Jose Mourinho has wasted little time bolstering his already bulging midfield prospects with the signing of former Benfica bruiser, Nemanja Matić. The midfielder – now a full Serbian international – returns to Stamford Bridge only three years after he was deemed surplus to requirement by previous boss Carlo Ancelotti:

After making his first acquisition of the winter transfer window, the Blues boss took time out to praise his new arrival:

“I am very pleased that Nemanja is returning to Chelsea. He has grown as a player in Portugal and has become a fantastic all-round midfielder. I am sure he will become a very important member of the squad and help us to achieve our ambitions.”

The midfielder went on to explain his decision to return to the Bridge and is keen to make an impact second time around in the Premier League:

“I insisted on leaving because I think this is the right moment. I want to improve, I want to play in a better league. I am very happy for this opportunity to be back at this club. I feel very good because of that and just want to say I will give my best to help the team and make the Chelsea fans happy.”

The History

Ironically, it was Chelsea who made Matić a high profile player in Europe, having signed the Serbian, then a 21-year-old prospect, for a reported £1.5m from Slovakian outfit MFK Košice back in 2009. Matić went on to make just two Premier League appearances for the west London side in his debut year, as Chelsea wrestled the title back from United under Ancelotti’s guidance.

The following season saw Matić move on loan to Dutch club Vitesse. The youngster made 29 appearances in league and cup over the course of the campaign, bagging a pair of league goals, but it was his time in the Portuguese top tier where he earned his stripes.

David Luiz’s hefty price tag, a reported €25m, was sweetened by makeweight Matić, then valued at around £3m, as Chelsea acquired the Brazil international centre back from Benfica on a memorable deadline day in January, 2011 – a day better remembered for the Torres/Carroll transfers.

Matić quickly become a regular fixture for the Portuguese side, making 95 competitive appearances (including domestic and international cups) and scoring nine goals in just under two years at the club. His honours include helping Benfica take the Taça da Liga (Portuguese League Cup) crown in 2012 and helping himself to three player of the month awards and the Primeira Liga Player of the Year in his full season (2012/13) – coincidentally, the same award won by David Luiz in his final season in Portugal.

The Prospects

At 25 years of age, Matić returns to Stamford Bridge as a rangy, tenacious, defensive midfielder who looks tailor-made for a role in the double-pivot in Mourinho’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Tall (six foot four, to be exact), powerful and uncompromising, he’s an aerial threat whose aggression will be welcome in both penalty boxes by the Blues boss.

Described as ‘cool and canny’ in possession, the versatile Serbian has been fielded in a more advanced berth in half his league games this season. With a multitude of creators already in place, though, he’ll vie for a regular role in front of the Chelsea back-four where he’ll typically be deployed to stifle the opposition’s attack.

Prior to Sunday’s win over United, though, Mourinho made it clear that Matić will have to earn the right to start and, with one eye already on the 2014/15 campaign, suggested the next few months will allow the midfielder the chance to settle within the Blues’ squad:

“Matic is not starting the game. I feel that I owe that respect to my players. He’s my player now, but I owe this to my other players. They are doing well and playing well. It wouldn’t send the right message to them if a new player came and immediately played in the team. So I won’t use Matic from the beginning. I’m sure he will [have an impact]. I’m happy he came now because it gives him these five or six months, so the beginning of next season is not the beginning for him. He will be in the team in this evolution, in this moment of building up a team we want the team to be for many years. I’m happy that he came in this window. Not because we desperately need him – we don’t, because our squad is a good squad and we have good balance – but in terms of how we analyse our squad for the future, his profile is the perfect one.”

Certainly, with Ramires, Frank Lampard, David Luiz and John Obi Mikel all vying for the double-pivot places, the competition is fierce. Matić’s arrival could, however, spell the end of Luiz’ occasional stints in midfield and the knock-on effect will increase competition for the central defensive places, where the Brazilian would threaten the security of starts offered by Gary Cahill alongside John Terry. This, perhaps, will see Fantasy managers eye up Cesar Azpilicueta as the safest of the budget-friendly options amongst Mourinho’s defenders; the 5.3 priced Spaniard has now started 11 of the last 12 Gameweeks in a Blues defence with four clean sheets in six.

Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Matić’s overall lack of attacking output is sure to keep him off our radars but, if he nails down a regular role under Mourinho, a cost of 6.6 in the Sky Sports game isn’t overly pricey, where his prospects for passing and tackling bonus will somewhat boost his appeal. As his new manager hints, though, it may not be until next summer before the Serbian firmly establishes himself as a legitimate first-team contender.

Care to rate my wildcard team?

    Boruc Davis
    Coleman Azpillicueta Kolarov Chiriches Chester
    Silva Hazard Eriksen Ramsey Ki
    Aguero Suarez JRod

I know what you must be thinking here, too many benched points each week - a real rotation nightmare. However i think this team offers a lot of flexiilty - allowing me to play a very strong 4-4-2 when players get benched. I like the idea of thinking of kolarov as almost an aditional midfielder (far better value than the midfielders for 5.4)

I think Terry and Cahill have been our best CB partnership this season. Luiz can't be trusted in defence. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Ivanovic play alongside Terry on occasions seeing as he lacks pace and can't cross. Azpilicueta and Cole should be our fullbacks with either Cahill or Ivanovic partnering Terry.

The way I see it: Not sure you'll ever play Puncheon, will you? It'd have to be Puncheon/Cabaye/Lallana rotation right? Too risky for me, I'd get a bench warmer, and upgrade the cheap GK

If someone is injured, doesn't start for some reason, or (in Cabaye's case) is sold to Paris St.Germain, then there's no better 5th midfielder. Puncheon's underlying stats are more competitive than you'd think.

Anyhow, he would rotate well with Ward/Burner, not for fixtures necessarily (ward same team) but for matchup/formation strategy

I'd get rid of Cahill, though. Maybe Bardsley instead and upgrade at GK

Looks like a solid WC team, OP!

I'm on WC. Haven't had Yaya all year, so I'm getting him in. It probably won't gain me too much but I'm 250k and at least he will stop killing my rank.
Thing is .. I'm seriously tempted to sell Coleman. I got him at 5.8 so won't lose as much value as some of you.
I don't like the Everton fixtures. I could have a Chelsea def and an Arsenal def with 3 rotating cheaps. And an amazing front 8 with Cabaye (transfer aside) and AJohnson rotating for a little while.

    So, crazy to sell Seamus?

It depends on the price you got Coleman for. If you got him for 5.5 or less it's a huge risk and it turns out to be a mistake its a costly one to rectify

For me selling Coleman is a risk I don't want to take just yet, because of his potential for big scores that I don't want to miss out on. Everyone else in my league has him, and if I sold now (bought at 5.0) then I wouldn't be able to bring him back in

I was going to ask the exact same thing, I'm really thinking of getting rid of Coleman myself because I don't think he's going to score 5 more goals till the end of the season (seriously a 10 goal season for a defender who is not on any type of set pieces).

And I'm not convinced by Yaya myself but its really damage limitation.

    Hazard Eriksen Januzaj Cabaye (Mutch)
    Aguero Negredo Suarez

Was gonna use my 1FT to get rid of negredo / Wilson.
Holding on to WC but really don't know who I would get even if I did it this week.

    Thoughts anyone?

    Close your eyes,

Imagine you are worse off than you are, you have my rankings. 427k Overall, and 100+ points down in at least 2 of your MLs, poor I know.

Would you even be as crazy to consider dropping Suarez? I haven't captained him for many weeks, as I feel he is ruining fantasy football. I miss the days where you actually had to check who your opponents were captaining, now I could tell you who all of my ML rivals will captain in GW32, without even checking their team or fixtures.

I've done well since I stopped captaining Suarez, Wally got me a lovely run of points, and Silva managed to bag me the same as Suarez, despite me hiding behind the sofa for the majority of the game.

So with my refusal of making Suarez my captain, shall I just drop him? Many players are hitting form, and are looking favourable.

Eto'o, now looking like Chelsea's No.1 striker, worth a punt? Chelsea strikers have score 5 goals together in the last 3 games, Torres 2 and Eto'o 3.

Bony is looking strong, with very favourable fixtures, next up a leaky Fulham team at home, wham, CAR, sto to follow that, next 4 matches against teams all in the bottom 8, again, worth a punt?

Sturridge now scored 2 in 2 with an assist, with his first game back a mere cameo appearance for 20 minutes. Sturridge can arguably limit any damage that may occur from dropping Suarez, as he is likely to grab an assist, or hopefully even score off any Suarez assist.

Aguero, can now be the bigger hitter upfront, with an immediate return last game, he looks as sharp and explosive as ever, and maybe the 2nd half of the season will belong to Aguero and not Suarez.

Dropping Suarez, I'm sure, will be widely regarded as 'stupid' or 'suicidal'. However, why can't it be viewed as an 'inspired' or a 'flair' decision. After all this is a game, and it is about having fun. I do agree, however, that winning can inspire much fun, but wouldn't you love to win without Suarez? Imagine the bragging rights. I discussed this briefly on an earlier post, but have had longer to think about it today. This morning it was just a crazy idea I had dreamt up, but now it is became a more feasible plan of action. Great differential. And for anyone out there that is reluctant to captain Suarez, much like myself, possibly a plan of necessity, as we know for sure, the Suarez captain bandwagon will run for a long time yet.

So if anyone here, including myself, decides that the have the guts to do the deed of dropping the un-dropable man, maybe we will benefit. If you can choose a good captain each week, that scores close to Suarez, and blank he may produce will be like gold dust to anyone chasing points.

    Here ends the reading.

I like that Wakey, they look like they could rotate every game, and get points each, every game. Dropping Suarez would allow for a large midfield and an upgrade to Baines.

It's the only way out of the template front line but relies on City scoring at the same rate.and a bit of a tail off of Suarez's points...(which has happened of late) .It works out cheap so allows upgrades all over. High risk but at 400k..why not..

If you feel you can pull it off then go for it.

The trouble is that despite the weeks where you match his output, or beat it by a small amount (e.g. captaining Silva or Aguero this week) there will be some of his huge hauls which missing out on would send you tumbling down the rankings again.

24 points at home to Norwich, 22 away to Spurs.
Chances are he will have at least one more game like that before the end of the season

GW16 (his haul vs Spurs) I had him in my team, but didn't captain him. I scored 68 points overall, 13 points higher than the average of 55, and yet due to his high ownership and large number of people captaining him I fell 50k in rank from 235k to 285k
This would only be exacerbated if you don't have him in the team at all and could lead to some big falls in rank. He has 53.4% ownership overall, but of active managers Its probably closer to 80-90%

Great point! I also didnt captain him! was a horrible week, and I also missed the 24 points against Norwich!

I know it will hurt more if I dont have him at all, but whats the point playing a player that I don't want to score points, because everyone has captained him but me, I just see him in my team as a blank spot right now, I don't want him to score well, as I won't captain him.

This leads my to my thinking of taking him out?

Hmm, I suppose maybe you're right, its no fun hoping players that you own don't score really. If you're really never going to captain him then you could do, see what you could do with the rest of that budget.

Thats what I've come to the conclusion of. I really can't see myself captaining him again. I loved having him early and captaining him, but now it goes against my nature, I want the differential and I don't want now to be a hypocrite and captain him. Which leaves me really with no choice but to get rid of him!

Just a very scary decision to make! As my selling value is £1m less than his buying price!

Got through it. Good post :):

I think dropping Suarez is suicide. No matter what you think of him as a person or player with an ugly past (in football terms) you have to acknowledge he has taken his game to a new level this season under Rodgers/Liverpool.

The guy has been kicked off the park on more than one occasion this season and the guy has dealt with that aspect admirably. The guy must be as hard as nails to consistently deliver game after game this season and he has become a joy to watch. World class.

I couldn't agree more, he is a fantastic player! So will you be captaining him until the end of the season? My only reasoning is that so many will be doing it, its not worth having him in my team if he isn't my captain.

And I am reluctant to captain him, as I am chasing, and I have already told so many people that captaining Suarez is 'boring' and 'ruining the game'... I can't go back on that! 😀

The third striker debate is fascinating. We know Aguero and Suarez and nailed on for "most" of us, although I accept not all. So what do we do with the 3rd striker? I guess it falls into 3 camps in my mind.

    1. Pick one and keep him so maybe a pricey option like Sturridge, Negredo or Lukaku. SAS, SAN, SAL etc.
    2. Rotate your 3rd striker with your 5th midfielder and alternate between a 352 and a 343 - so JRod with Noone for example etc. You might regret leaving points on the bench here though.
    3. Transfer out your 3rd striker every 1 or 2 gameweeks on a more dynamic basis to play fixtures/form eg Bony now and then move to Carrol in a couple of GWs.

Im tempted by option 3, although I accept the risk is I might get diverted by other issues in my team which might prevent it being an effective strategy.

    Any views?

Played my WC last week and decided on this lot:

    Boruc - Mannone
    Azpilicueta - Chester - Coleman - Koscielny - Ward
    Cabaye - Hazard - Ki - Silva - Wilshere
    Aguero - Sturridge - Suarez

    Bank = 0.9
    FT = 1

Had planed to upgrade Wilshere > Ramsey when he returned which would have left me with noting in the bank but now I have to keep an eye on these Cabaye to PSG rumours. Bought him @ 6.3 so my current SV is 6.7. If he does leave in the coming weeks how does Mannone, Cabaye & Wilshere > Kelvin Davis, Eriksen & Ramsey for a hit look?
