Wayne Rooney is struggling to be fit for United’s home game with West Ham. Jack Wilshere is handed a two-match ban by the FA. Robert Snodgrass and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel are named in the Norwich squad. Ben Foster is available for West Brom, James Tomkins is back for West Ham, whilst Nathaniel Clyne has returned to training for Southampton:

Reports suggest Wayne Rooney is losing his battle to be fit for the visit of West Ham. The United forward remains a real doubt after missing out in the midweek cup win over Stoke – the Telegraph reckon he may not even be amongst the subs to face Sam Allardyce’s side. Elsewhere, Nemanja Vidic is ready to return after missing the last two games with a minor injury.

James Tomkins has returned to the Hammers squad after missing the midweek cup win at Spurs with an ongoing groin problem, though Sam Allardyce has hinted he’s set to rotate over the busy next few matches.

Ben Foster is back in contention for West Brom’s home game against Hull. Caretaker boss Keith Downing has revealed he has a fully fit squad to choose from, with Nicolas Anelka and Victor Anichebe both available after missing out against Cardiff.

Jack Wilshere has been slapped with a two-match ban for a gesture towards the City fans in last weekend’s defeat at the Etihad. The midfielder misses Arsenal’s upcoming games against Chelsea and West Ham.

Chris Hughton has confirmed Robert Snodgrass and Ricky Van Wolfswinkel will return to the Norwich squad after weeks out with knee and toe injuries respectively. Both players are in contention to start against Sunderland – the Dutchman was ”touch and go” for last week’s trip to Swansea, while the Scot has trained all week.

Sunderland have been boosted by the return of Steven Fletcher and Jack Colback for the home game with Norwich. Both players missed the midweek cup victory over Chelsea with illness but are back in training – Kieran Westwood and Carlos Cuellar remain sidelined for the Black Cats, though.

Gerhard Tremmel is set to start between the sticks for Swansea’s game with Everton, with Michel Vorm sidelined due to knee surgery. Chico Flores is available after serving a one-match ban and recovering from a knee problem, while Leon Britton has recovered from a toe problem.

Villa skipper Ron Vlaar is still struggling to overcome a calf problem, Paul Lambert conceded yesterday. Chris Herd is set to return to the Villa squad, though, as they make their way to the Britannia.

Mauricio Pochettino is optimistic of a return to action for Nathaniel Clyne against Spurs this weekend. Earlier this morning, the Southampton boss revealed the defender is back in training and will be assessed prior to Sunday’s clash at St Mary’s.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Friday’s press conferences unfold.

Anyone for a Gary Hooper differential? Not entirely sold on Negredo, 4 in the last 6, strong fixtures and 1% ownership.

Thanks for the reply lads, Am a big fan of Wally, always had him in my team and he's more explosive than Ozil. Was just wondering if this is the week, when he continues he raids down the right flank and torment Chelsea to pieces, i wouldn't want to miss that 🙂 Moreover, my cup rival had taken a hit. hence my conundrum 🙁

    Gameweek 18 – The game-changing captaincy conundrum

Looking ahead to the next six fixtures Suarez looks primed for points, against Cardiff, Hull and Villa at home and Stoke and the cleansheet-less Chelsea away.

That is except for Gameweek 18 when he turns up at the Etihad. Given that over Christmas and early January many players will leave the armband on Suarez is this the week to take a risk?

If you think Suarez will blank at Manchester City who are your options for the captaincy that week - to take the chance of a rare lead over Suarez captainers?

The teams with the best fixtures that week on paper are Palace, Everton, Norwich, Newcastle and Southampton. Any from those teams worth a look?

What about Rooney (if fit) away to Hull? Or Negredo/Silva/ Toure at home to Liverpool? Can Walcott or Ozil do the business away from home at West Ham? Or can Hazard break down the Swansea defence that week?

Or is safety first the best option and go casual with Suarez?

I'm such a dullard that I'm not sure I dare risk not captaining Suarez. I've been burned before by Lukaku though, even though 'on paper' he is the one to captain. I think Walcott or Negredo/Yaya would be the ones to sway me...if I owned them..which I don/t unfortunately.

There just isn't another good option that week. If United were home to dross and Rooney was fit, or if Arsenal were at home to West Ham even then it would be worth doing but otherwise City's defence means it has to stay on Suarez.

Can't captain Lukaku again. A City player would be most tempting, their home record cannot be ignored and Pool's defence is shaky. That said, I've vowed long ago never to captain Silva again, so it'd have to be Negredo. Who I don't even have yet.

we've seen city score bucketloads at home and I reckon they'll do the same vs pool. so the only way pool can possibly win is to match firepower with firepower and with Suarez, they sure have a lot of firepower! I can see a high scoring game with a city win but Suarez scoring a couple. city will score more but points will probably be more spread out which is why i'm more hesitant to captain say negredo

Too early to say — Suarez will be mine UNLESS there's a shift of power.

Watch the likely men closely to see what we've got in a few games. If Lukaku's form continues to dwindle somewhat then no. But if he starts getting on the end of them again he could be the prime candidate for a gamble. Same could be said or Walzil and Hazard.

I think he's a slight rotation risk now, but helps that he can play on both flanks. Snodgrass will always start on the right you'd think. Redmond can move to the left, but Fer plays there right now, so technically Redmond is competing with Bradley Johnson.

Negredo - lets discuss? Despite hiss goals he seems to prefer playing with Kun and therefore I have doubts over snapping him up.

Will Pelican opt to play him as a lone striker in the absence of Kun? Or is Dzeko likely to partner or will they squeeze Silva into behind? Or simply will Dzeko share the game time.

So many conundrums 🙁 yet critical area of the pitch to get right.

was giving Brady one last chance until this news.

annoyingly 0.1m short of swapping him for Silva

    Walcott the next best shout?

    silva or yaya?

My thinking is yaya is more expensive but more chance of playing/starting games over christmas - esp palace at home.

    What do we think?

Silva guarantees the moral high ground, but Yaya will be on penalties for the next 8 weeks...

Is Pablo > Ramsey worth -4? I kinda like not having Ramsey in my team. Makes me stand out from the crowd a bit

With fixtures stiffening up for Chelsea how do people feel about doubling up on City Midfield? Especially as they are looking to most probably play 451.

    My midfield would be:

    Walcott, Silva, JWP, Ravel, Yaya

And, will play every minute of the busy schedule. Negredo will not play all the minutes, Hooper will also have competition from RVW. I didn't want Rooney playing from deep mid.
