Seamus Coleman limps out of Everton’s draw at West Brom with a hamstring problem. Kevin Mirallas scores in successive league games for the first time this term, Romelu Lukaku scrambles another lucky assist but fails to net once again, whilst Pepe Mel rolls out a 4-4-2 and picks up a point in his first match in charge of the Baggies:

Coleman Concern for Toffees
Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers alike will be eagerly awaiting injury news after the right-back was withdrawn late on at the Hawthorns due to a hamstring problem. Prior to last night’s match at the Hawthorns, Coleman had played every minute of the season – the top scoring defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he is also the most popular backline option and currently resides in 46% of sides, with Per Mertesacker in second, with an ownership of 30% by comparison. Post-match, Martinez confirmed:

“Seamus felt his hamstring a little bit. We are going to assess him. We are going to be cautious and see what the problem is but it’s not a good sign because Seamus would never want to come off the football pitch. He has been in a terrific moment of form so we will try to get him back on as quick as we can.”

Coleman will now be assessed and, with the Merseyside derby only a week away, will be desperate to retain the Republic of International in his starting line-up. If Coleman is ruled out for the short-term, however, his early adopters face a real dilemma – many acquired him at 5.0 at the start of the season and will be reluctant to sell, given that the current price to purchase has now risen to 6.8.

Mirallas the Toffees Goal Hero
Having found the net in the Toffees’ previous league encounter at home to Norwich, the Belgian was amongst the goals once again last night – the first time this term he has scored in back-to-back Gameweeks. Prior to his visit to the Hawthorns, Mirallas had produced just one assist in 10 away appearances, with almost all of his attacking returns arriving at Goodison – for all the undoubted frustration his acquisition brings, the 7.2-priced midfielder has now racked up five goals and four assists for Roberto Martinez’ team. Amongst midfielders, that brings him into ninth spot in the FPL standings – more than City duo David Silva and Jesus Navas, for example. Whilst his role on the right may be under threat from new boy Aiden McGeady, Mirallas’ eye for goal is still looking crucial for the Merseysiders. He has notched three times over the last seven Gameweeks – a tally matched only by Ross Barkley in the Everton midfield over the course of the entire season.

Lukaku Scoring Woes Continue
Whilst Mirallas’ conversion rate picks up, his compatriot failed to find the net once again. Lukaku’s owners were treated to another somewhat fortuitous assist but his lack of cutting edge in the box shows little sign of improving – last night’s blank means he has scored just once in nine league encounters. In a Gameweek where a number of similarly-priced forwards staked a claim for the coveted third forward slot with impressive displays, Lukaku’s performance may well be the final straw for many Fantasy owners. At present, he is still the second most popular forward in the FPL game but, with the Gameweek 23 deadline a week away and winter wildcards being wielded at pace, he looks set to be sacrificed by many.

Mel Scrapes a Debut Draw
With all of their players owned by less than 3% of FPL managers, the main impact of West Brom’s equaliser – courtesy of stand-in centre-half Diego Lugano – was denying their visitors a tenth clean sheet of the season. As we look for signs of new manager Pepe Mel’s impact and tactical preference, it was intriguing to see the Baggies line up in a 4-4-2 formation, with Nicolas Anelka partnered by Matej Vydra up front – those eyeing up budget option Saido Berahino will be disappointed that the youngster was only utilised as a late sub. Elsewhere, Steven Reid was preferred to Billy Jones at right-back, whilst Mel also handed Chris Brunt and Zoltan Gera the wide roles – Stephane Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano continue to look peripheral figures in the Baggies’ set-up and currently look unlikely to benefit from the change of manager.

Who's the best Goalman replacement? I think any sort of hamstring injury will see him sidelined for a couple of GW's at least

I don't buy into the idea yet that Chelsea have turned a corner defensively. Kiloton remains my favourite replacement despite his blank

I take it you're not a Lukaku owner?!

Doesn't seem obvious to me, and if it was, I'd say it was obviously a Lukaku assist. Just watched it back again and first angle looks like it may have been a knock on by the defender, 2nd and 3rd replay angles definitely show it to come off Lukaku in my opinion, and certainly not in any way lucky or fortuitous.

Don't agree with the article stating he's lost his cutting edge either. He's just not getting the chances anymore due to how Everton are currently playing. Ok, he's missed a couple of headers, but put the ball at his feet in a decent position and he'll bury it. Once Barkley's back (and I think that'll be sooner rather than later), Lukaku'll be banging them in.

Well to start things of I reviewed the players points starting GW20 and may I remind that the 3 forwards was not included, substitutions & captaincy choice was also set aside.

In GW20-21 the total no. of points accumulated for the “Big Defense” was 73pts and on GW 22 it gathered 30pts to a total of 103pts, an average of 34.3ppgw.

While the proposed 3-4-3 for GW20-21 the total no. of points accumulated was 81pts and on GW 22 it gathered a whopping 51pts to a total of 132pts, an average of 44ppgw.

A point difference of 29 points separates the two teams. The average score for the 3 GWs with the 3 forward slots filled, subs were made and captaincy as well is 47ppgw.

The explosiveness of Cabaye and Kolarov helped the 3-4-3 to give a gap although a small sample like this doesn't tell the full story at the end but I still think it would be a bad idea to have a “Big Defense” as some mids shows that they can bring in the points needed.

              *ppgw- points per game week

                Very interesting, thanks GTS.

My take on the finding that big defenders score more in the second half of the season is to stay with a 3-4-3 but have four big defenders, with the fourth one being first sub. Takes a decent team value to do it though.

If I have a defense this week of :

Coleman - Mertesacker - Parr [Chester] [Clyne]

        With Coleman/Chester potentially injured
        Mert Vs Soton
Parr and Clyne potential for not playing

would you take a -4 for Azpil and whom for?

Hi all - i think i'm nearly there on my w/c. If i press the button now (and it means selling Coleman) i can just about afford this:

        Szczesny / Davis
        Baines / Koscielny / Azpilicueta / Kolarov / Ward
        Hazard / Silva / Ramsey / Januzaj / Noone
        Suárez / Agüero / Adebayor

It would mean playing 4 3 3 most weeks.

Any thoughts? Is my midfield too weak?

It's nice. I wouldn't be wanting Azpi and Kol myself. One of them would be enough for me, then use the money to get YaYa instead of Silva.

This is the week after the WC:

        DDG
        Baines, Mert, Ward
        Hazard, Cabaye, Wilshere, Navas
        Aguero, Suarez, Carroll

        Mannone, Pozuelo, Zab, Chester

        All a bit "meh".

i'd be fairly happy. if cabaye stays he is a great pick. navas is a good differential, especially at home. wilshere looks to be gaining consistency. Carroll could be a good pick. DDG is definitely meh though

Was hope that MUN would start to tighten it up at the back. Especially at home to CAR.

Cab may or may not leave. Navas may or may not be rotated. Wilshere may or may not make way for Ramsey (in a formation change, not direct swap).

I have Erikson already but for example, yes. I could get Silva or Cabaye (which I'm not going to get right now obviously).

Just askin' because I'm quiet partial about what to do with Navas myself.

                Good question.

I have a lot tied up in defence (DDG, Zab, Mert, Baines) so any replacement mid would not be a big hitter.

More likely to go for Snoddy.

I guess you still got some money left in your backpocket for Wilshere > Ramsey?

OT but I'm even considering keeping Wilshere for a bit. Folks over here don't advise for that, I know, but Arsenal won every game lately with him playing 90 mins each while contributing. Not sure if Aaron will take his spot immediately.

Snoddy sounds ok, you don't fancy AJ I guess..

        Morning.

I have Coleman, Chester and Clyne (as I'm sure a fair few others do).

        .6 in the bank.

Thinking of Clyne > Evans this week.

Can't be arsed with Clyne if he's not getting starts. Don't understand why he isn't tbh. Looks a better player than Chambers. My guess is the Coleman injury wasn't that serious and so I'll hold onto him.

GW12: Chelsea win 3-0 away to West Ham; Palace win 1-0 away to Hull.
GW23: Going to play both Gabbidon & Ward and captain Hazard in an attempt to make up some points. Will almost certainly end badly.

Ramsey not fit and uncertainties regarding his gametime against southampton, but I can play a defender or noone in case he is not fully ready. What do you think is the best choice?,
