With they symptoms of double Gameweek fever in full effect, the majority of hot topics continued to focus on the potentially lucrative set of fixtures in Gameweek 31. However, there were still plenty of other pursuits to occupy us, most notably a controversial assist, mini-league prizes and an alphabetically challenging five-a-side tournament. We revisit these discussions and take a look at the latest activity in our community competitions, with a focus this week on those dedicated to the Fantasy Premier League’s most improved managers.

The Hottest Topics

We couldn’t let the week go by without taking another look at the fall-out from its most controversial incident – namely the belatedly awarded Luis Suarez assist.

To recap, on Sunday night, Suarez’s assist for Rafael’s handball in Liverpool’s win at United was not credited by the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), leaving many of those who captained the Uruguayan in a distraught state as they retired for the evening. However, come the morning, the FPL reviewed the situation and, despite announcing confirmed scores on Sunday night, addressed the issue by mid-morning. Andy’s breakdown, just hours after the whistle at Old Trafford, offered a superb explanation as to the reasoning behind the decision – pure consistency. His account of all the assists given for handballs so far this season proved one of the week’s most popular posts, not least among Suarez’ captainers.

While all bets are now off on Gameweek 31, we just had to acknowledge Fortunesalwayshiding’s extraordinary analysis of Newcastle’s Paul Dummett from earlier in the week. Regardless of whether the information will be of use to us from this point on, the sheer effort and the fact that it’s unlikely that the unfashionable Dummett has ever had so much attention, warrants us paying it some further kudos.

Bandwagons have been inevitable whilst in the grip of a double Gameweek, so Scratch’s hot topic in midweek offered a timely and, as it happened, a rather prophetic warning on jumping eagerly on the top targets from the week. He advised us all to show caution when assessing David Silva following his haul at Hull and, as it turned out, one match and a single assist into Gameweek 31, there will be more than a few wondering if their investment was a wise one. There was certainly some sound logic on show – wise words ahead of the Gameweek 34 doubles, perhaps.

Elsewhere there was some concerted effort to wean the community off the topic of Gameweek 31: The Tinkerman was on hand to look ahead to the rest of the season, and in particular the effect that teams with little motivation could have on the final Premier League table. His analysis of these potential mid-table minnows, such as Newcastle, Stoke and Aston Villa, took a look at the sides due to meet them during the run in. He ponders whether they could prove to be pushovers when pitted against teams fighting relegation or pushing for a place in Europe.

Assessing such long-term issues can prove crucial to mini-league glory and Agbonlahorse took the opportunity this week to find out a bit more about the community’s competitions and, in particular, the prizes at stake. For Kingpin, mini league victory is worth a whopping £700, although he faces a tough climb to victory as going into Gameweek 31 he was ranked 100 out of 200 contenders. Whitman 2013 is in better Fantasy Football health, currently in first place in his mini-league, which awards a wallet-splitting £625 to the winner.

To underline just how we craved double Gameweek distraction, this week’s busiest hot topic was Funkyav’s alphabetical five-a-side game, which demanded that we construct teams of footballers using the first two letters of their surname. This resulted in over 120 replies at the time of writing.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a Sunday night round-up without another discussion of the FPL ruleset. This week it was Sinik’s turn to canvas opinion, suggesting that extra points be thrown our way depending on a player’s position. Are the FPL testing the water with the Ultimate FPL rules?

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham Hotspurs continues to provide inspiration to all those with a lowly rank. He remains in first place in HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million+ Club, for teams with an overall rank below two million in the first five Gameweeks. Going into Gameweek 31, he had an impressive overall rank of 2,189. There are seven teams now in the top 100,000 and Bales of Fury has also joined Teltzham Hotspurs in the top 10,000.

There are more ascending heroes in Kings of Lyon’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? league, for those outside the top 1,000,000 at the Gameweek 8 mark. Going into Gameweek 31, 60 of the 65 entrants are now within the top 1,000,000 and 16 players, including Kings of Lyon, were in the top 100,000. Top of the league is Elizabeth Genius who, with a rank of 8,961, is the first to breach the top 10,000.

In AZ’s Non Qualifiers Cup, for those who failed to qualify for our own Paddy Power cups, AH67 was the highest scorer during Gameweek 30’s round, with a tally of 69. JameswestPot, Danny Rex25, King of burgers, Hagop, Lazarus and OcProdigy all went into Gameweek 31 having won all three of their group matches.

In TorresMagic‘s leagues, 54 remain in his Last Man Standing competition with The Elite 64 draw made once Gameweek 31 is complete.

Finally, the Fantasy Football Scout’s contributors and moderators league welcomed a new leader after Gameweek 30, with Spencer snatching top spot from Gaz Downright by a slender three points. Sadly for Mark, the ScoutCast team overtook him again tonight thanks to Adam Lallana’s goal.

    Morning lads,

What would do with this team ? 1ft and 4.3 to spend

    Mannone,
    Baines, Evra, Chester,
    Mirallas, Mata, Nasri, Sterling,
    Suarez, Lukaku, Sturridge,

    Davis, Ward, Burner, Gnabry

I could save a transfer this week then doing

    Evra : Kolarov
    Lukaku : Aguero

I'd probably save, or do Mata -> Yaya. I'm not so sure about ditching Lukaku as he has a double coming up, maybe better to brave it without Sturridge for a few weeks... I think I'd want Rooney + Aguero alongside Suarez for the run-in.

Asked a few times if i should replace Boruc for someone with a double gw for a hit. Pretty much everyone said yes. Decided not to do it since i already had taken a hit and kinda fancied Artur to keep a cleanie against Tot. Didn't quite keep a clean sheet but decided to hand me points with a cheeky assist. Chuffed!! 😀

Moyes knew him very well , why did he bring him when he couldn't ' fit ' him in ?
Granted he got injured but I thought he would use him in a DM roll and make use of his Baulk at corners frees etc ,
Panic at a cost of 27m ? Clearly now ,

I would loose too much money if I sell Suarez or Studge. I may play it safe and bring Kompany/Zab or Nasri to triple up the midfield

I've got Dann & Ward (no idea how I ended up with both, but figured I might as well keep with the DGW coming), Baines, Lukaku, Yaya, Silva, AJ, Mannone. That's what, 8? Not sure if there's anyone else worth getting, Aguero if he's fit I guess.

For GW 34 how many players that play twice should you aim to have?

I'm currently on 7, and may plan on getting in Aguero and another everton player. Is this wise? Or should it just be treat as a normal GW? Cheers 🙂

What would you do with this team?

    Mannone - Boruc
    Goalman - Gaines - Ward - Azpili - Williamson
    Yaya - Silva - Gerrard - Nolan - AJ
    SLS

    0.0 itb, 1 FT.

    Thinking of doing one of:

Silva/Gerrard -> Hazard.. with Nolan/AJ -> Mutch to fund it.

Or I could also get in Terry for one of my Everton full backs..

What do you think? Who would you ship out of:

    AJ or Nolan?
    Gerrard or Silva?
    Baines or Coleman?

I fancy Chelsea at Palace, not sure if I want to double up on their defence yet so Baines can stay.

Thinking about giving AJ one more week but I really just don't trust him to deliver regardless of fixtures. Not sure if Nolan is any better though.

Gerrard vs Silva I'm not sure if I should wait a week to see how things go or get in Hazard this week and hope he flat track bullies Palace. What would you do HVT? 🙂

You gotta keep Silva for 34 , so I would ditch Gerrard BUT not for a hit ,
Spurs at home is a good fixture for SG , IMHO I would save to following week barring injuries etc , I think Palace may actually defend a little better than Arsenal tbh.

Yeah I'd say you're right about Silva vs Gerrard, Silva having 2 more GWs is a massive factor.

I'd expect Palace at home to be a sturdy enough defence and they're not as hot and cold as Arsenal but still, Hazard could explode at any time and I'm terrified not having him for the first time all season 😛

I too ditched Hazzard but I'm chasing whereas your consoladating a very good finish , it might be no harm to get him back but not for a hit - that hit could easily affect your rank at this tight stage IMHO.

What's the situation with Evra, does anyone know? Did he just get a rest against West Ham to allow Buttner to get some game time before the Bayern match or is it likely to be a permanent thing?

I honestly think his days are numbered..or could be..One game against Wham isn't enough to prepare for Bayern..nowhere near. And IF he does ok against Bayern (big if) why would Moyes drop him for Evra, if Evra is leaving in the summer ?...My guess is Evra plays tonight and then that could be game over...depending on results. Apart from anything else he's looked far from impressive of late.

How else can he bring Buttner up to speed ?..he needs to play alongside the players he's going to be playing with in the Bayern match, he has to be capable of dealing with Robben and co...or at least try...Sitting on the bench won't help.

Yeah it would...so that's why I think he'll split the gametime between the City/Villa game...Buttner played at the weekend and so it's a big ask to play the City game so close to it,..and Moyes might prefer the experience of Evra anyway...Then Buttner for Villa to keep sharpening him up......Otherwise he will have had just one game against Wham in readiness for Bayern.

I suppose that's true, so you plan on playing that front 7 week in week out for the foreseeable future?

I'd still rather have Mutch on the bench than Januzaj but only if there are no other transfers you can make.. Or you could save the transfer for a week too if you want to play it patiently. You have a great team so you can afford that luxury 🙂

Currently leaning towards Gerrard and Nolan out but probably going to wait a week 🙂

He will haunt me all 6 points worth, unless Bardsley, who actually has a game left, will score against Pool in which case I'm fine.

Frankly, I would only have played Cahill had I not got in Zaba, so Bardsley was playing in any case and Zaba is outscoring Cahill.

Still, the point remains, I don't think my DGW has been particularly sweet, yet I stand 22 points above you, so I wonder how come you think your points are respectable. I disrespect them for all my 110 points and another 10 DGWrs to go worth! 😀

    - Don't own Yaya
    - Don't own Sturridge
    - Own Dzeko
    - Own Koscielny
    - Own Sterling & Gerrard
    - Played Vlaar

My mini league challenge is over, my ranking has taken a significant plummet after weeks of progression.......basically my whole season has been killed by two terrible weeks, this DGW and the GW 5 debacle (when I owned RVP, Walcott, Benteke and captain Lampard took a ride on the pine giving me a massive 18 points total).

Same. It's perfect they've got two more games before an awesome run in though, a great time to get a differential and potentially a midfield bargain too.

haha I know, Brilliant. Some absolutely class words come out the mouths of Arsenal people sometimes :). They've got to eat their shredded wheat earlier in the morning i think!

I mean if you say something like that, you just get the feeling that they're not taking it seriously enough? It's a 6-0 loss, to one of the fiercest local rivals as well as title rivals...

Good point Dogba. Arsenal always have a poor point in the season though don't they. I reckon they'll bounce back fairly soon.

Maybe. FPL-wise though they've got no DGW, so hard to get any attention. I might go with Ramsey from GW35 though if fit, hard to get anything better at that price.

True, true. If he'd not been injured you'd have to imagine Arsenal would still be right up there.

This season has been an absolute grind. Still paying the price for overlooking Yaya & Ramsey early and not paying any attention to TV. Now on a red arrow because of a total of 0 points between 3 DGW defenders so far 😮

I know the feeling mate! being stubborn this season has bit me. Yayas stats are awful but yet he still keep on bloody scoring.

I don't own him, but I'd look at replacing with a DGW midfielder before GW34. Not a rush at all though 😮

I am keeping him... Need to get rid of Koscielny and Giroud as soon as possible... But I dearly hope that Kosc plays and keeps a clean sheet against Swansea and Giroud scores at least double figures in that game...

On the other hand, Silva and Hazard are also in a title race, Silva has 2 more fixtures than him and both will be playing further up the pitch.

(I know most already have Hazard with Gerrard though)

I see what you mean Irish. I prefer him to Silva because he's been consistent all season and to consider getting rid after one poor return would be suicidal in fpl. He'll come good.

Ideally though: Yaya Hazard Gerrard Silva Mutch would be sweet for the run in.

I could have that midfield with SLS up front but I'd have to do Baines -> 5.4
