As the dust settles on another weekend’s action, we take a moment to consider the lessons learned over the nine matches played out so far:

Özil’s Appeal is on the wane…
His first five appearances in the Premier League brought two goals and four assists – 39 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) terms – and sparked huge Fantasy interest, but Mesut Özil’s explosive introduction seems a distant memory right now. Another blank against Fulham compounds a run of performances which harvested a single assist in the last five as the German’s owners begin to reassess his value. Already, over 32,000 FPL managers have sold the Arsenal playmaker since the weekend, with many drafting in a cheaper option in order to facilitate Sergio Aguero’s acquisition up front. Yes, he may have five sets of double figures this season and is capable of explosive hauls but a real lack of consistency has seen him blank in nine of 17 appearances now. With Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere offering Arsenal alternatives across the price brackets and Aaron Ramsey hopeful of a return for the Gameweek 23 trip to Southampton, Özil looks suddenly expendable.

Adam Johnson may just save Sunderland and earn himself a summer in Brazil…
In a game where his side’s proverbial ship looked to be sinking, the mercurial winger grasped the helm to steer Sunderland from dangerous waters and rescue a morale-boosting point. Perhaps inspired by his manager’s midweek comments (highlighted in last week’s ‘Say What’), Johnson’s assist and game-saving strike took his tally to four goals and a couple of assists in the last two appearances, or 35 FPL points to you and me. As Gus Poyet’s side look for inspiration and Roy Hodgson seeks an alternative to Theo Walcott on the England right, the 6.5-priced Johnson’s exploits bring him onto the Fantasy radar ahead of three encouraging fixtures (STO, new, HUL) for the Wearsiders. With wildcards in play, expect his stock to rise.

Trust Tony. New side, old system…
Having spent 10 years at Stoke forging one of the Premier League’s meanest defences, Tony Pulis knows a thing or two about clean sheets. Since taking over as Ian Holloway’s successor, the new Palace boss has helped his side deliver a Fantasy-friendly four shut-outs in 10 league matches as his philosophy of hard work and iron discipline has steered the Eagles out of the relegation zone. Palace have now kept out their visitors in three of Pulis’ five home games in charge, and with the likes of Joel Ward, at 4.2, delivering 3.9 points per game under the new manager, Pulis’ arrival at Selhurst Park has made freeing up budget at the back that little bit easier.

Navas can flourish to offer a City midfield differential…
City’s FPL options are looking very healthy indeed. Yaya Toure ended Saturday as the league’s top-performing midfielder, while David Silva furthered his case as a premium investment option with another assist against Cardiff. Between the lines, Jesus Navas is building a portfolio of his own. In securing City’s second, Navas furthered an astonishing home record – the Spaniard has now returned points in seven of his last eight appearances at the Etihad for Manuel Pellegrini’s free-scoring side. The downside is that Navas has scored just a single goal on the road all season but, with Samir Nasri laid up for a couple of months, he has the chance to better his away day woes with a series of regular starts and offer us a tempting City alternative to the premium-priced Toure and Silva.

Pellegrini isn’t likely to freeze Dzeko out just yet…
Much of the pre-match ramblings centred on the “will he, won’t he” over Sergio Aguero’s anticipated return. Despite being handed just half an hour off the bench, the Argentine didn’t disappoint with a goal and assist against the Bluebirds, ensuring the weekend bandwagon picked up in pace. Alvaro Negredo’s owners will be a little worried by Saturday’s turn of events, though. Manuel Pellegrini chose to reward Edin Dzeko with the full 90 minutes and hauled the Spaniard off for Aguero instead – with the Bosnian’s strike taking his tally to nine goals in the last 10 across all competitions, it seems Pellegrini will surely continue to reward the 6.7-man with game time as he battles for silverware on four fronts.

Benteke is back on track…
For a long while, Christian Benteke had cut a frustrated figure in an Aston Villa jersey. The big Belgian’s goalscoring drought stretching back to Gameweek 5, when a hip injury forced him off early on at Norwich, with his FPL price plummeting from 9.3 to 8.7. But with two goals in two games – against sides with title ambitions – the bruising Benteke appears to have rediscovered his swagger. It remains to be seen whether he can reach the heights that produced 14 goals from January 1 onwards last season, but with a strong run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks (WBA, eve, WHM, car, new, NOR) and his self-belief on the up, the Villain could be setting off on another bountiful run.

Swansea are in free-fall…
A home defeat at the hands of Tottenham puts the Welsh club joint bottom of the league’s form table with one point from six games. With key first-team players such as Michu, Michel Vorm and Pablo Hernandez stuck in the treatment room and an ever-increasing injury list that saw back-up centre-half Jordi Amat taking his place in central midfield yesterday, Michael Laudrup has it all to do. The Swans sit just three points off the bottom now and have managed a single clean sheet in 13 – although the fixtures now fall in their favour (FUL, whu, CAR, stk), investing in the Laudrup’s side looks risky business right now, with only Wilfried Bony showing any sign of promise amidst their current slump.

The battle for the third striker spot is heating up…
With Luis Suarez an undisputed essential and Aguero’s bandwagon approaching full speed, the third forward slot looks our one chance for a differential as the template starts to narrow up top. Benteke and Bony threw their names into the hat at the weekend, whilst Daniel Sturridge has now registered 18 points in his last two appearances since returning from injury. Tim Sherwood’s decision to move to 4-2-3-1 and field Emmanuel Adebayor boosted the Spurs forward’s prospects yesterday afternoon – a brace and maximum bonus took his tally to 49 points in six appearances under the new manager. Fernando Torres’ knee injury lessens the options at Stamford Bridge and the 0.6%-owned Samuel Eto’o is the very definition of a differential, with a hat-trick against United highlighting his eye for goal. With more popular picks such as Olivier Giroud and Romelu Lukaku misfiring, there are a number of lesser-owned options that could prove the difference – getting that third forward choice correct is becoming ever more crucial to our chances of mini-league success.

Captaincy theory question: I have two unbenchable defenders going against two unbenchable forwards in the derby next gw. While I would love the narrative of a high scoring match and attacking returns from all of Coleman Baines Sturridge and Suarez, the odds tell me my ceiling for those four combined is low.

Is captaining Hazard a good call as I can increase my team's point ceiling, or is Suarez a better move as I will hedge my bets and lessen the sting of the lost CS for Baines and Coleman?

    Thanks.

This is the problem of having double defence. I would still keep that armband tatooed to Suarez and play for attacking returns from the Evertonian

Always captain Suarez. You're looking for attacking returns from Coleman and Baines anyway - a double CS would be a bonus.

That is his point, a double clean sheet wouldn't be a bonus if he captained Suarez, as it would mean he blanked and effectively diminish the positive impact of a double clean sheet.

For me if he's looking to maximise the ceiling he should Captain Suarez and bench Coleman.

Nah, a captain fail's captain fail - you might as well insure it because you're not hoping for CS from Baines & Coleman, you're hoping for free kicks, assists and 25-yard screamers.

Simple is the way to go, to be sure. Suarez and his tepid returns of late, plus Sturridge as a cushion if Liverpool runs riot, are complicating things. Glad I can get some distance before I choose.

I guess what I'm saying here is pretend you didn't have Suarez...
Would you start Baines & Coleman away to Liverpool vs. the other defenders you can choose?

On the flip side, if you didn't have Everton defenders would you still give Suarez the arm band in this situation?

Who's in your side shouldn't change who you pick to play each week.

Probably have the same problem but I can't see any alternative to playing all four. The CS would compensate partially for a captain fail but you won't suffer too much against a lot of teams. As it is, I can't see a CS either.

Don't loose sight of the goal of the game. The goal is to maximize points not maximize potential points. Often the two are compatible but not always. Sometimes maximizing potential is counter productive as you are also maximizing negative potential or reaching for a low odds ceiling at the expense of mathematically much more likely middle ground. Over time maximizing points will usually win out over maximizing potential. It's the math.

Thanks for all the replies. Fortunately, I have some time to think about this one but assuming goals in the derby and the fact that Coleman and Baines are in my squad for attacking returns, they'll all play. Hazard v Suarez will be the tougher call.

you should deffo captain Suarez, Hazard has shown he is not a great captain choice as he is not getting points every game.

You should not play both baines and coleman, it was awful planning to wildcard and pick all those players who you knew woud play in this game, Hudson is a bad 5th defender as he has not started a run of games, so not sure how he ended in your team when you have just used your wildcard, too risky.

3 city players, 2 arsenal, 2 everton, 2 liverpool is a bad strategy in my eyes, as you are not spreading your players enough, i would reccomend changing this approach asap.

but that us just my opinion.

Yaya imo. Poted the below earlier...

Is it possible that Yaya is just better at shooting than Silva? Beyond where the shots come from and whether they're on target, the numbers don't reflect that.

Combining better technical shooting ability with how Yaya ends up with those chances - usually with direct running, with or without the ball, from deep at tremendous pace, i.e. with the defence on the back foot (and therefore not as well placed to defend) - means that again, numbers don't paint the whole picture.

It pays to know a bit about football beyond the stats when picking your FF team - Yaya is proof of that imo.

    De Gea (Bunn)
    Baines Fonte Vlaar (Collins Ward)
    Silva Hazard Lallana Johnson (Noone)
    Aguero Suarez Sturridge

I bit different in defense but I dont fancy too many Arsenal cleanies in the next four. Will asses after that. De Gea will become Ruddy in a couple weeks

I'm in exactly the same position. Leader is around 25 points clear of me with a massive team value and both his wildcards in hand.
Tea looks alright. Maybe Lallana in place of Ramsey until he's fully fit. I would also suggest Bony as a differential. Much better fixtures than Adebayor.

I like it, but find the huge risk of doubling Coleman/Baines .. well .. risky. I know they're both attacking threats but against a well oiled Pool attacking front, return of Sturridge .. I can't see Pool NOT scoring, so you're relying on attacking threats. I'd bench one of the too (i'm sure most managers in your ML will have Coleman so play him, never know), and I'd get Januzaj on the team sheet.

I think it's a risk. Even if he does play, surely he'll lack match fitness, Wenger won't throw him out there just like that. He'll get the odd 30mn if they're winning imo. In the same price bracket, you have Cabaye or Eriksen I believe.

    Here's a thought:
Why can't the points scored by a player be equal to his BPS? I mean why use BPS only to determine bonus points. Why not use it to determine the total points scored? It does incorporate the basic elements like goals, assists and clean sheets and through passes could also reward CDM's who might otherwise not make it into any of our fantasy squads.

I like the idea. I believe that's basically how the Metro game works and connoisseurs of Fantasy games seem to prefer it. But it makes for a less explosive scoring system and one that is less immediately understandable to 'casual players'.

FPL is meant for the widest audience possible and that means being as simple as possible.

But this system also rewards goals, assists, cleansheets etc and also has added elements like key passes. Might make someone like a Michael Carrick a fantasy option.

I think that's the problem. When goals and assists aren't immediately rewarded at the surface of the point scoring, it's harder to grasp which players will do well. It raises the prospect of someone like Carrick potentially outscoring a goalscorer if they make enough passes and tackles, which can't really happen under normal circumstances in FPL. Again, that makes it harder to grasp who is doing well and what things to be happy about when you're watching the games. Simplicity is key for a mass audience.

I personally like the idea of it, I'm just pointing out why they probably don't do it in FPL.

Whittaker isn't nailed on leaving you with a rotation of Hul* & CPL.
*Chester is set to miss 3/6 weeks with his hamstring

Gerrard is playing too deep imo. I don't think we can rely on a PK goal most weeks.

I like Lallana as South's have a much nicer run of fixtures over the upcoming 4/5 GWs.

Chester to Rosenior then. Hopefully can do Whittaker to Collins if I catch two double risers. Gerrard also takes set pieces and seems to ft points every week regardless of where he plays, even if it's not pretty - he's done it year after year. Think I will keep Lallana then, thanks

Hey, I bought Chester in a 3.8 so I'm keeping him as my 5th defender as I know he'll get straight back into the side, whenever that is.

However, if Whittaker is your 4th defender, & misses a favourable fixture due to rotation then you may be left having to play Gabbidon.

Also, you're right Gerrard will grind out the points no matter what. That said, I'm just thinking with so many decent priced mid-tier players: Cabaye, Erikson, Lallana, A. Johnson, Mirallas, Oscar, Navas etc... that you could save a buck or two.

So did I but if he is out for a few weeks then his replacement will probably rise and for the sake of 0.1 if rather have someone playing. If I wasn't on WC I would stick with Chester though. I'm not sure how I'd feel about a Lallana Cabaye Eriksen combo as I wanted two heavy hitters, although that could enable Ade to Giroud or maybe Sturridge with a bit of tinkering ...

Both of these scenarios seemed to have happened in recent weeks, but which would you "prefer"

    A) Selling a player only for his replacement to blank and sold player get a haul
    B) Wanting to get a player in but choosing to save the FT / avoid the hit, only for that potential transfer explode

I would hate B and this very happy about bringing in aguero earlier. Scenario A usually is a transfer in betterment of the team...so I'm more inclined to just say "well, feck" but move on.

    Which do you prefer?

I'd prefer A, at least I followed my gut.

Like the old saying, you'll be more disappointed in life for thing you didn't attempt to do rather than the things you do and mess up. Or something like that.

      Much Deep. Wow

So much deep wow but that could go both ways really, now that I think about it. But yea, would rather roll the dice and go for the guy my gut tells me to. If it's a long term move, will be fine with the sold player exploding for one gw.

Just bugs me that I wanted Santi in as a Walcott replacement...but went Ozil since that was the popular pick. Meh.

      b.
Cause A is could be a long term move and could potentially outscore the replacement.

Haha. Yea same, would hate B to happen. Agree that selling a player (unless for a 1 week punt) will usually be for longer term.

Point I'm trying to make is whether I should sell ozil. Gut told me Santi as a Wally replacement but I went with Ozil the safer pick. Now I'm not sure if it's the best idea to chase Santi's points or hold on to Ozil as planned til Palace at least.

Got Santi as a Wally replacement got rid of him this GW and now I'm on WC.
I now hate one week punts. 🙁

So for me if no pressing issues for you I'd stick and go with the plan though don't be shock if Ozil blanks this upcoming GW. Been saying it, he's awful, FPL wise, when he's away..

Yea no other pressing issues so it would really be a "luxury" transfer. Only reason to sell him would be for a punt. For eg if we get need Ox starts GW23, could be worth a punt.

But yea 1 week punts are more likely to hurt. Might end up keeping Ozil and have 2 FTs for gw 24 - mini wildcard if you will.

although... (Oh you might hate me on this one)
It's Crystal Pulis coming to the Emirates. Not so sure if the could be a rock away but memories of the 1-0 loss at the Etihad still give me some wonders.

Very valid point. Will have a look at the team sheets prior to deadline. Might just go without Arsenal attack altogether!

Whittaker isn't nailed on leaving you with a rotation of Hul & CPL.
(&Chester is set to miss 3/6 weeks)

Gerrard is playing too deep imo. I don't think we can rely on a PK goal most weeks.

I like Lallana as South's have a much nicer run of fixtures over the upcoming 4/5 GWs.
