The injuries pile up for Southampton ahead of a home game with City. United and Swansea have selection problems up front for the visit of Newcastle and Hull respectively, Ron Vlaar is a concern as Villa roll up to Fulham, while Spurs sweat on Jan Vertonghen’s ankle problem for the trip to Sunderland:

Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out Nathaniel Clyne and Victor Wanyama of Southampton’s clash with City at St Mary’s – the latter has a hairline fracture of the leg and his manager is uncertain as to when he will return. The Saints boss has also revealed Jose Fonte is to be assessed after only being fit enough for a sub role in midweek, while Morgan Schneiderlin, Danny Fox and Guly Do Prado remain on the sidelines along with injured keepers Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis.

Fantasy managers were dealt a blow in midweek when Wayne Rooney picked up a fifth booking of the campaign, which sees him miss the visit of Newcastle this Saturday. David Moyes has also conceded he doesn’t yet know when Robin Van Persie will recover from the groin injury that has sidelined him for weeks, though has insisted the injury is “nothing desperately serious”.

Michael Laudrup has issues up front ahead of Monday’s visit of Hull. Alvaro Vazquez was forced off early in the first-half against Newcastle and his manager admitted post-match that the injury wasn’t bad and a return looks imminent. The Swans boss exercised caution when discussing Michu and Wilfried Bony’s progress from injury – the Spaniard has been training on his own and Laudrup confessed that he “could be back” for Monday but definitely won’t be match fit, going on to say it is too soon to decide whether either will be available for selection.

Ron Vlaar owners are facing a nervous wait to see whether he’ll be available to face Fulham. The Villa skipper was forced off in midweek against Southampton with a calf injury – his potential absence could force Paul Lambert to revert back to a four-man defence, having fielded a 3-5-2 at St Mary’s.

Andre Villas-Boas is eagerly awaiting scan results on the ankle problem picked up by Jan Vertonghen at Fulham on Wednesday. The Belgian rolled over on his ankle in midweek and his manager conceded the joint was “quite swollen” immediately after the 2-1 triumph. Kyle Naughton is on standby to deputise, though the Spurs boss has also revealed Danny Rose has now started training and may be back in a week or so. Villas-Boas has concerns over Mousa Dembele, who missed the trip to Fulham with a hip problem. The Belgian’s absence afforded Paulinho another stint in “the hole” during midweek, though Lewis Holtby may get the chance behind a lone striker after grabbing the midweek winner.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Friday’s press conferences unfold and Fantasy managers prepare for the third Gameweek in the past seven days.

    So, in an ideal world, we'd make this gameweek a 7-a-side affair... not going to hang on to my position in the top 50k with this crock of sh*te

    Migs (Marshall)
    Coleman, Kosc, Ward, Evans (Murner)
    Ramsey, Hazard, Oscar, Sess, (Ravel)
    Suarez, Remy (Rooney)
    1FT, 0.000M in bank (wildcard intact - just)

    With a useless bench and doubts over Evans, Oscar and Sess, I'm struggling. Thinking of Murner to Burner and Sess to Paulinho, but still dont think that guarantees me the full XI. Help!!

      Don't be silly.

      At most you'll need to take a 4 point hit. Depends on what you want to do.

      Oscar has got to go. He sucks. sess will come good. he has needed time. this WILL be his week.

      I got rid of shrek this week, he did me well but lukaku has an unreal set of fixtures coming up and he is a beast also so i'm not losing much. That enabled me to get in the chelsea racist which i'm sort of happy about.

      Still, this game week does suck. Not many are great after a midweek mind you.

      But yeh, oscar see you later mate.

    I while ago there was a Jagielka vs Distin debate. Jagielka has done better recently, but now the expense gap is probably a bit to big to be considering him over Distin. That's just my thoughts though.

        deserved a sticky, that one.

        If you've got money to burn go jags for bonus or coleman for goal/assist, but there's no point stretching yourself when Distin is a solid performer and only 5.1

    A) Shaw > Ward (play Brady)

    B) Brady > Bannan/Shelvey (play Coleman)

    I'm currently on A.

      Saints season ticket holder here. The system will be tightened tomorrow and the players that come in will be drilled to follow the system. However, I expect us to still lose and possibly wiith 2 or 3 conceded. Not confident.

      Its not Boruc absence thats key its Wanyama and Schneiderlin that are the biggest blows. Cork and Davies will do a good job in their place but they are key.

    I am fascinated by the Clyne out and the general unhappiness with him not starting this GW.

    1. He has an inform City next

    2. 0 is probably a better option than getting a minus

    3. It seems that without the two regular keepers their defense has serious problems.

    4. No one ever mentioned that his injury is too serious (e.g. could be back next week)

      I think the main problem is that it's just another player not playing

        true I guess.

        In my case I at least have a confirmation he cannot come into my team from the bench, and especially with playing city I'm happy about that.

    ictor Anichebe has described his West Brom team-mate and England u21's star Saido Berahino as the new "Jermain Defoe". #WBA

    Not exactly the highest praise out there.

      Norwich are going down so I'd be losing Murner. Clyne should be back next week and is one of the rare defenders that can make up for losing a CS by getting attacking points.

    Rooney, Clyne & Ravel all out and not sure if Chester or Ward-Prowse will play so what should i do? 2FT btw

    A) Clyne & Ravel -> Ridgewell & Bannan in
    B) Clyne & Ravel -> Ward & 5.5 (Shelvey)
    C) Clyne & Ravel -> Evans & Mutch/Bannan
    D) Clyne -> 4.7 or less and hope someone else plays

    I have to transfer out Townsend, but id need to replace him with a sub-4.8 midfielder, to afford Oscar->Hazard.

    I already have RavMo.

    Im thinking Redmond is my best bet (would give me Nasri, Gerrard, Hazard, Redmond, Ravmo in midfield).

    Any other budget options sound better for a sub 4.8 mid?

    Too risky to punt on Evans for the good run in?

    This GW I've Coleman as back up. Clyne ➡ Evans would be my FT. What do you all say?

      It's one for the January wildcard for me. Utd are terrible at conceding goals and Moyes has no idea who is favourite 11 is. Moyes teams traditionally pick up in the new year (as do Man Utd) so I would wait personally.
