Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

    Want to get this sorted before price rises

    Front 8 is:
    Silva Wally Hazard Cabaye Sterling
    Rooney JRod Suarez

    Determined not to use my wildcard so whats the best option to replace Wally with Rooney, Cabaye and Sterling doubts.Cant afford Ozil. Should I downgrade Cabaye, G Johnson or Rooney so I can?

    A) Wally --> Oscar/Cazorla
    B) Wally + G Johnson --> Ozil + any def under 5.2
    C) Wally + Cabaye --> Ozil + 6.5 mid
    D) Wally + Rooney --> Ozil + Ade/Giroud
    E) Wally + Cabaye --> Oscar + Lallana

    Only have 1 FT am I better take the hit or just wildcard?
    Any help appreciated.

      Hernandez won't work in a team like we have now. Did you watch him v Swansea, poor first touch and an inabilty to hold the ball up to allow others to support him.

      He plays on the shoulders of defenders and likes balls played through, we lack the ability to provide him with that atm.

        Didn't see that game but how can you expect him to be great given no gametime. It's virtually the same side as when he scored loads two seasons ago and he scored a fair few last season too.

        Surely he's a better option than packing the midfield and playing Giggs at his age?

    Alright! A bit of fun. I was wondering about how far we go in definind the Template Team at any given stage, so got to looking at the most owned players in each position. I'm surprised that Ozil is still a 19% held and that Suarez is at 52% (I don't remember ever seeing that, though back in the days of CRonaldo (c) it might well have happened).

    Of course there are some assumptions here - in the Casual spirit and for practical reasons I've plumped for the most owned players overall, maxed at three big hitter CBs (6.0+ current value) and one top category keeper (5.5+). Here's the list, with a total current TV of £108.4 - this 15 would have set you back just over £96 mill on the opening day.

    Mignolet - - - £5.5 - - - 37.1%
    K Davis - - - £3.9 - - - 11.5%

    Coleman - - - £6.7 - - - 44.6%
    Mertesacker - - £6.5 - - - 28.8%
    Zabaleta - - - £6 - - - 23.3%
    Fonte - - - - £5.1 - - - 17.4%
    Whittaker - £3.9 - - - 15.6%

    Yaya - - - - - £10.1 - - - 45.1%
    Rambo - - - £7.2 - - - 38.2%
    Hazard - - - £10.4 - - - 32.5%
    Barkley - - - £5.3 - - - 31.1%
    Lallana - - - £7.3 - - - 23.1%

    Suarez - - - £13.3 - - - 52%
    Lukaku - - - £8.7 - - - 32.2%
    Giroud - - - £8.5 - - - 19.9%

    How many of these players are in your pre- and post-Jan WC teams? 🙂 I think I'm looking at 5 / 5 I think... perhaps I need to work harder to get some of these guys in 😉

    I swear down if on Friday Moyes says Rooney 'has a chance' I'm going to march down to Carrington and fling him out myself.

      Manchester United manager David Moyes: "It is difficult we just need to keep going. We didn't do a lot wrong. I thought the referee was going to blow in our direction for the first goal. I couldn't believe he gave a free kick. It was a terrible decision.

      "We are all just laughing at them at the minute. We get a player booked for doing the same. It looks as though we are having to play them [officials] as well as the opposition at the moment.

      "I thought the players, our crowd were unbelievable, the players deserved to get a result. It's a two legged game and I am really looking forward to the second leg."

    Can those who are on early WCs explain the reasoning of using it now when players you want to bring in are not yet fit? Am seeing mention of Aguero and Ramsey transfers already planned, but isn't there a risk of other injuries on your squad, or of them not coming into form for 2-3-4 weeks? I don't quite understand using a WC but still wanting to make more moves later.

    Perhaps could be because I don't even know who to take a one week punt on, let alone WC in, however.

      agree!! United should make some key signings. Arsenal may sign a player. Chelsea claim to be looking for another new striker. And the likes of Zaha and others will get loaned out, affecting many lineups. #shortsighted

      If its only an additional player or two - you can use your FT that week to buy them - perhaps keep a little extra cash back too to ensure you have enough.

      Thanks for the replies -- too much uncertainty for me to use it now. I burned myself this fall by using my first one to get rid of players I was pissed at with no clear plan of who to bring in as a replacement.

    If you were the Glazers, with massive interest to pay and the fear of no CL football, what would you do?

    A. Give Moyes the £200m war chest and hope he can turn it round
    B. Keep the cash for a possible new manager in the summer
    C. Get a new manager in now to spend.

      I'd let him try to spend it, but having to sanction the buys myself. Can't buy players if none want to go to Man U, and I wouldnt let him waste it like he did with Fellaini.

      They might buy one player in Jan and no matter what I think Moyes will get a second season.

      They will want to act quickly from a business perspective -- I know it's a bit coarse to think about the team this way, but no CL will be immensely damaging to their brand. The newer fans who draw much ire from diehards are massive supporters from a revenue perspective, and are probably quite fickle.

      A. With help from Fergie, or whoever it takes for him not to make rash buys and actually gets the players he needs.

      1 season crisis for me, so have to enjoy it while it lasts 🙂
