These are hazardous times. Shopping in midfield is a thankless task, with little value and consistency on offer, aside from a pair of dominant forces who threaten to break the season, along with the hearts and minds of those too stubborn to jump on board their seemingly relentless bandwagons.

In this latest episode of the podcast, I lay the blame for my inept season squarely at the feet of my failing midfield and my reluctance to give Aaron Ramsey the time of day. Oh, how I crave those predictable days of the ever-reliable “Power Fiveâ€.

Granville does his best to ensure that my moans fall on sympathetic ears, although his sniggering gives him away on more than one occasion. In between giggles, my co-host joins me to dissect the week’s transfer activity, preview the weekend’s fixtures and mastermind another mediocre Gameweek for the ScoutCast lineup.

Tread where others fear to tread via this link or laugh in the face of danger via the handy player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why do I feel very unconvinced by this midfield for this week?

    Yaya Silva Ramsey Oscar

Maybe it's because Yaya's FK goals are bound to diminish, and Oscar is lacking in consistency? Silva and Ramsey are quality though. Most players would be happy with that midfield, chin up 🙂

Ramsey is the real deal. No doubt. "But his returns are bound to reduce" - Yes, they will at some point, but even reduced, his points are worth the outlay. Presently he is firing on all cylinders, just get him. In the unlikely case he does drop severely in form, you can just remove him.

Also, Gerrard to get hattie against Fulham and in the Merseyside derby 😀

You lot have conceded 13 goals though in the league. And you just can't see Arsenal blanking, can you?

Everything's coming from the midfield. And I do have Suarez and Aguero both. Its between Ramsey, Silva (if fit) and Coutinho. I don't think I'm ever finding the answer to this one.

Quite sensible, but as a chaser I just feel like getting him now is reducing my fightback to a 10 v 10 match-up against the millions above me. Can't shake the feeling that the discovery of a better alternative is the way to rise more than getting Ramsey.

against Chelsea it was RVP up top and rooney dropped deep a lot. he was back near his own corner flag making slide tackles at one point and all the pundits were using that as the basis for talking about his commitment to united still

he has been playing alongside rvp though? Not behind, that was one the reasons he wanted out of the club with fergie as he kept playing him as a secondary striker

that is a very reductionist way of looking at it. the team-sheet may have rooney just behind RVP but he always ends up filling gaps in midfield.

midfield. that is deep for a striker!

this example typifies most big games he plays for united :

'But look at the heat-maps and the uniqueness of Rooney's play is revealed. He dropped so deep at times that his average position was in a line with Nani and Ryan Giggs'

                        http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/jonathan_wilson/03/17/cl.tactical.review/

if he ends being in line with the midfielders from tracking back so much then can you say is a striker if he isn't in those positions? I accept moyes has said he wants rooney up top with RVP as rooney doesn't like to be second-fiddle but if carrick/cleverly are out I think moyes may talk to wayne and ask him to help out as united are short there.

But you've held out so well! Do you want to bring in a flagged player? Also, Lukaku is a great option this week but when Everton's fixtures toughen up you may wish you had kept Rooney.
