The Sun launched its new World Cup warm-up game earlier today. “Road to Rio” is free to play for all registered Dream Team managers, with a £15,000 prize pot on offer. If you don’t have a team registered for the main 2013-14 Dream Team Game, you can still qualify by purchasing the Game Premium-In-Play packages prior to the closing date on Saturday March 15.

Running alongside the normal Dream Team offering, this game uses all the same rules aside from the player list, which is custom built to include only those players in contention for the World Cup, complete with new player prices.

If, like me, you’ve suffered a long string of ill-timed injuries this season, Road to Rio offers a much-needed opportunity to start from scratch and bid for some belated Dream Team glory, with a £10,000 winner’s prize on offer.

Having backed the likes of Theo Walcott, Sergio Aguero and Philippe Coutinho in my starting squad, not to mention the stalling Robin van Persie, my campaign suffered a false start and never really recovered. Typically, even when granted a chance to tinker in the Transfer Windows, I’ve managed to target the next major injury with uncanny accuracy. I’ve taken it on the chin but it’s further proof that a run of cruel setbacks can scupper your Dream Team ambitions, making multiple lineups almost a necessity if you want to avoid riding your luck.

Road to Rio arrives to provide the perfect antidote, reviving our end of season interest. With a new player list, there’s fresh incentive to assess the data and search out some undervalued gems and, with one team per entry, there’s an even playing field competing for prizes.

You can click here to register your new team and get started. Below, we’ve compiled an FAQ on the game and how it works.

In the next week we’ll bring you our Road to Rio starting XI to provide you some tips on compiling your Samba-themed teamsheet.

What’s Road to Rio?
It’s the Sun Dream Team’s World Cup warm-up tournament, featuring a brand new player list, with new values. It runs according to the regular Dream Team rules, with scoring starting on the weekend of March 15 until the end of the season.

What’s in it for me?
There’s a prize pool of £15,000 on offer, with £10,000 going to the winner and the rest of the cash split amongst the five teams that follow.

1st £10,000
2nd £2,500
3rd £1,000
4th £750
5th £500
6th £250

How do I get involved?
If you’re already registered for Dream Team then you’ll be given your free Road to Rio entry. Entries are limited to one team per person. Click here for details.

If you’re yet to register for Dream Team and are looking for a Premium-In-Play package, simply click here to get involved. You will then be eligible for the Road to Rio.

All entries must be in by the first kick-off on March 15 to be included.

How does my team score points?
The rules for Road to Rio are identical to the main Dream Team game so points are earned from Premier League matches, along with FA Cup, Champions League and the Europa League. For a full guide to the Dream Team rules, click here for our guide.

Can I enter more than one team?
Not for Road to Rio. Entry is limited to one team per person so you’ll need to do what you can to avoid the injury-prone, red card magnets and those who often suffer from rotation.

Can I make transfers?
Nope, this is a fire and forget game. Your initial starting XI will take you through from now until the end of the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Shezz*
    Collins*, Coleman*, Cahill
    Hazard, Yaya*, Sterling*, Mata*
    Suarez*, Sturridge*, Aguero*

    Subs: Davies, Azpi, Ward, Coleback

    No hits taken.

Would you stick or bring in another double for a hit? Maybe Kompany for Cahill?

Don't need to due to WC but I think each hit needs to be considered case by case ie will the new player outscore the old player by more than 4pts over the DGW and following weeks that you intend to have them? Don't worry about the overall hit total

  12. Is Aguero Essential for GW31

    Is Aguero essential for GW31?

I've made my mind up that I'll get Remy instead of him, here's why...

    Aguero
    + High-scoring team
    + Proven FPL player
    + Fixtures
    + On penalties
    + Plays Hull in GW30
    + Explosive potential
    - Attacking points shared between more players
    - Injury prone
    - Very unlikely to play 180 mins
    - Expensive
    - Arsenal away in GW32

    Remy
+ Focal point of team's attack
+ In form, scored in last 2 games
    + Fixtures (both at home)
+ Likely to play 180 mins (won't be rotated)
    + On penalties
    + Plays Fulham in GW30
+ Cheaper (allows upgrades to rest of team)
    + Consistent (see goals/game ratio)
    - Newcastle score less goals than City
    - Palace + Everton are quite solid defensively

The fact that Aguero isn't the standout captaincy option in GW31 is one of the reasons I won't get him - in other words, I'll be less hurt if he does well since most people will be captaining a Liverpool striker.

My plan is to get Remy in next week as he plays Fulham, but I'll definitely get Aguero soon after GW31 as I think he'll be pretty much essential for the later DGWs as the title race gets more intense and City won't have the distractions of the UCL.

Aguero's fitness should be your only concern, fixtures don't faze him at all he scores against everyone and is capable of a big haul against anyone tbh. I learnt that the hard way 🙁

Yep I agree with that, I just think Remy has the potential to do as well as him, if not better, over GW30+31. Also the 4m (?) price difference will allow an extra big hitter in defence or midfield.

Remy plays Fulham too, so surely he's in with a chance of a haul 🙂 but yeah, I'm hoping Magath tightens up the defence a bit, and I'm pretty certain they'll park the bus at the Etihad, whereas when they're home to Newcastle they'll be more offensive, leaving holes for Remy to exploit.

Innsie's reasong appears well founded - it really depends on Agueros game time. He may only play few minutes against Fulham. On the other hand, you forgot to consider his value will be at least 12.5 come GW31, so it will be more exspensive to bring him in after that.

Guys I was just thinking about the whole rotation thing with Aguero over the DGWs. Who cares if he only plays 60 mins against Fulham. He is capable to score a hat trick against any team in the first 15 mins of a match. Just saying......

And on top of the price rise, probably 2 FTs (or a hit) will be required to downgrade somewhere in order to upgrade Remy to Aguero soon after GW31, so you have to be hoping no injuries or suspensions scupper those planned transfers.

Remy just isn't a great option IMO. Before the last 2 and the suspension, hadn't he scored something like once since Boxing Day? I think people are getting a bit overexcited about that 1-4 game at the weekend. In general, Newcastle are toothless post-Cabaye.

City, on the other hand, have an irresistable attack when Aguero is fit. They could quite conceivably score 6 at home to Fulham. I can't see Newcastle getting that over the 3 games.

Guys I was just thinking about the whole rotation thing with Aguero over the DGWs. Who cares if he only plays 60 mins against Fulham. He is capable to score a hat trick against any team in the first 15 mins of a match. Just saying....

I am contradicting myself now guys. I might just get Yaya and get Kun in future DGWs

Could be good, but also pricey.

I'm guessing your considering Baines to go with Coleman?

Against the run of form, maybe having 2 or 3 United players before the double isn't too bad given their fixtures post the dgw.

    What so people think?

I m getting rid of RVP after 29. Coz I think Yaya,Baines ,Suarez,Sturridge & Hazard give better return of the investment.I can't invest on all of them with RVP.

I have 2 FT's this week. Currently only fielding 6. Which 2 out of these would you sell. 0.8 million in the bank?
Koscielny, Clyne, Gerrard, Cazorla, Bony, Chester.

SAS on the bench and I'm not selling either.
I was initially thinking of doing Caz and Kosc to Evra and Mata but this Arsenal DGW being announced has made me reconsider.

Even though Southampton have a fixture this week and Clyne may get off the bench and get an assist or something?
Although Clyne to Evans does sound good. You think Evans is nailed on?

In ABD and FAF, they have 2 guys who can save a test from pretty much any position!
They've done it before against Australia and recently against India.

I agree that those 2 and Duminy could do it. Comparing those attacks to the one Australia have now seems silly though. Johnson in career best form.
