With the international break behind us, it’s time to reacquaint ourselves with the Sky Sports game, assessing the recent run of Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point magnets and current market trends. As always, we also look ahead to the forthcoming Gameweek, offering our preferred captain setup.

Gameweek 7 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below is a match-by-match breakdown of the players who won the plaudits from the Sky Sports reporters last time out, earning five additional points for the Man-of-the-Match award.

FixtureMoTM
Man City vs EvertonDavid Silva
Cardiff vs NewcastleLoic Remy
Fulham vs StokePatjim Kasami
Hull vs Aston VillaCurtis Davies
Liverpool vs Crystal PalaceJordan Henderson
Sunderland vs Man UnitedAdnan Januzaj
Norwich vs ChelseaOscar
Southampton vs SwanseaArtur Boruc
West Brom vs ArsenalYoussouf Mulumbu
Tottenham vs West HamRavel Morrison

Looking at the spread of awards, midfielders continue to come out on top with a total of seven MoTMs out of the ten fixtures. The other three were shared equally with goalkeepers, defenders and forwards claiming one apiece. Quite a few budget friendly assets continue to stand out and look like good options in the coming weeks – Patjim Kasami (4.2m), Adnan Januzaj (4.2m) and Ravel Morrison (4.1m) look particularly strong if they can nail down consistent starting roles. Hull City’s Curtis Davies (4.5m) also deserves a mention as he has now achieved MoTM twice in seven starts along with three clean sheets and a goal earning him 34 points so far – a fantastic return for his price tag.

Gameweek 7 Bonus Points

Two Goalkeepers managed five saves or more – Cardiff’s David Marshall and Southampton’s Artur Boruc were the top shot stoppers with eight and seven saves respectively, both have now earned bonus twice so far this season.

In defence, a total of 11 players fetched bonus, eight for tackles and three for passes completed – Aston Villa centre-back Ciaran Clark was the closest to achieving both, just missing out with 53 completed passes, seven short of the required 60.

In midfield, 22 players picked up bonus – 13 for tackling and 11 for passes. England duo Tom Cleverly and Jordan Henderson were the two players to gain bonus for both. Aaron Ramsey (16bps) and Steven N’Zonzi (12bps) are the overall bonus point darlings.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout members can access all the data regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

SoldadoTottenham8.13.71%
HangelandFulham5.43.47%
RoseTottenham4.73.33%
Van PersieMan Utd102.79%

The international break has given Fantasy managers time to reassess their teams and the five most popular transfers out are listed above. Roberto Soldado (3.71%) and Robin Van Persie (2.79%) are the two big hitters making way – both forwards have failed to live up to expectations so far this season claiming only 54 points between them. By comparison, the top scoring player overall Daniel Sturridge has 70 points alone.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
LovrenSouthampton5.28.67%
RamseyArsenal5.86.08 %
LukakuEverton8.64.67%
SturridgeLiverpool9.23.90%
BainesEverton7.73.40%

Southampton’s centre-back Dejan Lovren has been the most sought-after player in the last two weeks with 8.67% of Fantasy managers fetching him in – with a total score of 52 points so far, he is the joint third highest scorer in the game and has represented outstanding value at just 5.2m. Everton’s form and fixtures sees Romelu Lukaku and Leighton Baines drafted in by just under 5% of managers, both look good for potential rewards in the coming weeks, starting with the Goodison clash against Hull this weekend.

Gameweek 8 Proposed Captain Strategy

Looking ahead to the armband options for Gameweek 8, we highlight three options and, with a Monday night kick-off, there’s the potential for a three captain Gameweek, should you look to use transfers to switch the skipper. However, as we’ll see, there’s a strong case to ignore the potential of the Sunday and Monday matches to ensure that our teams are setup for the following Gameweek.

There are a number of viable candidates up front for Saturday’s armband. Olivier Giroud entertains Norwich at the Emirates, Liverpool pair Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez roll up to injury-hit Newcastle, Romelu Lukaku welcomes Hull to Goodison, Michu (classified as a forward in the Sky game) plays host to basement-dwellers Sunderland, whilst United’s Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie (if fit) offering alternatives for those who reckon they can breach Southampton’s resilient rearguard. Using Giroud as a starting point, here are three approaches to consider.

Captain Option 1

You have a captain playing in Saturday’s fixtures and use a transfer to switch to one taking part in Sunday’s encounter between Aston Villa and Tottenham; you then use your captain change to select a player from the Monday night clash between Crystal Palace and Fulham. For example:

Our Strategy:
Oliver Giroud →Christian Benteke (If fit)/Gabriel Agbonlahor → Dimitar Berbatov

Using the above strategy you would go into Gameweek 9 with the armband on Dimitat Berbatov who plays on Saturday October 26 away to Southampton.

Captain Option 2

You have a captain playing Saturday and use a captain change to a player playing in Sunday’s matches. Missing out on three captains but keeping hold of a valuable transfer. For example:

Our Strategy:
Olivier Giroud → Christian Benteke (If fit)/Gabriel Agbonlahor

Using this method you would come into Gameweek 9 with a Villa forward as your captain who plays on Saturday October 26 at home to Everton.

Captain Option 3

If Sunday’s clash between Aston Villa and Tottenham and Monday’s game of Crystal Palace and Fulham don’t strike you as potentially profitable you could elect to ‘bank’ you captain change and use it after the fixtures have finished in preparation for Gameweek 9. For Example:

Our Strategy:
Olivier Giroud → Luis Suarez

Using this method you would miss out on two/three captains this Gameweek but would go into the following with Luis Suarez as your captain who faces West Brom at Anfield on Saturday October 26. You’d also have a captain change in hand to allow you to captilise on the four fixtures taking place on the Sunday. Indeed, those who plan to captain Suarez for Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle tomorrow may not need to swap the armband if they don’t fancy Sunday and Monday’s matches, retaining the Uruguayan as captain for the forthcoming Baggies clash.

And yes, whenever you feel great about your team in weeks like this where the fixtures are a dream, it never seems to go to plan.

Oh well all we can do is send out the troops and hope for the best

I've adjusted by teams goal scoring expectations with regards to the recent disappointment of popular midfield choices. I'd settle for 50 points, when my forward line alone could score that if all goes well. It's an odd game, FPL

just that one defender spot I'm feeling icky about

Shaw (at ManU) or MTurner (at Arsenal) or Debuchy (hosting Liverpool without Colocinni)

I flipped a coin. Shaw had the side, and it landed on it's side. So be it.

      DZ normalcy needed indeed.

Decision time then - any of these options stand out?

    A) Zaba -> Evra. Gives me nailed on United cover for their next 2 home games. Without Kompany I don't fancy City to keep a clean sheet away from home (whu, che up next).

    B) Nolan -> Barkley. Still great value at 5.6m and with decent fixtures to boot. Only downsides are it means I'll have triple EVE with no Lukaku, and i'll be 0.2m short of a Mirallas -> Walcott trade next week (if Wally is confirmed fit).

    C) Nolan -> Januzaj. A cheap but risky punt for some United attacking cover. Seems a decent bet to start this week and had great stats last week. If it all goes wrong then I have a solid bench as cover and it's a fairly easy switch -> Brady/Amalfitano in GW10 (after getting Wally next week).

    D) Save the transfer

    Boruc
    Baines, Terry, Zabaleta
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Ravel
    Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud

    Davis, Nolan, Toure, Ward
    Bank 0.4m

Kompany should be back for tomorrows game, i understand. I like C). Januzaj is totally worth the risk at his price. He should get starts in the coming games, and United have good fixtures, not to mention that Januzaj looks to be their biggest threat, atleast based on the last game.

I brought in Barkley for a hit (due to RVP news & Whitts poor fixtures). So I obviously would lean towards B).

But I already have Lukaku and think he's going to be a great purchase. So not sure I'd close that door for yourself.

Don't get Janz, he's too short term. No way you'll be able to rely on him to start in the coming weeks. Don't get Evra either, Utd not looking solid at the back t all.

      So save I guess

Shutting the door on Lukaku is the main problem with getting Barkley - he just looks by far the best EVE player to have right now.

I kind of think I can afford to take a risk with Januzaj given I have no injuries or non-starters. He's likely to start this w/e and he'll know he needs one more stella performance to perhaps get a run in the team. A switch to Brady/Amalfitano in GW10 (when their fixtures get good) isn't a bad fall out plan either.

I`d probably do Moses->Januzaj. Cheaper, good fixtures, should be nailed on for atleast the next few games, depending. Moses` spot is in severe trouble now with Glen Johnson returning. If they keep the 3-4-1-2 formation, Moses could very well lose his starting place with Henderson moving centrally.

I did Moses to Amalfitano this week.

I'd consider MTurner to Vlaar if you have a spare FT with nothing else to do.

Giroud to a Belgian maybe in the next few weeks.

Rooney droppers may have seller's remorse soon (and I don't own, just think it so).

    any thoughts about gary cahill?

any reason he won't start? is it just that mou is now wanting the luiz/terry combo in the middle?

Blimey, shocker start! I'm sure you'll come back though given your impressive track record.

Would you Barkley or Januzaj this week? (Already have Baines & Mirallas, but no United cover).

He`ll start, definitely. Moyes said pre Sunderland game that he had been too good in training to not start, and when you score twice, well you start again.

Quite fast moving for the DZ guys. Wonder if I can throw in my team for a comment or two. Everything set up right? No hits needed?

    Migs (4.0)
    Terry Rio Dawson
    Michu Lamps Barkley Ramsey
    RVP Studge(vc) Lukaku(c)

    Bench: Whitts Shaw Chester
    (0.5 ITB & 0FT)

8 players at home, and even the away players have decent fixtures (Spurs & Pool). It will all end in disappointment I'm sure 😕

I think he's worth it yeh just for security of starts. Evra has basically no competition for his spot. Whereas Right Back is a spot where Moyes has been giving time to the likes of Smalls and Jones as he seems to favour Vida & Rio but wants to keep the former two's minutes ticking over

          (H) is the best argument for Giroud.

          Think about it like this.....

Which (Giroud or Suarez) is more likely to score a goal our of nothing?
Which (Giroud or Suarez)is more likely to miss a sitter?
Which (Giroud or Suarez) is more likely get an assist?

        Haha, thanks!

Zab isn't looking a great pick right now, and he may well go next week I think.

I agree to an extent with Ramsey - rotation inevitable once all midfielders are back, but I got him at 5.6m so not a bad 4/5th mid at that price.

Giroud - definitely not a sell before NOR, cry, and I almost think he should be in everyone's team until we buy a new striker. Nailed on, in form and with arguably the best supply line in the league.

2 HAS to be silva i would think. better differential, slightly cheaper, and, lest we forget, silva is far and away the more productive FPL midfielder over time.

1 i think (as i just brought in GJ) would be him. setting aside form (which doesn't help us here), liverpool's CS potential over next 10 is vastly better than spurs'.

i'm currently going with this lineup:

    vorm (boruc)
baines / gjohnson / coleman (clyne / baker)
oscar / ozil / moses / barkley (ramsey)
    giroud(c) / rooney / sturridge

key issue being whether to play moses or ramsey. it seems folly to choose the away rather than home player, especially when up until last GW the home player was the one on form. HOWEVER, with ozil and cazorla fit and wenger hinting at changes (maybe arteta/wilshere in double pivot with ozil in CAM and cazorla on left, leaving ramsey either on the wing (where he didn't look at the races) or on the bench), as well as moses in hole against a (let's face it) walkabout newcastle defense, i'm thinking moses.

can anyone make a compelling argument otherwise?
