Thomas Muller grabs his fourth goal of the World Cup as Germany finish top of Group G. Cristiano Ronaldo nets Portugal’s winner against Ghana but both sides fail to progress, Jan Vertonghen slots home the only goal of the game as Belgium win again, while Islam Slimani fires Algeria into the knockout stages with a second-half equaliser against Russia:

Muller Nets Again as Germany Advance
Another goal from Thomas Muller was enough to see off USA in a hard-fought match yesterday evening. The Bayern man took his tally to four strikes and an assist for the tournament so far, with yesterday’s winner maintaining the form which has seen him serve up returns in all three of his appearances over the group stages.

Joachim Low drafted in Bastian Schweinsteiger for Sami Khedira in the centre of the park and also handed Lukas Podolski a spot in the front three as Mario Gotze dropped out, though the latter made way for Miroslav Klose at the break after an ineffectual display and seems unlikely to retain his place for the upcoming clash against Algeria. With Philipp Lahm once again picked in central midfield, the 1-0 win means that five German defenders have accrued a couple of clean sheets so far, with Mats Hummels leading the way after scoring in the opener against Portugal. Up against Algeria now for a place in the quarter-finals, investment at both ends of the pitch looks a canny tactic.

USA Through Despite Loss
Jurgen Klinsmann also made two alterations for yesterday’s match. At the back, Omar Gonzalez replaced Geoff Cameron in central defence, whilst Brad Davis gets the nod ahead of Alejandro Bedoya on the right flank, with Clint Dempsey leading the line once again. The former Fulham man was unable to net for the third match in a row, though, with his side struggling to make their mark in the final third – indeed, with Klinsmann’s side failing to muster a single attempt on target over the 90 minutes, upcoming opponents Switzerland will be confident ahead of their showdown in the knockouts.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Germany registered 41 recovered balls to their opponents’ 31. Leading the way for Low’s side were three of the back-four – Mats Hummels (12), Benedikt Howedes (eight) and Per Mertesacker, with five. For the USA, central midfielder Kyle Beckerman and right-back Fabian Johnson (five) were the main men.

Ronaldo Exits With a Goal
A first win of the tournament was not enough for Paulo Bento’s side as Portugal crashed out on goal difference. For the third match in a row, the Portuguese boss fielded a different lone striker, bringing in Eder for Helder Postiga, but the switch failed to make any real impact, with a Ghana own goal and Cristiano Ronaldo’s first effort of the campaign ensuring a 2-1 win. Bento also drafted in Pepe, William Carvalho and Ruben Amorim for Ricardo Costa, Andre Almeida, Raul Meireles and switched Miguel Veloso to left-back but despite a total of 18 attempts, with seven on target, Portugal were unable to find the goals that could have clinched a place in the last 16.

Ghana Crash Out
The Africans’ preparations were thrown into disarray after Kevin Prince-Boateng and Sulley Muntari were sent home prior to the match due to disciplinary reasons. Kwesi Appiah brought in Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and Abdul Majeed Waris in the pair’s absence but despite the best efforts of Asamoah Gyan – who fired an impressive nine shots on goal on his way to netting for the second time in the tournament – they were unable to grab the result required and finished bottom of Group G.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Pepe produced eight recovered balls for Portugal, with Bruno Alves (six), Miguel Veloso, Nani and Joao Moutinho (all five) also impressing. For Ghana, right-back Harrison Afful led the way with eight, while Mohammed Rabiu and Jonathan Mensah both registered seven and Kwadwo Asamoah managed six.

Vertonghen Wins it for Belgium
As Fantasy managers feared, Marc Wilmots made many alterations to his starting XI for last night’s clash with South Korea. With his side already through, the Belgium boss made seven alterations, with only Thibaut Courtois, Daniel Van Buyten, Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens retaining their places, as Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen missed out through injury.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Wilmots’ side still managed to prevail thanks to a Jan Vertonghen strike. The Spurs defender slotted home after a shot from substitute Divock Origi, who once again impressed with a lively display that will strengthen his chances of a start in the next match against USA. Conceding just one goal over the three group games, Belgium’s backline will surely come into consideration as we restructure our Fantasy squads ahead of the knockout stages.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Daniel Van Buyten and Jan Vertonghen led the way for recovered balls amongst the Belgians, with seven and six respectively. Hong Jeong-ho (eight), Kim Young Gwon (seven), Yun Souk-young and Han Kook-young (five) were top for South Korea.

Slimani Guides Algeria Into Knockouts
Islam Slimani struck for the second match in succession to help Algeria finish runners-up in Group H. Handed a starting role against South Korea last time around, he fired a goal and assist in a 4-2 win before netting a crucial 60th minute equaliser last night, with Yacine Brahimi (who also netted against the Koreans) supplying the assist. Vahid Halilhodzic made just one change from the side that beat South Korea in Matchday 2. Madjid Bougherra missed out with a heel problem, allowing Essaid Belkalem to slot into the heart of the back-four alongside Rafik Halliche, though the former Rangers man will surely be recalled for the upcoming clash against Germany as the Algerians look to upset the odds once again.

Kokorin Finally Nets
Alexander Kerzhakov was finally handed his first start of the tournament by Fabio Capello last night. The Russia boss also made just a single alteration from the previous match, with Maksim Kanunnikov the man to make way, though it was Alexander Kokorin who headed Russia’s opener to briefly boost hopes of qualifying, with the youngster belatedly opening his account for the tournament. Dimitri Kombarov owners were rewarded with an excellent assist from the left-back but without a single clean sheet over their three games, and just two goals to their name, Capello’s side have been a bitter disappointment at both ends of the pitch.

In the FIFA McDonalds game, all of the Algeria back-four and both defensive midfielders impressed for recovered balls. Nabil Bentaleb led the way with nine, with Essaid Belkalem (seven), Aissa Mandi, Jonathan Mesbah and Carl Medjani (all six) and Rafik Halliche (five) the main men. For Russia, centre-half Sergei Ignashevich’s nine was top, with left-back Dimitri Kombarov next best on seven.

I don't really see the point of paying money for 4 strikers?

You only get points for the guys on the pitch, so why have 4 when you can only play 3?

It appears Martins Indi has recovered from his concussion. But it's likely he won't play against #mex. Dutch doctors are extremely careful.

Judging by Holland's training sessions, Daley Blind might replace Martins Indi. Dirk Alba (Kuyt) would then play as the left wing-back.

So Blind to continue at centre-back? Bad news for his attacking potential...Janmaat probably the better choice now...

Hmm you know what's interesting. The striker conundrum.

You only get 3 spots and the 4th you hope you don't need to bring on since the first three are expected to deliver. Because Messi plays so late, and presumably (Neymar, Muller, Benzema, Robben, RVP, Sanchez) play before hand. You could end up with Messi on the bench and 10m your entire team loses in value.

It's for that reason that I'm very very reluctantly going to go without him. This week, I had Kokorin on my bench even though I knew full well that a game against Nigeria is the best chance for him to score since I had a trio of triple figures already on the field. That would be much much worse if Messi were the one to sit.

Way I see it, it's a flawed game, but you gotta play around it. Do I think Messi will score? Yes. But is it worth 10m to have him on your bench unable to come on?

Yeah but there's not many other areas of the pitch where I'd like to invest that 10million.

You only need 4/5 defenders at 4m each, and the top range priced mids aren't performing well, so It's all about budget players that will rack up recovered balls and then the small bit of quality that IS performing (JRod, Oscar)

    My McD Team, feel free to destroy;

    Cillessen - Mbolhi - 1mil
    Höwedes - Hummels - Mertesacker - Armero - Rojo - Johnson - Mesbah
    Cuadrado - Herrera - Matuidi - Valbuena - Kroos - Bentaleb
    Neymar - Muller - Messi - Djabou - 1mil

Germany have the tie of the round so I've lumped on, midfield reads weak but that's not where the points are. Current formation is 442, but will probably end up 433

    FOX

The way the results have panned out, teams like France/Germany have relative easy games in the next round, only to face each other in the next.

Holland,Argies could both have it tough in the next round, only to potentially have an "easy" game in the next round vs Greece/Costa Rica and Belg/USA. I still feel there could potentially be a upset in the Greece and Belgium games.

Fantasy wise it's going to take a lot of "maneuvering" to move up in rankings.

Just having a bit of a play around until FPL starts, how does this look for a template-ish team?

    5.5, 4
    5.5, 5.5, 4.5, 4, 4
    11, 9, 7, 4.5, 4.5
    12, 10, 9

With that hopefully you can roughly get

    Mannone Bench
    Aurier, Rafael, Trippier, Bench, Bench
Hazard, Ramsey, Eriksen, Cheap rotate, Cheap rotate
    Rvp, Sturridge, Bony

Give or take a mil here or there in which case downgrade Bony to Ings/Austin

Liverpool can not give away a player that has a contracted valuation of approximately £80million no matter who he bites. He could bite Linda Pizzuti's arse and still get away with it as he's bigger than the club.

That'd wind up being over £100 million so I guarantee that won't happen. Realistically I think Pool actually want to hold on to him, it depends on how he responds. It's possible that some of his valuation is dented, yes he's £80 million in his contract but he is missing a big chunk of the league, as such I think we'll see offers of around £50 million coming in for him.

I think they may take that. If not, the release clause.

LFC will make out they're supporting him but if they can sell him for top dollar to Barca or Madrid now, he's gone.

Is this bad news? Not really. If LFC can get Sanchez, JRod and Shaqiri/Pedro for the price of Suarez, it's a good deal.

For Monaco to sell JRod you'd have to fork up about 60 mill at least..

Maybe JRod + Sanchez for the price of Suarez, but Shaqiri/Pedro would be another 15 mill on top of that.

Sure why not sign another 6 wingers for the craic? 😉

Remember as well, Pool are making a net loss of £50 million a year. Financial Fair Play will examine them this year as they're in Europe so they may choose to absorb some of that money into fixing that problem, a smart move in my opinion.

I feel quite bad for them in some regards. I know the argument about hanging onto a liability etc. but he really did let them down and they are a club that could do with the money from him. It's a tough old conundrum.

As for transfers, I'm not sure, Sturridge is his one inspired but and Coutinho is on and off. Following that I think they've mostly been crap 😉

If it's a double offer then by my calculations it'd be Pedro + Sanchez + £10-20 million.

Barcelona, as I've said before, have said there's not a hope Sanchez is leaving but seeing as people continue to ignore that, his valuation is around 30 mill at this stage. Pedro for 10-15 mill. Barcelona will want a cut on the 80 million asking price.

Realistically though I see it being a purely cash offer if it is to happen, would actually expect Real to sign him above Barcelona.

I understand those reservations certainly and I can see why you wouldn't be keen! My thinking is that Barcelona really are very careful about their image, they like the "good boy" look to come through and I don't think Suarez will allow them maintain that. They have first option to buy Barbosa from Santos, he's only 17 but he is the next Brazilian superstar and an incredible striker, in the next 2 years he could join them so I don't think they really really need to bring in Suarez. If he leaves, it'll be to Real in my view. Could be wrong of course!

If they get Barbosa (who I believe is going to be amazing) AND Neymar and we end up with Suarez.... 🙁 🙁

Even Falcao would be better than Suarez.. Never thought I'd be hoping for Benzema to stay this much after wanting rid of him on more than a few occasions over the last few years..

Barcelona are incredibly obsessed with their image as they're "More than a club" and they're almost a national Catalan team, so they like to portray that well with their "perfect football" against us scumbags in Madrid.. Both teams are as bad as each other though. Could be an interesting few months ahead of us transfer wise...

instead of doubling up on german defense, why not go with this approach:
DUARTE, GAMBOA, DIAZ (3.5 each) - all from Costa Rica
MANOLAS, CHOLEVAS (2.5 each) - all from Greece
    HALLICHE - (1) - ALG
    GIMENEZ - (3) - URU

they are all starting and effectively you need only 3 defenders with good score which you will probably get in GRC-CRC game because there's more probability both of those teams won't score than germany will keep their clean sheet

and with this defense you can have all of the electric midfield and forward players you will ever want
