It’s exactly a year since Fabian Delph was the first to climb aboard last season’s 10 yellow card Suspension Tightrope. For the last six games, the Villa midfielder had the chance to repeat that feat but, while he continued to press his claims for international recognition, including a goal (and own goal) in the win over West Brom in January, a defeated opponent from that Midlands derby has been steadily making his way up the charts to pip Delph at the post.

With a third booking of 2014 secured in stoppage time against Fulham at The Hawthorns on Saturday, Jonas Olsson became the first man to reach nine yellows this season and subsequently earn first place on the second tightrope of the season.

Replacing Olsson in the band on eight yellows, was Everton’s Gareth Barry, booked (eventually) for a series of fouls in the Saturday lunchtime defeat to Chelsea. The Toffees midfielder joins David Luiz, Marouane Chamakh, Wayne Rooney, Jon Walters and Claudio Yacob, who, along with the aforementioned Delph, made it through the weekend with his copybook unblotted.

This week’s Tightrope, which highlights those players with at least seven cautions accrued, now has 23 names. Four teams supply us with three players apiece – West Brom (Olsson, Yacob and Fabrice Mulumbu), Villa (Delph, Gabby Agbonlahor and Ciaran Clark, Chelsea (Luiz, Branislav Ivanovicand Ramires and Newcastle (Mathieu Debuchy, Moussa Sissoko and Cheick Tiote.

With no new suspensions from the weekend, we just need to tidy up the returning faces, as Craig Bellamy, Wes Brown and Andy Carroll are once again available for selection. While Bellamy and Carroll face up to fixtures at Spurs and Everton respectively, Brown is set for a Capital One Cup Final clash with City and, with an FA Cup fixture the following weekend, won’t be back for league duties until March 15, when the Black Cats welcome Palace to the Stadium of Light in Gameweek 20.

as a United fan it would be awful to lose Rooney for 2 games

But, as an RvP owner, it would be major lols if Rooney got booked in GWs 29 and 30, and missed the DGW as a result

The thing about Spurs’ 1-0 loss at Norwich is that it’s the kind of result the underlying numbers have hinted at since Tim Sherwood took over. A combination of otherworldly finishing from Emmanuel Adebayor and last-ditch defending and goalkeeping has masked some fairly poor performances from Spurs and allowed the squad to remain within striking distance of Liverpool. Those aren’t things you can depend on every week, and the game against Norwich showed why. If you aren’t creating a lot of chances, eventually there will come a time when you don’t convert any of the handful you do. Spurs are actually lucky that week didn’t come before now.

I can field a reasonable 11 for next game week, and around 9 there em after, but is it worth getting rid of Silva only to bring him back in a couple of weeks down the line?
    And if so for whom?

I would get rid of him and not bring him back he has been disappointing -

Hazard is the obvious one if you don't have him - otherwise it's a guess - most of the big hitters have blanks.

Maybe you could downgrade for a couple of weeks and then upgrade to Mata for the double?

The financial “reward” for Europa League qualification doesn’t offset the depth needed to compete in both that tournament and the Premier League without risking a noticeable drop-off in the latter. Just ask Swansea this season. Or Liverpool and Newcastle the year before. The only teams that have been able to move forward despite a continued presence in the Europa League are Chelsea, who have more money than God, and Spurs, a lone exception because the transfers of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale allowed them to buy approximately 80,000 new players to fill out their bench.

saw some figures for man utd in the europa league compared with champions league and they may as well miss out on europe completely. harry redknapp got some stick for playing joke teams in the europa but you look at all these teams like newcastle, stoke and swansea and i think it's fair enough. uefa should shorten the competition if they want it taken more seriously
