Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

I guess Azpi in def, and in that attack, while it sounds crazy you should probs bench one of the City/Spurs players you've doubled up on, so I'd say Ade is the weakest link there despite his explosive potential!

i can't understand this line of logic.
bench points don't count against you. Do you think that being spoiled for choice decreases one's chances of winning at FPL ?
would you have us believe that a 5th mid option rotation is a poor strategy?

It looked like Koscielny wasn't going to rise the other night either, and yet he did. I think lots of people wait until that last half hour and if it looks too close for comfort they do the transfer then just in case, thus pushing the player past the threshold right before the changes.

Need help fast. 1 FT and .1 itb. Let's say I really want to bring Ozil in. Walcott goes out but problem is I'm .4 short for Ozil.

    Mignolet (stead)

    Coleman, Koscielny, Burner (celustka, ward)

    Hazard, silva, Walcott, sterling (JWP)

    Suarez, Rooney, lukaku

What say you? Take a hit and bring in Ozil? But who else do I transfer in and out?

Id only consider the hit if rooney confirmed out but we never going to know that with Moyes.
Caz, Lallana or Erikson all decent options. I think people are getting too excited about oscar after a decent 38 minutes off the bench

Question: Those of you WCing to Boruc/Davis, are you not slightly worried Gazzaniga might start a game before Boruc returns?

Got itchy and hit the WC button. This is how i have it laid out right now. Suggestions?

    Mannone Marshall

    Coleman Dawson Sagna B.Turner Ward

    Lalland Yaya Hazard Ozil Januzaj

      Good GK rotation.

Strong midfield - i like it

      Would possibly avoid Spurs defence.

Remy not in best form and not the best fixtures

Personally not a huge fan of gk rotation cos often go the wrong one and its really annoying. Don't like Remy. Think giroud could be good for upcoming fixtures. Midfield nice but januzaj not my preference, I'd look for my 5th mid nailed on.

    To all Moyes naysayers:

League games a fit RVP has started (so ignoring Newc where he was patently not fit) - 20pts from 9

League games RVP has missed/not started - 14pts from 10.

Most felt last year they were a 1 man team, the above only confirms it. Give the man a break.

Gabbidon, Kos, Coleman ( Baker, Collins )
Silva, Hazard, Lallana, Sterling ( Walcott )

Like a lot of people I can't afford Ozil in for Wally..
    0.1m short.

It's frustrating. Their prices will change soon
Better off taking a hot and ousting Rooney as well?

Rooney has increased a lot in price since I purchased so a bit cautious..

Lallana a good replacement got Wally to see me through until the WC
Or go for the hit with Rooney out too to accommodate Ozil..
    It's tricky..

        What's the latest on Rooney..?
If Rooney is back this weekend for sure then I think the Wally- cazorla move could be ok..
If Rooney is out I may just go for the hit..
Both Wally and Rooney had increased in price a lot so it's a shame to have to sell both but prob for the best..

Have been reading the past 10 pages or so looking for discussions on Ozil vs Cazorla. Now the big plus in Ozil's favour, and probably the main factor, is his PPG, which is almost double that of Cazorla. However, Cazorla is still tempting me due to this:

    - He's played 90 minutes in the last 3 games - the first time this season (don't know whether form or injury has prevented this earlier in the season)

    - His OPTA stats - compare Ozil's last 6 matches with Cazorla - Ozil has had 7 shots to Cazorla's 22 (1 shot a game vs 3 shots a game)

    - Ozil creates more chances for his team mates but with every other fantasy player this is considered secondary to goal threat. Why not with Cazorla vs Ozil.

It's a really tricky one. If I thought Cazorla was coming into form, I'd take him in a heartbeat. Finance isn't a problem and I'm not using my WC so the decision isn't irreversible.

Over analysing it as usual! 🙂

The other point is that Wenger has options on the left (Podolski, Wilshere). With Walcott out, I don't think he will start Gnabry just yet, and Ramsey is probably still a week or two away. Surely, that means Ozil will start out wide, Cazorla maybe middle and Podolski or Rosicky on the left?

I see it that way as well. I really don't see young players like Gnabry and AOC starting over established players like Podolski and Cazorla. Arsenal are trying to win the title here.

Ozil won't be shifted out wide, Wenger preferred to move Ramsey in the form of his life out there last time Walcott was injured.

It'll be Gnabry, Rosicky or Wilshere on the right, with Cazorla left and Ozil CAM. Podolski to get some gametime for Caz at some stage too, Rosicky or Wilshere could also play from the left.

So basically I'm saying Caz won't start every game, rules him out for me. Now personally I'm not getting Ozil either, for the reasons you say, lack of goal threat but I can see why people have done.

Ramsey when fit for me I think.
