With the international break behind us, it’s time to reacquaint ourselves with the Sky Sports game, assessing the recent run of Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point magnets and current market trends. As always, we also look ahead to the forthcoming Gameweek, offering our preferred captain setup.

Gameweek 7 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below is a match-by-match breakdown of the players who won the plaudits from the Sky Sports reporters last time out, earning five additional points for the Man-of-the-Match award.

FixtureMoTM
Man City vs EvertonDavid Silva
Cardiff vs NewcastleLoic Remy
Fulham vs StokePatjim Kasami
Hull vs Aston VillaCurtis Davies
Liverpool vs Crystal PalaceJordan Henderson
Sunderland vs Man UnitedAdnan Januzaj
Norwich vs ChelseaOscar
Southampton vs SwanseaArtur Boruc
West Brom vs ArsenalYoussouf Mulumbu
Tottenham vs West HamRavel Morrison

Looking at the spread of awards, midfielders continue to come out on top with a total of seven MoTMs out of the ten fixtures. The other three were shared equally with goalkeepers, defenders and forwards claiming one apiece. Quite a few budget friendly assets continue to stand out and look like good options in the coming weeks – Patjim Kasami (4.2m), Adnan Januzaj (4.2m) and Ravel Morrison (4.1m) look particularly strong if they can nail down consistent starting roles. Hull City’s Curtis Davies (4.5m) also deserves a mention as he has now achieved MoTM twice in seven starts along with three clean sheets and a goal earning him 34 points so far – a fantastic return for his price tag.

Gameweek 7 Bonus Points

Two Goalkeepers managed five saves or more – Cardiff’s David Marshall and Southampton’s Artur Boruc were the top shot stoppers with eight and seven saves respectively, both have now earned bonus twice so far this season.

In defence, a total of 11 players fetched bonus, eight for tackles and three for passes completed – Aston Villa centre-back Ciaran Clark was the closest to achieving both, just missing out with 53 completed passes, seven short of the required 60.

In midfield, 22 players picked up bonus – 13 for tackling and 11 for passes. England duo Tom Cleverly and Jordan Henderson were the two players to gain bonus for both. Aaron Ramsey (16bps) and Steven N’Zonzi (12bps) are the overall bonus point darlings.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout members can access all the data regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

SoldadoTottenham8.13.71%
HangelandFulham5.43.47%
RoseTottenham4.73.33%
Van PersieMan Utd102.79%

The international break has given Fantasy managers time to reassess their teams and the five most popular transfers out are listed above. Roberto Soldado (3.71%) and Robin Van Persie (2.79%) are the two big hitters making way – both forwards have failed to live up to expectations so far this season claiming only 54 points between them. By comparison, the top scoring player overall Daniel Sturridge has 70 points alone.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
LovrenSouthampton5.28.67%
RamseyArsenal5.86.08 %
LukakuEverton8.64.67%
SturridgeLiverpool9.23.90%
BainesEverton7.73.40%

Southampton’s centre-back Dejan Lovren has been the most sought-after player in the last two weeks with 8.67% of Fantasy managers fetching him in – with a total score of 52 points so far, he is the joint third highest scorer in the game and has represented outstanding value at just 5.2m. Everton’s form and fixtures sees Romelu Lukaku and Leighton Baines drafted in by just under 5% of managers, both look good for potential rewards in the coming weeks, starting with the Goodison clash against Hull this weekend.

Gameweek 8 Proposed Captain Strategy

Looking ahead to the armband options for Gameweek 8, we highlight three options and, with a Monday night kick-off, there’s the potential for a three captain Gameweek, should you look to use transfers to switch the skipper. However, as we’ll see, there’s a strong case to ignore the potential of the Sunday and Monday matches to ensure that our teams are setup for the following Gameweek.

There are a number of viable candidates up front for Saturday’s armband. Olivier Giroud entertains Norwich at the Emirates, Liverpool pair Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez roll up to injury-hit Newcastle, Romelu Lukaku welcomes Hull to Goodison, Michu (classified as a forward in the Sky game) plays host to basement-dwellers Sunderland, whilst United’s Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie (if fit) offering alternatives for those who reckon they can breach Southampton’s resilient rearguard. Using Giroud as a starting point, here are three approaches to consider.

Captain Option 1

You have a captain playing in Saturday’s fixtures and use a transfer to switch to one taking part in Sunday’s encounter between Aston Villa and Tottenham; you then use your captain change to select a player from the Monday night clash between Crystal Palace and Fulham. For example:

Our Strategy:
Oliver Giroud →Christian Benteke (If fit)/Gabriel Agbonlahor → Dimitar Berbatov

Using the above strategy you would go into Gameweek 9 with the armband on Dimitat Berbatov who plays on Saturday October 26 away to Southampton.

Captain Option 2

You have a captain playing Saturday and use a captain change to a player playing in Sunday’s matches. Missing out on three captains but keeping hold of a valuable transfer. For example:

Our Strategy:
Olivier Giroud → Christian Benteke (If fit)/Gabriel Agbonlahor

Using this method you would come into Gameweek 9 with a Villa forward as your captain who plays on Saturday October 26 at home to Everton.

Captain Option 3

If Sunday’s clash between Aston Villa and Tottenham and Monday’s game of Crystal Palace and Fulham don’t strike you as potentially profitable you could elect to ‘bank’ you captain change and use it after the fixtures have finished in preparation for Gameweek 9. For Example:

Our Strategy:
Olivier Giroud → Luis Suarez

Using this method you would miss out on two/three captains this Gameweek but would go into the following with Luis Suarez as your captain who faces West Brom at Anfield on Saturday October 26. You’d also have a captain change in hand to allow you to captilise on the four fixtures taking place on the Sunday. Indeed, those who plan to captain Suarez for Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle tomorrow may not need to swap the armband if they don’t fancy Sunday and Monday’s matches, retaining the Uruguayan as captain for the forthcoming Baggies clash.

Flip a coin. Most captain choices boils down to gut feelings, just make your own decision based on what you believe. They`re pretty much equal, you could make a case for both of them. Fwiw, i have both, and i`m captaining Sturridge.

    Assessing the captaincy options

Suarez / Sturridge - both playing well. Up against an average defence at the best of times who are missing key defenders, NEW - LIV always provides goals and surely Suarez / Sturridge will be among them

Rooney - with RvP's likely absence, he is likely to be amongst the goals. I know Southampton are water tight but they're away at Old Trafford, and Man U really need a big performance in this game. I reckon Rooney's got a really excellent shout at gaining the armband

Lukaku - should be on the pitch long enough to do some damage, however Hull have proven a really tough side to crack

Özil - will start (very likely) and against a Norwich side who have been very poor, and at the Emirates, with his and Arsenal's form will probably be odds on for at least an assist or two

Michu - Sunderland will look to be very negative imo, not to mention Swanseas average run of form at home: could well be a low scoring draw so I'd rule him out

Couple niggles, if you don`t mind? The scenario was kind of the same before the United-WBA game, and although Rooney got a good return FPL-wise that game, both him and the team played poor. Not to mention Southampton are a far better side than WBA.

Ozil scores plenty goals both in the Champions league and for Germany, so if he starts, goals are imminent in the BPL as well.

Are you familiar with Gus Poyet`s coaching style? To clarify, i`m not. But from what i have seen of Sunderland this season, they`ve been absolutely terrible most games. They conceded 3 goals away to Palace, whose fhome form is more than average. And Michu is Michu, should have a solid boost after recieving his international debut this break. He`s a solid option, i`d reckon.

Whilst I agree the scenario was the same, you wouldn't think it would happen again? United really need to win this game. Surely you'd expect a good showing

Gus Poyets Brighton were the best defensive side in the Championship last year, and if he's had any impact at all then Sunderland will be at least better defensively. The players they've got in defence arent awful players and you'd assume that Poyet would take a 0-0 away to Swansea to start

I wouldn`t have thought they`d lose to WBA either.. What i mean is that while i would classify it as unlikely, Southampton are, atleast in my opinion, a much better side than WBA. United are struggling, and barely got by Sunderland. They could get something, and it could be a low scoring game. They`re facing a team with 5 clean sheets in the first 7, including away to Liverpool, which are the second highest scoring team so far.

Okay, so Poyet is a defensive oriented coach. That`s fine. And while i surely expect it to be like you say, they`d be more than happy with a scoreless draw away to Swansea, it takes more than a few training sessions to improve your defensive resolve. And i`d like to repeat, Michu is Michu. Sometimes he just pops up, and it`s in the back of the net. AFAIK, Westwood might be injured as well, which never helps.

Oh yeah, didn`t think about it that way. Well, i`d rather not do it like that. I`d splash out the extra 0.5 for someone like Hull or Cardiff keeper, who`s playing week in week out. That way, you can use them when Southampton faces United away etc. Surely this CS run is likely to end at some point.

Yeah i`d strongly consider getting rid of Soldado myself. Striker slots are way too valueable to either have them benched and/or not starting games. Depending on who your other two strikers are, there are plenty of options.

Soldado on his way out but had to patch some other holes first and was still holding hope as differential in my minileague. Hope jettisoned and he's leaving shortly but not this week. Other strikers are Lukaku and Rooney. Rest of midfield is Barkley/Ramsey/Ozil/Michu, all of whom are at home, so that takes me back to question of: Bench Soldado or Bench Siggy

I`d bench Soldado due to Defoe probably getting the starting nod. When you have 4 midfielders playing at home with good fixtures, i can see not taking the hit. Although one of the Arsenal boys might get rested after the international break, so i hope for your sake that you have a defender that can cover if that happens.

Surely, the Ramsey train will stop sooner or later, and getting out while the getting is good, might be the best option considering you still have Ozil. With Santi, Theo and Arteta all returning, rotation is imminent for him. Ozil will always play. Depending on your budget, theres a few decent options in midfield.

Good luck to you too, friend.

Almost certain to score atleast twice? Rofl. They`re averaging just above a goal per game so far this season in all competitions, RvP might be missing, and Southampton have 5 cs in the league. Thats some pretty silly logic.

Like i`ve said repeatedly, United usually do very well against Soton at home. But things are different this year than other years. United are playing worse than before, RvP missing, and Soton are much improved. Its one of those games. I wouldnt be surprised if United won 4-0 or if Soton got away with a 1-1 draw.

I was joking. I agree with you that things are different this year. I would, however, be very much more surprised with a 4-0 United win than with a 1-1 result. United midfield is a shambles and the defense is way too wobbly.

Perhaps. But Southampton arent exactly freescoring, and United at hoem usually keep it tight. Now Rafael should be fit along with Vidic/Rio, they should have small problems with Lambert/Osvaldo. United usually demolish Soton at home, but that was previously. I`m not saying i believe it`s going to be 4-0, but i wouldn`t rule it out either.

Suarez, Sturridge, Lukaku, Rooney, Giroud. These are the options that have everyone stumped. Trying to find reasons why one is more likely to score a goal is the wrong argument. It's a circular debate that can't bring any clarity. I'm sure the bookies can confirm they're all equally likely to get a goal, they are all expected to get a goal. Any compelling reasons we discern why one is more likely to score a goal than the rest can only be confirmation bias.
A better question to separate them is who's more likely to score 4 goals. A completely unrealistic target obviously but a much more relevant question. The difference between what's required to score and what's required to single handedly destroy the opposition is huge and some of these guys are much more capable of it than others this week. I'll let you draw your own conclusions but this is how I choose when there's so little between the options.

Finally someone making sense. Sure, some weeks there are really clear captain choices, i.e if you own a Liverpool player when they`re facing Palace at Anfield. Most weeks though, its a couple of good options, and you just have to back your own instincts. If it goes well, fantastic. If you choose something besides your gut and your original thought did well, you`ll "hate" yourself.

Chico, if the BPS articles from this week are to be believed. You aren't usually buying a defender counting on attacking potential, and with attractive shutout potential coming up, it looks like the chances for BP to go Chico's way is reasonably high.

I'm finding it incredibly difficult to take my Fantasy Football team into this weekend without Lukaku. I feel like... like... like climbing to the top of a mountain and screaming out "I'M FINDING IT INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO TAKE MY FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM INTO THIS WEEKEND WITHOUT LUKAKU".

I just can't seem to justify a -4 for Rooney/Sturridge/Giroud out. Anyone the same?

Its not the strikers fault. All the midfielders do is take long shots. I havent seen a team utilize their striker as little since, well, ever. They NEVER pass him the ball, and his movements have been exellent, i think. Talking about Soldado now, fwiw. Defoe is just a squadplayer. Always have been, always will be.

This was supposed to be the week when holding on to RVP really paid off, and us owners could look forward to a nice set of fixtures with RVP back in the goals.

Hope Moyes is just engaging in a bit of gamesmanship with Pocchetino. Which is certainly not beyond Moyes' character IMO.

Not keen on 3-5-2 with the wealth of points being scored from DF & FWD positions. But not worn a hit as the team is decent enough.

In the coming week(s) I'd be looking to do Nolan > cheapie (Janz, Brady, Whitts) and upgrade Bent to Lukaku

So I've narrowed my captaincy options down to Lampard and Moses. What do you reckon?

Lampard = rested and on penalties. Might sting in some long range free kicks.
Moses = in the hole against a weak Newcastle defence, ready to latch onto Sturridge's scuffed shots and whenever Suarez trips over the ball.

Both are due, so they say...
