As we brace ourselves for a weekend of FA Cup action, we’ve time to take stock and assess the lessons learned over Tuesday and Wednesday’s eight fixtures:

Sherwood Has His Own Agenda
Having kicked off his tenure at Tottenham with a 4-4-2, Tim Sherwood has gradually settled on a lone striker system as his preferred formation. As the weeks go by and the treatment room empties, he continues to fine tune his preferred first XI – last night saw Christian Eriksen drop out of the starting line-up for the first time since the new manager arrived, whilst Michael Dawson – who had previously played every minute of the season – joined the Dane on the bench as Younes Kaboul partnered Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the back-four. Emmanuel Adebayor’s goals seem one of the few guarantees at the Lane right now as Sherwood shows he’s not afraid to shirk big decisions and mix things up in his pursuit of a top four finish.

Sturridge is a Genuine Captaincy Option
In spite of his superb consistency, Daniel Sturridge’s first few months failed to convince us of his explosive Fantasy qualities. His first 12 appearances – five without Luis Suarez, seven with the Uruguayan – delivered just two scores of nine or more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, highlighting his lack of captaincy credentials at a time when his fellow forward ran riot upon his return from suspension. Now, it seems, the tables have turned. Since his comeback from injury, Sturridge has beaten Suarez’ hauls in four of their five starts together ans produced nine or more points in all but one of those matches. Not so long back, many felt doubling up on the duo was overkill – not only have Sturridge’s displays put that argument to rest, they have shown that, when it comes to our armband decisions, he has to be taken seriously.

Vlaar the Key to Villa’s Survival
The Dutchman’s return against Cardiff helped his side to a first clean sheet since Gameweek 20 and their seventh of the season. Vlaar has missed six games through hamstring problems in recent weeks and it’s telling that Paul Lambert’s side have failed to register a single shut-out in his absence, averaging 1.8 goals against without their captain, compared to 1.3 with him in the XI. The Midlands side sit just four points clear of the drop zone and, if Lambert is to steer them to safety, Vlaar’s presence at the back looks vital.

Solskjaer’s Still Tinkering
A shift from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2, with Kenwyne Jones joined by Fraizer Campbell up top, made little difference to Cardiff’s faltering form as they failed to score for the fourth time in six under their new manager. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not only omitted Peter Whittingham from the starting XI for the first time this term, he dropped the midfielder out of the squad altogether, whilst Kim Bo-Kyung – who had started against Swansea in the previous match – was also given the night off, despite Craig Bellamy’s suspension. The Norwegian still seems far from certain of his most efficient side and, despite some kind upcoming home games, his erratic selection policy is likely to keep Fantasy managers away.

Reid Isn’t Guaranteed Game Time
It was widely assumed that the Kiwi international would make an immediate return for the Hammers once fully recovered from an ankle problem. Reid had played very minute of the first 10 Gameweeks before sustaining the injury but, despite his return to fitness, has found himself behind James Collins and James Tomkins in the pecking order. With five clean sheets in the last six, we can hardly blame Big Sam for sticking with his current central defensive pairing – Collins’ goal against Norwich merely strengthened his case to continue as a regular, offering Fantasy managers a cut-price option at just 4.1 in FPL.

Moyes Doesn’t Know What To Do with Mata
Four games into his United career and Juan Mata has already started in three different positions under David Moyes. Handed his debut in “the hole” behind Robin van Persie, the Spaniard was shifted over to the right in the next two as Wayne Rooney was brought back into the starting XI – last night, he was moved to the left flank as Moyes drafted in Antonio Valencia on the right. With the Red Devils boss still seemingly nowhere nearer establishing a settled side, Mata’s arrival seems to have given Moyes more questions than answers – whilst the big-money move from Chelsea has boosted his game time, a move to his preferred central role may be out of Mata’s reach.

Swans Need Hernandez’ Creativity
Injuries have severely hampered the Spaniard’s game time this term, with ongoing hamstring problems limiting Hernandez to just 11 starts for Swansea. Handed a starting berth at Stoke last night after emerging from the bench to produce a pair of assists against Cardiff last Saturday, the former Valencia man teed up Chico Flores’ goal as the visitors scrapped for a draw at the Britannia. Despite his limited number of minutes, Hernandez has now registered six assists – two more than any Swansea player – and, with Michu still failing to find a way out of the treatment room, keeping his compatriot fit could be the difference between survival and a drop to the Championship for the Welsh outfit.

I really don't know where to go next with my team. A very poor week for me this week has made me feel unconfident about my players. Any suggestions? (I know, wait until after FA games)

    Boruc (Mannone)
    Azpil, Sagna, Demel (Bruce, Ward)
    Cazorla, Mirallas, Mata, Hazard (Noone)
    RvP, Suarez, Lambert.

I wouldn't be swayed by his %, I would hazard a guess that a large chunk of that is people with low TV's who decided to downgrade from Suarez and that only a small portion actually have S&S

Similarly feeling a strong lack of confidence in my team - though i know it was caused by blanks. Very jittery at the moment.

But I do think that's a good team - though I would really get rid of RVP. For Sturridge or Adebayor of course.

Feels a bit wrong getting rid of RvP before they play Crystal Palace! But I suppose it makes sense given how crap Utd are and Palace's good defensive form. Cheers

Yeah...feels very wrong but United and RVP really haven't been impressive. And Palace will be tight. The last time I wildcarded RVP in just for Crystal Palace at home (pre Pulis mind), 1-0 from an RVP penalty. Team balance was destroyed and suffered for many weeks thereafter.

I must admit, it's a weird time as an FPL player. It's not often that between gameweeks we are best off NOT making transfers for a while. We are so used to having a bad gameweek, turning to this site for help and then getting in players that will make it all ok again.

But I must be missing something.

Why is anyone on this site making transfers or talking about making transfers at all right now? With such uncertainty surrounding the upcoming fixtures (FA Cup fallout), surely any planning is futile right now as things could change very quickly. Is it not wiser to stay off the FPL 'transfer' page for a few days?

I'm imagining the more sensible people here are holding fire until after the weekends FA cup games, at which point more long term plans can start to be formulated.

While I'm aware that some people want to avoid price rises and are therefore are doing their transfers now, they are running a real risk. The schedule in the next few weeks is already rather dicey as it is, without compounding the issue by bringing in a bunch of players that might not play in 2 weeks. While I too am eager to get certain players in (City and Sunderland are due TWO DGWs and United, Everton Palace will have one DGW) bringing in any of these players right now could mean a blank or two further down the line.

Just be patient everyone. It's only 4 days of twiddling your thumbs.

-From someone that is seeing his intended transfers rising in price 😉

I made a promise I would never have Adebayor in my FPL team ever again after several failed experiences over the years.

He can look a world beater and then then next game a pub player. Definitely something suspect about his attitude.

However his recent performances have made me re assess and I am reconsidering.

Just not for me. 2 kinds of tactics. Move players around, take hits and get him in, get 2-3 good weeks out of him and then use another transfer once injured.
I will just keep my strikers as are, and make up the points with the lack of hits.

Guys, would appreciate some input on what to do with my team, I've looked at it and can't see anything.

I want to do AJ to Lallana but can only do that by downgrading Kosc or Tekkers (Kosc has two games coming up with a good chance of a cleanie, and the only downgrade of Tekkers that would let me do it - who is in form - is Lambert and I'm not keen on doubling).

    Boruc (K Davis)
    Kosc Azpi Distin (Bruce Bennett)
    Haz Yaya Mata AJ (Noone)
    Suarez Sturridge Tekkers

1ft, 0.2 itb. Any suggestions are welcome.

I don't think there are any big problems here. The bench could leave you in a spot of bother as time for bruce, bennett and noone is a concern. However, most players (me included) have all or some of these.

I think save for the moment, until we understand more about GW29 and the upcoming doubles.

AJ has some grim fixtures, but then he could have a double coming up.

How bad would your team be without Fantasy football scouts advice? I know I'd be far worse and way behind in mini leagues as the people here influence my decisions and the articles/scout picks and captain poll (which are all usually right) helps me make the transfers.

This year at the start I wasn't taking it serious and rarely posted here and by week 13 I was 900,000 in the world and about 10th out of 14 in my money league. Since then I started looking here more and have jumped to 84,000 in the world and 1st by 50 points in the mini league.

So how much does this website influence your decisions or do you choose to go alone and just go on here to make sure on the transfers?

I am better off when I don't come on here... I spend too much time looking at underlying stats, and not enough time in the fantasy.premierleague.com website looking at the only stat that matters (points).

That said, this is year of the casual player... In the past, underlying stats was the best way to identify the upcoming goalscorers, rather than "order by points" descending.

well over time I've learnt to filter out most of the crap that gets peddled on here and who offers the solid advice. But I certainly think without much of the advice I've had on here over the last 2 seasons or so I'd be doing a heck of a lot worse.

What this site often gives you is that little nugget of advice that allows to get in early on certain players or plan for things the casuals won't see, like GW29.

Nope. All you need to know is who's producing the goods. You can get that by reading the newspaper! If you watch games you get distracted by players who look good in real life but are fantasy red herrings.

New to FFS this season and although I'm on here most days, this is my first post.

I've saved my wildcard knowing that there would be DGWs towards the end of the season where I could do more damage with it (rather than using it kneejerk in week 3 and being no better off long term).

My question is, what's the best way to use it? Do I keep building my team for long term, but then use it just before the biggest DGW and load up on those players? Or do i try and get in players with a DGW early and then use it after to ship them out?

For anyone else in this situation I'd like to hear your thoughts

I am not in this situation, but had planned to be before injuries took ahold of my team.

In general, I think it will depend on which teams are in the double gameweek e.g. if it's a Fulham double gameweek, then perhaps burn points getting them in, and wildcard yourself out of trouble. If it's a city and chelsea double gameweek, then you can wildcard players in and transfer your way out over weeks as required.

      Does that make sense?

makes sense, i suppose if they've got long term potential then there's no rush to get them out. just need to know the next round of DGWs from the FA cup and hopefully it will help my decision making

Boruc (K Davis) - no problems here, but could be keeperless in gameweek 29
Kosc Azpi Distin (Bruce Bennett) - get bennett out for someone that plays?
Haz Yaya Mata AJ (Noone) - no problems here, but AJ has some grim fixtures.
Suarez Sturridge Tekkers - fine, but don't hang on to tekkers for too long if he doesn't start banging them in (8.7M quid is lumpy)

I just wondered what you thought of my team?

      Boruc, Kelvin Davis
      Baines, Koscielny, Reid, Bardsley, Yoshida
      Hazard, Mata, Silva, Adam, Noone
      Suarez, Sturridge, Adebayor

A player by player character assassination is encouraged.

          I can see holes...

Reid hasn't been playing and I've owned him for three weeks, Yoshida may lose his place in coming gameweeks with the return of Lovren, Noone not nailed on, Silva always underperforming versus Yaya in points, no second keeper.

          Dig a bit deeper!

Yeah, missed Reid tbh. You knew Yoshida was short term. Noone...not sure yet.

I also have Silva and, yes, he has disappointingly underperformed so far but has been a bit unlucky.

Not sure. Is your TV low? Yoshi and Reid looking unsafe now.
Baines is a big out lay, just imagine what you could do with miney if you had Distin.

It's not terribly low, but not huge... 107.7, but that includes 1.3M in the bank.

            Ok.
So defenders? I would start sorting that out. West Ham are the clear defensive bargains this season yet you have none. Im considering doubling.

We have similar teams, I'm thinking maybe time to move Mata on? His returns have been ok but a poor performance at Arsenal and general Utd form, I'm not sure he can sustain even an assist a game.

Start thinking about how you're going to get Aguero in instead of Adebayor - going to be a key move I think. Possibly Mata out?

Unless I'm misreading your post..Liverpool don't have a blank on GW28 and have a very good chance of a blank on GW29.

        Marshall Mannone
        Coleman Ward Clyne Ivanovic Burner
        Mata Eriksen Hazard Lallana Pozuelo
        JRod Sturridge Suarez

        2.1 ITB and 1 FT

        What to do?

Main obvious options are to get rid of Eriksen Pozuelo or Clyne

Don't think anyone came up with clear answer earlier
Came down to being able to move deadline or not.
Can't see how that would happen, also can't think it would be fair that people will have already made subs for next GW then they add a game

No one knows. Probably the latter, although they will have to rearrange it very soon to do that. Probably unlikely.
