Ahead of the Scout team’s visit to the Sky studio, we roll out our usual Friday afternoon update. As always, we assess the Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point beneficiaries and current market trends. We also look ahead to the forthcoming fixtures, offering our preferred captain setup, with one eye on Gameweek 20.

Gameweek 18 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below is a match-by-match breakdown of the players who won the plaudits from the Sky Sports reporters last time out, earning five additional points for the Man-of-the-Match award.

FixtureMoTM
Man City vs ArsenalFernandinho
Cardiff vs West BromCraig Noone
Chelsea vs Crystal PalaceEden Hazard
Everton vs FulhamSteven Pienaar
Newcastle vs SouthamptonJay Rodriguez
West Ham vs SunderlandLee Cattermole
Hull vs StokeRyan Shawcross
Aston Villa vs Man UnitedDanny Welbeck
Norwich vs SwanseaNathan Redmond
Tottenham vs LiverpoolJordan Henderson

Midfielders came out on top once again, with seven awards out of a possible ten –forwards earned two and one went to a defender. Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond notched their third awards of the season so far and continue to offer budget alternatives. Aside from Eden Hazard, who has just over 14% ownership, all the other star performers sit in less than 4% of teams and will have had little effect on our overall ranking.

Curtis Davies is the front runner in MoTM awards with six to his name, whilst Hazard is now hot on his heels with five.

Gameweek 18 Bonus Points

Four goalkeepers managed to achieve five saves or more. David De Gea, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Hugo Lloris and Julian Speroni were the top shot stoppers – the Hammers keeper was the best performer of the week with a total of six saves and a clean sheet, whilst Simon Mignolet is still top of the bonus points stats overall, picking up an extra ten points so far.

In defence, a total of six players gathered bonus, five for tackles and one for passes completed – full-back Cesar Azpilicueta was closest to achieving both, falling just four completed passes short of the required 60. Crystal Palace full-back Joel Ward is still riding high at the top of the bonus table with an additional 18 points.

In midfield, 19 players earned bonus points – 14 for tackling and seven for passes. Centre-midfielders Jose Canas and Ross Barkley were the two to gather both – Barkley rather fortuitously as he managed exactly four tackles and 60 completed passes, the minimum required. Aaron Ramsey still sits head and shoulders above the competition with 28 additional bonus points earned.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout Members can access all the data regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

NameTeamValue% of Managers
AgueroMan City9.818.85%
Van PersieMan Utd105.17%
PaulinhoTottenham6.64.79%
GerrardLiverpool8.13.94%
GiroudArsenal8.52.91%

Our top five this week again find themselves either injured or suspended as Fantasy managers go looking for starters over the festive period. Olivier Giroud is the only name that appears to be on the end of a tactical switch – his form has slipped somewhat in recent week having not scored in the Premier league since November 23.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
RooneyMan Utd9.611.85%
SuarezLiverpool9.99.29%
ColemanEverton6.55.02%
NegredoMan City8.64.76%
LukakuEverton8.63.57%

The impact of Sergio Aguero’s injury is clear to see as Fantasy managers scramble for a worthy replacement, Wayne Rooney looks to be the favorite of the masses with just over 11% drafting him in – worryingly rumors of an injury have surfaced leaving his owners sweating on the team sheet news for this week. Alvaro Negredo and Romelu Lukaku offer alternative options and come in at a slightly more budget friendly 8.6m.

Gameweek 19 Proposed Captain Strategy

Looking ahead to the captaincy choices for Gameweek 19 we have a multitude of options due to the double Gameweek. Indeed, there is even the opportunity for four captains if you can spare the transfers.

Our Strategy:
Luis Suarez (Cardiff at Home) → Wayne Rooney (Hull Away)

Or (using transfers)

Luis Suarez (Cardiff at Home) → Romelu Lukaku (Swansea Away) → Theo Walcott (Arsenal at Home) → Wayne Rooney (Hull Away)

For Saturday December 21, Luis Suarez is the clear favorite off the back of his 21 point haul at Tottenham. Other options include Wayne Rooney and Alvaro Negredo, with Danny Welbeck a United alternative if Rooney is laid up with a groin problem.

After Saturday’s games the options seem endless. Two possible tactics are highlighted above but it really depends on how many transfers you want to make in order to maximize your potential captain points. The most important point to remember is to make sure you end the Gameweek with your skipper on either a United or City player, as both these teams have favourable fixtures in Gameweek 20.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Our own Fantasy Football Scout League is on top of the Private League rankings. With a £1,000 prize to the winner, you’d be mad not to get involved. To join, visit Sky Sports Fantasy Football and key in League Name: FFScout, League Code: 8000112.

The Fantasy Football Club

This Friday, you can catch the The Fantasy Football Club show at 18:30 on Sky Sports One HD. Fenners and Merse will be discussing the previous week’s Fantasy Football events, chatting to the scorer of the first ever Premier League goal Brian Deane and asking Jordan Henderson for his #One2Eleven. On a side note a few of the Scout team will be in the studio including our leader Mark, so keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of the men behind the machine.

Could be....A look at the avg position for Negredo and Aguero shows Negredo had been playing behind Aguero anyway...not the other way around as most believe. That may not evrn have been by design but it is how it worked out on the pitch.

It says he "is in line to start up front".

BBC does not offer any source or rationale for this other than Aguero is injured.

I wouldn't rely on it as a source of truth, but it is curious why they have said this. Perhaps they just like that image of Dzeko.

I would love it. Would also make sense as I believe Negredo has only scored one goal away this season?

Plus keeping him fresh for the Liverpool game. Then again, there is no reason why they both cannot start.

    - Think he's injured, sell him for a hit (included those who had him before)
    - Bring Negredo in as the "optional" replacement

Dzeko takes Negredo place and Rooney (for us who kept calm) play 😎
Imagine being on here when it's Demi time...

With all this uncertainty around the forwards maybe it is a good moment to get welbeck or hernandez?
At the same time invest in midfield?

Not really, he's playing at home to Hull. He's not been doing it recently but surely this isn't the week to sell for a hit.

Clint Dempsey back for Fulham at 7.5 million could be rather interesting (it's not like we are blessed with zillions of consistently high scoring midfielders right now).

I note that one (1) of his 3,126 remaining owners sold him today, after hanging on till now. It's LIKE A GREEK TRAGEDY.

He's undergoing a medical right now. If he came back, it would be for a 2 month loan in the American winter break (the MLS doesn't kick off again till March), so he'd be at Fulham for January and February.

        http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/fulham/10530651/Clint-Dempsey-close-to-Fulham-return-as-Rene-Meulensteen-confirms-striker-is-undergoing-medical.html

"Dempsey scored 50 goals in 184 league matches for Fulham..." Amazing for a midfielder. If the new manager can get the team organised, and Dempsey still has the legs, he could be very tasty.

Alright why am I being slated for Rooney at captain? I know how this game works. If he is fit he starts its as simple as that. If he starts he scores a brace or more this weekend. If he doesn't play I have a decent sub coming on, and Suarez at (v) who either will get me 20 or 40 points like everyone else.

I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt he comes on for 10 mins at the end. Absolutely no point. IF he's fittest enough for the bench he plays. If he is injured he won't be brought on for 10 mins and be risked further injury. Despite us all loving their plight, it still isn't quite desperation time for the Rags, who have won three times in 10 days, possibly four in ten come Sunday night.

Well i was all set to captain Rooney this week but with the injury news you just can't gamble imo, what if United are drawing or losing with 15 mins to go? He would send on Rooney if he's fit enough for the bench.

if you knew how this game worked then you'd know there's always a nice dollop of sods law waiting in the wings. Rooney could be on the bench, united not doing as well as expected and he comes on with twenty mins to go as an act of desperation. he does nothing, u get one point. its possible. just saying!!

Lots of people thought he would score big against villa and ended up in midfield getting an assist. Suarez is in insane form right now unlike anyone else. It's a big gamble!

That said, sometimes when I go against my gut and listen to people on this site it completely backfires on me (like captaining Rooney instead of Suarez last week).

I've been playing fpl for 3 years now and unbelievably I have never had Rooney just because I just didn't like him. Still don't. I get him now and this guy is injured. Never again.

Avoiding players just because you don't like them certainly isn't the best way to play FPL.

To sort out my WBA gamble from GW15 I took a 12 point hit, which would have paid off had I captained Suarez instead of Aguero. Two weeks of foolish moves and now, because of midweek injuries, I'm lined up like this with 0.2 in the bank and already a 4 point hit...

    Krul
    Coleman, Distin, Clyne*
    Yaya, Henderson, Ramsey, Hazard
    Rooney*, Lukaku, Suarez(c)
    Subs: Chesney, Januzaj, Williams, Zab

With two doubtful in the starting XI and one definitely out (Zab), should I take any more hits or just leave the bench as is and hope for a Rooney/Clyne start?
