Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

Just watched some highlights from the manu game last night.. That Januzaj chap makes a strong case for a 5.1 mid. looks the only player at manu who offers some threat. it's him vs Puncheon for me and right now Januzaj has the spot. Being a manu player he'll rise like mad if he scores/assists too(check his history).. Who else going for him as their 5th mid? started 9 of the past 14 and been involved in 12 in total from 14. unless manu sign someone he should be good for 14+ starts till the end of the season maybe.. could be gold(as long as you dont start him as a 4th mid and expect too much)

Let's see what signings United make - that will be the biggest impact on his gametime imo.

We all know he's good. But we also know that Moyes is in a tricky position.

He'll want to play Janu but he'll also want to protect the lad in the early stages of his career. Moyes mat be having a bad time at the moment but he's not an idiot.

I guess Janu will continue to be a rotation risk so he won't be in my WC team. It's nice to have a 5th mid who you can rely on. Even if it is for 2pts every week.

Mmmm. Norwich are pretty dire defensively away from home though, and with Baines back Lukaku should get plenty of opportunities. Liverpool are a little unpredictable away from home, and like you say, Stoke rarely get battered at home. The flip side being Suarez is Suarez.

Lukaku just seems so unreliable and unpredictable. 2 points vs SUN, 5 vs FUL, 2 vs HUL, 2 vs cpl (when they were crap!) and 6 points vs STK.

Seems not to turn up against the bottom half teams.

    Mannone (McGreggor)
    Kompany, Mertesacker, Coleman (Gabbidon, Chester)
    Silva, Ozil, Hazard, Eriksen (Mutch)
    Suarez, Adebayor, Rodriguez

Have 2.7mil in the bank that I was intending on using to get Aguero back when he is fit. To do that I will need to swap out Adebayor and Rodriguez for Aguero and Berahino depending on fixtures I will play either 3-4-3 or 2-5-3

Posted this almost a day ago.

've seen a lot of uncertainty in people's knowledge of the current defensive set up at Crystal Palace.

At the start of the season their defensive 6 lined up like:

    Ward --- Gabbidon --- Delaney --- Moxey
    ----------- Jedinak ------- Dikgacoi -----------

Parr, a LB, was injured and returned recently. Around the same time as this, Dikgacoi got injured. This caused a reshuffle.

In came Mariappa for Dikgacoi, forcing Ward into a CM role. Parr also returned in place of Moxey.

So, they've recently been lining up like this:

    Mariappa --- Gabbidon --- Delaney --- Parr
    ----------------- Jedinak ----- Ward -------------

Gabbidon, Delaney and Ward are nailed on and will play if fit. Parr and Moxey compete for the LB spot but it seems like Parr currently has the upper hand.

When Dikgacoi returns from injury, he will either remain on the bench, OR will come into the side for Mariappa. The latter would mean Ward will drop back to his favoured RB position.

    Conclusion:
SAFE PICKS: Gabbidon, Delaney and Ward
ROTATION RISKS: Parr, Moxey and Mariappa

I like your back 3, I'm looking at that but prob with Coleman due to 1.2m difference from my Coleman sp but there is one option. Lukaku not justifying his place at the moment > bony or Jrod prob the other option. Or you could just make the .2 on the markets

Locked in a -4 hit earlier today before Walcott dropped 0.1

    Remy out, Rodriguez in
    Walcott out, Ozil in

I don't expect Ozil to score that well this gw but by the time I wc in gw24 he will be 10.5-11.0 so it was important to get him now. It's more of a tactical move.

    Mignolet
    Terry, Coleman, Mert, Kosc
    Ozil, Y. Toure, Hazard
    Suarez (c), Welbeck, Rodriguez

    Boruc, Burner, Sterling, Cabaye

Just on Welbeck. People commenting that he was shite today. The player rating I read said that he was one of the players that tried & he put himself about & worked tirelessly trying to win the ball. He was let down by poor service from m/f. Admittedly he didn't execute the few chances he got but this would be down to fatigue due to having to do the midfielders job. I love Welbeck & I know he will be on the scoresheet this week.

He's rising 0.1 so he will be 10.0 soon. Yeah there's always that possibility & if that happens I'll just get rid in my wc but he's just had 2 weeks rest so I expect him to get better. I read an article earlier today in which he said he's really looking to take control of the 2nd half of the season & that he wants to stamp his authority. The beauty of owning high priced players is that if it doesn't work out you can then afford any player you want.

That is the aim. Of course I don't know all the teams so leaders need to get a comment to me with proof for a mention. Most weeks in Last Man Standing an unknown wins, Blue Teets is leading the After Xmas League & got a mention this week. More mentions will be available with the 2 new leagues this week. 4 leagues instead of 2 until GW30 when the FPL Open starts so my part in the Community Round Up will increase.

Front 8 good though Rooney has come off the boil, don't think he should be in a WC team even as a placeholder for aguero.
Your defence all decent choices albeit maybe one more premium defence would help it. Can you stretch to kos? Not checked the rotations for the others.
Team looks fairly cheap overall. You got anything left over?

What do you think of Gnabry as a short punt until Ox and Ramsey is fully fit? He was maybe AFCs MoM against Spurs, and is available for only 4.2.

4.2 is very tempting. He is far from nailed on though so get ready for him making cameo appearances, missing out altogether when you need to play him, then scoring a brace whilst sat on your bench

    Good Morning Gentlemen

Have to wildcard now and tinkering if I should keep Terry or not (got him in 6.4).
Which one you see best option and why?

Every combo has Coleman & Kosh + Ozil, Hazard, Silva

    a)
Def: Terry and benchboys Chester & Ward
Mid: Rotate cheapies like Puncheon & Livermore (or even play 4-3-3)

    b)
Def: Bardsley, Burner, Chester rotation for one spot
Mid: Eriksen and bechcheapie for 4.6 max

I like be because Eriksen can be easily changed for Ramsey/Cabaye etc if needed.
But on the other hand, I would really really like to have che defender 🙂
Terry => Azpli one option, but not much I can do with that extra money.

    Thanks

It was pretty obvious he wouldn't rise, really if you're calculating the hours left before the price rise and his rate of NTI per hour.

It was a fair guest though, it's a close one indeed and there is always a chance of rapid transfers due to the percentage he's at.

Yeah noticed that earlier. Before I went to bed yesterday a quick calc indicates he would be short by 2-3% by the time of price rise. Couldn't' remember the exact calc obviously. But I did the transfer anyway hoping idiots like me would give a help in the rapid transfers so that he increased today.

There is no crystal ball for predicing proce rises unfortunately. Ozil was one of those bordeline cases that could have went either way (I think he ended up missing a rise by 0.5% or something).

When you see someone saying "x player will rise tonight" read it as "i think x player will rise tonight" & go to TotalFPL to do the math for yourself.

Hi all and thanks for replies (as always )
I did my own research (see below ) and I couldn't see him get the required transfers in but for sure at the time it seemed a given on the site that he would rise.
Hey I'm not blaming anyone I'm just making people aware of doing their own homework and doing a little maths before committing , just don't take guys instincts on it that's all ,
