Our new regular round-up of the fresh injury worries occurred over the previous weekend arrives this afternoon. We also dig deeper to discover just why a trio of key players only made the bench over Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures:

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger revealed Mesut Ozil was “fit to start” away to Stoke after recovering from a thigh injury. The German was only utilised as a second-half sub, however, as his manager reckons he has played “many many games” and is wary of fatigue playing a part in his record signing’s displays.

Aston Villa
Chris Herd has only just recovered from a hamstring problem but is out of the picture for the foreseeable future after the club released the following statement yesterday:

“The club can confirm that due to personal reasons Chris Herd will be unavailable for selection until further notice. There will be no further comment and we request that Chris’s privacy be respected.”

Cardiff
Craig Noone took to twitter to confirm he missed yesterday’s trip to Tottenham after picking up ”a slight knock”, though is optimistic of a return in time for the weekend clash against Fulham.

Crystal Palace
Glenn Murray was only fit enough for the bench as Palace travelled to Swansea yesterday. The forward made his first start of the season in Gameweek 27 but dropped out of the starting XI after picking up a knock in midweek. Joe Ledley played the full 90 minutes but is set to be assessed before joining up with the Wales squad this week – the midfielder admitted he is struggling with a hip problem and may have to withdraw from international duties. In the last few minutes, Palace have also confirmed Kagisho Dikgacoi has withdrawn from the South Africa squad to face Brazil because of injury.

Everton
Roberto Martinez admitted Romelu Lukaku was only fit enough to be utilised from the bench after he picked up a chest infection prior to Saturday’s visit of West Ham.

Fulham
Brede Hangeland was forced off early in the first period after an accidental clash of heads with team-mate Kieran Richardson and was taken to hospital for scans on Saturday evening. Fulham confirmed he was given the all-clear to return home, though it’s uncertain whether he will join up with the Norway squad in midweek.

Hull
The match commentary from the club’s official website revealed Curtis Davies “had been limping for much of the second half” before he was subbed off towards the end of Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle.

Newcastle
The Magpies back-up keeper Rob Elliot missed Saturday’s home hammering with a knee problem and has withdrawn from this week’s Republic of Ireland squad.

Norwich
Having been handed his first start since Gameweek 23 last weekend, Rickie Van Wolfswinkel was expected to start for Norwich’s trip to Villa but was ruled out of the match against Paul Lambert’s side with a knee problem, Chris Hughton has revealed. Robert Snodgrass lasted just 45 minutes before being withdrawn at the break due to a wrist injury and has subsequently pulled out of the Scotland squad. The Canaries boss elaborated on the trio after yesterday’s defeat:

“Ricky got a whack on his knee in the Tottenham game. He didn’t train at the beginning of the week but we felt generally it would be okay. Unfortunately it was still too sore come Saturday. Leroy does have a hamstring pull. We are still assessing how bad it is and we had to take Robert off at half-time because he felt his wrist when he fell making a tackle towards the end of the first half so he won’t go with Scotland.”

Earlier this afternoon, Hughton’s worries were compounded by the news that Martin Olsson has been forced to withdraw from Sweden’s midweek friendly with Turkey due to a shoulder problem.

Southampton
The Saints’ official twitter stream confirmed second choice keeper Kelvin Davis missed Saturday’s home loss to Liverpool after picking up a knock.

Swansea
Pablo Hernandez lasted just 22 minutes of the first period before being subbed off with yet another hamstring problem. After yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Palace, Garry Monk also confirmed he subbed off both Ashley Williams and Wilfried Bony due to illness:

“We’ve had illness in the camp over the last few days. Bony’s been ill, Ash was sick all last night and Pablo felt his hamstring in the first minute. Ash was ill today and has two badly bruised toes, but it shows his character and the leader that he is that he continues to play.”

Tottenham
After grabbing a goal and assist in Thursday’s Europa League win over Dnipro, Christian Eriksen was expected to be handed a starting role at home to Cardiff yesterday. Unfortunately for Tim Sherwood’s side, the Dane missed out altogether with a back problem, the club’s official twitter stream has confirmed. Zeki Fryers has withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad this morning with an ankle injury.

Let's face it some players are for some unknown medical fact either more succumb to injury or just plain unlucky. I really don't like the fact he pulled up so quickly after his last long layoff and recuperation so will prob omit him from the dream team.

FPL is different though it doesn't really matter as you can off load along with the other 80 per cent for the next game.

To my mind he is a DGW must. If he gets 100 minutes across the two games you could be looking at high double figures. Would wait as long as possible to get him in though with two fixtures for him to break in!

I have been having a nose around SmartyPants’ spreadsheet from the last GW:

    http://fpldiscovery.wordpress.com/2014/03/01/gw-28-transfers-and-team-selection/

Thought I would share the results – if this post goes down well I might repeat it for DGWers.

I reckon that pre-transfers the average top 10k team has max 7 players with a fixture on Saturday – I did not bother assessing which players are rotation/injury risks except in the case of non-playing GKs so this is absolute max. I think that is good information when planning transfers/hits.

Here are the players with more than 5% Ownership last GW:

    Boruc 21%
    Marshall 10%
    Speroni 10%
    Cech 9%
    Ruddy 6%

    Ivanovic 32%
    Fonte 26%
    Cahill 24%
    Ward (CRY) 24%
    Azpilicueta 21%
    Terry 20%
    Shaw 19%
    Gabbidon 16%
    Dawson(TOT) 9%
    Olsson(NOR) 9%
    Whittaker 8%
    Ryan Bennett 8%
    Chambers(SOU) 7%
    Turner(CAR) 6%

    Hazard 93%
    Lallana 73%
    Mata 26%
    Snodgrass 9%
    Eriksen 8%
    Puncheon 8%
    Januzaj 8%
    Adam 6%
    Ince 6%
    Noone 6%

    Adebayor 61%
    Rodriguez 14%

Managed to spot a few differentials here:

Man U: Evra, Rooney and van Persie all had low ownership in the top 10k. However, they are also all getting transferred into a lot of teams this week!

Southampton: Lovren and Lambert. The former has just returned from injury and has very low top 10k ownership. Lambert had 1/3 of JRod’s ownership last GW and is behind his teammate in transfers in at the moment.

Stoke: Their entire defence has very low ownership but just kept a CS against Arsenal. Crouch is also a big differential; with Adam facing a suspension he looks the best bet against a defence that shipped 4 goals at Villa.

Chelsea attack: Only Hazard is represented so if you can pick the right one it could yield a big green!

I am sure you guys can spot some other notable omissions!

16% still have Gabbidon? Dann could be decent as far as differentials go, possible to get some of those sweet CB BPs in low-scoring games.

How much short of Adebayor to Aguero are you? I'd use free transfers to create funds to get him in. Mertesacker, Wilshere, Williams and maybe Walker would be the guys I'd be looking to make cheaper to free up funds.

he was good for a while a couple of seasons back when he was 4.5 and everyone was injured. I had him then. Then the troll came out, he was ruled out for the last game of the season as he apparently needed surgery, so loads benched/sold him. Lo and behold he started, played 90 and kept a cleanie. He has been trolling ever since

Arsenal have no gw29 fixture, and their schedule only gets more difficult.

If you're going to lose the FT, I'd swap him out, yeah.
If you can keep the FT, and losing 0.1m doesn't endanger your transfer plans, you should wait and do 2FT's next week.

    Hazard(vc), Mata, Januzaj, *Nolan, *Sterling
    van Persie(c), Adebayor

This weekends FA cup games are:
    Arsenal v Everton
    Hull v Sunderland
    Man city v Wigan

How will these affect the fixture schedule, ie would a draw put DGW fixtures into doubt?

      arsenal/everton - neither have a DGW31
hull v sunderland - both have a DGW31 - will it affect it? feck knows.
      city v wigan - won't be a draw!

Arsenal and everton have fixtures without dates but I see your point.

What I mean is if Hull Sunderland had to be replayed during DGW, that could mean no DGW for them, and say Liverpool and West ham!

this is a stoke fan about the shawcross/ramsey leg break:

"Shawcross is the player in possession of the ball and it's Ramsey who chalenges him. A bad challenge by Ramsey that ended up with him breaking his own leg. Rescind the red card."

And they're saying that they'll "violently dispute / challenge it." I'm sorry, but I find that absolutely disgusting. It's as bad as what Adam did himself. Saw it on Sky sports News along with the Pardew incident earlier. Both horrible, disgraceful incidents. Imagine the young kids there with their Fathers at those matches and taking all that in. Shocking....

          Pretty much, this.

Crimea is the area of Ukraine they've entered, which used to belong to Russia and is home to many ethnic Russians (and close to Russian military base in Crimea) though legally a part of Ukraine.

These are countries basing their defence on nuclear weapons. War between them would not ask much of people's support after a short while.

With Putin in charge and some scarily patriotic men in high positions it wouldn't take much to make a retaliatory strike. Regardless of how the conventional war is progressing.

Very true but that won't happen of course. Any country knows that launching nukes towards other nuke capable countries ends in no winners.

Fortunately. You know that when game theorists were introduced in Pentagon in I think 60's, maybe late 50's, their first question was "why haven't you already launched the nuclear missiles?" Their theory was so raw that it seemed to them that the only to win was to shoot first. Thank goodness people in charge were not game theorists.

Nothing to do with the rest of the world? Of course it has! This is all about Ukraine's freedom to be part of Europe: can they make that choice. That's also why Poland is calling NATO emergency meeting. And then there's the fact that UK and USA have guaranteed Ukraine's integrity when Ukraine agreed to give up their nuclear power (I recall was 5th greatest in world, greater than UK, possibly even than France).

Okay. I thought it might have been 4th before France but after China, but even bigger than China, okay, wow!

Anyway, you see what I'm talking about. Russia would be doing nothing if Ukraine had these missiles. They agreed to give up their nuclear warfare for common good (they are kind of dangerous, you know), in condition that their integrity is guaranteed. It concerns USA and UK now, because they gave those guarantees. And if they do nothing, it is not only a disgrace and treason, it will mean the death of tens of thousands of people in Ukraine, and revelation to the rest of the world that they should not be so naive to trust the promises of the western leaders.

This situation is very very serious. Dont see an easy ay out. and lets hope China does not get involved pro-russia.

58% of gas consumed in ikraine is imported from Russia.
66% of Russian gas exported to the EU goes thru Ukraine
Crimea is in fact strategic for russia naval base.

Yes. What people in west fail to see is that this is not just about Putin showing off, this is all about his old time imperial geopolitics. Ukraine is massively important to Putin, so he reacted when it slipped from his order. He will not give a rat's arse about all protests or image-losses or rubble diving or diplomatic hazards or anything, because in his view this is materially so darn important. And the Ukrainians are the once to suffer from this.

Indeed, it's difficult to see an easy way out, but then there are still the difficult ways that may be easier to see and maybe one of them would be worth taking. I mean, if we always go for an easy way, and there is none, then we just won't get out.

My take is Ukrainians are clamouring for a new government and joining the EU. There's been an uprising against the current government who was essentially a Russian puppet government and an interim government has been set up. Russian-Ukrainians don't want that to happen, are asking Russia to help them, Russia are willingly obliging as they don't want the Ukraine moving away from them (and in my opinion just want to get the Ukraine back with Russia)

Very tough really, Ukraine see it as Russia invading them and the pro Europe crowd certainly don't want to make any concessions for the Russians. And, while majority may be Russians, there are the minority that must be considered too!

Also worth noting that there was virtually no people at all in any parts of Ukraine or Crimea who supported the president in his last days when he was using armed forces against demonstrators. And Russia still supports him and wants him in power in Ukraine. It's quite clear that Russia didn't just jump into this Crimean crisis, but caused it.

Problem is China will get involved and they could buy mercenaries/assault teams 100 times the size that the US did for Iraq AKA the West would get battered. If China turned their back on Russia then this situation would be far less scary.
