Vigilant Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will be more than aware that bonus points are now being awarded differently. For the third successive season, a new system was introduced which, to some extent, moved the goal posts when it comes to which players benefit from the post-match supplementary points.

It’s already evident that the new Bonus Points System (BPS) has had an impact on where and how the points are shared out compared to last term’s EA Sports PPI (and the “man in a stand” votes from the sesaons before). On examination of the points earned so far, we’ve been able to pick up on one or two key trends here and there but, despite transparency from the FPL as to how it is calculated, the science of just how they arrive at the final BPS number has largely remained a mystery. We hope to address that.

Over the last six weeks I have been tirelessly poring through all of the raw data provided to us by Opta in the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area to find out exactly how players are boosting their BPS tallies beyond the bread and butter rewards for the likes of providing an assist, returning a clean sheet or scoring a goal.

In the first of three articles on this theme, we’ll begin by examining what is arguably the most profitable and purest means for players to bump their BPS – a strong pass completion ratio.

Just noticed the FPL have reached 3m+ players for the first time. I wonder how many are dead teams? 500k?

I was looking to replace Wilson as he looks in danger at Stoke.Looking at bonus points awarded, why isn't everyone looking at Jagielka instead of Coleman? I know Coleman scored (against Norwich GW1) but look at Jags' bonus points - 8! Third highest after Terry and Baines. And he gets 2 baps, in their last game even though they conceded 3 to City. (Coleman has only got 4bps). Think I'll take a plunge...

The assist was a major factor in the baps there. Distin has similar figures for 0.5 less.

Although Jags got an assist, isn't it still a bit strange he got 2 baps when City scored 3? Surely you would expect Lukaku to have got bonus for Everton, or a City player to have got them? Jags must be getting good stats...

Think the change in bonus has caught the regulars by surprise this year. Me included put all my money in midfield and up front at the start. It's clearly not the way to go.

              That's the spirit!

The Man City game was always likely to be a washout unless he sneaked a freekick, the Newcastle game was a little more disappointing. Unless you're enormously fluky you have to hold him long term to get the benefits, I struggle to have that level of patience!

I guess crosses don't count as a 'pass' in the sense of pass completion stats, otherwise his completion would surely be much lower. If I'm right that is good to know

You're absolutely right - crosses aren't counted as passes, now that's interesting. I assumed players who threw in a lot of crosses would suffer on the pass completion front but obviously that isn't the case.

Somehow still not happy with my team:

    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Terry Zabaleta Dawson Coleman (Whittaker)
    YayaToure Ramsey Barkley (Amalfitano Brady)
    VanPersie Suarez Giroud

    Wildcarded after DGW1
    0 FT (Recent GW8 Transfer - 7.2 HBA to 5.1 Amalfitano)
    Bank= 2.1m

Any suggestions for next GW trades:
    Coleman to which premium defender?
    YayaToure to Ozil?
    VanPersie down to ?

        Lol, it's understandable!

Nah, I said I see your logic getting him in hope for attacking returns, I just think the odds are on Chico's side to return more points than Rangel over say the next 5. Attacking returns are relatively rare, but given a few clean sheets Chico should be close to nailed for bonus points.

Fair point. That's the tricky thing for me this week, though, I think I prefer Everton more as a defence unit but these Swansea fixtures are just too good to ignore...

I think after failing to go with your Clyne advice last week I might just take you up on this Chico tip - at least if it all goes wrong then I've got someone else to blame 😉

Haha, not even sure why I'm selling him so much. I like to play the fixtures. Going on form Swansea doesn't have much to brag about in the clean sheet department, while Everton have been pretty solid. It's a tough one.

Yeah, it's true. He does seem to struggle more than I thought 😮 His BPS are pretty good, but Swansea as a team seem to get a lot of BPS, maybe because of their passing game, so his competition is for baps is tougher.

I think it's the potential for bonuses IF Swansea start keeping clean sheets. They haven't had many so far but that's at least partly down to fixtures.

The question is whether they will keep any cleanies with their upcoming glorious run. Someone yesterday doubted it because of Laudrup's style.

Right, but they've already kept a couple of clean sheets and he hasn't got much to show for it. If the fixtures are ripe for clean sheets they're probably ripe for some Swansea goals which limits the defensive bonus points. There's a much wider, more complicated picture than people are painting here.

Nah I agree with you, I have been getting a little carried away. I did look at the detailed stats now for those fixtures and like mentioned, he seems to be getting decent BPS but he has a lot of competition within the team for the baps, the attacking players are scoring well.

It's interesting that Ben Davies got the 3 BAPS in both clean sheet games. He scored in one of them, and if he hadn't, he and Chico would've been tied for 2 BAPS each.

Ok, so in the 7 matches to date, Chico has got 1 bonus point: earned in the WBA 0-2 Swa game. 3 points went to Davies (goal and a clean sheet) 2 points went to Hernandez (goal and assist)

Other than that he's barely come close to a bonus. In the other game you'd expect him to have been in contention (CPA 0-2 Swa) there were 6 team mates who got more BPS (he was the lowest of the back 4)

Is it me or is the Premier league becoming more physical again?

Lukaku and Benteke are mopping up, while the likes of Defoe and Eto'o seem to struggle, and with teams preferring to sign big centre forwards like Osvaldo, Soldado and Giroud to overcome stoke west ham type defences, it seems like we've taken a step back away from a European style of technical football. Even Suarez is a chode little toad if you see him in real life!

Perhaps slowing attacks and big defences are what's encouraging CDMs to come to the box and have a go themselves?

This ain't Godzilla. Size doesn't matter much. It does give you some sort of advantage since BPL's pace make the players look like running and tackling more than players from La Liga, Serie A or Bundesliga, but if PL is about physical, then Scholes won't be a legend, and remember that the League's arguably best player, the active, living legend, real Welsh Wizard, is skinny and only 5' 11".

I agree there's not a phenominal difference, perhaps just significant enough that it affects play sometimes. Scholes was a centre mid through and through, he was all about playmaking not really getting involved in attack or defense too heavily. I'm talking more about the forward options in the box

This is true. Normally id got for a attacking wing back to get the assists over a CB but with the 3 BPS for pass completion favours the CBs.

Also in the attacking table the person leading the way is someone i'd never have considered before but this adds to his appeal, albeit he's probably too expensive now.

Looking at Yaya, 4 goals in 4 different games = 8 baps. It the other 3, he got an assist last GW & got 2 baps. A goal = 6 BPS & an assist = 3 BPS. When not involved in scoring, baps unlikely to head his way.

PB around? Any info on whether Draxler and Kruse will start tonight?

As for England, Wilshere locked in a 3 way battle with Carrick and Lampard to partner Gerrard

It makes sense that they'd only have 2 spots in the middle of the park now that Sturridge + Rooney are both available. They have to start, and it's silly to use either on the wing.

Carrick is the (very) obvious choice to partner Gerrard.

A question on strategy for you and some advice on how to apply it specifically to my own situation.

Strategy: do you prioritise 'essential' players* IN or poor players OUT? I'm struggling to get my priorities straight for this rabble over the next few weeks:

    Migs (Lewis)
    Walker - Coleman - Vidic - Collins - Chester
    Michu - Eriksen - Barkley - Ramsey - Arnie
    Studge - Suarez - Lukaku

    Players who should leave:
Collins, Eriksen, Arnie, one of SAS, Ramsey perhaps

Players who ought to come in:
    Terry, Oscar/Hazard, Wally/Özil, Benteke

    Nice to haves:
    Chico/Rangel, a better keeper

e.g. SAS is probably fine for a while whereas Collins is dead. But I REALLY want Tekkers 🙂

    * There are no essential players, I used the word to add colour to the point

Poor players out first I guess.

Agree with the Tekkers move, No.1 priority for me when he's back.
Eriksen to Yaya for me but then I have Ozil.
Terry is a maybe but a Swan def is cheaper and they've great fix coming up

Tekkers is very hard to resist, especially with the upcoming fixtures.

Right about Swans but they're not going to keep as many cleanies as Chelsea and none of them have the goal threat of Terry. Hmmm.

I think the other way round: primarily only make transfers if there is a player I really want to bring in. If there is none, it is usually better not to make moves, you might end just changing poor to another poor.

I prioritize saving transfers. Obviously, the best solution is poor play out and essential players in.

In both cases you have to look at both ends of the transfer. If I had a player I didn't like much, I might prioritize "essential player IN" over a "dead player OUT".

Overall, I'd say I usually prioritize getting rid of the weakest playing link and try to not get too carried away about a player being essential, because right there definitely are no essential players.

In your case; no way I'd drop one of SAS before I dropped Collins.

One of SAS should become Benteke for you, whether in GW8 or 9.

Collins to Wilson definitely, if he' plays 60 minutes again after this. 😛

I won't bring Eriksen in now, but if i have him already, i'd hold onto him at least for another 2 GWs as long as he starts the match.
