud 🙂

Captain choice is the toughest decision this week for me:

    Giroud
    Ozil
    or
    Rooney

With RvP and Suarez you do not need to care about your bench. Good to go!

Shaw, michu, BenArfa and now rumours of rvp are doubts though so they may come in to play....

my thinking is that if onw doesnt play wilson will come on.. benched Ben Arfa for second sub as rumours he may not stand and i would hate a 1 pointer

Rumours are rumours, at the end of the day I would say Moyes is now desperate for a win. RvP has to play.

I reckon once he's back I'll swap Rooney -> Benteke and stick to my Giroud Sturridge Benteke forward line for a fair enough while (barring Sturridge injury of course.)

I still reckon that'll be the best forward line to have this season.
