With Swansea’s home game against Hull set to play out the Gameweek tonight, we look at the lessons learned over the last few days. The impact of two new managers on the relegation contenders, United’s woeful home displays, Chelsea’s porous backline and the Emirates displays of Arsenal’s new boy are all served up this lunchtime:

Pulis has been quick to find another fortress…
A win and clean sheet in each of his first two home games at the Palace helm highlight the immediate impact of Tony Pulis. Following on from the good work of caretaker boss Keith Millen, the former Stoke manager has continued a run which has now earned four clean sheets in five Gameweeks, with a single goal conceded – an incredible turnaround in a backline that had previously shipped 21 goals in the first 10 Gameweeks. The upcoming home schedule looks superb, as does a home/away rotation with Cardiff all the way up to Gameweek 27 – all of a sudden the acquisition of Julian Speroni or Joel Ward looks like a canny move, as Pulis draws up the barricades and transforms Selhurst Park into his new Britannia.

Ozil loves his home comforts…
The Gunners summer signing served up yet another double figure return at the Emirates in yesterday’s draw with Everton. Whilst there’s no doubt Aaron Ramsey has been Arsenal’s most consistent Fantasy performer, Ozil’s explosive showings at the Emirates leave the Welshman trailing – in six appearances in front of his own fans, he has produced 10 or more points on four occasions, whilst Ramsey has managed this twice in eight Emirates showings. The flip side of this is a unimpressive run of form on the road, which has harvested three assists over six games, with blanks drawn on four occasions – a run of three road trips in the next four will prove a real test of his travel sickness.

United’s stage fright at home is a worry…
Eight home games have produced just eight goals as the champions continue to stutter under David Moyes. Wayne Rooney’s weekend suspension was lessened by Robin Van Persie’s return from injury but the champions blanked yet again in front of their own fans – Newcastle had been soundly beaten at Swansea in midweek but walked away from Old Trafford with three points and a clean sheet thanks to Yohan Cabaye’s solitary strike. Last term, United racked up 45 goals at home – more than any other side – and allowed Fantasy managers to rely on the Dutchman time and again, with points hauls almost guaranteed. This time round, only Villa and Palace have averaged fewer goals per game in front of their own fans. Three road trips to Villa, Hull and Norwich in the next four may suit Moyes’ side, then, as his Theatre of Dreams continues to look the stuff of nightmares.

Jose’s defence ain’t what it used to be…
Typically, trips to Sunderland and Stoke were likely to deliver clean sheets for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in his first spell at the Bridge. Yet, in the past week, the Blues have conceded three to both sides on their travels as a real lack of solidity threatens to kill off their title bid – Mourinho has admitted that “individual mistakes” are proving costly as he attempts to strike a better balance on both sides of the pitch. Ironically, at a time where budget options such as Palace have improved at the back, Chelsea have gone the other way – two goals conceded in the first five has been followed by a single clean sheet in the subsequent ten, with 15 goals against over that run. The Special One may have criticised his attackers after the 3-2 loss at Stoke but Chelsea have hardly been goal-shy of late – they have now scored at least twice in all but one of their last nine, suggesting the finger of blame is perhaps best pointed at those further back.

Everton have the form to defy any fixture…
Trips to United and Arsenal in the past week were coloured a dark red in our fixture ticker – an indication of the difficulty level anticipated. The Toffees passed both tests with flying colours, defeating former boss David Moyes and denying the Gunners victory thanks to a late Gerard Deulofeu equaliser as they continued a superb start to the season which has seen them lose just once, away to City. Sitting fifth, Everton have now played every other side in the top seven – aside from the City loss, they have won three and drawn two and look able to go toe to toe with the best of them. Next up, Martinez’ side are handed an eye-catching run of games in the next six (FUL, swa, SUN, SOU, sto, NOR) and may only be derailed by complacency – an unlikely scenario, though, as the Toffees continue to offer us outstanding value for the festive season and beyond.

The Etihad mauling may be the making of Spurs…
A 6-0 defeat at City could easily have had long-lasting repercussions but Andre Villas-Boas’ side have quickly regrouped and come out fighting. Seven points from the last three games sees them sitting just three points off second and has coincided with a new-found eye for goal – Spurs have now scored twice in every game since the Etihad hammering, compared to nine strikes in the first 12 Gameweeks. The defensive solidity that produced seven clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks may have vanished, with the north London club conceding in every game, but Spurs’ improved attacking consistency may well offer us options if they can maintain their recent form in front of goal – three home games in four hand Villas-Boas the chance to make this Christmas a merry one at the Lane.

Meulensteen could be the spark Berbatov needs…
Let’s face it, regardless of his side’s perilous league position, Dimitar Berbatov is never one to roll his sleeves up and get stuck in. While there’ll be no lung-bursting runs in an attempt to win back possession, the Bulgarian offers the Cottagers a real touch of class that is devoid amongst the rest of the relegation contenders – harnessing his talents is clearly essential to Rene Meulensteen’s prospects of keeping the London club afloat. It’s so far so good, then, with Berbatov’s goal and assist in the new manager’s first two matches mirroring his tally from the 13 matches played out under Martin Jol – blanks in the upcoming two against Everton and City would be understandable but with Norwich, Hull, West Ham and Sunderland directly after, the Bulgarian may finally be worth considering again if his displays continue to improve under his former United first-team coach.

      such a difficult one because ozil seems to be the man most assured of minutes. it was telling that in a triple midfield subsitution, ozil was the only attacking mid kept on the pitch.

      i do love the thought of walcott but he is going to be prone to rotation, at least till after christmas

      I'm a bit torn on Ozil. I want to get him when we're not, like, playing a great team every week, but the man seems to be a on a mission to disprove the big game choker stereotype.

    You know what really is bugging me right now?

    I have saved a transfer for the last 4 weeks and made 'responsible' long term moves in the interest of the squad. I have brought Burner in and got a CS from him, I have brought Moxey in and got a CS from him (and missed out on one through being subbed off - any news on that). But I have not got a profit out of a transfer in the first GW for a long time. In both cases these transfers actually worked out as a small loss because I got unexpected clean sheets from Coleman on the bench! Also, my attacking signings have a bizarre trend of blanking in the first week and delivering the next. So far this has happened to Ravel, Hazard, Coutinho and Clyne. Amalfitano of course has been a complete blanker.

    My radar is off on the part of the game that makes it exciting every week - chasing huge hauls. And ironically it's because I am being careful and putting the squad first. I did not get Shelvey this week because A) I felt I needed to prioritize my defence and B) I looked at his schedule and realized he had GW15 Europa GW16 in 7 days and was fairly confident he would be rested for one of the GWs. I would not be surprised if he gets a haul tonight to punish me for my caution.

        That was the third reason I didn't get him - I got the impression Michu was ready to play. The news him and Bony are good for the bench heartens me though I really would want either of them to start to be safe.

      Your approach is more sensible. The big hauls that come from the left-field players are generally followed by numerous blanks.

      Notable exceptions: Cabaye, Fer

            I'll be getting Whittingham though. This move is probably in-line with our current approach though - wouldn't expect a haul, just an assist/goal every other week

      Looking for hauls at the expense of keeping your squad in good shape has a tendency to hurt, especially at this time of year.

        Yeah. I suppose it is better to miss out on a haul than to ruin your squad.

        I suppose the lack of heavy hitting mids is partly why the big hauls seem to have disappeared. Maybe my expectations are too high, I still look back to when I got Bale's hattrick against Villa in for a hit.

      The whole game would normally require a number of players or the ref being in on it.

      Think the issue that's been in the news recently is on spot fixing, fairly easy for one player to be paid to do something like getting booked during the game.

      i think rather than it being the result of the game, goals scored, etc it is more minor things such as yellow cards, red cards which you can now bet on all sorts of variations of.

      of course these do still affect the results of the game but not in such an obvious way as 2 teams agreeing the result will be 2-1 at FT

    Repost as I need a few more replies if you can guys can spare the time to reply :).

    I have been thinking about my transfers for next gw for days but I really can't decide. I have 2 FT and 1.3m itb. My team currently is:

    Gazzaniga
    Vlaar/Chico/Lovren
    Ozil/Januzaj/Coutinho/Ramsey
    Rooney/Aguero/Suarez
    Bench:Davis/Sagna/Rosenior/Kasami

    I was thinking about doing:
    A: Sagna+Chico > Coleman+Distin
    B:Sagna+Januzaj > Barkely+Coleman
    C: Sagna+Coutinho > Distin+Hazard
    D: Sagna+Ozil+Januzaj > Coleman+Hazard+Fer/Barkley

    I personally think my team is best with D since Januzaj's gametime is limited but I'm not sure if it's worth a -4 hit. What do you guys think and why? All help and other options that I didn't think of are greatly appreciated!

      Tbh I'm not sure many casuals would be making Monday transfers. Or would they? I'd reckon most are Friday/Saturday (not knowing about price rises) or on Saturday/Sunday just after the games.

        I think a lot of them look at their teams at the start of the week while at work. The majority of hardcore players only make early transfers when price changes are imminent.

    Mignolet (Lewis)
    Terry, Ivanovic, Evans (Ward, Burner)
    Özil, Ramsey, Coutinho, Ravel (Januzaj)
    Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku

    Two frees. Mig to Howard? Although no back up if Howard gets another booking but I guess I will have an advanced warning to make a transfer.

    The other one I was thinking was Coutinho to Hazard but that gives me 5 players in the Chelsea Arsenal game next week! But Ivan has to go next week so will just leave me with Terry, Hazard, Ozil and Ramsey which all seem like good long term options.

    What do you reckon? 2.5m in the bank

      Mig -> Howard looks good. I'd hold the Hazard transfer as Chelsea's fixtures aren't THAT good after Palace and saving an FT is always nice... you might want Wally as well instead of Haz once he returns. Wouldn't worry about Howard's 4 YCs.

    I'm back for my last attempt.
    New method.

    Team is

    Howard
    Coleman Walker Ivanovic Gabbidon Fonte
    Gerrard Hazard Ramsey Ravel Jedinak
    Suarez Aguero Lukaku

    Gerrard seems to be out for long and Silva coming back.

    So which one:

    a) GW 16: Gerrard -> Redmond (-4)
    GW 17: Ravel - > Silva
    GW 18: Ivanovic -> Evra / Mertesacker

    b) GW 16: Gerrard -> Redmond (-4)
    GW 17: Jedinak Ivanovic - > Silva Mertesacker (-4)

    c) Either (a) or (b) but with Ivanovic -> Burner in GW 17 instead of Mertesacker.
    Extra 2m would allow me to do Ramsey -> Walcott in case needed.

    d) GW 16: Gerrard -> Fer (-4)
    GW 17: Jedinak Ivanovic - > Silva Burner (-4)

    e) GW 16: Gerrard -> Fer (-4)
    GW 17: Ravel Ivanovic - > Silva Kosc (-4)

    f) GW 16: Keep Gerrard. Play Fonte til Gerrard back,
    GW 17: Ivanovic -> Evra / Mertesacker

    Potatoes for every reply. Appreciate it

        I'm pretty happy with my team tbh.

        It's just Gerrard injury ruins it. And of course, if I'm going to do any of these transfers, it's gonna be after there's a definite news on Gerrard injury.

        But I don't think someone will recover from a hammy less than 2 weeks which means he's most probably he'll be back on away games vs City and Chelsea which might not be good for the unfit lad.

        The thing is if Gerrard out for 2 weeks, then he'll be back only to City and Chelsea away in a space of 3 days. Nothing good about that.

        We'll find out soon enough, but if it's an actual injury to his hamstring, as it sounds (rather than a felt-a-little-something precaution) he'll be out a couple of weeks minimum. Trouble is that a projected couple of weeks so easily becomes three or four or more... after which you're hoping the player hits the ground running - which so often doesn't happen. It's a lot of money to have on the bench, so my inclination's nearly always to sell in these situations.

        My couple of cents, anyway.

          I dropped Barkley in order to get a different third toffee. As much as I rate him in real life, he doesn't seem to be doing a lot fantasy-wise.

          Also, note the opponents for Barkley's starts - United, Liverpool, Arsenal. Benched in between. It looks to me like Martinez is reserving him for big games, when he is really needed. Not too many big games coming up so rotation will bite. You need to squeeze everything possible out of Everton's fixtures IMO and I think Barkley will be a waste of a slot.

        That's a good point, could hurt them in a big game like this + being away.

        Both tempting options. Hazard getting rested midweek would definitely raise his appeal, with Lamps playing 90 (I think he will) boosting it further...

    Could I get opinions on two possible moves please?

    1) I have the exact money for Giroud > Rooney and Mignolet > Mannone (Howard is other goalie, Suarez and Aguero other forwards).

    2) Giroud > Lukaku and use extra funds for other goalie / strengthen defence? (defence have Chico, Coleman, Gabbidon, Burner, and Baker).

    Any views welcome!

      Giroud to Suarez, if you havent already.... Giroud to Lukaku is good and you can save up money and looking at Everton's fixtures, its good!

        Yup, already have Suarez thanks. Was considering the S-A-R trio but nobody in my mini league has Rooney, and to be honest I think Lukaku may outscore him with the up and coming fixtures.

        And as you say, it does free up some nice funds 🙂

      There is very little profit to be made on a wildcard. The profit comes later on if your wildcard team is full of players that are in form at the time and continue rising for a number of weeks. You eventually sell them on once fixtures/form have turned and make the real money then.

    I wonder if someone can answer a question for me.

    Let's say i bought Gerrard for 8.5m and he is now worth 9m. When i transfer him out, it shows that I am only being credited with 8.5m. Didn't you used to get half the difference in value?

    I've tried this with a few other players who have gone up in value with the same result....

      You should definitely be getting half the profit. Are you sure you're not looking at the wrong values? There is the the purchase price, selling price, and cost price (or similar titles).

        Ha! Someone has asked my question!! I tried the same last night .... selling Gerrard ... I have .2 in the bank, gerrard I got at 8.5 his price is now 9. so I take him out and my bank turns only into 8.7 which does not give me any profits....I'll try it now to see if it's still doing it,

      Not sure I'd take a chance on either, but if I "had to" I'd go Mirallas. I think he'll continue starting (if Delf comes in I'm thinking Pienaar gets dropped, but I think he'll keep getting used from the bench) + on a lot of set-pieces with Baines out.

      None imo. If pushed I'd go Oviedo. Forget about the idea of POO and compare him to other midfield options. Best available option imo, and that's before you take into account the price.
