Our usual Monday lunchtime regular is rolled out as we assess the lessons learned from the 10 matches played out over the weekend:

Sturridge is a machine
An incredible run of goals, demonstrating ruthless finishing, has left Luis Suarez in his wake and threatens to snatch the Golden Boot from his team-mate. The scenario is compounded by Suarez’ own form – just a single strike in the previous six compared to Sturridge’s eight goals over the same period pretty much sums up the current state of play across the Fantasy games. Hands up – we were wrong to back Suarez in the Picks but it’s fair to say that we were expecting the Uruguayan to break out and Sturridge to struggle to maintain his strike rate – while both are inevitable, neither looks likely to happen just yet.

Jelavic & Long deliver
The pairing dismantled the Cardiff back four, combining on several occasions, not least for Jelavic’s superbly constructed opening goal, which followed Tom Huddlestone’s early missile. The duo are exceeding all expectations, allowing Steve Bruce to look up the table rather than down from this point on. Fantasy managers have to take notice – the pairing, Jelavic in particular, are strikers of some pedigree that can more than justify their Fantasy price tags.

Snodgrass is the Canary on song
We made it our mission to check out Snodgrass’ performance and tipped him via the Scout Picks bench. He duly delivered. The Scot is undeniably Chris Hughton’s key man as they look to keep themselves away from the relegation trapdoor – showdowns with Villa and Stoke over the next two offer him further chance to deliver at a time when many midfielders are facing blanks. With the following fixtures outstanding, Snodgrass is becoming more difficult to ignore.

Soljskaer can’t plug the gaps
The home battering by Hull is just one in a series of inept performances under the new man in charge. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cancelled the Abu Dhabi trip, and there’s little wonder – his side have failed to score in five of the seven league games since he arrived in Wales, whilst the Bluebirds have been equally shambolic at the back, conceding at least twice in all but two matches under the Norwegian. Fantasy managers will surely be backing their opponents for goals – starting with Tottenham this coming weekend. They then face Everton and Liverpool after that – Suarez and Sturridge will be licking their lips.

Everton need Lukaku…
The big Belgian’s early withdrawal in the Gameweek 24 loss at Liverpool has coincided with a run which has seen Everton score in only one of their last four fixtures. Okay, so they were facing strong defences, but the Toffees’ confidence in front of goal appears to have dipped and Lukaku’s return will be welcomed by Roberto Martinez. The Belgian was hardly prolific prior to his injury but his physical presence and pace to turn a back four could well be crucial if the Toffees are to re-establish themselves as an attacking force.

…but perhaps not quite as much as City need Aguero
The City goal machine has well and truly stopped firing since the Argentine limped off at Tottenham last month. A meager 1-0 win over Stoke means Manuel Pellegrini’s side have now scored just three times in their last five in all competitions – Edin Dzeko’s miss-of-the-season contender from two yards out sums up City’s toils up top right now. With City set for back-to-back blanks and reports suggesting Aguero will be back in full training tomorrow, Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo are being offloaded in large numbers as Fantasy managers make plans for the Argentine’s return. With none of his fellow frontmen able to step up in Aguero’s absence, City’s title challenge may well just depend on his ability to remain injury-free from here on in.

We’re not so sure about Arsenal and Ozil
Sidelined with a thigh injury, the German’s absence saw Arsenal score more than three goals for only the second time this term as they tore Sunderland apart at the Emirates. Tomas Rosicky was influential in the role in “the hole” and the Gunners display certainly showed Arsene Wenger he can afford to rest his record signing when required. Having seen his decision to bench Olivier Giroud for a couple of games pay off at the weekend as the Frenchman returned with a brace and assist, Wenger may look to utilise Ozil more sparingly for fear of burn-out.

Van Persie and Rooney can make it interesting
While Aguero is undoubtedly set to return to the radar, let’s not write the United heavy-hitters off just yet. Van Persie is showing consistency since he returned to partner Rooney and the latter’s goal, coupled with his new contract, suggests the confidence is back. With Gameweek 29 intact and a double Gameweek 31, United essentially have four fixtures over that run at a time when most clubs play twice – there’s no denying that the champions’ strike pairing are an option to consider and, given their rapid decline in ownership, are ready-made differentials with the potential to explode if David Moyes can get United purring. Admittedly, that remains a big “if”.

Evra is playing for his United future
Recent seasons have seen the Frenchman emerge as an attacking force and a pair of assists at Palace continued that form. Evra has excelled in a very mediocre United defence this term – from a Fantasy perspective he stands out and, had his team-mates demonstrated more defensive resilience, he’d be right up there at the very top of the defender rankings.

Magath has the players on side
Crucially, the new man in charge at the Cottage seems to have his players on board. The Fulham team ran to Felix Magath after scoring at the Hawthorns, whilst the likes of Lewis Holtby has defended the German’s notoriously tough training methods. We hinted at the Cottagers’ potential in our Mission article and made a point to check in this weekend – there are definitely shoots of recovery, but Fulham’s assets have a long way to go before we look to invest.

Nolan doesn’t need Carroll after all
The Hammers skipper may not be boarding the plane to Brazil but he’s certainly making our squads. We didn’t anticipate this run from Nolan while Andy Carroll was suspended but he’s proved the doubters wrong with three goals and an assist in three games without his big sidekick. He’s killed the myth and Saturday’s goal from a Carlton Cole knock-down was reminiscent of several scored alongside Carroll. The latter is now back from his ban and Nolan’s bandwagon is in full flow – 50,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have already snapped him up since the weekend, but if Hull beat Brighton in the cup this evening and postpone his Gameweek 29 clash with the Tigers, there’s little appeal in his upcoming schedule.

Monk has got Swansea scoring
A 3-0 home victory in his first match in charge has been followed by four goals in the last two road trips as Garry Monk looks to go on the offensive. Yesterday’s three goals at Anfield highlighted Swansea’s more offensive approach – they had previously scored four goals in Michael Laudrup’s last nine away games at the helm. Whilst there’s still trouble at the back, things are looking rosier further up the field – Wilfried Bony is starting to show some consistency and Jonjo Shelvey is emerging as an unlikely option, though yesterday’s hamstring injury withdrawal suggests his acquisition comes with risk attached. If Michu can prove his fitness soon, though, he could soon appear on our radars if Monk continues to get goals from his side.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Would you rather have Bony(CPL) or Lambert(LIV) this week?

First instinct is Bony (who I have currently), but the more I think about it, I'm starting to favour Lambert

paper fixture and bony has 6 league goals in 2014, lambert has 2.

Also, you already have Bony so its not really good use of a transfer to sell him when he has a nice fixture and form

Not really form. Both his goals last weekend were due to Skrtel brain fades rather than striking ability. Possibly indicating that Lambert would be the better choice. Maybe. Just an idea.

This is my thinking. Bony isn't suddenly in form, he plays at a similar level in every game, and takes some good shots every game, sometime they go in, sometimes not. I think keeping him is probably more logical as having 2FT could prove useful for any curveballs thrown up

Bony. The likeliest lad to score for the Swans. Palace defence is decent but Bony!s playing great stuff. Lallana and Rodriguez can take from Lambert's haul. Hopefully Rodgers has given the Pool defence the biggest bollocking of their lives. They deserve it 🙁

Just planning my transfers and it looks like I might just roll my FT over again in GW29 and just stick with 10 players (9 if Adrian blanks, and only 8 if Evans is still dead), rather than get 11 players...

I can have 5-3-1 with a FT to spare, but don't see anyone worthwhile getting when I have Yaya, Mirallas, Suarez and Sturridge all coming back for the next game with DGWs to come...

    GW28 - Eriksen > Snodgrass
    GW29 - Kos > Terry

Giving me 2FTs for GW30 and this team in GW29...

    Adrian (Mannone)
    Cahill Terry Olsson Ward Evans
    Hazard Mata Snodgrass (Yaya Mirallas)
    JRod (SS)

I think the biggest decision I have is lose Suarez earlier than planned and punt on someone like Adebayor or Jelavic as a placeholder for Aguero coming in on DGW31... but it's a huge risk, Suarez could easily remind us all what he is capable of and be essential again, and I'd be unable to get him back in... 😕

I'm not sure if this is a RMT or not, I think it's more a thought process which could benefit from some outside perspectives...

    Thanks

I thiink you should put out a full squad where possible.

anyone playing against you will likely get 2 points or more per extra player.

so the transfer cost of -4 is worth the gamble - as by the same token you get 0 if you do nothing, but -2 and above if you make transfers. This is then of course 0 if you transfer a city player out (which is therefore a no brainer as long as you didn't buy them early)

No, I'd have a FT to use, so an extra player wouldn't cost anything...

I know I'm losing points potential for GW29 by having one less player, but I think I have to weigh that against losing any of Yaya, Mirallas, Suarez and Sturridge in order to get that extra player...

Mirallas would be the player I'd lose first but he has some brilliant fixtures after the blank, so it doesn't seem right at all...

I don't think mirallas is going to do it for you. Stick Nolan in.

If it costs nothing, do it - you can buy him back and the risk will likely cost you nothing (if nolan get 4 or more) even if you have to pay a hit.

If the Hull game is off I am looking at 8 players in GW29 and rolling a FT over into GW30 to load up on DGW-players. I suspect that more games might be rescheduled for GW31 thus making it a massive DGW and I'd rather bring in quality players with two games in that round than getting 2 points in GW29 from some deadweight that will just warm my bench for the rest of the season.

This one is in a similar situation. Can field eleven if West ham play GW29 but Yoshida is one. Not sure its woth a transfer with the options available. Eriksen has to go though and This one will probably get Snodgrass too. As for losing Suarez, can you afford to get him back if/when Studge gets injured.

What are Suarez and Sturridge owners doing going forwards?

I was planning on ditching Sturridge when Aguero was back, but he's on great form, so that doesn't seem to make sense.

Is it worth keeping Sturridge over Aguero? Or is it worth trying to make room for all three of them up front?

Seriously considering a front 3 of Aguero, Rooney and Sturridge after GW 29.. Shipping Suarez seems crazy but it's that time of the season where such a risk is worth taking imo.

My overall rank is just under the 500k mark so it's time for a gamble I think!

I have laboured around the 100k mark for way too long this year, and having jumped up to 50k this week, I feel I need to be bold to continue to rise...

Suarez out could be that bold move that will make (or break) our respective seasons...

If you dont have the funds maybe get sturridge before any potential price rise as he will also have a double gameweek soon enough and add to ur mid/defence for week29

A)Lewis Holtby,Go with my gut feeling that fulham will give a fight in the upcoming Gameweeks
B)Lallana,Double up on Southampton For the 2 gws than get lambert out
C)Nolan,Even if it is blank for gw29 we know that it is going to be low scoring

Holtby, very good player. Fulham aren't great but They really need a result. Playing better the last few games and I think he's playing number 10.

Lallana, great form. Unfortunately Pool!s defence is poor.

I have Adam since last GW but he's inconsistent.

Why not keep Yaya? Find some way of getting as close to 11 as possible for GW29. You'll lose money selling him, have to pay more to get him back but most importantly he'll do more than the 3 mentioned above, combined !

Yes, but the teams who have a game in GW29 are mostly not teams you'd get excited about having a DGW - Stoke, Norwich, Cardiff, Palace, Fulham, West Brom.

But IF Hull loses in cup, both Hull and West Ham offer some interesting options. I'm to my own surprise thinking particularly of attacking options, Jelavic and Carroll.

Defenders perhaps. But mids and strikers don't interest me. If I wanted them long term, maybe. But a transfer in and a transfer out for one Gameweek just doesn't sound like value to me

For those 2 weeks, Hull has got reasonable fixtures, and check how much Jelavic has got shots recently, against better teams. If Hull has a match GW29, I'll use one of my FT to Dzeko->Jello.

Transfer in, transfer out is the name of the game when we have blank GW's. I tend to regret more missing a big haul than losing 2 points in an extra transfer to have a full squad.

Yeah, if I have to take a hit to get rid of them, it is another 4 points. I suppose I will go through this with 2 hits. So, it's 6 points loss for the chance of getting something more out of the next 2 GW.

And with attackers, you're going to use one transfer to get Aguero in for GW30 or GW31 anyway, so now it's just to have the player you feel scores the most until then. The transfer out is quite insignificant in this equation, because you're going to use it anyway when Aguero returns, regardless of who you have for GW's 28 and 29.

So it's just the question, do you think you can find a player who will outscore Dzeko+4 in next two GW? If Hammers and Hull play GW29, Jelavic and Carroll, by default, will score 4 each just for being there. So the punt is really just will they give some negative or positive return. Seen the fixtures, I'd punt they both will get some attacking returns and thus taking hit to get one of them is worth more than having no player at all.

Yes, I guess it does depend on who you currently have. In my case Ade will be making way for Aguero and he has a game in GW29. And I have too much cash tied up in Sturridge and Suarez who I want to keep.

But if I had Negredo or Dzeko then yeah, I'd be considering a short-term punt on Jelavic or Carroll.

Meh. The thing is that where this DGW analogy falls down is that he doesn't have 180 minutes of football to score in. Just 90. So there isn't any added benefit of Captaincy over anyone else who plays that week, and everyone will have a few players that week.

Re my hot topic about mistakingly updating the wrong gameweek team in UFPL and thereby leaving 50 pts on my bench.

Just got a reply back from UFPL...

The good news is that I was right, it was a fault with the design that has been corrected, so I'm not a total ignoramus.
"There was an issue (which has since been fixed) where using the link on the status page of Fantasy Premier League took you to your Gameweek 2 squad and not your Gameweek 1 team."

    The bad news is....

Anyone else considering bringing in two Norwich players? Doesn't feel right.

One is more than enough... might get Olssen and that's it.

A very happy Olsson owner here, enjoyed all 90 minutes against Spurs, an enthralling experience for any FPL player.

I think almost everybody is, and shares your feeling too. It's just this: great fixtures, good home defensive form and Snodgrass finally giving some end product. So, Snod and a Norwich defender sounds like a great plan. Except for that it means doubling up on one of the worst teams in the whole league.

Have Olsson & Ruddy. Keep it tight, Norwich!

gameweek 29 at the moment.....not bad, no?

    Boruc
    Azpilicueta Ward Bruce Reid
    Hazard Mata Lallana Snodgrass Puncheon
    Rooney

Might have to lose Reid and Bruce?

Hi guys I have managed to save up to 2FTs for the next GW.

My current team is here: http://i.imgur.com/Jsttbgw.png

    This is what I'm thinking:

    A) Johnson, Bardsley --> Puncheon, Azpilicueta
    B) Johnson, Barsley --> Mirallas, Rosenior
    C) Johnson, Szczesny -> Lallana, Marshall

    Leaning towards A myself.

After this my priority should be to ship out either Szczesny or Mertesacker.

GW31 becomes a whole new ball game if Liverpool vs Sunderland is arranged for the Tuesday same as Manchester derby.

You would need 4 striker spots.....Aguero, RVP, Suarez, Sturridge LOL

Who still has their wildcard and hoping the double gameweek reschedules are planned after GW31 (or even on it) to really get away from rivals?

Eve, Mci and Sun are guaranteed DGW31. Considering I'll have 0 Eve and Mci going into GW30, I'm definitely considering WCing in 31.

I'll take any opinions on this:

    Adrian, Mannone
    Baines, Mert, Komp, Olsson, Collins
    Cazorla, Mata, Hazard, Punch, Mutch
    Suarez, Sturridge, Dzeko

2 frees, Kompany and Dzeko are out.

    A. Saints def + Spurs fwd
    B. Chelsea def + Saints fwd

Flanagan. Gets forward a fair bit. Small chance of a goal or assist. Pool likely to score more than Saints on the day.
