Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

Cabaye is a no-no - highly unlikely to be fit for Saturday based on what Pardew has said and should he make it next week, Newcastle's fixtures have turned bad. I think his time has been and gone. Could be wrong. I also think he could be a transfer risk.

Always seems wrong to do a hit when you're benching one of the players you're bringing in, but it seems like a good long term move. I'm never one to shy away from a hit, so I'd go for it.

Back 4 all capable of cleanies, and attacking points in case of Goalman and Zab.

Midfield good, Januzaj has to start for United. Their one bright spark at the moment.

              Front line, good too.

So basically, you're good to go 🙂

How about Evans? Did his injury look serious enough to keep him out of this GW? And Is Howard the right choice instead of Mannone - who is up against Fulham? I still haven't decided on captain and vice captain either. I'll typically leave that until 3am early Saturday morning though 😆

Evans hobbled off with a back problem - impossible to tell how serious but if I had to guess, I don't think he'll be playing this GW.

This is seriously ridiculous! Moyes has to be sacked before its regrettably late.

90% top clubs would have sacked their managers by now.

Any United fans still reckon Moyes is their man?

More than the results, it's the manner in which they're playing.

How can one possibly transform a title winning team to a mid-table level performing team?

Utd have got 20 pts from the 9 matches a fit RVP started, including games against Ars,Liv and Che which is decent form. They are a one man team. Fergie was lucky enough to have RVP fit all season.

By being given £100m+ in the Summer and just signing Fellaini, failing to motivate key players, changing the entire backroom staff, failed substitution and terrible tactics.

I don't disagree with the motivation and tactics issues you have with him but it's not all that surprising. It will take time but he will get the team playing the way he wants and get the players he wants, not just buy for the sake of it.
If you disagree with DM's style of football which would be very fair imo then you should have been against his appointment from the get go. If the problem is the players not feeling motivated and not implementing his tactics well then you need to be patient

Wouldn't expect them to win the title, but atleast you'd expect a decent manager to get them upto top 4 level performances. More than half season gone and I don't recall even a single game where they've played good football even to be considered in the top 4.

New manager will bring in fresh blood, fresh spirit. They look completely devastated and demoralized. Something must change!

Perhaps. But if you look at their team, and compare it to the competition it's not top 4 quality. The quality of other teams' players and managers has increased, Utd's has decreased. For what he's had available top 6 is about right imo.

Agreed. No reason they won't get there either. Next season top 4 will be the aim. Then they'd hope Moyes will have em challenging

Exactly, similar to what happened to Liverpool over the past few years and there transition took longer than it needed to because they changed managers and picked the wrong managers too often.

Indeed and I'm glad to say BR is being fully supported and backed over the long term, and that isn't reliant on everything remaining as rosy as it is currently

            I don't know man.

Probably the best strikeforce suited to the PL prior to this season. In absolute footballing terms, one can argue they may not be top 6 quality. But they've got players who have tons of experience and shone in the league (Jones, Carrick, Vidic, Nani, Young) + players who have potential to be world class players (Kagawa and DDG).

I certainly think any decent manager would have got United to top 4.

C'mon man just look at Liverpool/Tottenham/Everton's squads in comparison. Utd are in this ballpark in terms of quality, not in the same realm as City/Chelsea/Arsenal

A strikeforce that hasn't been fit though. Carrick has had lenghty injuries too. Even SAF couldn't get Nani, Young, Jones and Kagawa performing consistently. Vidic is a year older, same with Rio. It's really not a top top squad. When you compare it to Chelsea(Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Willian, LRamires, Lampard) or City (Silva, Yaya, fernandinho, Nasri) or Arsenal (Ozil, Cazorla, ramsey, Podolski, Arteta, Walcott) the midfield is just nowhere near as good.

My expectations were to be challenging amongst the big boys(not winning the league but at least top 4), Last 16/Quarters in the Champions League and a Domestic Cup win.

The only one I can see happening is us going through to the Quarters of the Champions League.

I think the big question to ask, just like why AVB was sacked, is:

Do the players, coaching staff, etc believe in David Moyes?

If no, I can't see how he should stay.

That would be short term knee jerking. I don't think it has anything to do with ambition. Utd have a long term ambition to remain one of the biggest forces in world football. It's not all about immediately winning a trophy.

AVB was fired for taking Spurs to 5th place.

Maybe it's just me. United were the most fearful team in the league for the past 2 decades, just in awe to see such a big force in turmoil all of a sudden.

Don't disagree with that, I disagree that the way to combat the current struggle is a knee jerk round-a-bout of managers. That will likely ensure they don't get back on top
