Daniel Sturridge notches on his return from injury as Luis Suarez plunders the points yet again. Steven Gerrard continues a series of consistent displays as Charlie Adam and Peter Crouch impress for Stoke. Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo grab a goal apiece as City see off Newcastle, while Samir Nasri is stretchered off and Yaya Toure also withdrawn due to a back problem. Sergio Aguero hands City a major boost by declaring he is set to return for next weekend’s home game against Cardiff:

SAS Back on Track
Liverpool’s trip to the Britannia looked no easy call. Stoke had been beaten just once at home all season and shipped a mere seven goals in front of their own fans but, with Luis Suarez running amok yet again and sidekick Daniel Sturridge hogging the headlines with a superb cameo upon his return from injury, the visitors put five past the Potters yesterday afternoon. In a weekend where many of the frontline alternatives failed to live up to expectations, Suarez showed yet again why he’s head and shoulders above the rest this term – the Uruguayan is the only forward to have picked up double figures over the nine matches so far, with two goals and maximum bonus earning a 13-point haul.

Sturridge’s goal and assist in just 24 minutes off the bench brings him firmly onto Fantasy radars ahead of four home games (AVL, EVE, ARS, SWA) and trips to West Brom and Fulham in the next six for the Merseysiders. His exploits have been understandably overshadowed by Suarez this season but there’s no denying the former Chelsea man’s superb consistency – he has now scored or assisted in 10 of 13 appearances, averaging 6.5 points per game. Priced at just 9.1, with an ownership of 12%, his Sunday afternoon endeavours have persuaded many managers to pencil him into wildcard drafts over the last 24 hours.

Gerrard Maintains Consistency
Back in the first XI, the Reds skipper picked up the points once again thanks to a converted spot-kick. Gerrard’s resurgence as a viable Fantasy asset has clearly coincided with Suarez’ return from suspension in Gameweek 6. The England captain failed to produce returns in any of his first five league appearances but, when fielded in the same starting XI as the Uruguayan, has now scored or assisted in 10 of 11 – an outstanding level of consistency. Whilst his owners and would-be suitors will be expecting more, Gerrard admitted post-match he’s set to be deployed in a more withdrawn role, suggesting he may have to rely upon set-piece and penalty duties to continue racking up the points with such regularity.

Adam and Crouch Proving Value
The former Liverpool duo are ticking over as solid, mid-price Fantasy assets after grabbing a goal apiece in yesterday’s 5-3 home loss. At home, in particular, Crouch has picked up over the last few matches – he has now netted in three of the last four at the Britannia and since returning to the Stoke first-team in Gameweek 9, has produced 56 points from 13 appearances. This equates to an average of 4.3 ppg, offering decent value for a 5.5 price forward ahead of back-to-back games against Palace and Sunderland. Similarly, Adam is another under-the-radar option. Despite playing just 1,048 minutes this term, the Scot’s long-range effort against Rodgers’ outfit took his tally for the season to five goals – equalling his combined haul over the previous two campaigns. If he does earn continued game time under Mark Hughes, Adam – at 5.6, with an ownership under 1% – could be one to consider, given his current scoring ratio.

Dzeko and Negredo in the Goals as City Keep Winning
Having racked up five goals between them in the midweek cup win over West Ham, it was no surprise to see Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo lead the line again as Manuel Pellegrini started with a 4-4-2 at Newcastle. The Bosnian notched for the second time in three league matches before making way on 51 minutes, whilst Negredo benefitted from being handed the full 90 minutes for only the second time in City’s last eight road trips.

The Spaniard’s away displays have been notoriously poor so far – prior to yesterday, he had produced just a single goal and assist on the road all season but his last-ditch strike helped boost his recent raft of new investors. With four home games in six (CAR, CHE, SUN, STO) and a trip to Norwich also on their agenda, City have the platform to continue the form which has harvested six consecutive wins, making Negredo a likely target over the next few days. Given that he’s produced 15 goals in as many games in all competitions at the Etihad, Fantasy interest looks set to escalate regardless of Sergio Aguero’s availability.

Injury Worries for Pellegrini but Aguero Return is Imminent
After the game, the City boss confirmed all three of his substitutions were down to injury concerns.

“Nasri has a serious injury with his knee – it was directly a red card. Maybe it’s medial ligaments. We’ll see tomorrow what happens with him – Yaya’s had a problem with his back all week and it was worse today during the game. Dzeko also has a problem with his calf from another foul by Newcastle.”

Certainly, the nature of Nasri’s withdrawal is worrying for his owners. Stretchered off following a poor challenge by Newcastle’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, the Frenchman may well be facing an extended spell on the sidelines – Jesus Navas’ Fantasy prospects could be set for an upturn if Pellegrini’s initial fears are realised. Toure owners will be hoping his withdrawal is merely precautionary. There’s every likelihood he’ll be rested for the midweek FA Cup replay against Blackburn before City square up to Cardiff next weekend. However, given that Pellegrini also rested the Ivorian for the previous league match at the Etihad, his recovery will be keenly monitored.

Encouragingly for Pellegrini and Fantasy managers alike, Sergio Aguero posted a hugely optimistic update on his return from a calf complaint. In an interview with his own official website, the Argentine has revealed he expects to be 100% fit to face Cardiff at the Etihad next Saturday afternoon:

“I’ll be ready for action this week. My injury is improving slowly. Recovery’s going very well. I’m back to sprinting on the field and moving the ball around. I’ll be fully recovered by the Cardiff game and depending on how the week’s training goes I may be able to show up for a few minutes on the second leg against Blackburn for the FA Cup.”

Kolarov in the Points Again
The City left-back continued his recent impressive showings by picking up a 12 point haul in yesterday’s win at St James’ Park. With an assist, clean sheet and maximum bonus, Kolarov, at 5.3 in FPL, is starting to make a persuasive case for his inclusion as a regular under Pellegrini – he has now returned a goal and four assists over his last six league starts. Indeed, the Serbian has now been named in the City first XI in six of the last eight Gameweeks to suggest he is likely to start the majority of matches ahead of Gael Clichy. However, given that the latter has started 10 of his side’s first 21 fixtures, there’s no doubt Kolarov’s acquisition doesn’t come without risk. Intriguingly, yesterday’s 2-0 win was the first time in 10 attempts that City have produced a clean sheet with Kolarov in the starting line-up.

How much for Drax in FPL? Negredo and Soldado started at 9.5 so probably thereabouts.

But what of Giroud? Surely they'd be rotated until at least next season. Makes Drax less appealing.

          Hahah, no. I'm just speculating.

It does sound like one of the more solid transfer rumours and also makes a lot of sense in terms of what Arsenal need and also fits the way Wenger like to turn wingers into strikers.

If only Arsenal had a Suarez or Aguero they would of had a realistic chance of actually winning the league this year. I'm an admirer of his endeavor but I'm afraid that extra yard of quality in comparison to the above necessitates a world class striker. Immediately!

The trouble with Sturridge...actually three things:

    1. It means 2/3 of your strikeforce coming from one team. When Liverpool blank, its a red arrow

    2. He is not as good as Suarez or a fit Aguero. This means he is your "third" striker and he is kinda expensive for a third striker

    3. If you are going down this, expensive strikeforce route, surely you are better off doubling up on City (with Negredo) who should score more goals?

1 - That just doesn't seem to happen very often
2 - True so I guess that depends on your transfer value, or you could avoid Aguero altogether if you had say 2 of Negredo, Silva and Yaya.
3 - I disagree, i think becasue of City's options Sturridge is more nailed on.

He is however constantly getting injured.

Looking at fixtures and the amount of goals Liverpool score against weaker opposition, then comparing it to City away form with a home game against park the bus Chelsea, then add uncertainty over Aguero minutes. And it would cost 4 points to get Aguero and 0 for Sturridge. Easy decision for me.

      1) Isn't a problem as you'd likely have this trio for more than one GW.

      2) I agree, this depends on your team structure. He's got a great PPG though so that money could be a good investment.

      3) City might score more goals, but they also have more people able to chip in with Silva Fernandinho Yaya Navas, so the goals could be more spread out. Hard to know how this will end up.

Conclusion, I think Sturrdige is a good choice for third striker. I might go Bony instead as I'm low on cash. If you are going Sturr, this GW would be a good one to get him in.

If we could port 30k followers to that account overnight, we would consider that. As it stands, it would be folly to start from scratch.

Hi Alberto...sorry it's a bit jarring - as a regular visitor and poster, I can appreciate how it might be. However, a lot of our followers may not visit the site as often as yourself.

From our perspective, we've got almost 30k followers and, up until now, we've not been reaching out to them to let them know when new articles are published etc. That's pretty silly from a website with such a following so it's long overdue that we started using Twitter in this way.

        Hi Mark,
I understand the move you've made here, it's a great idea to promote the articles which are probably what draws most to the site.
I would still be concerned though whether tweets of Hot Topics are attracting the right market segment, as many of them aren't especially FPL related and are more to encourage premierleague conjecture. Could this perhaps be dissuading potential and current users from the merits of the site as an FPL resource as much as it attracts people into the site?! That's for you guys who have created this beauty to decide, but as a regular Hot topic tweets are too much for me.

It's great that with such a growing site you can contact me directly and so quickly, another example of how good this website is!

Lost on last page. I'm tempted to use my WC this week to sort out my fringe players and bring in the likes of Baines/ Januzaj/ Silva/ Sturridge/ Aguero but think I know in the back of my mind that I should keep hold of it another week - would appreciate advice!

    Szczesny

    Ward/ Terry/ Coleman

    Cazorla/ Hazard/ Toure/ Cabaye

    Suarez/ Ade/ Lukaku

Yeah hold until next week I think, as Walker's good cover for Toure in case he's out, when updated bench players can really prove their worth (as many top players have tough fixtures).
I'd chuck Ramsey on that list too btw.

However you could argue that opening-day defeat continues to colour the perception of Wenger’s team. Throughout October and November no-one would admit they were title contenders and then December was supposed to find them out. Even resting as many players against in-form Tottenham in the FA Cup third round was a ‘mistake waiting to happen’.

[Direct Lines from Arsenal's official Match Preview vs Villa.. I read this before every match and I think for the first time , there is Anger coming out from the Club]

Arsenal's problems will come, when they themselves (i.e. the players; not Wenger) realise they can win it.

There's a point at which you have to ignore value and simply aim for maximum points. If you go for value throughout the team, you end up with a lot of medium scoring cheapies who you can't captain 🙂

Get the elite strikers regardless of cost and use value to fill your team around that.

Ade > Kun sounds good. Sterling has a bit of a question mark hanging over him. Sunderland's Ki could be a good buy. Definitely not Collins. Can you manage Bardsley?

In any case, I'd wait on news about Yaya. If he's out for any length of time then you could offload him to fund the Aguero move.

So you did get Boruc&Ward :D. As I said earlier downgrade Merts to Kos/Sagna and upgrade Colback to Ki.

Only problem isthat you dont seem to have a plan to get Aguero but Negredo could also do well with Aguero.

Thanks for the Boruc&Ward suggestion Kuqi 🙂
        Negredo + Ozil >> Aguero + Ramsey
Mert >> Kos is on cards.. Mert's prise could rise today..

    Wildcard: Active

    Boruc (Davis)
    Kosc, Kolarov, Brown (Parr, Chester)
    Silva, Hazard, Ramsey, Lallana (Pozuelo)
    Aguero, Sturridge, Suarez

No money in the bank and if Ramsey/Aguero don't play then the £3.9m boys have a decent chance of a clean sheet.

Pretty template, albeit without Coleman... but any room for improvement?

It's amazing how few WC teams Kolorov was in last week compared to this. He has been rotated with Clichy all season; are people that jerky round here?

Kolarov is worth a gamble but need to have good 1st def sub. Atm Kolarov seems to be nailed.

He will never be nailed. But he's first choice ahead of Clichy at the moment which hasn't happened before, so he'll probably start 2/3 of games

I see a subtle shift in this week's WC drafts to less premium mids e.g. two instead of three) in order to afford a bigger strikeforce.

e.g. Hazard [Silva or Ozil] [2 from Ramsey / Lallana / Eriksen] Cheapo
    Suarez Aguero [Sturridge or Negredo]

One swallow doesn't make a summer.

I'm loading with premium MIDs who have had a bad week.

I don't expect this week to be the norm.

return of Sturridge basically, plus potential Yaya injuries and people shying away from Silva.

I think I'm still going heavt mids and cheap 3rd striker. Also swerving Aguero saves a couple of mil. Getting him in if he starts to fire on all cylinders again will of course cost me hits.

this could still be a valid option with J-Rod. Soton's fixtures are good but mostly away from home - JRod's away form is excellent, whereas Lallana's big scores have almost always come in home games.

It is hard to know when to get Aguero. Once he is firing, he will be near essential again, but that could happen straightaway (vs Cardiff) or take a few weeks

I like to give players a 70+ minute game first. Saved myself heartache on Walcott when he came back last time.
A judgement call in the end MJ, sometimes one way works, sometimes the other.

Same here (re 70 mins priciple). I think Cardiff is 60-70 mins at best, coming off the bech at worst

Negredo delivering this weekend could continue his rise to a potential option ahead of (or even alongside) Aguero - three home games in four, CL rotation coming up.

Agreed. There's every chance that with the form he's in, he could outscore Aguero while he gets back into gear.

admittedly aguero has a history of explosive returns from injury, including at the start of this season, but Negredo could be ready to explode at the right time as well.
