Winston Churchill once said that “an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” While itโ€™s not in my nature to quote jingoistic rhetoric or, indeed, eagerly put myself forward as an “optimist” in everyday life, my Fantasy season has found me clinging to such pearls of wisdom.

This morning, faced with two stricken high value midfielders, I recognise the opportunity to turn things around. Having displayed stubborn stupidity all season, resisting points hits at all turns, suddenly it feels like a weight has been lifted. The injuries to Michu and David Silva have handed me the freedom to gamble points and grab the chance to make changes that can pay me back in the short-term, whilst strengthening my squad for the long game.

Up until now, Iโ€™ve been loathed to throw points away. Iโ€™ve never really been handed a scenario that didnโ€™t come with a healthy slice of risk โ€“ the chance that a points hit would not only fail to break even but would actually cost me points by seeing me bench a more profitable asset.

This morning the situation seems slightly different. I can ill afford to hold either David Silva or Michu over the international break and watch their value plummet further. Equally, the prospect of relying on points from Stephane Sessegnon at Chelsea or Marko Arnautovic at Swansea seems a forlorn hope.

I feel I have to trade my injured players and try to find replacements that offer the potential of earning me at least four points back. While I could stop at that, when Iโ€™m spending four, I always consider whether my chances of recouping losses and, crucially, making a difference in the long-term, can be boosted by actually spending more points. It takes a combination of fixtures and a mix of players that not only provide opportunity for the weekend in question, but also fit my plans for the next month and beyond. In this way, even if my points hit is not fully recouped, I can clutch at straws and convince myself that, beyond the immediate Gameweek, the moves will eventually see profit and help form my โ€œmaster planโ€.

This is the thought process I go through when I consider points hits. I fight a battle with myself โ€“ posing questions and seeking answers that can offer assurance or at least a get-out clause, should disaster strike and the decision fall flat in the short-term.

Hovering over the transfer button, Iโ€™m conscious that my proposed moves are knee jerks created by the malaise of my season and that, given the opportunity to spend points, Iโ€™m doing so with reckless abandon. Somewhere the logic Iโ€™m using to convince myself is deeply flawed but, for some reason, I donโ€™t seem to care all that much.

For me, I need to start playing Fantasy football again, not confining my decision making by rules and guidelines that Iโ€™ve set myself to this point. As Churchill said, the โ€œproblemsโ€ have offered me โ€œopportunityโ€ and while I could easily be left red-faced and parrying more blows from Granville in the next ScoutCast, Iโ€™m going to grasp the situation and trust my instincts. Fantasy football has been playing me to this point โ€“ suddenly, I feel I’ve been given the chance to turn the tables.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My main rivals are captaining Suarez, RvP and Kun this weekend.

Should I captain Lukaku, Suarez or Benteke? Obviously the scout poll suggests Suarez so should I stop the rot by selecting the same as a rival or risk a differential? Is Lukaku poised to thrash Crystal Palace?

Captain the player you think will score most, far too early to allow their teams to affect your decisions.

From this point on, I may not include team news from the press lineups in the preamble every week, if at all. Basically, if I’m to keep the preamble going, it may have to be written prior to Saturday mornings to work around family stuff. This isn’t possible if it relies on my sifting through the morning papers every Saturday. Much as I love that, it’s not always practical with events going on at home. I hope you understand.

I’ve posted some snippets from the papers in this comment to help folk out.

If anyone fancies taking on this “what the papers say” element of the pre-amble for a new article, then by all means drop me a line at mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Anyway, here’s a couple of points of interest…

Coutinho is not a starter in all the papers this morning – The Daily Mail, the Telegraph and The Times omit him, keeping faith with the 3-5-2 and retaining Henderson. The Sun, The Independent and The Guardian all have him in their predicted lineup, however. Glen Johnson returns at right-back in all the lineups, but Enrique is only given a chance by the Mail and the Independent.

Eden Hazard is by no means certain of his start for Chelsea according to the press boys. The Telegraph and the Guardian both leave him out of their XI, although the other four papers all hand him a start with Willian and Mata missing out – the Times retain Willian and choose to omit Schurrle.

hehe...its a shame to drop the press element from it but I'm guessing the preamble is enjoyed for insight into my struggles (particularly this season). I'm hopeful I can keep that going (the writing, not the struggles).

      Mignolet
      Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Enrique

    Nice preamble as ever Mark.

As you say, once taking hits, why not a few more? I suppose it's a percentage game in the end.
How many hits will give you the best team and the optimum chance of one or more of them returning a big score to at least cover what you've committed to.
On this note it may be quite reasonable to suppose a 12pt hit is not unreasonable if you get four new players each of whom may return your full risk. Any more than that as I see it and the chances of needing more than one big return to cover your gamble are likely to tip the balance.

'Swot I think anyway. Shoot it down in flames if you wish.

    Repost! Cmon guys,

I'm on wildcard on unsure whether my team needs still changes

    Begovic
    Terry, Rat, G.Johnson
    Ramsey, Morrison, Coutinho, Hazard
    Benteke, Aguero, Suarez (C)

    subs: Harper, Januzaj, Mertesacker, Rosenior

    Too much invested in defence?
Downgrade Johnson and upgrade somewhere? Please give comments! thanks
