634x258 Drop the Flop

Our second instalment in a new series of articles shines the spotlight on two premium-priced players who would probably chuckle at the notion of being called ‘Flops’. Nonetheless, the Fantasy world is remorseless, and once you fall by the wayside as these two have, there can be no mercy shown by managers longing for those green arrows:

Mesut Ozil

Brought in by Arsenal on transfer deadline day for £42.5m, Ozil was introduced to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at a similarly premium price of 10.0, making him the most expensive midfielder in the game. Expectations were, hence, almost unreasonably high. Nonetheless, after just seven Gameweeks, and a price increase to 10.8, it seemed that our initial hopes were justified and that the German could provide a genuinely consistent source of points throughout the season. Quickly proving why he acquired the nickname ‘King of the Assist’ during his time in Spain, Ozil’s first 12 games saw him tee up team-mates eight times, with four goals over that time further delighting his owners.

However, since Arsenal’s 6-3 drubbing at the Etihad back in Gameweek 16, things have slowly turned sour for Ozil and his owners. A shoulder injury picked up in late December saw the German miss two fixtures and, since his return, the Gunners’ record signing has produced a number of lacklustre displays which have subsequently served up no more than a meagre assist. Now down to just 9.7, a price tag still hardly justified for a player with attacking returns in only one of his last eight games, and with pundits queuing up to shoot down his performances after every match, it looks like it’s finally time to stop convincing yourself that Ozil’s class will shine through and wave “Auf Wiedersehen” to this Flop.

The good news is that Ozil’s premium price tag affords managers a wealth of options in looking for a replacement. Amongst the FPL midfield options, only Yaya Toure, Eden Hazard and Manchester United new boy Juan Mata are more expensive than the former Real Madrid man, although managers may naturally recoil from the idea of investing so much budget in any of United’s assets right now, whilst also turn their nose up at upgrading to such ‘safe’, template options as Toure or Hazard. Certainly, Toure’s upcoming back-to-back blanks diminish his short-term appeal.

The 8.0 priced Adam Lallana may now appear to be a bandwagon long since missed, but with fine fixtures ahead (whm, LIV, cry, NOR) the league’s most in-form midfielder is undoubtedly a competent and secure alternative to Ozil. On the other hand, for those uncomfortable with the thought of ridding themselves of Arsenal coverage, downgrading to Ozil’s midfield team-mate Santi Cazorla would seem to be the most sensible option, if you can stomach the Gunners’ blank Gameweek 29. The little Spaniard has picked up more than double the amount of points accrued by Ozil over the past five Gameweeks, and available for a similar price of 9.6 but with just a 3.7% ownership, Cazorla looks a decent differential as the Gunners go in search of their first league title for ten years.

Wayne Rooney

It would be fair to say that for the first half of the season Rooney emerged from the shadow of his strike partner Robin Van Persie to establish himself as the number one Fantasy option in United’s ranks. Nine goals and 11 assists in the opening 18 Gameweeks saw the 28-year-old deny his team’s faltering form to confirm himself as a consistent source of points, and with six double figure hauls amassed in that period, Rooney proved to be a dependable captaincy option for those resisting the temptation of a certain Uruguayan.

Plagued by injury throughout January, however, Rooney’s stock went into rapid free-fall. His return for United’s Gameweek 23 fixture with Cardiff looked promising, but with a meagre six points accrued in the four games since then, those who chose to draft the England man back into their sides have been left rueing the decision. With United continuing to stutter, and Rooney suffering from his versatility as David Moyes tries to accommodate him, Van Persie and Mata in the Red Devils’ line-up, it would seem that Rooney’s time as a viable fantasy option is up.

The main concern for the 11.2-priced Rooney’s owners will naturally be how valuable our frontline slots have become this season, with so many forwards offering outstanding value for significantly less outlay. Daniel Sturridge is, of course, one such contender. Having scored in every game since his comeback from injury in Gameweek 21, the Liverpool frontman has begun to outshine his team-mate Luis Suarez in recent weeks, and with fixtures against Swansea and Southampton to come next – at a time where Rooney has a blank Gameweek 28 – it’s hard to see past the 10.1-priced Sturridge as the perfect replacement.

The imminent return of Sergio Aguero will also have Fantasy managers on alert. Those holding Rooney might fancy an upgrade to the big-hitting Argentine, who – like Sturridge – still sits above Rooney in the FPL forward rankings, despite missing more than double the number of games as the United forward throughout the campaign thus far. Once City’s back-to-back blanks in Gameweek 28 and 29 are over, Aguero will surely be one to consider, given that his side will have three doubles from Gameweek 30 onwards – whilst it’s accepted he won’t play every minute of those matches, Aguero, in comparison to other frontline options, has shown he needs little time to deliver.

There are plenty of cheaper alternatives to mull over, too. Emmanuel Adebayor has recently climbed our Watchlist as he continues his renaissance under Tim Sherwood, whilst, like the Togo international, Southampton duo Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez have a fixture in Gameweek 28 and 29 and are both showing strong form.

However, for those in search of some real differential value in the attempt to shake up mini-leagues, it’s worth monitoring Romelu Lukaku’s recovery from an ankle injury. If the Everton forward remains on the sidelines, his Toffees team-mate Lacina Traore could be one to mull over – the Ivorian needed just four minutes to notch on his debut against Swansea in the FA Cup last weekend and, at 7.5, with some stand-out fixtures to follow, could prove to be the canniest of calls.

Loco - Have you started thinking about the Europa game? Unsure whether to go with Europa tried and tested players e.g. Allen, Yilmaz, Konoplankya or move to the Europa big guns e.g. Tevez, Adebayor, Martinez or play the fixtures e.g.Rossi, Gamiero,Adriano

Not Loco but my two cents.

I'd keep both Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko if you have them.

The new teams can be a bit risky, as some bigger teams tend to rest players.

There was an interview with Marek Hamsik in one of the Slovakian newspapers and he moreless said they will focus on the league, then cup then EL. But it could have been only his personal opinion.

Thanks, that is my worry. Really difficult to know who will rotate and who will play their full strength team. You can see a game such as Dnipro vs Lazio and think that it is an obvious Lazio win. But Dnipro will really go for the game and in reality would be considered favourites if Lazio go into the game half-hearted.

Yeah, I agree. I would definitely go for players you know, who score and are from teams who might have an incentive should they succeed. Red Bull Salzburg is another such team. (Alan, Gulacsi)

Generally you hit the jackpot if you get the top teams starting players right.

The last two seasons, I burned myself badly in the EL jackpot, was in top 200-500 both years and dropped out very fast.

EL is in a way much more challenging than other Fantasy games due to the massive rotation.

Yeah I completely agree. Very challenging but enjoyable if you get it right. How are you doing this season? I am currently 3rd in the world so the pressure is on!

I think you might be right about sticking to the tried and tested Europa League options. We can then bring in the big hitters once we know who are taking the competition seriously.

That is very impressive, good luck hope you keep it up.

I'm 927 in EL this year, which is worse than the previous ones but at least I am not as nervous about loosing points.

Blew the CL, 36 k at the moment.

By the way do you have your WC's?

I kept them as I'd like to use them in the next round once I have a clue, which teams are taking it seriously.

Most people in gw 29 will either field less then 11 or take hits to field 11 this being said you could wildcard and make up a lot of ground fielding a strong 11 that week. Having said this, your team is good and you may be better off holding it till one of the massive dgw.

Is anyone else considering shipping out Suarez over the next few weeks?

It is clear that his force as a fantasy asset has diminished since the return of Sturridge, who appears to have taken up the central front role in the Liverpool team. Sturridge's "selfish" style of play tends to result in Sturridge getting more of a share of the "big" chances and is therefore both robbing points from the Uruguayan, and representing significantly better value. With a Liverpool blank approaching can we afford to have both Suarez AND Sturridge?

Suarez gained his inflated price through playing in that central role, being the focus of the team, but has that price now become a misrepresentation of his 'current' potential for fantasy points and more of a shadow of his past exploits?

Bought him @ 11.1m, no way I'm able to pay 13.4m for him when I want him back, which will inevitably happen.

Sturridge on the other hand I can find 10.m if needs be....

GB, you're talking about a 10ppg that would justify a 20m price tag. All the stats show that he's still getting plenty of shots on target. Just not getting the points just now.

You're merging his PPG with a different era of playing. The formation and tactics have changed, and so have Suarez's points potential. The stats show plenty of shots, but it also shows many are coming from a distance.

It's an uber price he has at the moment, and that level of investment demands a player who is almost guaranteed to score significantly more than all other players. That is something that is just not happening under this new Liverpool set-up.

I asked a few weeks ago if he was going the RVP 2013 route -- as soon as 3 forwards emerge as better than him, I will consider shipping as I have Sturridge already and will definitely want Aguero. No other forward compares to him right now, though, so it would be dropping the best player in the game. Not ready to do that yet, though Lukaku and Benteke outperformed RVP and destroyed him in value last winter/spring.

Sturridge is in better form than Suarez, but Suarez is still statistically and in real life easily in the top 3 forwards to own. Also, I got him from the start so he only cost me 10.9m, less than Rooney.

Top 3 scoring forwards since GW21, when Sturridge returned (total points and PPG):

      Sturridge.. 59 (9.8)
      Adebayor. .46 (7.7)
      Suarez..... 40 (6.7)
      Benteke... 33 (5.5)
      Eto'o........ 33 (6.6)

Just because Sturridge is better value than Suarez doesn't mean Suarez's FPL returns have been poor. Far from it.

Now put their prices there 🙂 Could the saved funds increase your net points tally by investing elsewhere?

For a £13m+ player, the budget strikers seem to be finding it far too easy to keep up, and for that price you'd need him to be far beyond their level of scoring.

Big thing this year, and why people are able to afford ludicrous RVP Suarez Sturridge frontlines, is that the money is wasted elsewhere so you might as well spend it up front where the points are greatest

This has always been my argument as well 🙂 But traversing the blanks adds a bit more complexity, and with Hazard, Mata and Gerrard performing and the mid-pricey ranged strikers keeping up with Suarez, it may be sensible to spend the £s elsewhere.

Also, Sturridge is 7 goals from 22 attempts over that period (32% conversion). He's unlikely to keep that up for the rest of the season - before he got injured he was 9 goals from 41, a much more realistic 22%.

The type of chances he gets though warrant that level of conversion. His constant focus on attacking runs is making it easy for the likes of Gerrard and Suarez to reward him with one-on-one situations.

For now, while he's on his streaky run of form, yes you may have a point.

But it's just not sustainable. Look at last season for example and see how many strikers got anywhere near 32% conversion. RVP, for example, was down at 18%.

There is no doubt, Sturridge is essential at the moment and I also agree that Suarez has not been at his best but yet still averaging nearly 5.5 points per game in the last 5 weeks.

I have watched a fair bit of Liverpool in recent weeks and here is my take on Suarez

      1. He is creating a lot of chances but his team mates have let him down by not putting the chance away.

      2. He is playing in a different position because Lucas is injured and not getting in the box as often as he was before.

      3. He has hit the post on a few occasions recently, so is not far away from capitalising.

Anyway my point is that I think it would be foolish to sell Suarez just now and here is why:

      1. It would cost way too much to get him back.

      2. He is still playing well above the number of minutes [292 minutes/4 weeks] for a great player in his price range.

      3. He has just fallen below the number of points scored [23 points/4 weeks] for a great performing player in his price range. So even if he stays at this current level he is still worth keeping but would think about selling if he drops much more.

      I'm glad you mentioned it.

I had a little quote from Suarez about his fear of missing the world cup (a la Falcao/Walcott) and how he is focussing on Liverpool. Didn't make the final edit for "Say What", but in my interpretation i asked the question - are people thinking the unthinkable?

I am looking at either Suarez or RVP as my placeholder for Aguero, but form will determine who goes when the Argentinian is back to full health. I am not completely afraid of dropping Suarez, but still at about 7.8 on the sh!t my pants scale.

On current form that is essential but I shall evaluate it more when I am getting Aguero because Adebayor allows me to keep my excellent midfield and also upgrade my already strong defence, i.e. get Coleman for Koscielny when they have their bad run of games and Everton have nice fixtures.

My current forwards are Sturridge | Suarez | Adebayor and 4.0M in bank.

In a pretty serious money league, and presently sit in 3rd (out of 23). My team is as follows:

    Mannone Marshall
    Shaw Kolarov Ward Kosc Ivan
    Silva Mata Hazard Gerrard mutch
    SaS Dzeko
    2.9 in bank

    My plan is this:

    Week 27 - No Moves

    Week 28
IN - Azpil, OUT - Kolarov
IN - Lallana, OUT - Mata
IN - Paulinho, OUT - Silva

    Week 29
IN - RVP, OUT - Dzeko

    Week 30 - No Moves

    Week 31
IN - 2 Man City, OUT - ?? (price and injury dependent)

I never understood this differential thingy, generally just get as many good players as possible, as not everyone will have all of them.

A differential is someone we wish he could perform but doesn't, hence the low ownership, if lucky it is a player coming back from injury, in that case I agree there is a chance he can get back to his levels of performance.

Good shouts and yeah Kolarov tends to get to a lot of people on here, never fully understood why.

I sold AJ to Eriksen on my WC as a smart move to switch to the next source of points...

But all in all actually getting players like Yaya, Coleman , Ramsey, Suarez early on and having them, when your opponents cannot afford them is a sort of differential.

Might triple up on City post GW29 then, given that they have will have 12 PL games in 9 Gameweeks.

Seems like a good idea. Think Barca will knock them out over 2 legs so less rotation.

very solid my plan is to have 2 FTs come GW30 with which I can buy back Yaya and Kun. Then I can get Kompany in for DGW and ride 3 City till the end of the season

Good call -- have never owned but his ownership will be impossible if he goes nuts for a dgw.

Yeah the only thing is whether I should keep Kolarov... actually wait, that's a dumb question

        the 4 rules of Kolarov

        1) Never Buy
        2) Never Own
        3) Never Sell
        4) Never Bench

There's no non-captaincy with him as only Ginkapo is nuts enough to do it.

You'd think never buy and never own are the same rule but I don't remember buying him, it just happened.

Check out my January Wild Card Defenders (gw23):

            Coleman Baines Kolarov Hudson Gabiddon

Coleman and Gabiddon gone, Hudson and Kolarov out in gw28. Might be none left by gw29 if I ship Baines for Evra. Good times.

Not many City players (ones that you will want anyways) will feature in all of those tats for sure 😆
