Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

...because the season is over at the start of November? I don't know the scheduling then as I was -1 years old at the time but if we go off the current then only about 10 matches had passed.

i feel it was a proper question. i said united were second from bottom in season 86-87 november which is pretty relevant as you were trying to convince united were great before ferguson. and all you say afterwards were brainfarts

They were pretty consistent, as I establish, they just had a blip the exact season he took over.

Don't resort to ad hominem, you lose credibility. I would appreciate it if we could keep this civil.

      That's soooo misleading.

United were in a relegation spot when SAF took over sometime in mid-season and took them to mid-table by the end of the season.

Well then you should see your government representative about the quality of education.

                    42 divided by 2 is 26, 26 divided by 2 is 13. 13/42 = 25%

There's your math lesson for the day.

(and don't turn this into some nonsense about me writing it backwards, you know I was right in the end)

That's a lot different to the last 5 seasons.

12/13: 1st in the league, 11 points clear
      - round of 16 CL, beaten by Madrid, Qtrs of FA Cup

11/12: 2nd in the league on goal difference
      - terrible in the cups, ended up in Europa league

10/11: 1st in the league, 9 points clear
      - semis of FA Cup, lost to Barca in CL final

09/10: 2nd in the league, 1 point off of 1st
      - terrible FA Cup, won League Cup, qtrs of CL

08/09: 1st in the league, 4 points clear
      - Semis of FA Cup, won league cup, lost to Barca in CL final

Simply no comparison imo. Moyes inherited a squad of winners.

I think people underestimate how big of a roll RVP being out has played. Obv we would be better under fergi but RVP won us so many games last season and hes been out for most of this one. Now some might point to Moyes and say it was his garbage new training methods that caused all the injuries but thats another story

United will be fine. In some ways they're similar to Arsenal have been recently in that they've put faith in their youngsters and the youngsters aren't up to it yet. Just as Wilshire, Gibbs, Ramsey and Walcott stepped up, so will Cleverly, Jones, Smalling etc. They have some duds, just like Arsenal did, but one or two new buys and a bit more time and they'll be fine. Really.

Just wondering, if you can have ANY player as a punt - on GW 22 & GW 23, who will it be?

Unlimited budget, and it's a purely 1 week thing.

GW 22 is Yaya / Strurridge.
    GW 23 is RVP.

Hey lads, hope you have a good start to 2014!

I have a couple of questions...

I have noticed that Ramsey's price has been allowed to fall.. how come some players prices are frozen and others can fall? or is this not the case?
    Anyway, is his price recoverable?

Secondly, need to ship Wally... I can get anyone but am fancying Ozil or Yaya. Rest of the mids are Barkley Livermore Ramsey and Hazard.

    Cheers in advance!

Having sold Theo for Mesut, I have one free trade remaining. I have both Cabaye and Rooney. But no coin in the bank to upgrade Cabaye to Eriksen or Lallana. Should I sit tigjt and hope one of them plays, use the FT one one of them, or take a 4 pointer and swap them both?

Team of Scary monsters and super creeps as follows:

    Howard
    Coleman Sagna Wilson
    Hazard Silva Ozil Cabaye
    Rooney Suarez Lukaku

    (Davis Ravel Chester Ward)

    Cheers

Nice team. Ravel isn't injured anymore - played in the cup (unless he got re-injured?) so he should be in. I'd probably do cabaye-lallana though personally so ravel is a backup for rooney and you don't need to use chester.

Cheers Mucker, but as I mentioned I can't afford the Switch to Lallana (selling value of the latter is 6.6). Don't mind Ravel subbing on but more concerned with either Chester or Ward)

I am in that awkward place where I stand to lose a lot of value if I sell either and quite like the look of both United and Toon's fixtures after this week.

Hmmm. I guess it comes down to your confidence in rooney to start

Or you could go wild and bring januzaj in. I doubt rooney+januzaj will both be out of the 11!

Since we seem to be starting a manu debate every few minutes let me start the next one!

Why does all the attention seem to go to the manager and squad? To me it seems the decline began as soon as the owners brought in a big chunk of debt to a formerly prosperous club. I feel like Fergie was biting his tongue the whole time over that.

Glazers should take about 99% of the heat. Putting a massive amount of debt on the club and forcing Ferguson's hand in any potential transfer negotiation by being far too restrictive when it comes to negotiation contracts..

      It's not the owners.
Fergie believed in the youth squad could break into his team the misunderstandings with Pogba & Ravel, etc. and he even made an average United team look champions and took them there.
Moyes inherited an average United team where he feels he should understand first on what he has.
A signing could turn his fortunes.

There's few clubs that are run in 'the right way' these days, and people talk about them being restrictive with cash, but there's only two other clubs (in England) that would pay Rooney 300,000 a week, spend so much on a striker approaching 30 with a poor injury record and spend 20 odd million on Fellaini.

Fergie was a massive spender before the new owners came though. I'm pretty sure the debt makes a difference, but it doesn't mean they can't still be lavish now and then.

      Rubbish.

One minute it's "SAF had the same squad and won the league at a canter", the next it's "The owners are to blame".

Just face the cold, harsh reality that the players are under-performing and the manager is out of his depth at the moment and struggling to find his feet.

      You can't blame anyone else.

RVP was a huge factor last season though. And they somehow overperformed - definitely wasn't a good squad. Southampton had something like 25 shots and 60% possession **at old trafford** last season and lost... and that wasn't unusual

really wasn't a troll effort..I am right about everything I've said even if I can't do 13 divided by 42 πŸ˜† in simple bullet points:

        - the vast majority of the blame goes to the Glazers. They brought massive debt to the club and tied both hands behind Ferguson's back by restricting potential contracts for incoming signings who then went to clubs that paid them what they wanted
        - the next set of blame goes to Ferguson for spending any available money on defenders/wingers/strikers with potential rather than just buying a center mid because if he couldn't have HIS man then he didn't want an alternatieve
        - the rest goes on Moyes for keeping on with the same exact team sheets over and over despite them obviously not working and seemingly not having any grasp whatsoever about the right substitution or the time to make it

Interesting points. Georgie was a magician, unique, not of this world. He created a proverbial silk purse from a pig's ear in the twilight of his rein.

But leaving the Glazers aside, I put a lot of the blame at SAF's door for leaving such a relatively poor squad. Plus Moyes doesn't appear until now at least to have any imagination in the transfer market (Fellini FFS!!) not any tactical nouse.

I would try Zaha over Valencia at least once! Valencia has no left foot, can't cross, and kills counter attacks by hesitating allowing the opposition to get back in position.

I would have recalled Nick Powell and given him a chance in the team, he can't have been worse than Cleverley has been at times (and certainly Anderson) even if he does prefer to play a bit more advanced than CM.

Would have given players like Will Keane, Vermijl, Petrucci, and Tunnicliffe a chance..

Most importantly I wouldn't have sacked the entire staff in one go..

Rooney should play in his natural position up top and Kagawa in his best position in behind. Although horribly out of form, I would give Nani a run in the team as well. He was magic a couple of years back and surely doesn't become a pish poor player "overnight"?
