Boxing Day confirms the arrival of one heavy-hitting Gunners midfield asset, only for their star middle man to suffer an injury that threatens to trigger a wave of transfer activity. While thousands of Fantasy managers will be occupied by that particular pairing, a certain Saints striker remains largely ignored as he goes on providing ample points for a paltry sum.

The Game Changer

Theo Walcott’s impact on his return from injury has been almost instant. His brace at Upton Park turned the game Arsenal’s way and confirmed that Walcott is back amongst the top-level Fantasy assets available.

In truth, we’ve been crying out for Walcott’s arrival in our season. His record of 14 goals and 13 assists last season pointed towards great things this campaign but, derailed by injury, Walcott’s Fantasy potential has been tempered as the midfield has failed to keep pace with the output of our forwards. Until now.

Four goals in his three league starts suggest that Walcott can compete with the very top midfield assets, surpassing the scoring rate of his much-vaunted team-mates Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey through sheer goal power. With David Silva and Eden Hazard also showing some consistency, focus is back on the expensive midfield targets.

Owned by just 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, a state of alert was declared with Walcott’s previous brace, mentioned in this article. Today’s returns will heighten that initial interest into a frenzy which is likely to accelerate significantly as January wildcards are laid down.

The Underused

The Gameweek drew focus on our Fantasy forward lines, as we contemplated the gamble of overlooking the devastating form of Luis Suarez. The likes of Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku tempted the armband with so many Fantasy managers boasting one or both in their squads. Indeed, despite the recent injury to Sergio Aguero, few have considered dismantling their “template” strike force – it’s meant that Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez has struggled to get the Fantasy recognition he deserves.

Rodriguez notched a brace and an assist in Southampton’s fine 3-0 win at Cardiff to take him to eight league goals from his last 12 starts. That kind of strike rate, for an FPL fee of just 6.0, allows him to top the “value” rankings on 13.6, ahead of Luis Suarez.

Just as there is no doubt about the established pool of players that make up the typical forward line, there can be little argument on which player offers the best value for those who choose to risk plunging the price brackets.

Right now only 6% have dared cheapen their forward line and take up the Rodriguez option. With further heavy-hitting midfield options opening up, it will interesting to see how the January wildcard changes that particular statistic.

The Selection Poser

Aaron Ramsey’s rise to near essential status has been slowed of late thanks to a harsh fixture list and the potential return of Theo Walcott. Today’s events not only underlined Walcott’s appeal as an explosive alternative to Ramsey, it also saw the Welshman suffer an injury that could signal the first significant bout of sales.

Arsene Wenger has announced that Ramsey’s thigh injury suffered in the second-half at West Ham today, will rule him out for the rest of the Christmas programme. While some will wait for scans and further details, the news will mean Ramsey will sit out matches with Newcastle and Cardiff in the next four days. A Gameweek 21 return on January 13 could be on the cards, although the nature and severity of the injury is not yet clear.

Significantly, the injury comes off the back of a spell that has seen Ramsey return goals in just one of his last eight league matches. While a pair of assists has calmed any panic, that dip in form, coupled with today’s injury, will likely prove the catalyst for sales.

Having risen to 7.6 form an initial value of 5.5, Ramsey has a long way to fall, with thousands set to sacrifice funds when the decision to sell on is made. Again, the January wildcard will bring the Ramsey situation into focus. There’s little doubt that if Ramsey goes into the New Year sidelined, as expected, we will see a lot of movement away from the season’s stand-out midfielder, heading in the direction of Walcott. Current transfer statistics in the FPL already confirm such a trend, with Walcott and Ramsey topping the transfers in and out tables just a few hours after the final whistle.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

podolski just had many months out from injury. Did you really expect him to start?

Also I have seen arsenal many many times, podolski many times as well. He does well when he comes into the side. When he gets into a run of games he becomes lazy and useless.

His defense probably isn't the best. That is probably his main drawback. Also, for Bemba, I know he was out injured, so by no means recently did I expect him to start. Basically, what I am saying is that if he is healthy, he should be starting. I doubt Theo or any other number of attacking mids are that good at getting back all the time. Kind of hard to perform striker duties when you are in your own half. I do appreciate your comments on seeing him play.

Easing him in after an injury I spose? But still you've got serious quality in Cazorla to compete with. Guess we'll start seeing Pod get a few starts.

Flamini brings that extra killer instinct to Arsenal. You don't need a distributor like Arteta when you've got Özil and Ramsey already.

Good as our midfield is no one does the exact job Arteta does of deep-lying playmaker. Flamini is nowhere near the same passer, and Arteta's reading of the game means that he's actually quite good at shutting down counterattacks and getting yellow cards for the team. I think Arteta-Flamini is a good combination defensively and would like to see us take advantage of Ramsey's absence by using it.

Good passer I agree Isacki. But you already have Ramsey and Ozil for that.

Arteta's nowhere as good defensively as he was couple of years back. He's so slow these days, horrible tackler and positional awareness been poor too. Responsible for the West Ham goal too and kept making C Cole look like Drogba (no offence Carlton)

Ramsey's not the same type of steady consistent passer though. Ramsey will be aggressive and take chances sometimes successfully - sometimes recklessly, not the role wanted for Arteta.

If you're talking about Arteta, surely he is not that integral to the team. Or, he shouldn't be at least. He's not that good, and the consistent fouls don't help. The guy is slow, can't challenge for shite, and probably a few other things I'm missing. Just not Arsenal caliber......or at least the caliber for what Arsenal used to be.

oh did you not count the 1.1m in the 105.8m?

also 10 fewer hits than me, I assume you bought in low on a lot of players you've kept most the season?

mmm yes if ki continues there's a ridiculous H/A rotation. Cardiff's and Sunderland's home games are pretty awesome too.

I like it but defence will be weak. Thinking one mid price striker and one mid price mid (Lukaku/Ramsey) instead of Aguero/Sterling and using the change on defence.

I will have a Mannone 4.0 Distin Kosc Coleman Ward Chester defence, not too shabby 😉

I've got a headache but it's all done now (apart from my new benching dilemma!)

    Bench who?

    1) Sterling? - away to Chelsea
    2) Cabaye? - home to Arsenal
    3) Mutch? - home to Sunderland

Tough one, all three have a decent chance of returns this week.

I wouldn't bench Cabaye, i'd be tempted to go for benching Mutch despite him having the best fixture

        Cheers Archie.

Mutch scored against Liverpool away which makes me consider playing him. I just got Sterling in but I might have to bench him.

Thing about having Cabaye is, you never rotate him.

Having erikson & cabaye on rotation will leave you a lot of points on the bench. You sure you don't want to choose one, get a cheapo like sterling then put a bit of money into that ragtag defence of yours?

I am definitely not sure, and I think i made the wrong decision and in a few weeks I will likely ship one out and upgrade a defender

Feels awful having Cabaye on the team so I'll most likely sell before City for a few pennies more if he does anything!

If the Negredo news isn't clear/overly positive should I go ahead and do a 4 point to take out - Flanagan, Ramsey and Negredo and put in Chester, Sterling/other and Rooney?

Might do K.Davis > Harper instead of Howie > Mannone then.
