As the dust settles on another weekend’s action, we take a moment to consider the lessons learned over the nine matches played out so far:

Özil’s Appeal is on the wane…
His first five appearances in the Premier League brought two goals and four assists – 39 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms – and sparked huge Fantasy interest, but Mesut Özil’s explosive introduction seems a distant memory right now. Another blank against Fulham compounds a run of performances which harvested a single assist in the last five as the German’s owners begin to reassess his value. Already, over 32,000 FPL managers have sold the Arsenal playmaker since the weekend, with many drafting in a cheaper option in order to facilitate Sergio Aguero’s acquisition up front. Yes, he may have five sets of double figures this season and is capable of explosive hauls but a real lack of consistency has seen him blank in nine of 17 appearances now. With Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere offering Arsenal alternatives across the price brackets and Aaron Ramsey hopeful of a return for the Gameweek 23 trip to Southampton, Özil looks suddenly expendable.

Adam Johnson may just save Sunderland and earn himself a summer in Brazil…
In a game where his side’s proverbial ship looked to be sinking, the mercurial winger grasped the helm to steer Sunderland from dangerous waters and rescue a morale-boosting point. Perhaps inspired by his manager’s midweek comments (highlighted in last week’s ‘Say What’), Johnson’s assist and game-saving strike took his tally to four goals and a couple of assists in the last two appearances, or 35 FPL points to you and me. As Gus Poyet’s side look for inspiration and Roy Hodgson seeks an alternative to Theo Walcott on the England right, the 6.5-priced Johnson’s exploits bring him onto the Fantasy radar ahead of three encouraging fixtures (STO, new, HUL) for the Wearsiders. With wildcards in play, expect his stock to rise.

Trust Tony. New side, old system…
Having spent 10 years at Stoke forging one of the Premier League’s meanest defences, Tony Pulis knows a thing or two about clean sheets. Since taking over as Ian Holloway’s successor, the new Palace boss has helped his side deliver a Fantasy-friendly four shut-outs in 10 league matches as his philosophy of hard work and iron discipline has steered the Eagles out of the relegation zone. Palace have now kept out their visitors in three of Pulis’ five home games in charge, and with the likes of Joel Ward, at 4.2, delivering 3.9 points per game under the new manager, Pulis’ arrival at Selhurst Park has made freeing up budget at the back that little bit easier.

Navas can flourish to offer a City midfield differential…
City’s FPL options are looking very healthy indeed. Yaya Toure ended Saturday as the league’s top-performing midfielder, while David Silva furthered his case as a premium investment option with another assist against Cardiff. Between the lines, Jesus Navas is building a portfolio of his own. In securing City’s second, Navas furthered an astonishing home record – the Spaniard has now returned points in seven of his last eight appearances at the Etihad for Manuel Pellegrini’s free-scoring side. The downside is that Navas has scored just a single goal on the road all season but, with Samir Nasri laid up for a couple of months, he has the chance to better his away day woes with a series of regular starts and offer us a tempting City alternative to the premium-priced Toure and Silva.

Pellegrini isn’t likely to freeze Dzeko out just yet…
Much of the pre-match ramblings centred on the “will he, won’t he” over Sergio Aguero’s anticipated return. Despite being handed just half an hour off the bench, the Argentine didn’t disappoint with a goal and assist against the Bluebirds, ensuring the weekend bandwagon picked up in pace. Alvaro Negredo’s owners will be a little worried by Saturday’s turn of events, though. Manuel Pellegrini chose to reward Edin Dzeko with the full 90 minutes and hauled the Spaniard off for Aguero instead – with the Bosnian’s strike taking his tally to nine goals in the last 10 across all competitions, it seems Pellegrini will surely continue to reward the 6.7-man with game time as he battles for silverware on four fronts.

Benteke is back on track…
For a long while, Christian Benteke had cut a frustrated figure in an Aston Villa jersey. The big Belgian’s goalscoring drought stretching back to Gameweek 5, when a hip injury forced him off early on at Norwich, with his FPL price plummeting from 9.3 to 8.7. But with two goals in two games – against sides with title ambitions – the bruising Benteke appears to have rediscovered his swagger. It remains to be seen whether he can reach the heights that produced 14 goals from January 1 onwards last season, but with a strong run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks (WBA, eve, WHM, car, new, NOR) and his self-belief on the up, the Villain could be setting off on another bountiful run.

Swansea are in free-fall…
A home defeat at the hands of Tottenham puts the Welsh club joint bottom of the league’s form table with one point from six games. With key first-team players such as Michu, Michel Vorm and Pablo Hernandez stuck in the treatment room and an ever-increasing injury list that saw back-up centre-half Jordi Amat taking his place in central midfield yesterday, Michael Laudrup has it all to do. The Swans sit just three points off the bottom now and have managed a single clean sheet in 13 – although the fixtures now fall in their favour (FUL, whu, CAR, stk), investing in the Laudrup’s side looks risky business right now, with only Wilfried Bony showing any sign of promise amidst their current slump.

The battle for the third striker spot is heating up…
With Luis Suarez an undisputed essential and Aguero’s bandwagon approaching full speed, the third forward slot looks our one chance for a differential as the template starts to narrow up top. Benteke and Bony threw their names into the hat at the weekend, whilst Daniel Sturridge has now registered 18 points in his last two appearances since returning from injury. Tim Sherwood’s decision to move to 4-2-3-1 and field Emmanuel Adebayor boosted the Spurs forward’s prospects yesterday afternoon – a brace and maximum bonus took his tally to 49 points in six appearances under the new manager. Fernando Torres’ knee injury lessens the options at Stamford Bridge and the 0.6%-owned Samuel Eto’o is the very definition of a differential, with a hat-trick against United highlighting his eye for goal. With more popular picks such as Olivier Giroud and Romelu Lukaku misfiring, there are a number of lesser-owned options that could prove the difference – getting that third forward choice correct is becoming ever more crucial to our chances of mini-league success.

Yeah..I read up on him a bit...The only positive thing to come out of United this season is the inclusion of young Januzaj...and even that has been a bit enforced...same with Sterling last season at pool...and both were great. I don't know why the English game is so slow off the mark with outstanding young talent.

On the topic of third strikers, Gerard Deulofeu was - incredibly - starting to look like a viable option before his injury. He's back in training now (in Barcelona) and Martinez said he should be back around the end of January. From GW26, Everton have quite a decent stretch of fixtures.

I'll be monitoring, although I'm not sure Everton's form is quite as good as it was back then.

Wouldn't normally entertain tripling up on a team, but I want shot of Ozil and I'm thinking Yaya. Does he sit well in this team or am I better off downgrading Ozil and upgrading JRod? Can only afford him while he's at this price, as have 0.1 in the bank.

    M & M
    Kosc / Coleman / Gabbi / Chester / Whittaker
Hazard / OZIL or YAYA / Silva / Eriksen / Livermore
    Suarez / Aguero / JRod

    Right, second wildcard drafts...

    Szczesny (Boruc)
    Koscielny, Ward, Azpilicueta (Mariappa, B.Turner)
    Navas, Hazard, Cabaye, AJ (Noone)
    Suarez Adebayor Aguero

Midfield is a bit kneejerky, but I wanted Cabaye anyway, and AJ has nice fixtures to come and would also mean you've got one of him and Cabaye at home each week.

Not sure if Hazard is worth the expenditure, or if Eriksen might be a good 'downgrade' in order to splurge on defence a bit.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

Nice first team, maybe a bit light in the bench, especially with double palace and a rotation worry (Turner). Obviously you need to pay attention to the development of the Cabaye > PSG news.

Can't help wondering if you'll end up plundering your expensive keepers down the line when you need a bit more cash in midfield though.

Yeah that may well happen... was going to go Adrian and Mannone, as seems to be the fashion, but I just don't see many clean sheets for either. Particularly Adrian.

Was thinking about Alex Bruce in for Mariappa actually, but the Hull backline has a worrying tendency to shift a bit and I've not really kept track of how much of that is due to injuries. See also Ryan Bennett at Norwich, Chambers at Southampton.

Not sure about the Navas take here. His home scoring is quite a bit more impressive than on the road, but it was that way for most of the City attackers as well before the past month or so. The sample size looks too small to me to say he has a deficiency on the road. Looks like two starts and a bunch of sub appearances.

If Mutch is going to be bench fodder, I'd just get Noone instead, extra 0.3 for these hard economic times is worth it.

it seems the 3rd choice striker has to be adebayor.
bony and benteke could be good picks, but with shelvey and agbonlahor both limping out their last games,i`ll hold off on either big man, even if I had my wildcard.

got rid of eriksen for cabaye and kept Oscar who is ever so close to making way for Johnson......with united in the capital one cup and a fa cup game to come, taking a bounce on Johnson might be too much of a risk now, right?

    my squad
    mannone davis
    coleman terry g.johnson ward b.turner
yaya cazorla Oscar meyler eriksen who has now become cabaye
    rodriguez aguero suarez

got 72pts this week, with coleman still to play,66 with lukaku and not aguero last week.....how do you guys rate my squad going forward?

every week I want to ship Johnson and I still held on to him during my wildcard reshuffle, total madness....when I do ship him,it will be a downgrade for funds, was going to do chester, but he is a doubt,so I shipped eriksen to cabaye to get the price rise.

I might just drop cazorla, for the funds to lallana and upgrade rodriguez to adebayor, but just ideas right now......glen Johnson might just be rotated for now with ward and turner, not willing to take a bounce for city or arsenal defense with their fixtures over the next three.
feeling stupid now dropping ward for gj last Friday, missed out on 5 extra points.

I think Sturridge loves Suarez's challenge. It looks like he always wants to outscore Suarez and sometimes he did like last week. Earlier too when Suarez came back from suspension, Sturridge got 28 pionts from the first three games compared to Suarez's 29 until Suarez got that 17-point haul against wba, and then Sturridge got injured.

      so downgrade suarez to sturridge?
to be honest, the idea crossed my thinking, then I saw I`ll only get 12.1 for suarez,so keep him.
now sturridge has 18points to suarez 18pts,since the change was thought of

A cautionary tale to the would be WC user and a prediction for Lukaku tonight.
I played the Jan WC leading into this GW and here are some of my monumental cock ups

    Out: Ade, Lukaku, Cabaye, Cazorla
    In: Lallana, Sturridge, Giroud, Erikson

Aside from Sturridge and Erikson actually getting some points up, if I had left my team be I would have had 15,??,15,15 rather than 2,9,2,6

I therefore predict Lukaku will score at least 2 goals tonight to turn the knife on my impatience! Still got my other WC so might go back to my original team 🙂 Arrrghgh

Very much agree with you - Was contemplating him instead of keeping Terry in my WC before yesterday's game, Sod's law...

Considering the line ups in the Champion League games as well, it seems Mourinho does favour Cahill, and I'm sure his most recent performance strengthens his case, but it's hard to call.

With sturridge back he will surely eat into suarez points, Is the best way to actually move up the ranking's by not captaining suarez? High risk high reward I guess as if he fails and your captain does well it will be a big swing.

Obv it will be a big swing either ways, just too risky to do it every week. You might get it right once in a while but if you get it wrong it could all be gone in one week.

Arsene Wenger-"Lukas will get games, he looks sharp now after a long time out with an injury. When he comes on he gives us something extra. First of all he occupies the flank well, and his left foot is intelligent and dangerous. Lukas can play up front too because, if you give him one chance, he will score."

Why is Gerrard a wise, studied pick and Yaya a casual one, exactly? One is looking a step too slow and scores on generous penalty calls, while the other is the engine of the highest scoring team in the league. What am I missing?

It is illogical, and a mantra people are using to convince themselves that Yaya's scoring will stop and they will then look clever and that they "called it".......if we all wait long enough, this will surely happen, but by then it could be GW 37 and Yaya will more than likely be several more goals and assists better off.

I know which camp I am currently happier being in.

I'm struggling with my third striker. Played my wildcard ahead of this GW, and went for Giroud. Now I'm seriously thinking about an early transfer to Adebayor, Eto'o or even Benteke. What to do, when the rest of my team looks like this?

    Mannone, Davis
    Kolarov, Koscielny, Kolarov, Gabbidon, Chester
