With they symptoms of double Gameweek fever in full effect, the majority of hot topics continued to focus on the potentially lucrative set of fixtures in Gameweek 31. However, there were still plenty of other pursuits to occupy us, most notably a controversial assist, mini-league prizes and an alphabetically challenging five-a-side tournament. We revisit these discussions and take a look at the latest activity in our community competitions, with a focus this week on those dedicated to the Fantasy Premier League’s most improved managers.

The Hottest Topics

We couldn’t let the week go by without taking another look at the fall-out from its most controversial incident – namely the belatedly awarded Luis Suarez assist.

To recap, on Sunday night, Suarez’s assist for Rafael’s handball in Liverpool’s win at United was not credited by the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), leaving many of those who captained the Uruguayan in a distraught state as they retired for the evening. However, come the morning, the FPL reviewed the situation and, despite announcing confirmed scores on Sunday night, addressed the issue by mid-morning. Andy’s breakdown, just hours after the whistle at Old Trafford, offered a superb explanation as to the reasoning behind the decision – pure consistency. His account of all the assists given for handballs so far this season proved one of the week’s most popular posts, not least among Suarez’ captainers.

While all bets are now off on Gameweek 31, we just had to acknowledge Fortunesalwayshiding’s extraordinary analysis of Newcastle’s Paul Dummett from earlier in the week. Regardless of whether the information will be of use to us from this point on, the sheer effort and the fact that it’s unlikely that the unfashionable Dummett has ever had so much attention, warrants us paying it some further kudos.

Bandwagons have been inevitable whilst in the grip of a double Gameweek, so Scratch’s hot topic in midweek offered a timely and, as it happened, a rather prophetic warning on jumping eagerly on the top targets from the week. He advised us all to show caution when assessing David Silva following his haul at Hull and, as it turned out, one match and a single assist into Gameweek 31, there will be more than a few wondering if their investment was a wise one. There was certainly some sound logic on show – wise words ahead of the Gameweek 34 doubles, perhaps.

Elsewhere there was some concerted effort to wean the community off the topic of Gameweek 31: The Tinkerman was on hand to look ahead to the rest of the season, and in particular the effect that teams with little motivation could have on the final Premier League table. His analysis of these potential mid-table minnows, such as Newcastle, Stoke and Aston Villa, took a look at the sides due to meet them during the run in. He ponders whether they could prove to be pushovers when pitted against teams fighting relegation or pushing for a place in Europe.

Assessing such long-term issues can prove crucial to mini-league glory and Agbonlahorse took the opportunity this week to find out a bit more about the community’s competitions and, in particular, the prizes at stake. For Kingpin, mini league victory is worth a whopping £700, although he faces a tough climb to victory as going into Gameweek 31 he was ranked 100 out of 200 contenders. Whitman 2013 is in better Fantasy Football health, currently in first place in his mini-league, which awards a wallet-splitting £625 to the winner.

To underline just how we craved double Gameweek distraction, this week’s busiest hot topic was Funkyav’s alphabetical five-a-side game, which demanded that we construct teams of footballers using the first two letters of their surname. This resulted in over 120 replies at the time of writing.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a Sunday night round-up without another discussion of the FPL ruleset. This week it was Sinik’s turn to canvas opinion, suggesting that extra points be thrown our way depending on a player’s position. Are the FPL testing the water with the Ultimate FPL rules?

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham Hotspurs continues to provide inspiration to all those with a lowly rank. He remains in first place in HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million+ Club, for teams with an overall rank below two million in the first five Gameweeks. Going into Gameweek 31, he had an impressive overall rank of 2,189. There are seven teams now in the top 100,000 and Bales of Fury has also joined Teltzham Hotspurs in the top 10,000.

There are more ascending heroes in Kings of Lyon’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? league, for those outside the top 1,000,000 at the Gameweek 8 mark. Going into Gameweek 31, 60 of the 65 entrants are now within the top 1,000,000 and 16 players, including Kings of Lyon, were in the top 100,000. Top of the league is Elizabeth Genius who, with a rank of 8,961, is the first to breach the top 10,000.

In AZ’s Non Qualifiers Cup, for those who failed to qualify for our own Paddy Power cups, AH67 was the highest scorer during Gameweek 30’s round, with a tally of 69. JameswestPot, Danny Rex25, King of burgers, Hagop, Lazarus and OcProdigy all went into Gameweek 31 having won all three of their group matches.

In TorresMagic‘s leagues, 54 remain in his Last Man Standing competition with The Elite 64 draw made once Gameweek 31 is complete.

Finally, the Fantasy Football Scout’s contributors and moderators league welcomed a new leader after Gameweek 30, with Spencer snatching top spot from Gaz Downright by a slender three points. Sadly for Mark, the ScoutCast team overtook him again tonight thanks to Adam Lallana’s goal.

I'd say no... Matic will always start in central midfield and be paired with one of Luiz, Lampard or even Mikel during Ramires' suspension.

Anyone have any thoughts on Matic? Granted he is a DM, and normally not a compelling fantasy asset. But the way he dinked those 2 balls over from deep was Petit-esque circa 1997-98... he has that assist potential in a way others in that position don't

    Getting a good start

What is the secret to getting a good start each season? Instinct? Luck? Hits? The first 10GWs can help build a solid foundation in which to base your season upon. How then, can you achieve this?

Yaya Toure and Aaron Ramsey this year have shown up a potential theory. Both players have been labelled as 'casual' player buys despite their form being unrelenting, whilst fit and on the field. Those who have risked going without, have, in the majority of cases, severely paid the price.

The theory then, should you always hold players with a 1,000,000+ ownership even if you don't believe they will produce? There are currently five players hitting this threshold [Suarez, Yaya, Hazard, Coleman, Sturridge] and hat-tricks for the former two just this week have shown the perils of going without.

Fast-forward to a week before the new season, do you go with instinct or ownership? I, for one, will be changing tactics to the latter.

There's a theory that suggests don't get too hung up on hits in the first few weeks - it might cost you a few points, but getting the in-form players in early and rapidly increasing tv helps off set that.

I guess doing hits early would really benefit you if you feel that the players you entered on GW1 would be having a low time at the start. I remember on Marks preamble that one of the HOF here and him have started pretty much the same and the guy took a -8 and Mark thought it was a rubbish decision to take fast forward now the guy who took the -8 is way up Mark's reach.

Just to show that in order to have a good start you would need instinct to consider the players and take those hits and be lucky.

At the start of the season I aim to always go with my gut. If I just got the highest owned players I can only expect an ordinary start. Its not a bad idea in my mind, to ignore ownership and just get in players you think will bring home the points. If a few low ownership players do well then you could get off to a very good start. I guess this is the more aggressive approach.

It's a great post but I think the path to early success is fixtures and luck. Ownership is a good indicator for price rises mainly - potential for TV gain is diminished of you go for the highly owned players.

I took a lot of hits in the first 10GWs, and haven't really taken many since then in order to get on the bandwagons and increase TV. I think next season I'll play my WC very early (like GW5 or 6) so that I don't have to take all those hits early in the season.

I like this strategy too. It will be debated at great length early next season and there will be many examples to both argue against and back up the theory but I much prefer this method to the one that waits for the DGW. You still have to get it right, though - a lot of seasons this year were destroyed by players taking an early WC.

Yes, defiantly. I'm 50k and only had Ramsey a few gameweeks and just got Yaya in two gws ago. Next season I'm jumping on the early bandwagons. Reducing the differential in your team for the first few gws is a important strategy.

i think al things like this are just too hard to then apply to the future, they're all retrospective. you jump aboard what you think is the new ramsey and yaya and they both flop. i think the answer is just be open to buying anyone. casual is largely just a tag from jealous non owners, yeah you can get fortunate with some buys, each one is like 1 of 100 decisions over a season though, i think peple are allowed to luck out on some, it's up to you to get them on the other 99

Be proactive, admit your views are wrong and take hits early to get it right and use your wildcard within the first 12 weeks but not on the week surrounding an international break.

As an Arsenal fan I quite simply could't believe what I was seeing from Ramsey and I didn't get on until later because I didn't think it would last, I didn't think he was good enough.

I didn't think Ozil would hit the ground running because players normally take time to adjust, he hit the ground running then faded.

The strongest piece of advice would be to not let your opinion of a player get in the way of what he is producing. Footballers are people and people are unpredictable beings so don't lock an opinion down it can change extremely quickly and against the odds.

As for Yaya nobody knew he could take amazing free kicks, nobody could possibly conserve he could get 5 free kicks from open play in the first 15 odd game weeks of the season (it took snodgrass over 30 to get 5 free kicks last season the leagues highest).

To conclude just a reminder suarez was suspended for the first 8 games, hazard struggled to produce in the first 10, coleman was priced at 5.0 so was an auto pick, sturridge was under an injury cloud.

Anyone braving it with just Sturridge at the moment?

But what to do, find funds to get SS or straight up transfer Sturridge for Suarez?

    Surely others have this problem.

Don't think so. Hardly anyone has Oscar in the top 10K for a reason. Hazard is plenty. Would only work with a DGW.

Fonte, Nolan, Dzeko ==> Yaya Toure, Anichebe and a scrub

Would cost me -8 but I am no longer playing Fonte (3 man backline) so it basically is:

Nolan, Dzeko ==> Yaya Toure, Anichebe

Yes, it is -8, but over the last weeks that -8 averaged out should pay off? Trying to hold on to the lead in my ML (+70 right now) - Thanks!

            Before:

            Adrian, Boruc
            Coleman, Zabaleta, Koscielny, Vlaar, Fonte
            Silva, Gerrard, Nolan, Hazard,Jedinak
            Suarez, Giroud, Dzeko

            After:

            Adrian, Boruc
            Coleman, Zabaleta, Koscielny, Vlaar, SCRUB
Silva, Gerrard, Hazard, Yaya Toure, Jedinak
            Suarez, Giroud, Anichebe

I appreciate you taking the time to look!

My thinking is I want to "hold on" to my lead so going with "template" players is a safe way to go? My front line is a weak point but I do think I can get Sturidge or Rooney

Aspirations. Knew it was a gamble but Fulham home looked tempting.

Had to mix it up in FPL as chasing and in sky I actually stood a chance of winning if I did something special (as had transfers) gamble couldn't have gone worse

How many Gameweek ranks of 1million or worse have you had and what's your current overall rank?

Yes, there's obviously a correlation between the two but I reckon the number of blowouts you have is a pretty good indicator of roughly how you are placed. It supports the adage that consistency is key.

The top 10 overall average four, 1mill or worse gameweek ranks.
