Our last glance at the Gameweek gone by assesses Sunderland’s flying winger and turns our attentions to north London, where Tottenham’s attack and Arsenal’s lack of offensive consistency are threatening to shape our Fantasy plans:

The Player

Having racked up a 22-point haul in the previous Gameweek as Sunderland swept aside fellow strugglers Fulham, Adam Johnson was a man in form ahead of the Wearsiders home clash against Southampton. Midway through the first-half, the Black Cats looked dead and buried after their visitors swept into an early two-goal advantage but the former Man City wide man once again came to the rescue to underline the fact that, if his side are to beat the drop, he’s going to have a significant say in the matter.

As Fantasy managers know, there’s a fine line between chasing last week’s points and snapping up a player in form but, in Johnson’s case, it’s becoming increasingly obvious the latter applies. Currently sitting at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – 0.5 less than his starting price – the wide man’s goal, assist and maximum bonus in Saturday lunchtime’s stalemate took his tally to 35 points in just two appearances.

What seems remarkable is that Johnson had started only one of the previous eight Gameweeks under Gus Poyet – and also found the net on that occasion, too. For whatever reason, he seemed to have drifted onto the periphery but is now firmly established as a key figure on the right of the Black Cats’ front three, with his manager lavishing praise on his recent performances.

Whilst his next four away trips (new, mcy, ars, liv) are a little unappealing, Johnson’s remaining home games more than balance the weight in his favour. With Stoke, Hull, West Brom, Palace, West Ham, Cardiff and Swansea constituting seven of the final eight visitors to the Stadium of Light, Poyet could barely wish for a kinder run of games. Bearing in mind Sunderland have already got the better of City, Chelsea and United in front of their own fans, it seems a near-certainty that Saturday’s exploits won’t be the last time Johnson will be making the Fantasy headlines before the season is out.

The Team

A 3-1 win at Swansea took Tottenham’s record to five wins and a draw under Tim Sherwood as the north London club continue to impress as an attacking force. Both Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen have been paramount to their turnaround in fortunes and, as winter wildcards continue to be wielded, have deservedly earned plenty of interest on the back of a string of consistent performances.

Sherwood’s decision to switch from 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1, with Eriksen tucked in behind the Togo international, didn’t deter the in-form duo last Sunday. Adebayor’s 13-point haul at the Liberty took his tally to 49 points in six (8.2 points per game) since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas and makes a mockery of the Portuguese’s decision to hand him a single sub appearance in the first 16 Gameweeks. Eriksen has earned 42 points (7 ppg) over the same period as Sherwood’s offensive approach allows him to operate with a freedom never afforded under the previous manager.

At 7.8 and 7.3 respectively, it’s hard to overlook such value for money, with the pair also offering a real consistency – Adebayor has returns in five of six, whilst Eriksen has produced the goods four times over the same period. Furthermore, Spurs have now scored 14 times in those six matches under Sherwood – previously, they had produced a paltry 15 in 15 for Villas-Boas.

The signs seem encouraging, then, though the upcoming schedule is perhaps enough to persuade many to either look elsewhere or at least limit their level of immediate investment. Home clashes against City and Everton, with a trip to Hull sandwiched in between, offer Sherwood’s side a stiff test over the short-term as that familiar Fantasy quandary of form against fixtures prepares to collide.

The Talking Point

Whilst the majority of top-flight sides can rely on one or two talents to produce the goods on a near-regular basis, Arsenal, on the other hand, are becoming a real source of Fantasy frustration as the season unfolds. The league leaders have notched 20 fewer goals than City, for example, and whilst the rest of the top four boast consistent performers such as Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure, Eden Hazard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard, the Gunners have shared the points around in recent weeks.

The loss of both Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey has left us hoping Mesut Ozil and/or Olivier Giroud can step up. Neither has delivered with any regularity, though – the German has mustered a single assist in five, whilst Giroud, despite being nailed-on as the lone striker, has netted in just three of his last 16 league appearances.

Luckily for the Gunners, others have improved of late. Jack Wilshere has produced attacking returns in each of his last three now, whilst Santi Cazorla’s 16-point haul against Fulham also highlighted the fact that Arsene Wenger’s side are not solely reliant on one or two individuals to make the difference – indeed, the Arsenal manager has acknowledged this last weekend, going on to say:

“It’s the best thing that can happen to us, because if you depend on one player you think you have to put him in cotton wool to keep him fit. For us to know everyone can score and that someone like Ramsey, who is a goalscorer, is not playing at the moment, and Arteta, who can get us a goal as well but is not playing, that is very positive.”

Ozil’s decline has led to significant sales over the last few days. At 10.1 in FPL, the German’s value has been questioned by many, with his departure from Fantasy squads freeing up the cash to splash on fit-again Sergio Aguero. With Walcott out of the picture until next season, Ramsey’s imminent return is bound to see him return to our squads, though a possible role on the right in Walcott’s absence may well dent the Welshman’s appeal for the run-in. Given that Per Mertesacker, with 106 points, is one behind Giroud and only four off Ozil’s 110, some are eyeing up the prospect of investing in the Gunners backline alone, with their increasingly resilient displays making the Arsenal defence far more effective Fantasy options right now.

@JKI...Don't normally put this table up..but..On the Remy thread, and Doosras comments about Cabaye.. This stat (through balls) always matters (don't ask about the top one..jeez...why oh why is he not in the points)..The more through balls they play the higher their overall potential is from midfield..It just works because it shows the type of player they are and works along with the type of forward they supply..Most of the top mid picks show on this table without looking any further,

positive..Newcastle play to his strengths which is running onto a through ball. Good for Cabaye and good for Remy..Liverpool do the same for Suarez and Arsenal for Giroud (see table)...In short the teams are well set up to play to their strengths..and do it...

4 goals, 8 assists and 15 bonus. Didn't watch the game last weekend but he was pretty close to a goal, right? + Last time he had some games without attacking points he suddenly exploded with 40 points over 4 GW's. Still think he's the best Arsenal attacking player available now with Wally out.

He was close to a goal but as usual he Coutinho'd it. You're right re past performances but he's just been so crap! Tough to hold! I have him and am thinking of dropping him and going without Arsenal attack they don't have any consistent performer goals and returns coming from all over the place. I wish Ozil was priced at 9.0 instead of 10

Also gives you an option of holding someone who gets a knock and may be out for just 1 GW. Hasn't hamstrung me too bad elsewhere in my squad so gonna hang on to him for the time being. Good plan to bring in Azpi, probably better moves for your team overall.

agree with this point exactly. I already have Ozil and honestly, it's a luxury transfer to do Ozil > Santi. Ozil is my only Arsenal attacking asset and to me, he is the best cover. He is class and those saying he had a horrible game probably didn't watch the game and just based it on his blank.

He still had a reasonably solid game, at the center of everything. Caz got 2 goals in 5 minutes, fine. But I still think Ozil runs the game. He could have scored himself, and set up Podolski for a shot against the post. Before this GW, everyone was laughing at the Santi pick. The fact he scored 2 goals doesn't hide the fact that he's inconsistent. Just look at his history. You'd have to hold Santi for the rest of the season to get majority of his points since you won't know when he'll explode (similar to last season).

If Ozil's best scoring chance came to his left foot - goal. If Pod hit that shot centimeters to the right, goal. 1 goal 1 assist 3 baps. 14 points later and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Sorry just had to give my 2 cents worth.

The more I look at it, the more I fancy a Reid/Bardsley rotation on my wildcard over Koscielny (+cheapie). It really is pretty fantastic, and Arsenal's 6 tough fixtures left make it fairly low risk imo. Can always bring in Kosc after that horrific March

If you don't have Mannone it does play out well. Only question is when Reid is supposed to be back and if Hammers will re-find their early season resilience so it carries quite a bit of risk.

I'm going Adrian/Mannone as keepers for this reason

Attacking potential is limited with Reid

Reus has never surpassed Kagawa's number of goals/assists in a Bundesliga season. What makes everyone so sure he is better?

And why would Moyes change his system to fit Reus when he has never done it for Kagawa?

Reus has been pretty consistent over the last 5 seasons, Kagawa really only had one good full season.

As for the second part, I don't think he would. But Reus was always more of a winger than Kagawa is, not sure he could play wide in 442 but maybe like Navas for City.

Not sure Reus would sign for Man U either tbh.

Thought I'd finalised by wildcard. Now with Coleman's potential injury, I have been presented with further conundrums... Here's the latest draft. Would be a big help if anyone could offer me feedback.

    Boruc / K.Davis
    Koscielny / Azpilicueta / Ward / Clyne* / R.Bennett*
    Silva / Hazard / AJohnson / Cabaye / Noone
    Aguero / Adebayor / Suarez

Given my appalling rank I see little point now in getting Yaya, AJohnson is in form with favourable upcoming home games... anyone else I'm missing? This leaves me with 0.1m in the bank.

Chambers appears to have taken first place from Clyne. But they could swap back at any point.

Bardsley makes a lot more sense for that money, especially as you already have Boruc.

Good fallback option there for Coleman once he is confirmed out. Need to find a way to get a more reliable 4th mid than Janu longterm I don't fancy 433. Would downgrade Mert or JT depending on sell value to a cheaper option on their respective team, downgrade Giroud to whatever it takes to upgrade Januzaj to Ramsey or someone in that price range.

Would prefer Ivan of the lot for JT for security of start but not sure if that gives you enough money to upgrade Januzaj. If not would go for Azpil who surely should give you enough money. You still have 4 very good defensive options in the odd case Azpil may get rotated for a game here or there.

No such thing as overkill when it comes to City attackers. The blank is very concerning though and you will have to go 4-4-2 that week and drop one of the mids so make sure you sort your defense out in advance.

    @Wakey

what do you reckon on Carroll?

West Ham play to his strengths as well. But Remy is far more clinical than Carroll and you could argue that you can get decent returns from Nolan once Carroll is back, as Nolan (when he isn't getting sent off) is proven FPL material when he has a Kevin Davies/Andy Carroll type target man to feed off.

        I've seen these before

My point is that Remy and Nolan could be a more profitbale (and cheaper) option than Cabaye and Carroll as Carroll is an unreliable finisher and Cabaye has periods of blanks then comes good.

        Agree or not?

Cabaye and Carroll all day long..Cabaye on kicks, pens, corners, through balls, in the hole nailed on..everything a 9.0 mid should be...Nolan plays well alongside Carroll but it's at the cost to his own FPL points..he's there to set up Carroll. No Nolan then Carroll himself becomes an iffy pick, even when he's fit again. Carroll can be a bit wastefull but just keeps going and eventually they go in...Cabaye and Carroll for me.

I've seen many posters say Utd won't spend big this summer or have a major overhaul but surely there is no option.

With Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Giggs, Macheda, Fabio all out of contract this summer and the likes of Anderson, Young, Buttner, Bebe being sold, that is 10 players there that would need replacing.

Utd need a right back to give competition to Rafael, one maybe two centre backs, one maybe two left backs, a centre midfielder and two creative forwards. Would be good to see Vidic and Evra get new deals so changes aren't too radical.

    Realistic options:

RB - De Sciglio or Montoya (Out of contract in summer)

    CB - Garay/Mangala/Howedes

    LB - Shaw(but i think he's Chelseas) so Coentrao

    CM - Cabaye/Gundogan/Marchisio

WF - Lallana and Mata(If reports are to be believed)

if we play mata and lallana out of position as wide forwards or wingers then what is the point?

they wouldn't be widemen, mata, lallana and rooney would be fowards in the final third who can pick up the ball anywhere and supply van persie, more fluidity, no more rigid 442.

He was in mine until today. Think I'm looking elsewhere for now. Need to see more from Villa first

Just did Coleman to Terry and have doubled up on the Chelski defense.

Anyone else you can drop? Lallana's big hauls usually come at home, but Palace are tight as a drum and Ward is OOP in centre mid, and had a couple of chances last GW.

I've been stuck and only had one reply to a few posts over the last few days, any advice much appreciated.

    a) Adebayor OR b) Sturridge -> Aguero

    a) Would require Ozil -> Januzaj OR Ozil + Coleman -> Rambo + Azpi (-4)
    b) Would require Ozil -> Rambo.

    2ft. What should I do?

I did Ade to Aguero last week and brought Sturridge in for Jrod too.
Ozil I know he can be explosive but it's weeks apart.
I would do b) but Ozil to Wilshere instead and maybe upgrade to rambo after he starts and form is back

Thanks Shanks, Your insight is much appreciated and it makes sense to avoid a hit too. Good luck with your own choices 🙂

    a) Kompany (1st def with Kosc and Azpi behind) and Lallana (giving 3 mid priced midfielders out of 4)
    b) Collins (3rd def) and Silva (2nd mid)

      a) I fancy Lallana to equal Silva for a while

I'm thinking that Navas will match Silva close enough so if you do b) you could upgrade 3rd defender with Navas....?
Still a) looks like the better choice overall
