The injuries pile up for Southampton ahead of a home game with City. United and Swansea have selection problems up front for the visit of Newcastle and Hull respectively, Ron Vlaar is a concern as Villa roll up to Fulham, while Spurs sweat on Jan Vertonghen’s ankle problem for the trip to Sunderland:

Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out Nathaniel Clyne and Victor Wanyama of Southampton’s clash with City at St Mary’s – the latter has a hairline fracture of the leg and his manager is uncertain as to when he will return. The Saints boss has also revealed Jose Fonte is to be assessed after only being fit enough for a sub role in midweek, while Morgan Schneiderlin, Danny Fox and Guly Do Prado remain on the sidelines along with injured keepers Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis.

Fantasy managers were dealt a blow in midweek when Wayne Rooney picked up a fifth booking of the campaign, which sees him miss the visit of Newcastle this Saturday. David Moyes has also conceded he doesn’t yet know when Robin Van Persie will recover from the groin injury that has sidelined him for weeks, though has insisted the injury is “nothing desperately serious”.

Michael Laudrup has issues up front ahead of Monday’s visit of Hull. Alvaro Vazquez was forced off early in the first-half against Newcastle and his manager admitted post-match that the injury wasn’t bad and a return looks imminent. The Swans boss exercised caution when discussing Michu and Wilfried Bony’s progress from injury – the Spaniard has been training on his own and Laudrup confessed that he “could be back” for Monday but definitely won’t be match fit, going on to say it is too soon to decide whether either will be available for selection.

Ron Vlaar owners are facing a nervous wait to see whether he’ll be available to face Fulham. The Villa skipper was forced off in midweek against Southampton with a calf injury – his potential absence could force Paul Lambert to revert back to a four-man defence, having fielded a 3-5-2 at St Mary’s.

Andre Villas-Boas is eagerly awaiting scan results on the ankle problem picked up by Jan Vertonghen at Fulham on Wednesday. The Belgian rolled over on his ankle in midweek and his manager conceded the joint was “quite swollen” immediately after the 2-1 triumph. Kyle Naughton is on standby to deputise, though the Spurs boss has also revealed Danny Rose has now started training and may be back in a week or so. Villas-Boas has concerns over Mousa Dembele, who missed the trip to Fulham with a hip problem. The Belgian’s absence afforded Paulinho another stint in “the hole” during midweek, though Lewis Holtby may get the chance behind a lone striker after grabbing the midweek winner.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Friday’s press conferences unfold and Fantasy managers prepare for the third Gameweek in the past seven days.

I am seriously considering a Palace defender. Even with 5.9m to spend - do i need to see the Doc?

Hell, I'm considering two of them. Palace will be so much tighter under Pullis. I'm transferring my cheap defender affections from Southampton to Palace. Do it.

That's exactly it; a couple of solid, currently underpriced 4 million defenders in an improving defence who play each week -- it frees up so much money which will pay back elsewhere. (Coleman for me too next week.)

No... I'm going for Gabbidon and I got 6.7M to spend. I've got 3 big defenders already, don't want to spend more. You don't have to use all the money you have in the bank on every single transfer.

Clyne being out means I need to take a 4 point hit just to field 11. Seems an ideal time to sort Faye out though.

    Options are:-

    A) Gabbidon
    B) Clark (Villa)
    C) Flanagan
    D) Burner

(No other defenders from those teams)

Is it crazy to consider bringing in Bannan for Brady and Gabbidon for Clyne?

My thinking is that Bannan rotates brilliantly with Morrison and the Palace defensive have strong home fixtures which rotate well with my other lower end defenders
I do like having a cheeky double up on defenders too!

Are they that good though? 22 goals in 14 games isn't amazing, and Arsenal have only conceded 10.

Everton were dominated by Spurs, so I would think Arsenal were strong favourites at home.

They're playing a lot of sides equally as poor between now and the Jan WC. Don't see that they've really got the option to rotate him in their position and with Pilkington and Snodgrass out.

Not Oviedo, whilst he's scored 2 I don't see this form continuing, and once Baines returns that him done. Plus he doesn't get any defender points for a clean sheet.

Redmond could be a good shout, I'm just not sure about the teams form.

    What to do here?
2 free transfers, 0.5 million in the bank

    Mignolet, Boruc,
    Jagielka, Mertasacker, Shaw, Collins, Chester,
    Hazard, Coutinho, Ramsey, Morrison, Januzaj,

Thinking Giroud to Lukaku and Januzaj to Bannan or more likely Whitingham. Thoughts?

    Speroni (De Gea)
GJ, Terry, Evra, J Ward, (Jagielka)
    Ramsey, Gerard, Bannan (WP, Oviedo)
    Aguero, Suarez, Giroud

Wildcard played this week.... how can this team be improved? I have gone for a strong defense over Midfield as it seems really hit and miss.

Currently ranked in top 100k but falling behind main rival in mini league.

The Giroud to Lukaku transfer is going to give. M a headache.
Lukaku's stock is rising, good form with great fixtures, but up against Arsenal. I have Mertasacker, so is it a no win situation bringing in Lukaku?

Contrasting lay, I have Giroud and Ramsey up against Jagielka. Again a headache.

    Make the transfer?

you shouldn't worry about putting defender against striker in your team. it's bound to happen every now and then, and it means one of them is likely to do well.

    http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/kagawa-keen-to-adapt-29815549.html

I have to say I do admire Kagawa in a lot of senses. Not being played in his proper position but still wanting to improve significantly on the left wing and even being keen to be able to play in more positions for the club. Just strikes me as a lad who really wants to be playing for the team.

And of course he could have stayed in his safe bubble in the Bundesliga where he knew he'd remain one of the top players there but he took the risk. Will be sad to see him leave if he does go, unless back to Dortmund, then I'll be delighted 😀

Shame, but we need somebody like Gundogan more than we need somebody like Kagawa, in terms of the type of player they are positionally.

I agree certainly. To be honest I am nearly positive that Kagawa was brought in to replace Rooney, I think Fergie was anticipating him leaving.

But yes, United are in dire need of more defensive and central midfield solidity.
