Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Kompany Worry for City

Vincent Kompany could be out for a month for City. Christian Benteke may be set to turn out for Belgium a week today. Ashley Cole is ruled out for England with a rib problem, Alan Pardew praises Hatem Ben Arfa’s response after being dropped, whilst Aly Cissokho signals his return from injury with a 90-minute run out for Liverpool’s Under 21 side:

Kompany Poised for Another Spell on Sidelines

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has indicated Vincent Kompany is expected to be sidelined for up to four weeks with a thigh problem. City revealed earlier in the day that scans had confirmed Kompany picked up the problem in Saturday’s win over Everton but while the club were uncertain of any timescale, Wilmots was a little more forthcoming in yesterday’s press conference for the national side.

The Scout Says: Having already seen his skipper spend time on the sidelines with a groin injury this term, Manuel Pellegrini is likely to court caution with Kompany’s latest injury setback. Ironically, City have managed just one clean sheet with the Belgian in the XI, compared to two in three games without him, though there’s no doubt that, as the schedule picks up on all fronts, his likely loss is a bitter blow. If, as expected, he is out for around a month, Kompany would miss the next three leagues games (whm, che, NOR), affording Joleon Lescott the chance to slot in alongside Matija Nastasic once again, with Martin Demichelis still also recovering from injury.

Cole Amongst the First Withdrawals

In addition to Kompany’s Belgium absence, the usual raft of international injuries are underway, with Chelsea’s Ashley Cole amongst the names involved. The left-back has withdrawn from England’s squad to face Montenegro on Friday with the rib problem sustained against Norwich on Sunday, whilst Republic of Ireland pair Jon Walters and Kieran Westwood have also called off with groin and shoulder problems respectively. Arsenal’s Tomas Rosicky has also been excused from the Czech Republic Squad for “health reasons” just days after returning to action for the Gunners.

The Scout Says: As always, seasoned Fantasy managers will look upon these withdrawals with a degree of scepticism. Cole was subbed off during Chelsea’s win at Norwich for tactical reasons – Jose Mourinho revealed post-match he was unaware of any problem prior to subbing off the England player. Walters has, however, failed to finish either of Stoke’s last two matches with the problem and could be one to monitor, whilst any possible absence for Westwood could bring Vito Mannone into contention at Sunderland.

Benteke Could Return for Gameweek 8

Reports indicate the Villa forward could be set for a rapid return to action over the international fortnight. Having joined up with the Belgium squad, Benteke has been ruled out of Friday’s game against Croatia but may be called into action for the following Tuesday’s showdown with Wales if required. Villa boss Paul Lambert has also aired his views on the situation:

“I trust Christian to do the right thing. He is probably stuck in the middle right now. But I’ve had a good chat with him and he will know himself what is the right thing for him to do. I trust him. But I won’t be happy if he plays for Belgium and comes back to me injured. I know he wants to play and get back into it as quickly as possible but he hasn’t been back on the training ground yet since picking up the injury. It’s only when he starts to kick a ball again that the test will come and he will know himself if it feels okay and whether he is ready to play.”

The Scout Says: A quick return to action for Benteke would give Fantasy managers plenty to ponder once the domestic program resumes. Having scored four times in his first four games, the big Belgian limped off early in the Gameweek 5 win at Norwich and his absence has seen over 640,000 Fantasy managers switch their affections to similarly priced options such as Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge. Prior to his hip injury, though, Benteke was the second most popular frontline option behind Robin Van Persie but the lay of the land has changed rapidly – with Romelu Lukaku and Luis Suarez also earning significant numbers of new owners over the last couple of weeks, Benteke is now down to just 8.9 in FPL, with an ownership sitting at 12%. Providing he proves his fitness, the big Belgian will surely barge his way back onto Fantasy radars ahead of a schedule that hands Villa three home games in the next four.

Fellaini Facing Wrist Surgery

Another of the Premier League’s Belgian contingent, the United summer signing could also be set to feature in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers just days after David Moyes left him out of Saturday’s win at Sunderland with a wrist injury. Reports suggest that Fellaini will still require surgery on damaged ligaments in “the near future”, however, with a possible three-week timescale expected.

The Scout Says: Despite his lack of impact this term, Fellaini still sits in over 7% of FPL teams as a result of last season’s exploits at Everton. His only start for the champions was back in Gameweek 5, when United were picked apart by neighbours City at the Etihad – Moyes is likely to retain faith in Tom Cleverley alongside Michael Carrick in the meantime but in terms of Fantasy interest in United’s midfield, it’s been all about Adnan Januzaj – over 91,000 FPL managers have drafted the 4.7 priced youngster in after his double against the Black Cats. Given that Carrick is the second most popular, with just over 300 new owners, highlights the faith we have in Fellaini and co right now, despite a run of three home games in the next four.

Pardew Praises Ben Arfa Attitude

Alan Pardew has revealed he was pleased with Hatem Ben Arfa’s attitude after dropping the Frenchman from the starting XI for the weekend trip to Cardiff. The Newcastle manager went on to insist he will continue to use a squad rotation policy after chopping and changing a number of times already this season:

“It was a great day in terms of the team. The players who got left out accepted it and contributed to the win. It was nice to see Hatem come on. He’s growing up. I was pleased with his reaction this week. I asked Hatem to do a defensive job. I don’t think I’ve ever asked him to do that before. He saw it through, so it was good news… It’s important that everybody’s pulling and trying to achieve the victory. Jonas Gutierrez came off the bench. We had not seen him for a while, but he did a great little job for us.”

The Scout Says: While Pardew has publicly made a point of singling out Ben Arfa, it seems the temperamental Frenchman could struggle to make an immediate return to the fold. His half-time withdrawal against Everton in Gameweek 6 saw a much-improved Magpies score twice without reply, whilst the 2-1 win against the Bluebirds highlighted the side’s greater all-round work ethic without Ben Arfa in the ranks. Indeed, with the fit-again Gutierrez now offering an option on the left of the front three, Pardew even has the option of moving the versatile Remy to the opposite flank – lessening the likelihood of an immediate return for Ben Arfa, in spite of his undoubted talents.

Cissokho Returns to Action

Liverpool’s on-loan left-back made a successful return from injury last night as the Reds Under 21s swept aside Tottenham 5-0.

The Scout Says: Sidelined since limping off just 21 minutes into his debut back in Gameweek 2, Cissokho’s comeback will have Jose Enrique’s Fantasy owners anxiously looking over their shoulders. The Spaniard has started six of the Reds’ seven league games so far and has managed over 100 minutes more than any other Liverpool defender as a result of a lack of competition but Cissokho’s availability could finally allow us to ascertain just which of the two is likely to be Brendan Rodgers’ first-choice left-back. Indeed, Rodgers’ recent switch to 3-4-1-2 makes the situation all the more intriguing – Cissokho, at 5.0 to Enrique’s 6.2, would be a hugely enticing proposition if he can force his way to the front of the pecking order.

Poyet Arrives at Sunderland

Sunderland have named Gus Poyet as the new man in charge at the Stadium of Light earlier today. The former Brighton boss takes the Wearside reins as the Black Cats look to recover from a run that leaves them with just a single point accrued from the opening seven fixtures – at least six points less than all but Palace so far.

The Scout Says: While a trip to Swansea is far from straightforward, the Uruguayan will be given the chance to win the fans over in his first home game in charge as Newcastle roll up in Gameweek 9. The Black Cats then have three road trips in four (hul, sto, avl), but with City, Chelsea and Spurs amongst their next visitors, the schedule is far from easy. Poyet will be looking to spark Adam Johnson and Emanuele Giacherrini into life on the flanks but with Steven Fletcher still sidelined with a dislocated shoulder, the burden of goals lies on the broad shoulders of Jozy Altidore – given that the US international is yet to score this season, it’s clear that Poyet has a considerable task on his hands.

Not many holes there at all. Perhaps save the transfer at least till after the internationals in case there are injuries? Its a seriously good team.

      Westwood's an interesting choice 🙂
May I ask why? Or has this just been from the beginning of FPL?

Siggy's not guaranteed starts, could be upgraded to Eriksen(Who I still like as a FPL prospect, contrary to many other's opinions) or traded for Paulinho. Not exactly the most exciting transfer though.

I was going to suggest bringing in Walker for your defence, but it seems perfect, no need to change IMO. Unless Toure's starts come under threat.

If Wally is fit, bringing him in for Ozil could be a nice transfer

Yeah, picked Westwood because of the SOT/SUN rotation and not knowing Di Canio would cause a terminal reactor core meltdown at over there.

Actually looking for a replacement, as Boruc will have a handful of less good fixtures coming up.

Personally I think AVB would be mental to drop Siggy. He has been our most dangerous player (100% goal involvement) so far this season, and don't think he will be dropped yet. Paulinho is not a bad shout though.

        Thanks. No confusion 🙂

Although I wonder what will become of Kolo Toure.

If they stick with the 352, they'd be playing 3 CBs, and they have Skrtel, Agger, Sakho, and Toure. Since Agger is back, I'm sure rotation will start to kick in?

          Possibly Toure > Walker?

    A) Next International Break or later ones
    B) Saved for DGWs (In future)
    C) The Holiday Season (Packed December schedule)
    D) Double Down with January Wildcard (using 2 WCs closeby, taking advantage of set of fixtures)
    E) Destroy your Rival (aimed at altering team, differentiating frm ML rival)
    F) In Case of Emergency (injuries, non-starters)

    For those considering Benteke:

I said it at the start, don't see Villa as your usual mediocre team. We seriously have goals in us (scored 3 V Arsenal, 3 V Man City, 1 V Chelsea, 1 V Liverpool) although we concede too many!

I fancy us to score against any team we play, home or away, and the creativity behind them will most likely be Benteke - The Premier Leagues Highest Scorer 2013!

After 3 consecutive GWs of Red Arrows. I need a break during this Int' Week.
    Here is my team
    Migs (Daniels)

    Silva Michu Oscar Ramsey
    Giroud Suarez Sturridge

    Subs: R.Morrison Mbiwa Chester

I would bet a lot of money that this team will not get a red arrow next week.
Defence is a worry long term, especially Mbiwa and double Spurs once their fixtures get tougher.
Maybe save this week, unless an international injury comes up, then downgrade a striker and upgrade a defender following week.

      It's a good team.

Mbiwa needs to be shipped but your funds are kinda limited to bring in someone decent. Dawson to a Swansea defender is a good bet as they have great fixtures. I'd probably save the FT though.

Anyone else considering Ivanovic as an alternative to JT?

I know JT is a BPs magnet, and is a goal threat.

But now that his price has risen to 6.2, you can get Ivanovic for just 0.3 more.
Isn't he more of an attacking threat with his forays down the right flank? Also a threat from set pieces, as we saw earlier in the season against Villa.

    What do you lads think?

That's true, as I stated above, one of JT's plus points.
But Ivan is a nice alternative, and is a stronger attacking threat IMO.

    Boruc / Davis
    Walker / Vidic / Enrique / Clyne / Wilson
    Eriksen / HBA / Moses / Michu / Jedinak
    Rooney / Sturridge / Giroud

Have 2 FT 1.2m in the piggy.

looking to get rid of HBA and moses, so have 14.6m to spend

    A) oscar + barkley

    B) walcott + 5.4m max (nothing stands out as brady injured - maybe januzaj)

Have you considered Barkley for the mid under 5.4m to go along with Walcott, or is he 5.5 now?

Wilson might not be guaranteed starts, and I believe he is injured, so you might want to think about looking at that, no need for immediate action though.

Oscar + Barkley sounds good IMO

    Baines and Januzaj

    or

    Eriksen and 4.5 def

leaning towards Baines and Jaz as I already have Clyne and there is no decent 4.5 def's. But I also have Rmorrison in my squad so would have two weak midfielders.

    Thanks guys

When starting Januzaj could be the best mid in the game. But I agree there is risk involved. Saying that I dont think anyone will be playing 5 mids this season so you only need 1 of them to start. And if Januzaj keeps starting you wont rotate him at all. Morrison basically bench fodder with some games to play if needed

He was not even close to being nailed on at the start and the people who risked it got the reward, now you got a kid with even bigger potential. I think everyone should take the risk considering the price. And the fact that both Joe Cole and Jarvis were benched last game in a big match vs Tott suggests Ravel could hold onto his place as well. Especially considering the result

Im taking value into account as well, check his stats from last game. His stats from the first start are compareable to Michu and Walcott. It was not like he scored with both of his shots he had 6 with 3 on target and loads of key passes too. Barkley is a kid too, playing for a slightly weaker side and still doing great- while he has yet to put up similar stats to Januzajs first start. The sample size is small, but id say it is all about PT with this kid

Barkley's been getting blooded for years.
He certainly won't be starting every week that's a great way to stunt his development and even if he did expecting him to perform like michu and walcott is ridiculous

Rooneys first season with everton 14 starts 19 sub appearences, I think that is about what we can expect. Especially considering they have no alternative for him. Just look at who the other options are- Young and Nani basically who both are absolutely horrible. I think he wont start the big games in the start but will play vs lower sides like SUN

Liverpool did not really trash them. Sturridge and Suarez both scored with every shot they had on the goal. Obviously I am getting carried away, but I have not been this exited over a youth player since I was watching Welbeck for the reserves. He is just that good. If he keeps getting games is a thing for many options this year, Siggy, Barkley(in the start), Lukaku(in the start for Chelsea), Some punts pay off some dont, at 4.7 you really cant go wrong with that much potential

Well you would say that as a liverpool fan, but I think Moyes, SAF and the England coach know a bit better and trust the man for a reason. I think the only reason he has a bad rep as he is percieved as a striker while scoring is clearly not his best ability

It is not a smart call for sure, just gut is telling me personally to do so. And the fixtures are getting a bit stiffer, Newcastle looked better last week and could be tougher at home, WBA has not gotten beaten by United and Arsenal in the last 2, than Arsenal Away, only FUL is the really appealing fixture and for that time Lukaku will be playing the worst defense in the league in cpl

It's quiet and I've just tried to help someone, so may as well post my team. Have 1 transfer I'm 100% set on doing, just wondering if people will suggest the same. 2FT, 3.7m ITB

    Speroni (Boruc)
    Toure, Chico, Zaba (Wilson, Clyne)
    Ramsey, Nasri, Ozil, Barkley (Brady*)
    Rooney, Giroud, Sturridge

Cool. Nasri to Michu is the trade I had in mind too. Nasri was a 2 week, "trying to be clever and differential" wildcard punt, when I should really have just stuck Yaya in and picked up his points and rises 🙁

Possibly, but he hasn't done much yet, might stick with Ramsey and Ozil and see what they do

      What's wrong with doubling up?
You either go cheap with Barkley, Brady, Amalfitano or Whittingham or you get the Tottenham mid of your choice.

Actually it would be tripling up, have Coleman aswell.. Tripling up didn't work out with Arsenal 😛

I have all three. I don't like tripling up, esp if it's not one of the big 4 (however everton are holding their own). But I think these players are by far the best value in their price ranges. Maybe not Coleman now his price has gone up so much. I may consider shipping him out of the lot.

After a terrible season so far WC is active, so please RMWCT.

    Boruc/vorm

    Chico /terry /ivanovic / clyne /Coleman

    Michu / oscar / adnan / Morrison (r) / ? Till cout back

    Suarez / lukaku /Tekkers

With swans and chels having easiest fixtures for next 5 I've doubled up.

Options still are there for fifth mid. Like cout on return so if planning that need a makeshift mud for a bit (8.7 at pres to spend) however I could get Walcott and then downgrade Ivanovo a 6m defender.

    Thoughts??

chelsea's not going to get that much of CSs... it's the attacking threat that counts...

u should try and keep yaya or walcott in your team Before u change him with Coutinho... i guess cutting one from the chelsea def should do it....

Does Boruc and Vorm rotate well.... what about Mcgregor..... have u given it a thought...

Your keepers don't rotate at all.

Defense is risky with doubling up, but could be profitable.

Wouldn't have both of Morrison and Adnan as they're not nailed on. Upgrade one to a cheapy mid who is (Amalfitano, Barkley etc).

      Strikers are fantastic.

enrique and kolarov too uncertain for my liking(terry too, but he'll haul the points anyway), everton defender without attacking threat? not a great option imo. Maybe benteke instead of giroud? not sure if ozil is worth the money either.

    Forwards dilemma ?

Im starting to think the best strategy is pick 3 of the top forwards and stick with them barring injury.

My reasoning is all of them are quality but will all have a dip at some stage , so the key is to remain patient because the chances are you jump ship and they then find form.
