Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

    Please rate my WC team:
    Marshall-Mannone
    Coleman-Terry-Koscielny-Ward-Chester
    Silva-Ozil-Ramsey-Hazard-JWP
    Aguero-Adebayor-Suarez

Temporary position for Ramsey and Aguero will be filled with Eriksen & Lukaku
    Bank: 0.0

My question and need your input:
    A. Is it a good practice to have JWP as 5th midfielder, or should I downgrade Terry to have super 5th mids (Januzaj/Barkley/Morrison/Whitts)?
    B. Do you think Ramsey's super effect will continue? Could Eriksen/Cabaye/Lallana be a better option than him?

    on WC:

as I'll be getting Aguero as soon as he is back, I need to choose players who will stay in my team for the next 2-3 weeks only - forward will be upgraded to Aguero and midfielder downgraded to some cheapo to provide funds.

Whith which combination would you go out of:

MIDS: Lallana (have JRod), Eriksen, Mirallas, Whittingham
    and
FWDS: Lukaku, Giroud (have Ozil), Bony, Adebayor, Negredo (have Silva)

    ?

    Thanks!

For those 2-3 weeks my mid-line will be very strong IMO:

Ozil-Silva-Oscar-Cabaye-one of those mentioned in original post. So I can afford benching Cabaye this GW because of both fixture and injury.
And later on, one of mid-priced mids will have to be dropped to allow me funding Aguero acquisition.

            I personally like this plan

I get that, I just think Baines is worth 0.7m more then Coleman. If you don't like Coleman I would rather give Eve def a miss.

The CS Baines will collect Coleman will cover and people are selling Lukaku since they feel is lost form, so basically you are getting Baines for his attacking threat.

I just don't think its worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Coleman (gutted I didn't get him from the start. If I did I would probably have both), but I like Baines more - 0.7m is easily worth it for corners, free kicks and set pieces imo, plus he is more of a BP whore

                Coleman - 13 Baps from 20 games
                Baines - 15 Baps from 14 games

Relying on Mannone alone might not be the best idea. I'm trying to find a way to avoid it myself 🙂

Celustka is out of favour. The new kid, Alonso, played in his place last night and I think is expected to be favourite. Wes Brown is just 0.1 more but doubling on Sunderland is a bit mad anyway.

I don't quite understand the midfield. 'oil' is Ozil but who is 'all lanta'?

Hull's home CSs have come vs Villa, Stoke, Fulham, WHM, Norwich and Sunderland and they have already played Cardiff and Palace at home. Realistically perhaps only 1 more CS likely at home (to WBA). I think he's a bad pick.

and your front 8 are all strong players so you'll need to bench one every week, whilst playing with a weak defence. Needs a lot more work I think. Get yourself a cheap MF or striker and beef up defence.

    Daniels Szczesny
    Coleman Gabbidon Turner *Kompany Clyne
    *Mutch *Eriksen *Oscar Özil Hazard
    *Adebayor *Agüero Suárez

I am want to get this team in GW 23WC. Now i can afford the team with 0.1 itb. Currently *players are not in my team, so i am afraid i shall face £ shortage come gw23. So should i play WC this week baring Aguero.

Shouldn't make that much of a difference on that score. He's almost certain to go up again on Friday with an NTI well in excess of 100%. So NTI 'wasted' this week would probably happen regardless.

have a look at chester's home fixtures (since that's all you ever play him in i suspect given kosc, skrtel and coleman) and think how many clean sheets you actually think he'll get. 1 i'd suggest vs WBA. There must be better options out there. Baker for instance at the same price.

Suggestion for an improvement to the Season Ticker. Enable sorting by home fixtures. When looking at possible rotation options it would be a quick way to zero in on which teams have the easiest set of fixtures for the GWs you'll actually play them.

As an example, if you sort for the rest of the season on clean sheets, Sunderland are close to the bottom. But you'd only ever play a Sunderland defender at home and their home fixtures are surely amongst the easiest of everyone's. It's also probably a good reason why they are bottom of the league.

yes of course. But when you could have a tool that would do that automatically then there's no dragging needed, it will be all in front of your face and empirically backed up.

If people could easily do what you're suggesting i don't think we'd be seeing as many WC teams with Chester in them.

The reason I've played my wc now is apart from aguero the team i want now is the same team id pick in a few weeks so i don't see the point in waiting? And Ive kept money to get aguero. Even if there is a couple of big players bought I'd want to give them few games before id consider them

This thing of packing the mid by having a cheap third striker won't last long. People will be looking to upgrade their J Rods/Ade's to Lukaku/Sturridge soon, by taking a premium mid down to someone like Ramsey. Also, there might be injuries to key players or things affected by new signings so although you think nothing will change, it will

I wouldn't give Dempsey a second thought otherwise but Andy has a fine history and knows his onions, I'm slightly concerned...

Barkley is in for a gr8 second half to the season imo... May get the odd rest here and there when fixtures pileup but imo he's the standout choice below 7 million. He's been very threatening the last few games i've seen him. A bit expensive @ 5.3 for the 5th mid spot but i think i'll pay the premium.

I think he's a fantastic footballer (better than Wilshere in my view) but I'm still not convinced he's going to get brilliant FPL returns. 5.3 is probably about right I reckon.

      feck, make up you mind.

      Yesterday it was Januzaj.

The day before it was Puncheon.

      Before that it was Whits.

Let me guess, you are buying Huddlestone tomorrow?

    Martinez on Everton TV

"I would say Leighton will be back in training on Thursday. We'll then have to assess him."

"Sylvain and Phil Jagielka both have got probably a period of between seven and 10 days, but I would say two weeks is the most realistic time"
