A month of thrilling football culminates this evening as Germany and Argentina take to the pitch in the 2014 World Cup Final. Many Fantasy mini-leagues are on the line tonight as Joachim Low’s free-scoring side square up to one of the most resilient backlines in the tournament so far:

Germany: Neuer; Lahm, Boateng, Hummels, Howedes; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Muller, Kroos, Ozil; Klose

Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Demichelis, Rojo; Biglia, Mascherano; Perez, Messi, Lavezzi; Higuain

Low makes one late change to the XI that started the 7-1 rout of Brazil, with Christoph Kramer replacing Sami Khedira in central midfield. Mats Hummels has recovered from the knee problem that forced him off at the break last time around, then, while Miroslav Klose leads the line for the third successive match. Thomas Muller carries the hopes of many Fantasy managers into this one after serving up five goals and a trio of assists so far, whilst Toni Kroos’ double against the Brazilians has earned him plenty of new owners across the Fantasy games. Elsewhere in attack, Klose is gunning for his third of the campaign after breaking the World Cup Finals scoring record last week, though Low also has the option of Andre Schurrle off the bench, with the Chelsea man notching three times already.

Alejandro Sabella’s side is also unaltered from the semi-finals. Martin Demichelis gets the nod ahead of Federico Fernandez in the heart of defence once again, while Enzo Perez and Ezequiel Lavezzi are handed another start due to injury concerns over Angel di Maria and Sergio Aguero – the latter is likely to appear off the bench again, though. The South Americans have delivered four clean sheets in their last five matches and Sabella’s defence has been subject to heavy Fantasy investment as the returns dry up for Lionel Messi. It’s now three games without a goal for the Barcelona man now, who has looked lethargic for his country over the knockout matches – when it matters most of all, can he deliver?

the whole site starts ranting and raving at him, tensions are high.
then suddenly he says, "the prize only matters if you win."
a collective "good point well made" sweeps the board and tensions are eased, some even have a giggle.
fast forward 10 months and he ends up winning fpl and has to make do with a fairly small prize. everyone laughs

Colombia would have made it to the semi if it hadn't been for the ref in the Brazil match. And they'd have given Germany a much better match than Brazil did too.

FIFA had probably decided before the competition began that the award would go to Messi or Neymar provided that they reached the final.

If the winner had to be someone who played in the final then they should have given it to Neuer or Muller, but I would have given it to James.

The ref in the Brazil match? Are you aware of the fact that the ref was actually pro Colombia in that match? And that Brazil played their best game against Colombia? Put down the pint, you're completely drunk.

Actuallyyyy...the freekick Luiz scored was a result of the ref giving James a yellow card for trying to make a tackle where he missed the ball but more importantly didn't touch anyone. Luiz dived.

The ref took no action when James was repeatedly fouled by Brazil, then gave him an undeserved yellow card.

I got the impression that he was afraid to upset the home crowd and allow Brazil to lose, although the latter decision might have been an honest mistake.

It was a great free kick by Luiz, but Colombia might have won if James had been treated better by the ref.

Quite a few stayed up all night a few years ago the first time this stunt was pulled.

AP was the instigator of the rumour, and he wasn't exactly very popular the next morning when he revealed that it was just a hoax!

        This.
For the most part I'd rather have a player facing Burnley away than City at home and there are some excellent fixture rotations throughout the season that run for quite long periods.

In that case, then of course you would prefer the away player but again it is very circumstantial. It also seems folly to look at these season long rotations and think for a minute that you will partner two players from GW1 to GW38, it will simply never happen. Always more important to me to look at a 8ish week window only when taking into account rotations as so much can crop up to change things.

That is so true. TBH you can look at a player one day thinking it will be a long/ medium term purchase than by the end of that GW think what the hell was I thinking

But why pick on Spurs? Is he suggesting that they can't get excited about playing any other Premier League team, not even their local rivals in the big grudge match? Or that they don't appreciate the importance that their fans give to local derbies because too many of them are foreigners?

            Hi RB 🙂
Nope, haven't bothered with any other games for couple of seasons now (or1 1/2) as they don't keep my interest. Enjoyed the ufpl game so I'll give that a bash. Playing one game badly is enough for me. How's things with you?

              Things are fine thanks chum.

The UFPL is going to be good for those of us who are around to update our teams throughout the GW.

I think I shall limit myself strictly to no more than 12 games and 25 teams this year. Otherwise it can get out of hand.

Was UFPL any good. Personally I like the 1 game 1 team approach. That way I can use all my concentration on 1 thing. I mostly do my team on quiet nights at work like tonight so am usually around quite a bit like tonight. Is it worth adding UFPL? I didn't try it last year

I would say it's worth a shot. Pick your 25 man squad then your 11 + 7 subs for the gw, with subs & captain change allowed over gw.. It's not got the weekly time constraints of FPL because your squad is chosen but you need to be around every game day to make changes before first kick off to make subs and that may be a slight bind. I like it for the reason your working with a squad and that negates the bandwagon element of FPL. I'm hoping both games will co exist and be fun but hard to see past FPL at this stage. As I posted above I've jacked in all other games for various reasons but ultimately they don't compare to FPL for sustaining interest, also you always have a chance to redeem yourself over the course of a season with a bit of graft & good luck.

Hmm interesting. Now my problem would be I am often asleep when matches kick off on Saturdays and Sundays. So any changes I make Are the night before do you think that is a disadvantage in this situation?

Yes, but.... if your around after the saturday games are finished you can make your subs then as long as it's before ko on the Sunday. It's not like the McFubar WC game where your waiting before every KO, so it's not a disadvantage other than missing any pre match news on the Sunday morning but that's rarely exact - more rumour.

trust me, you will struggle to keep to your conviction...

with any "addiction" the best cure is never to go cold turkey straight away...it is such a big part of you that your willpower will struggle to keep it at bay, and you will give in without actually doing anything to solve the problem...

what you should do I slowly but surely cut down on your use...you say you have tried to before and failed, well that's part of the problem...you cannot give up, you must keep persevering...

my advice for you is to just play Sky...that game has a limited amount of transfers, so that should keep tinkering down to a minimum as ILF says...if you aren't a UK citizen then play FPL...to do so successfully you must set limits to the time you spend on it each day....set aside say an hour (max) for which you spend on FPL, and use a timer to help you know when to get off...preferably do it in the morning, because you want to get it out of the way before you start the day...then you will have satisfied your craving without it getting out of hand...also reward yourself if you stick to time (ie. something you like to do - watch TV, eat chocolate, spend time with your friends etc...)...positive reinforcement is a great way to develop habits...if you fail and crack, don't give up, just try again until you succeed - hopefully your motivation to change gets you where you want to go...

you should also spend time doing important things (seriously) - like work, spending time with close ones, exercising, eating well - if you do this you will realise how good you feel after taking part in such activities, which should drive you to spend more time on them and less time on FPL - which lets face, often leads to frustration

    I don't even need the 4am open!

Already have my team roughed out & ready to go...

Also, judging by how Fantasy Footy typically unfolds, I have to assume that these players I have in mind will be the highest scoring at their particular positions & won't be rested, rotated or injured at any point during the year so I can just sit back, relax & collect the Grand Prize. 🙂

Cheapest way into the West Ham back line probably then? I am sure I remember something about West Ham trying to be more attacking this year so full backs crossing to big Andy Carroll who will be nicely rested may not be a bad thing.

Will be at least 4.5 and I wouldn't be surprised with 5.0 to be completely honest.

All West Ham first choice defenders will probably open up at 5 or 5.5 each given their defensive record last season.

5.5 is definitely extreme. They're not in the elite defence bracket so I'd only expect a 5.5 defender from a club like West Ham if a he'd scored a few goals the season before, which they don't have. 5.0 max.

Yeah fair enough, NP. 5.0 seems more likely I suppose. Still not in the budget bracket either way!

No. Mid range. Last year I worked with 1 premium 1 mid ramge and rest budge for most of the first half of the season. Seemed to work quite well. Finding those budget ones will be tricky this year I think.

Yep will be tough to get it right amongst the promoted sides. I may splash a little more in defense to open this year. May even start out 433 depending on prices if there are no mid-priced mids I like enough.

I'm just putting it out there. If Bacuna is a regular for Villa I reckon he will be a bargain this year.

I think 5 is about right for WH def. Still might be worth it. I think the real bargains will be a lot fewer this year. That Crystal Palace defence dpoiled us last year and Hull were good too. Burnley, Leicester and QPR I have my doubts about.

Was a nice article written up on Cresswell a couple days ago. He could be a good option. Depending on price though, I still have a soft spot for Reid and if I opt for a Hammers defender I will probably try and fit him in instead.
