Our weekly focus on player recommendations for the next four to six Gameweeks is rolled out once again this afternoon. As always, we focus on the main movers and shakers, with the upcoming blank Gameweeks playing a major part in this week’s assessment. The full listings per classification are available on the sidebar on your right:

The Defence

Norwich budget duo John Ruddy and Martin Olsson continue to rise in our estimations. It’s four home clean sheets in a row now for Chris Hughton’s side and with Stoke (in Gameweek 29), Sunderland and West Brom the next three visitors, there’s every chance that streak could be extended. The Canaries also face fellow-strugglers Villa, Swansea and Fulham in the next seven and have one of the best schedules around before the fixtures turn nasty in Gameweek 35.

Tim Howard and Seamus Coleman also edge their way up the rankings. Everton may not have a Gameweek 29 but are very much worthy of our attention – three home games (WHM, CAR, SWA) and a trip to Fulham in the next five, in addition to the fact they have two as-yet-unscheduled doubles to factor in, means Roberto Martinez’ team will be on many a radar. The Toffees will be hoping that upcoming schedule can improve upon a disappointing defensive record which has harvested just single clean sheet in 12 league matches, whilst Coleman’s eye for goal could well benefit from that run of matches.

Palace are the only side with a match in both Gameweek 28 and 29 who also have a double still to be scheduled. Cut-price pair Julian Speroni and Joel Ward climb in the rankings, then, while the next eight Gameweeks hands Tony Pulis’ side five favourable road trips (swa, sun, new, car, whm) and a home clash with Villa to boost their prospects of beating the drop.

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic and Erik Pieters are also elevated due to their Gameweek 29 duties. Look beyond that, though, and the schedule is definitely favourable to the Potters – from Gameweek 29-35 they have six matches (nor, WHM, avl, HUL, NEW, car) which suggest Fantasy points could be on the menu.

Jan Vertonghen’s return from injury has tightened up the Tottenham back-four. Tim Sherwood’s side have conceded just twice in four matches with the Belgian back at the heart of defence and with a home game against Cardiff followed by a Gameweek 29 fixture (albeit away to Chelsea), Vertonghen’s goal threat earns him the nod. The downside, though, is the following fixtures- after the trip to Stamford Bridge, Spurs also square up to Arsenal, Southampton and Liverpool and will struggle to attract much investment.

A number of options take a fall this week as we factor in the blanks over the next couple of rounds, though Cardiff pair David Marshalland Steven Caulker suffer the ignominy of dropping in spite of the fact they feature in both Gameweek 28 and 29. Quite simply, the Bluebirds’ dire defensive form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is anything but convincing and, as Saturday’s 4-0 home thrashing by Hull showed, is enough to negate any apparently strong fixture.

The Midfield

Back-to-back blanks take City out of the equation here, though Eden Hazard and Adam Lallana both retain their spots in the top three in light of their upcoming schedules. Hazard has been a little inconsistent of late – only one set of return in the last six, whilst Lallana has scored or assisted in four appearances over that period. The Saints face a testing home clash with Liverpool this weekend but have Palace, Norwich and Newcastle in the subsequent four.

A weekend match-winner against Spurs continued Robert Snodgrass’ fine form. The Scot has scored in two of his last three appearances now and, at just 5.9 in FPL with an ownership under 4%, has some very strong underlying statistics to suggest he can maintain his current displays.

As mentioned above, Stoke’s Charlie Adam also has the schedule on his side. The Potters playmaker has struck three times and produced a pair of assists in the last seven league matches and, at 5.8, is Snodgrass’ main rival for our attention – having notched seven times already this term, though, Adam has certainly been far more prolific than his compatriot.

Tom Ince is our Palace midfielder of choice. One point of note is that, after grabbing a goal and assist from the role in “the hole” on his debut, he was moved to the right wing against United last time around. Nonetheless, with the return of Glenn Murray set to knock Jason Puncheon down the spot-kick pecking order, Ince, at 5.5, grabs our attention as a real differential on offer.

Craig Noone’s security of minutes earns him the nod as we assess the Cardiff midfield for potential. Wilfried Zaha’s prospects took a dive after he was subbed off at the break against Hull last weekend and, whilst Magnus Wolf Eikrem turned in an eye-catching display in the same game, it’s yet to be established whether he can nail down a regular role. Noone, at 4.3, looks the safest and most budget-friendly option for now if you reckon Solskjaer’s side can break out of their current malaise.

Two goals in his last four appearances since returning from injury keeps Paulinho in our thoughts. With Christian Eriksen reduced once again to role of bench-warmer, the 6.7-priced Brazilian looks the one form option in Tottenham’s midfield ahead of that plum home clash with Cardiff, though as mentioned above, the short-term schedule isn’t the best for the north London outfit and somewhat tempers our enthusiasm.

The Forwards

The “SAS” continue to lead the way up top, with Daniel Sturridge more than justifying his spot ahead of Luis Suarez at the summit. Granted, a weekend trip to Southampton isn’t the easiest, whilst a blank Gameweek 29 will stretch many benches to the limit due to the pair’s popularity, but yesterday’s announcement of a double Gameweek 31 for the Reds (car, SUN) ensures they stay firmly in the forefront of our thinking.

An average of 7.2 points per game under Tim Sherwood keeps Emmanuel Adebayor in third spot. Now up to 8.3 in FPL, the Tottenham forward has scored or assisted in seven of his 11 appearances under the new man in charge, offering us a real a source of consistency for our third forward slots.

Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez hold steady in light of Southampton’s blank-less run, whilst Peter Crouch moves up in the reckoning. Available for just 5.5, the Stoke forward has notched three times in seven and offers guaranteed game time for those looking to navigate the next couple of weekends.

Nikica Jelavic and Loic Remy are both without a fixture in Gameweek 29, though have the form to keep our attention. The Croatian has now notched three times in as many matches for Hull and has a home clash with Newcastle and double Gameweek 31 (WBA, whm) in the next four. Remy grabbed Newcastle’s weekend winner over Villa after returning from suspension and, in addition to his KC trip, squares up to Fulham and Palace in the upcoming four Gameweeks.

Olivier Giroud takes a tumble – ironically on the back of his highest haul of the season. Arsenal’s dire upcoming schedule (sto, (blank), tot, che, MCI, eve) looks enough to bring any bandwagon to a halt and persuade the Frenchman’s owners to seek pastures new. Robin Van Persie also drops due to this weekend’s blank but, having scored in four of his last five league appearances, the United forward looks set for a climb in next week’s refresh.

    Mannone / Szczesny
    Koscielny / Azpilicueta / Collins / Mariappa / Yoshida
Yaya Touré / Hazard / Mata / Lallana / Delph
    Suárez / Sturridge / Benteke

2 FT, £0.6m in the bank.

Mariappa ----> Ward or Dann is the only move I can think of.

For those looking for an Eriksen/Silva/etc replacement as a short term 4th mid for the next 3 games (or long term 5th mid bench fodder for those with inflated TV)

I've been racking my brains trying to figure out who to get in for Eriksen without getting any closer to making a decision...

So I've decided to jot down all the pros and cons in one place...

First things first, if you don't have Lallana already, AND you can afford to get him, I would buy him without even thinking about it, Liverpool are leaking goals atm, and So'ton have 2 good fixtures beyond that before the DGW...

Anyway, the (rather threadbare) list of options IMO is this... Snoddy, Adam, Ince and wait for it... Dejagah!

Snoddy - 5.9m - (avl STO sot SUN swa WBA ful)

    Pros
    - Norwich have decent fixtures for the next 7 weeks until about GW35, so you won't be rushing to get rid of him straight away
    - Snodgrass has brilliant underlying stats, takes A LOT of shots, and hogs all set pieces bar penalties
    - Norwich don't have any blanks

    Cons
    - Norwich don't have any DGWs to come
    - 3.5ppg is fairly average compared to the others, but still decent value

Adam - 5.8m - (ARS nor WHM avl HUL che NEW car TOT FUL wba)

    Pros
    - Takes most set pieces
    - Stoke have a great run of fixtures until the end of the season
    - Decent value with 3.7ppg
    - He rotates pretty well with Sterling until the end of the season if you were of the mind to get him for his DGW and keep them both
    - Stoke don't have any blanks

    Cons
    - Sits too deeply for my liking
    - Underlying stats are not as impressive as Snodgrass or Ince
    - Stoke don't have any DGWs

Ince - 5.5m - (swa SOT sun new CHE car AVL whm)

    Pros
    - Very high 7.5ppg (but admittedly a very short sample size)
    - Has taken most set pieces bar penalties
    - Palace don't have any blanks AND have a DGW to come, so potentially one extra game for him
    - Decent mid term fixtures, which means you could hold him for a while after the DGWs

    Cons
    - Palace don't score many goals
    - The majority of the games you'll have him for are away games

Dejagah - 5.1m (CHE car NEW mci EVE avl NOR tot HUL sto CPL)

    Pros
    - He could be the ultimate differential with only 1095 owners 😯
    - Has the trust of his new manager since he played under him at Wolfsburg. Megath managed to get the best out of him there, so there is precedent for Dejagah's form under his new manager
    - New manager effect, could improve teams performances
    - Good long term fixtures until the end of the season, so once the dust settles he could be a decent 5th mid to have...
    - Fulham don't have any blanks
    - Cheapest of all the options

    Cons
    - It's Fulham
    - Has a fairly low 2.9ppg
    - Fulham don't have any DGWs

    What say you?

The pros and cons almost exactly agreed with my preconceptions too. I wouldn't worry too much about the ppg. The assumption is that they (Snoddy and Dejagah) are now in form after finally getting some points on the board. Snoddy has had good stats most of the season and Dejagah has not been given a fair chance by Jol or Rene. I'm actually quite positive about Snodgrass as he has quite a few ways of scoring and it's not undeserved given his stats. I think form really is more powerful than people think. Look at Adam Johnson who has been poor and even dropped for most of the season. I got him in based on faith in his form changing. The same applies to Dejagah.

Given Snoddy is on set pieces and I think he's shown a solid statistical basis already, I think he is the better one to get particularly as budget shouldn't be so important right now. You need to aim for a proper point scoring midfielder not just a playing 5th mid. (Dejagah could become the former but it might be trickier for many reasons).

I wouldn't worry about ownership particularly as Snoddy is surely still a huge differential in the real world of FPL.

You must mean Ajax is ridiculous. Okay, haven't watched this match, but watched the first half of the match at Amsterdam, and Ajax showed about the worst football I have seen for ages. They were one big unforced error, they failed even simple passes, lost ball easily, had a big hole instead of a defence, and so on. They were outrageously bad.

I've understood that they have some important injuries, but that cannot explain it all.

Yeah, but those are all against awful teams. Their group was seconded by Esbjerg that fights to stay in the Danish top tier. That's awful.

Standard lead Belgian league by a mile and should have topped that group, instead they lost it, gathering just one point. The fourth team was a Swedish mid table team Elfsborg. Also crap.

It seems to me that they either rotated a lot on EL (maybe thinking they rather try to achieve CL through Jupiler) or then suffered a lot of injuries, as none of their players played the whole group stage and many of the regulars started only 2 or 3 whereas their bench players played a lot. Maybe they just thought that it is easy and you know, taking a task as too easy is the best way to feck it up. Not sure what happened, didn't quite follow. To me this EL is, particularly on group stage, very uninteresting, as all the big clubs play their reserves there and then only ones that really lineup their best are obscure teams from Eastern Europe and the Spanish and Portuguese teams that are either secure at domestic league (Porto and Benfica) or have nothing to win there (the rest of the Portuguese and all Spanish).

And then Salzburg plays the Austrian league, which is not known of its high quality. I guarantee, even Ajax would score 27 in 6 there.

What on earth has happened to Ajax is beyond me. Of course, respect to Salzburg, there are two sides to a match, but still, at least in the first leg, Ajax were bad in their own right, they didn't really need to have an opponent to be beaten.

I think we all look at Ashley Young wrong.

Lets look at Aaron Lennon instead. For years he has been plying his trade for Spurs down the wing. All he has is speed, as just like Young he doesnt bother to look up before crossing. However, here the story divides. The strikers at spurs are well aware that Lennon only has one trick and they muscle their way onto the pen spot as that is where the ball usually ends up. Its not good looking but is highly effective as the winger and strikers are both aware of the tactic and play of the same hymn sheet.

Now Young and RVP dont have this synergy, not only does Young no longer hit the same spot routinely, but RVP doesnt offer himself in the same position either. I am willing to bet that at Aston Villa when Young was good, Bent was too wander off so was always easy to pick out regardless of whether Young bothered to look or not.

Simple answer, play to the attributes of the team and not what you most want. Young will never look, so stop playing him or get your strikers to fight for the middle of the box.

Sort of. Hernandez is wonderful in that he will always be on the line somewhere between the two CB's. If you are set up to play through ball after through ball then its easy. One has to wonder what would happen if you put Rooney and Kagawa sitting behind Hernandez and just get rid of the wingers. (Added bonus that then you could play 3 CM's and paper over the cracks in that department too.)

But if you played Hernandez then you are playing fast counter attack football and dont require Hernandez to hold up the ball. Let them attack till their defence is too high and bang knock the ball through. Hernandez 1v1 with the keeper.

If thats not working Rooney and Kagawa can just run the ball past the defence whilst Hernandez gets heavily marked by the now out of place CB's.

we know this, but Moyes clearly doesn't, look how often he's had the ball played up to Chica for him to hold it up, and for Chica to be unable to do it. Fergie knew how, and when, to use Hernandez

Up against United's infamously wing based game - something even Fergie struggled to evolve at the start of the 2011/2012 season (see City 6 United 1) and also the need to have the opposition attack. Might end up with an Aston Villa situation where you get figured out. Also in principle Rooney and Kagawa could attack as the inside right and left but it's difficult with a center forward who is only a poacher and has almost zero creativity. Now, RVP instead of Hernandez and I think you've got something really dangerous, he can still run onto those through balls and is much more creative.

I dont think he can run onto the through balls. His waits for the ball to be passed rather than running and hoping for the best. You have to be willing to be offside to be a poacher.

Under Moyes he's spent much of the season without anyone playing him through balls, we have to remember the days when he wasn't playing for Everton. Last season and at Arsenal it was something of a signature for him to connect with a through ball and finish one on one. He doesn't even need to be played through, he runs at the defence very well - check his goal against Swansea at the start of the season when he ran at them and shot from outside the box. He's a much more complete player.

Btw Rooney on inside left and Mata inside right would work lovely too.

Only works if you're allowed to play counter attack football. If you're the bigger side and opponent is happy with a point, then your tactic will look just like what Moyes has been doing at ManU: crosses to the box, and more crosses to the box, but as the game stands still, those are easy to defend against.

I disagree, against weak teams Rooney and Kagawa will have to do a luis Suarez and just charge at goal. They are more than capable of it.

Firstly, now you are having other tactics and then it is Young and Chica to bench, Kagawa and Rooney on field with Mata and RVP. Just like now, bar with Kaga.

And secondly, they hardly are able to do what you ask. None of them is a Suarez. Rooney is a lousy dribbler, he cannot dissolve a well organised defence. Kagawa is better dribbler, but he is a pure counter attack player, he is not made to that either. He suited well to Dortmund's pacey attacks through the middle, but you need to have opponents defensive formation already a bit shattered, players teared far from each other, to really use Kagawa.

      @Evs.

Hope you got a local rate number instead of 0845. Best way to save on these calls is to find a local rate number from the website saynoto0870.

I've stored bank, utility companies and insurances on my phone so it only uses my standard monthly minutes.

Does anyone have one for Sky at all ? I have Halifax and Santander ones. They can be expensive when ringing from a mobile, otherwise...!

You can now play Fantasy Dota.

Even for me thats too far. I am not selecting a team of japanese gamers and then get fecked over by their bedtime curfew.
