Arsenal have this evening confirmed Theo Walcott has been sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained in Saturday evening’s cup clash with Tottenham.

The winger was stretchered off towards the end of the 2-0 win and underwent scans on the problem earlier today. The Gunners issued the following update on their official website:

“After coming off injured in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur, the Club regrettably announces that Theo Walcott has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. Theo will have surgery in London in the near future and is expected to be out for at least six months, therefore missing the remainder of the season and the World Cup in Brazil in the summer. Everyone at Arsenal wishes Theo a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him back on a football pitch as soon as possible.”

The news is a massive blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations and Fantasy managers alike. Ironically, Walcott’s Fantasy potential looked to have stepped up a notch at the weekend, too – Arsene Wenger chose to field him as the lone striker in the north London derby, with Olivier Giroud sidelined through illness and Nicklas Bendtner out with an ankle injury.

Having returned from abdominal surgery in late November, Walcott was tentatively eased back into the first-team and produced a pair of assists over four sub appearances. From Gameweek 16 onwards, though, he racked up 47 points over just five starts, with doubles against City and West Ham followed by an assist against Newcastle and goal at home to Cardiff.

The bandwagon was at full pace, with almost 120,000 FPL managers snapping up his services prior to the last two deadlines, as Walcott’s price leapt from 9.1 to 9.6. Indeed, over 50,000 have already transferred the winger in this week alone.

From a Fantasy perspective, today’s news may even prove the tipping point for those who have so far resisted the temptation of playing the winter wildcard early. Walcott’s absence will have a significant effect on many a Fantasy plan, forcing us back to the drawing board for yet another revision.

With games against Villa, Fulham, Southampton and Palace in the next four, Arsenal’s upcoming schedule bodes well for Fantasy returns and is likely to see many turn to Mesut Ozil, with Santi Cazorla also a potential target until Aaron Ramsey returns from a thigh injury. The German has plummeted in price from 10.8 down to 9.9 yet has averaged an impressive 6.3 points per game – joint-top for midfielders – and looks the prime target for current Walcott owners looking to take advantage of those fixtures.

Alternatively, for those unwilling to opt for Yaya Toure as a route into City’s goal potential, now may be the time to turn to David Silva. The pair have mirrored Ozil’s 6.3 ppg but the Spaniard, with an ownership of just 5% and price of 9.3 to his team-mate’s 10.1, may well be the ideal trade.

Guys, like everyone else I am thinking about how to structure my team for the second half of the season. I have a lot of questions I am currently pondering... I would appreciate your thoughts.

    1. Will Nastasic and/or Kolarov be nailed on in City's defense?
    2. Will Silva be nailed on for PL fixtures now that he is back or is there a lot of risk of rotation? His fitness is a concern.
    3. In what position is Ramsey expected to be play now Walcott is out? Can we expect him to be more attacking than if Theo had played?
    4. Do you think Sterling will keep his place in the side and play GW21? He has played well while Gerrard has been out.
    5. Do you think Flanagan will return to Liverpool's defense when he is back? Liverpool still doesn't seem to know their best defensive lineup.

    Cheers

      1. Maybe and probably not
      2. Yes.
      3. Back in his old pre-Walcott advanced position (getting him in as my only Arsenal cover when he's fit)
      4. No, Sturridge takes his spot not Gerrard.
      5. I don't think so, they have other options..Flanagan was a stopgap

        Thanks...!

So you think Nastasic is a safer bet than Kolarov? They both seem good value considering City's home form and I expect all the title contenders to tidy up their defenses in the second half of the season.

But Sterling is still expected to play this week isn't he?

It's strange with Liverpool's defense... 20 GW's in and they still haven't seem to find a "starting" back line.

If I WC to this team it means if i ever wanted SAR in the future I would be looking at -8 probably!

I think here could be some good value to be earned by WCing now.

    Szczesny (Marshall)

    Koscielny Azpilicueta Nastasic (Evans Chester)

    Hazard Ozil Silva Oscar (Canas)

    Suarez Rooney JRod

Leaves £0.4 m then would probably do Oscar & Rooney > Eriksen & Aguero in a couple of weeks...maybe anyway

    Szczesny (Kevin.D)
    Evans-Clyne-Kosc(Turner,Ward)
    Hazard-Yaya-Silva-Mutch(Ramsey)
    J.Rod-Lukaku-Suarez

I'm not sure if I'm totally happy about my team after Theo injury. I need money for Aguero and got just the amount with this team! My defence got kinda poor tho...

    Do you think i should:
    a) Yaya>Øzil, Ramsey>Eriksen
    b) keep the team the way it is. (I believe in Ramsey after recovery!)
    c) Soften my mid to afford a better defence.
    d) other options

Ye, I see your point. But i could downgrade yaya or Silva to Eriksen for an example and build a massive Defence.
J.Rod? Yes. I've had J.Rod like 6 weeks from now and i think he's a keeper with that price.

But thanks for answers. I'll guess I'm going for Øzil-Yaya-Silva-Eriksen(Mutch) after all, but thought it could be a smart move to make Ramsey my Arsenal mid for a cheap coin.

Could be an inspired anti-casual choice - had cracking form in previous season

GW 18, when they both played:

        Ozil
        1 goal attempts - 6 penalty area touches - 9 chances created

        Cazorla
        8 goal attempts - 9 penalty area touches - 6 chances created

Walcott out mean Cazorla will take more shots, no?

I'm thinking the same. Still on free kicks/pens in RVPs absence and Home to Swansea though so might hold for another week. I'm tempted to bring in Adebayor short term but with Lukaku/Rooney both at home this week it doesn't seem right to drop one.

    Quick RMT

    Ruddy McGregor
    Distin Clyne B.Turner Flanagan Bardsley
Walcott :/ Hazard Silva Cabaye Livermore
    Suarez Rooney JRod

Obviously need to shift Walcott but I had just brought him in so reluctant to take a 4 point hit
Is it worth WCing? I have a good team otherwise I feel

    A) Walcott and cabaye --> Eriksen and Lallana? for a hit

    B) Walcott --> Oscar/Eriksen

    C) Any other options?

My current midfield is Silva, Sterling, Barkley, Cabaye and Walcott.

      C) Walcott ----> Hazard or Yaya? Prefer Hazard over Oscar personally (more explosive and less, famous last words, rotation prone). Late to the party with Yaya (as am I) but I'm just wondering whether doubling up on City midfield might be the way to go - they just seem like they blitz anyone on any given day.

Eirkson is a good shout though...

Any intel on Ramsey's return? I think he's the Arsenal cover for Walcott... should go back to a more advanced role in his absence. Would love to have those extra funds to play with. Might get Baines in with the surplus.

Very late to the news, but that is so gutting for Theo. Poor lad. And it's a massive blow to out title challenge.

As for fpl, gotta be Wally -> Ozil with the below squad right? Have up to 10.0m for his replacement.

    Szczesny
    Terry, Evra, Clyne
    Silva, Nasri, Barkley, Walcott
    Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku

    Davis, Sterling, Ward, MOlsson
    Bank 0.6m

Oscar had 4,000 net transfers in over the last hour. Ozil also increasing rapidly. If both rise 0.2 before the next GW which they well could I will have to drop Szczesny or a good defender to bring them in.

Need a good reason not to press the WC button right now..

Probably will do Walcott to Erikson for FT. Question is, would you do:
    A) Nasri to Ozil -4
    B) Sterling to Ozil -4
    C) JWP to Silva -4
    D) None of the above

    Thanks
