We have a new name on the Fantasy Football Scout Cup, as sponsored by Paddy Power, after the final was played out over Gameweek 24. Congratulations go to Tdubb05, who, in a tightly-contested affair, triumphed over Ajax by a score of 59-52 scoreline and now succeeds Wild Rover as the eighth Fantasy manager to hold the trophy:

Both managers had three of the same four midfielders – Juan Mata, Yaya Toure and Eden Hazard – and also handed Luis Suarez the armband for Liverpool’s trip to West Brom. Up top, Ajax made the bold decision to hold onto Sergio Aguero but suffered when all three of his bench players failed to manage a single minute between them, whereas Tdubbo5 had Daniel Sturridge alongside his Merseyside team-mate for the Hawthorns encounter.

Our new champion had his defence to thank for securing victory, though – despite taking a four-point hit, his keeper and back three chipped in with a combined 23 points, with Ajax’s backline returning 16 points by comparison. Tdubb05 picks up £100 worth of free bets with Paddy Power and also receives a £100 Amazon Voucher, whilst Ajax can console himself with £50 worth of free Paddy bets and a £50 Amazon Voucher.

In the play-off for third spot, Cunny Funts emerged triumphant over Tal by a score of 40-35. Both benefitted from an Arsenal clean sheet against Palace and Suarez’ eight-point captaincy haul, though Cunny Funts edged it thanks to an assist apiece from Gunners duo Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud. By finishing in third place, he earns £50 free bets from Paddy and a £25 Amazon Voucher.

Tdubb05 won’t have much time to revel in his victory, though, as we’re planning to roll out the next instalment of the Fantasy Football Scout Cup in the upcoming week or so. Keep an eye open for details on how to enter.

FPL rules- These are the basic rules good FPL managers live by. Some will point to spots where this or that were wrong but over the season you'll be better off if you abide by them.

    1) NEVER EVER (C) a goalkeeper. I didn't think this had to be said but reading this site over the last 24 hours has opened my eyes.

    2) Don't take hits for defenders if you can field 3. The temptation to break this rule happens quite often and occasionally would show a points profit but on the whole its a losing play. Basic math will show why and I'm sure most of you are smart enough to do it.

    3) Outside of DGWs you should never (C) a defender. Their points potential is always gonna be lower than the best outfield players so make the smart move.

    4) Don't take hits lightly. Over the season I'd say you should prob take no more then 6 hits and even that is alot. I see people often taking hits to bring in like for like players and then complain when the cut player starts doing well. Patience is a key part of this game.

    5) Don't plan more than 2-3 weeks in advance. Things change pretty quickly in this game and it just ends up being a giant waste of time.

    6) Use the tools available to you before asking basic questions. Read the tweets and look at the C poll. Try thinking for yourself and run your own team. I see alot of people basically asking others to run their teams which seems like no fun.

    7) Try to watch football. The more you watch the better you understand this game and that can only help you as an FPL manager.

    8) Have ambition. At the start of the season I saw a bunch of questions about season goals etc and almost no one said their goal was to finish 1st in FPL. I saw a bunch of top 10k, top 50k...... answers and thats just not good enough. Why play if you don't even wanna win?

    9) Don't be a what if/I almost brought him in manager. The facts are you didn't so just let it go. As long as you made the most logical decision based on the available info then be happy with the process and try as much as you can to ignore the results. If you keep doing the right things for the right resons then the results will come. We're human so we'll always complain but try...

There will be more than 6 players injured from your original squad over a season-injured players score nil and bought in players score points so I don't totally agree with your logic(I was kidding re per gw).

and how much have i gained from the players bought in??......

you see this is the fallacy of hit taking, people see it as 'your current score' + 'number of hits' = 'what you would have got'

which = bollox, imagine i took all of the 24 points in one week just to get suarez in when he returned...... even in one week, let alone over the whole season would have paid that back in spades................

what if someone was injured as tommy mentions above, what if its a plum fixture where its a calculated risk (which is at the end of the day what hits are) eg suarez v anyone ........ yes you could wait but youd be beratin yourself for not taking a reasonable gamble and missing out

wild knee jerking hit taking isnt the same as well thought out or longer term hit taking

the number of hits is irrelevant, its the net points that matter........

which is very hard to estimate, especially over a season, as you say this must also take into account points of the cut people while theyre out of your team...............v complex business and thus cant simply be reduced to dont take hits or only take X hits etc

I've heard other using 12 hits as a rough guide and I think that's about right, ie every third week or so.
DGWs, injuries and dramatic changes in fixtures and form make some hits definetly worth while, but as you cannot predict how many of each of these are necessary you cannot just pick a number out of thin air and make it definitive.

As most have now wielded their second wildcard card the effect of price rises allowing a better squad is diminished. Now is the time for points not team value.

                No it doesn't I suppose...

Does you saying it? No it doesn't either.

Ive made bad moves n bad hits to a certain extent discipline is a necessary quality but I've seen players hold injured players through thick and thin through a mixture of value and fear to take a hit. Poor play in its own right I suppose.

aye. you should always try and play your bench if you can, as thats the point of it, but sometimes either through multiple injuries or a fixture you just cant ignore.... a hit is worth its weight in gold

Using extream examples doesn't really prove me wrong. Players get injured and we take them out. We have 2 W/C, bench players and some hits to fix those problems. I never said don't take any hits. The whole point was to play smart and don't take them when they are not necessary.

I did. Partly to beat the most recent price rise, plus I plan on having him for a while, so the 4 points bothered me none. It's an investment. All investments require that you put something in to get something out. Plus, he's due a goal soon, at least that's what I feel. I don't buy the never take a hit on a defender. If he does score and have a cleanie, that's double figures that I would've missed out on. That is why some people take hits. Anticipation for some greater returns. It's risk vs. reward, and sometimes that is the best way to move forward in Fantasyland.

I agree with a lot of these points. However, the points hit one is something that people often get wrong.

By the end of the season it is statistically more likely that the person winning FPL (and most of the others near the top) will have less transfers than others lower down. This is because they achieved closer to the ideal points maximum AND took less transfers.

Basically its no good not taking no hits if your team is a long way removed from the ideal and you subsequently score poorly. In such situations it is usually best to take at least 1 hit to get your team closer to the 'ideal'

Hear! Hear! Yes, the evidence shows the top players taking less hits, but that's because they don't need to...doesn't mean it's the 'secret' to their success. It means they've been fortunate enough to have a good team each week to run out.

I guess this has been recieved very badly. This was ment as a general rule to help those who I feel take sub-optimum hits on a consistant bases. I know hits can and do work if used well but it shouldn't be something done too often was the main point. We also have 2 W/C over the season to help but ur right about the reason the top guys tend to have less hits.

If I was teach someone to play poker I would tell them to play tight and only play really good hands. As their understanding of the game improves and they become better at making reads they can expand their game and play more hands to take advantage of the skill edge they have gained. I would tell someone who doesn't understand the game well to play a very loose style as they will opten put themselves in bad spots and more often that the tight player. Hope this makes sense to you.

Causation or correlation -- if you have made the right moves you don't need to take hits, but that is because you already have the right players, not because you didn't take a hit.

There is a big difference between a bad move and the wrong move, and oftentimes a hit can help you extricate yourself from the consequences.

      8) Seriously?
You think a realistic ambition for more than a few players is to finish 1st?
Over a 1 in three million shot if all things were equal?
My target was top 10k, realistic because I generally finish just outside of it.
Obviously I would love to be number 1 but it's incredibly unlikely to happen.
Lets set realistic goals, I'm currently in the the top 5k and I'm really pleased.
If I'd set my target as number 1 I'd still be doing badly by your standards.
You've said in previous replies about your ridiculous cap of 6 hits a season that you are aiming this at new or beginner players so why, in the same post, would you imply that they could win the whole thing?

Because in any given season anyone can win FPL. Even beginners have a shot if they learn quick and make good decisions. Setting realistic goals is fine but why would you as a member who uses all the stats on this site not have a shot at winning FPL?

I think the hit for a defender rule changed this year...

e.g. say you had two injured defenders and had say Gabbidon vs Arsenal nailed for 1pt a hit for an injured defender with cs potential this year means more chance of bonus surely a greater short term upside plus you've lost the injured defender for the mid to long term.

This really is a coin toss. On the one hand you have a penalty taker who is assured 90 minutes, but then there's the temptation to pick Zaha who, let's remember, hasn't played much this season, for flair reasons. Play it safe and go with Jason.

Stay true to the Zaha/Punch rotation. Disobeying the holy rotation may upset the FPL gods who created it in their glory.

Yeah Lallana is top of my watch list, the only thing putting me off is I've got to lose a big mid (Ozil in this case) and I'm scared they'll score big once I've jumped

Hi Folks, what would you recommend to this team?

    Mannone (adrian)
    mert kolorav evans (vlaar bruce)
    cazorla mata hazard AJ (barkley)
    suarez Rvp Jrod

    Main issues:
    - the defense with evans/vlaar/bruce/kolorav who all may not start 🙁
    - lambert's return makes jrod less appealing
    - cazorla as tough fixtures
    - lack of attacking city coverage.....So

    A: evans >> shaw/chico
    B: evans + cazorla >> shaw/azpi + silva/navas (-4)
    C: evans + cazorla >> ward + yaya (-4)
    D; cazorla >> silva....assuming i get news that evans/vlaar may feature
    E: evans + jrod >> shaw + dzeko (-4)

Having 3 playing defenders should be your priority, so A out of your list (Shaw)

yeah the def is the main priority....so the hit portion would be to get some city attacking coverage for the next three gw's...dont mind taking a hit as its a 3 gw move...i already have my transfer planned for next gw involving removal of AJ

A: Shaw to address the main concern. Cazorla might capitalize against a lackluster Pool defense, although phasing him out in the near future is a good idea.

Best replacement for Evans? Currently have Sagna - Azpi - Evans - Chambers - Bruce with Mannone/Adrian.

    Thanks for any advice 🙂

Fonte. Chambers' spot is not guaranteed and the Saints have great fixtures coming up. Alternatively, you could pick Yoshida for the short term (nailed until Lovren returns)or if you're 0.2 short of Fonte.

Here is some alternative fpl advice:

1 - never buy HBA or taarbat. It's the same player actually and he will always disappoint.
2 - if moyes says someone is likely not to play - captain him - he is playing for sure.
3 - if you ever feel the urge to post "when I asked you about this player you all said no and now he scored a brace - I should always listen to my gut" - ban yourself please. We had enough.
    4 - no, you can't captain Baines.
5 - if you have cheap defenders, don't complain when they fail to get a clean sheet.
6 - there is no good answer for the question "yaya or silva?" Flip a coin.
7 - Denzel is god. Manone is his deputy.
8 - even Evs makes mistakes. Granted, the last one was in May 2011 but stil. Don't beat yourself up - move on.
9 - don't confuse real life with fpl - ozil is a great player and giroud is a donkey - and lukaku does not have so many assists in real life.
10 - selfish players are great for fpl - mirallas sturidge etc.
11 - get a life. It helps to deal with a bad game week.
12 - if you shower and have a feeling someone is watching you from the bathroom window don't be alarmed - it's just RONH.
