We roll out the first of our weekly three-part series of articles on player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks. Three of the current top four occupy our thoughts, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal primed for favourable fixtures, though a tough run for Tottenham and Everton may pose problems for the top two defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game:

Goalkeepers

Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet remains at the top of the keeper rankings this week. The Reds have three strong home games (NOR, WHM, CAR) and a trip to Hull in the next six and while visits to Everton and Spurs won’t be straightforward, both sides’ recent lack of goals bodes well as the Belgian looks to build on the back of last week’s clean sheet against Fulham. With Brendan Rodgers moving from 3-4-1-2 to 4-4-2, the uncertainty surrounding many of the Liverpool defence strengthens Mignolet’s case.

Petr Cech is another non-mover. Chelsea have struggled to produce defensive returns and have conceded in each of their last six but the fixtures continue to fall in their favour –trips to West Ham, Sunderland and Stoke, allied with home games against Southampton and Palace, could see the clean sheets return for Jose Mourinho’s side. With attacking options amongst the Blues back-four, though, Cech’s appeal is somewhat diminished.

A run of three homes games in four (SOU, car, HUL, EVE) brings Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny into consideration in this week’s refresh. The Pole has conceded just once in the last three matches and has racked up more points than any Gunners defender.

Tim Krul’s heroics in the previous Gameweek earned the Newcastle keeper a second successive clean sheet. Having kept out Chelsea and Spurs, the Dutchman will fancy his chances in back-to-back home games against Norwich and West Brom – games against Southampton and Palace in the next six atone for testing trips to Swansea and United.

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic has four home games in the next six to bolster his appeal. Sunderland, Cardiff and Villa all pay visit to the Britannia and with a trip to Hull also factored in, the Potters will be confident of improving upon a run of one clean sheet in the last seven – with attack-minded options elsewhere at the back for Mark Hughes’ side, though, he may well be overlooked.

Villa’s Brad Guzan continues to impress, with four clean sheets in seven. The US stopper has been ruled out of international duties this week but is expected to be fit for games against West Brom, Sunderland, Southampton and Fulham in the upcoming four Gameweeks – Guzan, at 5.0, is costlier than his defensive colleagues but has backed this up by racking up 12 points more than any Villa backline option.

Jussi Jaaskelainen and Artur Boruc both tumble down the rankings as a result of some tricky schedules. The Hammers face Chelsea. Liverpool and United in the next six and with real doubts over Winston Reid and potentially James Collins, Jaaskelainen may struggle to replicate the form which has already brought six clean sheets his way. Boruc’s owners also have reason for concern; with Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Spurs all on their agenda over the next six, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are set for a testing time.

Michel Vorm returns to the top 10 after serving a one-match ban last time around. The Dutchman has conceded once in his last three and his owners will be hoping he can instill a little more resilience at the back for Swansea, after they shipped three to Stoke in his absence – trips to Fulham and Norwich in the next five are supplemented by home games against Newcastle and Hull.

West Brom also have four fixtures in front of their own fans over the next six. This helps Boaz Myhill climb in our estimations but, having withdrawn from international duties with Achilles and thumb problems, and with Ben Foster closing in on a comeback from a foot injury, his acquisition doesn’t come without a degree of risk attached.

Defenders

Glen Johnson moves to the top of the defender standings ahead of Liverpool’s kind schedule. With doubts over the centre-half and left-back positions, Johnson looks the most secure option at the back under Brendan Rodgers, with his raids down the right offering the chance of attacking potential.

John Terry continues to get the nod over Branislav Ivanovic as our Chelsea defender of choice. With Ashley Cole recently dropped to the bench and uncertainty surrounding the remaining central defensive spot, it’s a straight fight between Terry and Ivanovic for our attentions – the Blues skipper has offered a far superior goal threat to the Serbian in recent matches and looks the man most likely to produce for Jose Mourinho’s defence.

With Mathieu Debuchy suspended and uncertainty surrounding the central half positions, Davide Santon is called upon for Newcastle’s kind run of fixtures. Debuchy’s suspension may allow Fabricio Coloccini a return to the middle, though, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa shifted to right-back next weekend –the Argentine would climb in our estimations if he earns a return to the XI for the first time since Gameweek 7; he has collected maximum bonus on the two occasions he has returned a clean sheet and is now down to 4.9.

Arsenal centre-half Per Mertesacker gets the nod for the upcoming four fixtures. Sidelined by flu against United, his presence at the back was sorely missed as his side conceded for the first time in three matches – the German has picked up seven bonus points, the same number as his fellow defenders combined. Ahead of three home games in four, his threat in the box has already served up a goal and double-figure haul at the Emirates thus far.

United’s Jonny Evans makes his way up the new rankings. With Phil Jones likely to deputise for the injured Michael Carrick in central midfield, Evans’ security of starts looks strong – he has been named in the XI in five of the last six and has a trip to Cardiff, in addition to home games against Everton and Newcastle in the next four. At just 5.0, he’s comfortably cheaper than any of David Moyes’ backline regulars.

We turn to Erik Pieters as our Stoke defender of choice for four Britannia clashes in the upcoming six Gameweeks. The left-back has two assists in the last three and at 5.0, isn’t too unkind on the budget – given that the Potters have just one clean sheet in seven, Huth and Ryan Shawcross have struggled to justify their value.

Coming in at just 4.5, Razvan Rat is the cheapest of Sam Allardyce’s options but, if James Collins is ruled out with the injury that caused him to miss Wales’ match with Finland on Saturday, the Hammers boss may turn to Dan Potts (3.9) at centre-half; with the schedule toughening up, though, many may choose to overlook the Hammers’ under-strength backline.

With two goals and an assist to his name already this season, Gareth McAuley’s attacking potential is obvious. The Baggies centre-half has dropped from 5.5 to 5.4 and with 2% ownership, looks a real differential option ahead of schedule which sees him host Villa, Norwich and Hull in the next six, in addition to a trip to Cardiff. Elsewhere in the midlands, Villa’s Ron Vlaar comes in at just 4.4. The Dutchman has picked up bonus points every time his side have registered a clean sheet and is the only defender to play every minute under Paul Lambert, though Nathan Baker, at 3.9, has now started five of the last six and seems to have established himself as a regular.

Swansea skipper Ashley Williams has picked up maximum bonus on two of the three occasions he has produced a clean sheet and at 4.8, is the cheapest of Michael Laudrup’s defensive regulars. Jan Vertonghen and Leighton Baines tumble due to their upcoming fixtures. Spurs have City and United up next, while Everton have Liverpool, United and Arsenal in the next four – the top two defenders in the FPL standings may have to rely in attacking output over the short-term period, at least.

At just 4.2 Martin Olsson has started each of the last six for Norwich and has home games against Palace and Swansea, supplemented with a trip to Sunderland in the next six. Curtis Davies has home games against Palace and Stoke in the next five to bolster his chances of further returns – the Tigers have shipped a single goal in five at the KC, though the downside here is that Davies is just a caution away from a one-match ban. With Liverpool, Arsenal and Swansea also on Hull’s agenda, his owners may look to bench him more than not.

Martin Demichelis is the only City defender to start each of the last two now after Matija Nastasic missed out away to Sunderland due to injury. With a single clean sheet in seven, though, City’s chances of defensive returns have taken a real dent – Costel Pantilimon offers a cheaper option between the sticks for those who reckon an upturn in resilience is around the corner.

      Clyne, Ward, Collins

      Thinking Ward, Ravel and Brady.

Ravel Brady for sure. Really hard to pick any from the 3 defenders, but the more I think about it the more Ward has to be the better alternative. Clyne and Collins have tougher fixtures, West Ham are lacking their #1 stopper and Hull aren't setting the world on fire in front of the goal.

        Ward > Collins > Clyne I reckon.

Am still playing around with my WC team. Have gone mental on attack with strong MF though defence is a bit risky.

      Haper, Boruc
      Ridgewell, Jag, Clyne, Clyne, Rat
      Hazard, Ramsey, Lallana, Ravel, Sess
      Suarez, Rooney, Aguero

      Any opinions would be appreciated!

        Clyne is a risk 😉

How about a downgrade to Snoddy to upgrade the defence a tad.

a rotation risk? Am not convinced on Snoddy yet but it could be a good call. The other option is Brady who got a ton of points when fit but zero points recently! Could then get Mert and possibly Evans.

Morgan's been desperately close to assisting in the last two games I think. Long's header hit the post from his cross against Chelsea, also remember something similar against Palace. Also don't forget why you bought the guy, or at least I did - his stunning goal against United. The guy's got the talent.

The other thing is that Amalfitano is significantly cheaper and still is a budget mid you can easily afford to bench. I think he's got the points in him.

Got the talent but the other factor is it will be one less transfer to make to get my Xmas squad. Sess has more chance of playing every game than Morgan.

Yeah not surprised Sess comes out stronger on the stats, Morgan doesn't have much goal threat so he can't really compete there. Even then Sess isn't really getting brilliant threat stats - look at his minutes per attempt. I did like the look of Amalfitano's crossing when I got him and he's doing pretty healthily there. In terms of FPL points what happened is Sess's shot squirmed through Cech's hands, and Amalfitano's crosses were inches away from being converted. It's tight in real life.

Clearly given Sess is 6.6 and Amalfitano is 5.2 I'd be expecting Sess to outscore Amalfitano, but in terms of value and utility in the team (can you bench Sess?) I don't think it's clear Sess is a must-have.

Thoughts on Walker, Paulinho, Whittingham & Barkley > Baker, Bacuna, Cabaye & Walcott for -8 next week... Funds are spot on as it stays. Would give me the following for GW13:

      Mignolet
      Baker - Coleman - Terry
      Cabaye - Haz - Sess - Walcott
      Benteke - Rooney - Suarez

      Boruc - Bacuna - Clyne - Chester
      Bank = 0

Triple Villa is a little scary but looks decent on paper.
      Thoughts?

@ John Terry's Dog - sorry just catching up with the posts on the last article 🙂

Personally I wouldn't suggest a dramatic restructure of your team, I'd just bear in mind the possible rotation factors when making transfers from now until January. As much as anything else, the reason some players are 'big hitters' is the fact they're nailed on.

For example, Silva and Aguero played in every game over the same period last year. Silva was subbed off early twice and missed out on 52 minutes, Aguero was subbed on once and off four times and missed out on 121 minutes.

Compare that to Nasri and Tevez say who were arguably the less big hitting alternatives to those two and they missed a whopping 582 minutes and 473 minutes respectively.

Highlights the need to have the players who are first choice in their positions if at all possible.

Safe? No. Worth the risk? Probably.

Hard to know what Pellegrini will do and instead of Tevez/Balotelli as alternatives there is Negredo/Jovetic. That said, he's only missed one game this season through injury and has been picked whenever available.

It's my biggest headache at the moment when looking at December as if you take that game out Kun fixtures are pretty poor from 16 to 24 with better alternatives in my head but that one game could kill any planning if I go in without him and he starts with the armband on from everyone else.

As an Aguero-less fool I'm hoping he's about to embark on a run of blanks and benching but I've a nasty feeling that's just not true.

If I were you I'd keep him short term and monitor his form. There aren't many alternatives who are definitely nailed on and with good fixtures in that period - Benteke perhaps being the exception.

I'm planning on owning him within the next week or two as a nice secure captaincy option for the Christmas schedule. Probably bring him in for the Sunderland game.

Yeah, that's something to consider. Keep in mind at the moment his "natural" replacement in Jovetic is injured, should boost his chances of playing more IMO. Dzeko + Negredo partnership isn't optimal. His form and the fact they are far from comfortable in PL, while they are qualified in CL, also can't hurt.

I have no idea when he's back. Why not rest him versus Bayern? In all probability the group will be settled by the time they meet with Bayern all but guaranteed top spot in the group.

Pilzen is a good chance for a rest, Capital One cup good chance for rest. Plenty of opportunities coming along.

Pilzen is next week so doesn't really have an influence a month later.

I just can't see City going to Bayern with a second string when there is a remote chance of finishing top

I'd say it does, fatigue building up is a big influence in what players get a rest or not.

City have enormous depth. Sure it's hard to see them going to Bayern with a second string but it's also hard to see how that game is more important than any PL game.

^this is whats crushing me, City's fixtures aren't great and their away form is terrible but Kun could go nuts in a few of the matches. Forward line is Remy, Rooney, Suarez with 4.6 in the bank so could afford it but my gut says no.

        Mignolet - Lewis
        Terry - Chico - Coleman - Dawson - Clyne
        Ozil - Yaya - Ramsey - Barkley - Brady
        Suarez - Giroud - Lukaku

do people still think soldado is muck or that he isnt gettting the neccessay service?

if soldado imagined the type of player that might provide him with the least goal scoring chances in a game , that player would be pretty close to andros townsend. he can seem to do no wrong with AVB yet i thought he was one of the poorest players against the toons.

I think when AVB gets to the stage where he plays Eriksen, Lamela and perhaps even Holtby in the same team - he'll get some great service.

Though I would do some analysis of the Explosion Imminent table in the members area. There are 31 players and 7 categories of "explosion":
        Chances Created
        Minutes per Chance
        Minutes Per Chance Created
        Shots
        Shots inside the box
        Touches final third
        Touches Penalty area

You can play around by sorting each column, but there's no overall ranking. So for each factor put in rank order and then gave the BEST a score of 1 and the worst a score of 31 (where equal rank the score given was the same).

        e.g. Most Shots = 1
Hence if a player comes top in all categories the best score would be 7.

That produces a table with that has the following Top 6:
Benteke 39 - he came top in 3 categories.
        Townsend 40 - came 2nd or 1st in 4 categories.
        Downing 48
        Sessegnon 59
        Nolan 59
        Henderson 60
        ...score then jumps to 73

I won't give too much more detail because it's not fair on the paid members to give this info for free to the non-members.

He's started 2 of 8 games he's been fit for and not been fantasy relevant for a few years now. It's like buying a cheaper and worse version of Torres.

Chelsea has good fixtures coming..don't ditch oscar...out of these keep a track on the performance of both Ramsey (I feel his time is up) and Lallana..Lallana to Sess looks a good option if he doesn't perform..rest your mid field is well settled

Would think about ditching Clyne... wouldn't want to be doubling up on Sthmptn with their fixtures

+1. No idea what he originally said either and how they translated it. I'm hoping Chelsea will look a different team after a good rest over the break for many of the players... need to pick up that away form sooner rather than later and Jose knows this.

He scored a lucky goal against Chelsea, then someone on here said, oh, he may get a good shout...

                      Then we all followed.

Lack of even mediocre options in the midfield gets people swarming quickly. His stats are good and he's got some pedigree with decent fixtures to come... I'm on WC and currently got him, but wouldn't be desperate to get him in.

I think Benteke's situation is a classic case of Due vs Form. Obviously he's gone lots of shots without a goal and should be Due. That said, he's also displayed classic symptoms of Not Shooting Very Well, aka Form. He's had a penalty saved against Everton, and just missed two great headed chances for Belgium against Colombia. If you believe players' performance does go up and down (ie. they are human), I think it is worth bearing in mind he can't appear to shoot for toffee right now.

I've been considering this as this is probably the missing link (aha) that scuppered my earlier Mirallas, Coutinho and Walcott punts - they had position and fixture but simply couldn't shoot. And that's something I only realized when I got a chance to watch them.

Don't get me started on Mirallas... I kept him until this GW.

I see your point though, watching the games is definitely a leg-up compared to just glancing over the stats.

Yeah, ideally do both, all in all just need to get as much information as you can. I try to watch highlights (can be easily found on footytube) of players I'm considering, if I can't manage to see them live.

The way I see it there's a huge pool of potential transfers you could make and it's your job to set the bar high enough to cut out the time wasters.

Yeah, I watch as much of the games live as possible but I should probably get better at catching the highlights if I want to up my game.

i would definitely not mind waiting until i actually see him score, before bringing him in. confidence is big with strikers

Yeah as GW/Roscola (why can't I ever remember which one) confirmed with their look at the stats months ago, form does exist.

I sold Giroud about a month ago based on how he was looking as opposed to any stats reason.

That's what's made me wait - I had my eyes on him 2 or 3 weeks ago but the goals simply haven't come. I'm hoping he knocks one in this weekend so I can bring him in for the Sunderland game having convinced myself he's "on form", regardless of whether the other evidence really supports it 🙂

You know it's how it works - once he gets one the rest will come. It's like what Wenger said yonks ago about Ramsey, "once he starts scoring he won't stop". I think the stream of goals he's had would be extremely unlikely to occur purely from luck.

That's what I mean by form, the idea that performance doesn't have to be fixed with time.

Yeah, that was tongue in cheek - the real trick is identifying genuine form early enough to take advantage and be able to spot when it's come to an end. I'm simply terrible at that.
