Group E is arguably the most unappetising group from a spectator point-of-view due to the fact that France and Switzerland are overwhelming favourites to get out of it. However, this means that it may be a source of Fantasy Football riches. The French team has the potential to go deep into the tournament if they click, while the Swiss are dark horses as they are one of the best units around. Ecuador and Honduras are both rank-outsiders due to their leaky defences, and fairly lacklustre attacks.
France
Predicted Starting XI:
Lloris
Debuchy Sakho Varane Evra
Pogba Matuidi Cabaye
Valbuena Benzema Griezmann
Qualification Stats:
Most Starts: Hugo Lloris, Franck Ribery (10), Patrice Evra (8), Karim Benzema, Blaise Matuidi (7) Mathieu Valbuena, Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, Laurent Koscielny (6), Mamadou Sakho, Yohan Cabaye (5)
Most Goals: Franck Ribery (5), Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud (2)
Most Assists: Franck Ribery, Mathieu Valbuena (5), Karim Benzema (2)
My Picks:
Lloris – Excellent goalkeeper, capable of making lots of saves. Add to that the fact that he is nailed on and France’s potential for clean sheets and it’s easy to see why many people already have him in their team.
Debuchy – Although he is not completely nailed on, it appears that he has the edge over Bacary Sagna in the race for the right-back spot. He also has assist potential and is a budget option.
Pogba – This young man is already one of the best central midfielders in the world, and his eye for goal and ability to play the final ball make him an appealing option.
Valbuena – The Marsielle midfielder has become the heartbeat of this French team, and no doubt will be central to much of France’s forward play. His assist potential is huge, and he is fairly cheap too. However, his lack of goals may keep some away.
Griezmann – The Real Sociedad winger could be one of the big surprises of the tournament, largely due to the opening left by Franck Ribery’s absence. This guy has a huge eye for goal, as evidenced by his 16 goals in La Liga last season. This one is a bit of a punt, however, due to his inexperience at this level, though he is a budget option and could potentially be classified as a midfielder in the McDonald’s game. It is, however, widely speculated that Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud will lead the line with Benzema moved out wide left. This would leave Griezmann as an impact sub at best.
Benzema – The Real Madrid man finally found the back of the net consistently for his club this season, and will be France’s main goal threat in Brazil. Possessing a combination of skill, pace and strength, the striker could prove very hard to deal with and looks poised to score his first goal for Les Bleus in a major tournament.
Switzerland
Predicted Starting XI:
Benaglio
Lichtsteiner von Bergen Schar Rodriguez
Inler Behrami
Shaqiri Xhaka Stocker
Drmic
Qualification Stats:
Most Starts: Steve Von Bergen, Ricardo Rodriguez, Gokhan Inler, Valon Behrami, Xherdan Shaqiri (9), Diego Benaglio, Stephan Lichsteiner, Granit Xhaka (8), Valentin Stocker (6)
Most Goals: Fabian Schar (3), Stephan Lichsteiner, Gokhan Inler, Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, Mario Gavranovic (2)
Most Assists: Granit Xhaka (4), Xherdan Shaqiri (3), Gokhan Inler (2)
My Picks:
Schar – The Basel defender enjoyed a breakthrough season last time out, and has now cemented his place in the heart of the Swiss defence. He was Switzerland’s top goalscorer in qualifying, albeit only starting three games, so his goal threat and budget price-tag make him an astute buy.
Rodriguez – The Wolfsburg left-back got six goals and nine assists for his club in the Bundesliga last season. His attacking potential is no doubt enhanced by his share of free-kicks, and as a part of a miserly Swiss defence, he could be one of the breakout stars of the tournament.
Shaqiri – The ‘X-man’ is Switzerland’s star player, with his combination of lightning speed, dribbling ability and creativity making him key to their attack. Being in a fairly kind group, he has the potential to provide excellent value for any would-be suitors.
Stocker – The Basel winger offers much of the width for Switzerland, and in their set-up the majority of the attackers come down the left-hand side. He scored 13 goals and made eight assists in the Swiss Super League, and considering he also has budget appeal, may prove a clever alternative to Shaqiri.
Drmic (pronounced Der-Mick) – The FC Nurnberg striker is a recent addition to the Swiss national team, after his 16-goal haul for the Bundesliga minnows last season. This is a punt, though he is no doubt a talented player and has budget appeal.
Ecuador
Predicted Starting XI:
Dominguez
Paredes Erazo Guagua W.Ayovi
Gruezo Noboa
A.Valencia E.Valencia Montero
Caicedo
Qualification Stats:
Most Starts: Walter Ayovi (16), Fricson Erazo, Antonio Valencia (15), Juan Carlos Paredes (14), Segundo Castillo, Alexander Dominguez (12), Cristian Noboa (11) Christian Benitez, Jefferson Montero (9)
Most Goals: Felipe Caicedo (7), Christian Benitez (4), Jefferson Montero, Segundo Castillo (3)
Most Assists: Antonio Valencia (3), Christian Benitez (2)
My Picks:
W.Ayovi – The FC Pachua left-back is Ecuador’s most attacking defender. His crossing ability is good and he has picked up two assists in Ecuador’s last four friendlies. However, the question is whether you are willing to overlook their lack of clean sheet potential.
A.Valenica – The Ecuadorian captain is undoubtedly their most well-known player, and his ability to get to the by-line and get crosses into dangerous areas will be key for El Tri. His assist potential is good and he could prove to be an outstanding differential for their clash with Honduras
E.Valenica – Enner Valencia is a bolter in the Ecuadorian squad. Having been used sparingly in qualification, he has now cemented a place in the starting eleven, filling the void left by the departed Christian Benitez, and having notched in each of Ecuador’s last four friendlies, may prove to be a canny budget differential.
Caicedo – The penalty-taker for El Tri, Caicedo will be tasked with leading the line at the World Cup. He has not hit the heights his potential suggested he could at club level, but with seven goals in qualification, he will no doubt be key to Ecuador’s attacking potential.
Honduras
Predicted Starting XI:
Valladares
Beckeles Figueroa Bernardez Izaguirre
Garrido Palacios
Najar Garcia Espinoza
Bengtson
Qualification Stats:
Most Starts: Noel Valladares, Roger Espinoza (10), Victor Bernardez, Oscar Garcia, Luis Garrido, Carlo Costly (9), Maynor Figueroa, Emilio Izaguirre, Arnold Peralta (7), Wilson Palacios, Jerry Bengston (6)
Most Goals: Carlo Costly, Jerry Bengston (4)
Most Assists: Roger Espinoza (3)
My Picks:
Izaguirre – The Celtic left-back is undoubtedly the standout option in Honduras’ defence. He provided 12 assists in the Scottish Premier League last season and will be given licence by Suarez to bomb up the pitch. His assist potential is offset by the porous nature of their defence, however.
Espinoza – The Wigan midfielder will be the key creative force for Honduras, and his ability to put in wicked crosses will boost his Fantasy appeal.
Najar – The Anderlecht man is Honduras’ brightest talent, and his dribbling ability will catch the eye of many if given a chance in Brazil. The possibility of him being unleashed against Ecuador’s porous defence could make him a clever punt in Gameweek 2.
Bengtson – The NE Revolution forward will provide the goal threat for Honduras, and his fortune in front of goal will be key to Honduras getting anything out of the tournament. Could get something out of the Ecuador game.
