Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson strengthened his attacking options for the season ahead last week by snapping up Argentine forward Leonardo Ulloa for a club record £8 million. The 28-year-old arrives from Brighton and Hove Albion on a four-year deal and is The Foxes fifth signing of the summer, following Marc Albrighton, Jack Barmby, Ben Hamer and Matthew Upson to the King Power stadium.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Pearson revealed the South American was one of the Championship winners’ key targets after a couple of impressive campaigns with The Seagulls:

“We identified Leo as a player that could help us move forward quite some time ago. He complements the forwards we already have very well and his attributes broaden the options available to us, which will be important this season. I’m delighted we’ve been able to add him to the squad. He has adapted extremely well to the English game in a relatively short period of time and I’m sure he will have a great deal to offer us in the Premier League.”

The History

Ulloa’s career kicked off back in 2002 in his native Argentina with second division Comisión de Actividades Infantiles Comodoro Rivadavia. Struggling to earn a regular role, he managed just one goal from seven appearances before making his way to San Lorenzo, where he produced three goals in 32 matches in the Argentine top flight.

The six-foot-three forward had brief spells with Arsenal Sarandi (three goals from 12 appearances) and Olimpo (14 league games produced three strikes and an assist) before he was acquired by Spanish Second Division outfit Castellon in the summer of 2008. Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Ulloa served up 30 goals in 79 appearances for the lower league side and persuaded La Liga club Almeria to shell out for his services.

Despite scoring seven times in his debut season in the Spanish top-flight, Ulloa was unable to prevent his new side from relegation. Over the subsequent season-and-a-half, he delivered 32 goals and a single assist in 56 appearances before Brighton snapped him up in January 2013. The Argentine needed no time to adapt to his new surrounds, though, and proceeded to deliver 26 goals and eight assists in 58 matches across all competitions for the Championship outfit before Pearson came calling.

The Prospects

As our resident Leicester fan, Andy, discussed in an earlier article on Leicester’s prospects, Pearson predominantly rolled out a 4-4-2 formation in last year’s successful promotion push, with a very occasional switch to 3-5-2. A two-man frontline looks on the cards, then, and given the significant outlay, it seems more than likely that Ulloa’s imposing figure will partner David Nugent up top from the off.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Ulloa reckons his physique makes him an ideal asset for the English top-flight:

“It was my father that said he wanted me to play in the Premier League because my body is made for England. I’ve enjoyed my time in England. It’s been a year and a half now. It’s a different kind of football, English football is intense and strong, but it’s good and I feel good when I’m on the pitch. I enjoy it all the time. I’m more excited than I was to be playing in La Liga, because I think the Premier League is number one. I want to play for Leicester and I know they are a really good team. Last season they played really well and I think it’s a really good club. They have a good team and it’s great for them to be in the Premier League after a long time out.”

While a price of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is budget-friendly, Ulloa may well be overlooked by Fantasy managers, given that Nugent is available for an identical price and also boasts spot-kick duties for Pearson’s side. Nugent amassed 20 goals and 12 assists in the promotion campaign, compared to the new boy’s 14 goals and four assists for Brighton, suggesting that he could provide better value.

Even so, Pearson’s acquisition of winger Marc Albrighton may prove beneficial to the Argentine. The former Villa man will be tasked with delivering plenty of crosses from the flank, with Ulloa’s aerial ability potentially playing a prominent role in Leicester’s attacking forays.

Looking at the season ticker, though, it’s fair to say that few will be willing to splash out on Pearson’s weapons from the offset. With showdowns against Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United supplemented by trips to Stoke and Palace in the first six Gameweeks, the Championship winners have one of the toughest opening schedules around. Steering clear looks the safest option to begin with, then, affording us time to assess whether Ulloa is capable of usurping Nugent as a Fantasy option when the fixtures take a turn for the better around Gameweek 7.

My post got stuck on some page earlier today:

    RMT please!
Making this team almost costed me some brain damage 🙂
Help and advice are highly appriciated.

    3-4-3

    Foster/Krul (rotation)

    Jones - Bavies - Chester/Cameron/Shackell (3-way rotation)

    Sanchez - Fabregas - Mata - Siggy - Marney

    Rooney - Dzeko - Weimann

    3.5m ITB

    My thoughts:
    1. Chester -> Mariappa, depends who is nailed. Will take advice for a better 3 way-rotation for the same price.
    2. May change keepers depending on DEF rotation changes to avoid defensive doubles.
    3. May switch Fabregas to cheaper Chelsea MID, depending on pre-season form. May get Hazard, only if I downgrade Sanchez due to injury. If Hazard gets injured, will get Schurrle
    4. Dzeko -> Jovetic, depending on pre-season form and CS
    5. Weimann - has good-ish fixtures, Tekkers is dead for now, cheap. May upgrade to 6.0, if i find the funds
    6. 3.5m ITB should stay there for Dzeko -> Aguero/Sturridge. May get Aguero from GW1, depending on CS

Cheers, and thanks for reading my essay. Ideas please 🙂

You seem to have thought it through. Uncertainties around Cameron's nailed onness though but im sure you are aware of that.
Regarding nr 3, There is no other Che midfielder (worth owning..) that will get continous playing time besides hazard and fabregas. Dont downgrade.

I think there are cheap ones, but not many - there are basically around 10 or so 5.5-6.5 decent midfielders to choose from. This is mainly because the midfielders of the big clubs are all 8m plus (or play for man utd excluding mata) so you're taking punts on those teams who are going to finish 7th-14th.

Everton's midfield has barely been spoken about and I think there is value there. But largely the simple fact is that arsenal, city, liverpool, chelsea and utd are going to be 1-5 in terms of goals scored (in whatever order) so you have to invest in those areas.

      Austin
      Dzeko
      Giroud
      Eriksen
      Lamela
      Bony
      Vermaelen (if at Utd)
      Mariappa
      Cameron
      Vlaar
      Targett
      Wisdom
      Davies
      Debuchy

And there are more good value players who are a little more expensive. Some of those aren't nailed on, because we simply can't know everyone who is nailed on at this stage.

It's like this every season. Last years value picks get priced up, and we have no idea who the over-performers will be till the new season starts.

This time last year, if you'd told people Ramsey would be essential they'd have thought you were a joker.

Likewise Joel Ward, Vito Mannone... Barkley, Bony, Mutch...

Incidentally, Terry is almost exactly 3 years younger than Distin but according to everyone here unable to play regularly this season 😉

But to be fair Terry has Champion's League and I feel he's maybe started losing some of his pace where as Distin remarkably seems to have maintained his running ability.

Age is an indicator but not the cause...

Yes, but I think wheels were in motion for a while. If reports are to be believed, his $120k / wk wages dissuaded Chelsea, but also the promise of "first-team football" at United tipped the scales.

I personally can't think of another United player defensively capable enough to play LWB.

    Hello everyone

I just wanna know why isnt anyone sold on pelle? I know he is not proven on the PL but lets weight up the pros and cons

    Pros:
    Very good fixtures
He is more or less Southampton's only striker at the moment
Worked for the same manager before with a strong record with him
Sjould still get decent service from the likes of tadic and ramirez
He is favourably priced at 7.5 providing a decent alternative for dzeko (who I have some serious doubts over his gametime) and giroud (Not the greatest of opening fixtures) and for 1m cheaper

    Cons:
    Unproven in the BPL
    Southampton might implode

That said even if they implode someone's fotta be scoring goals anyway

Looking forward to hear your thoughts

    Thanks for your time

he was in my team until today, but I can't justify it now with the amount of players saints have shipped. I'm happy to wait and can easily downgrade giroud or bony for him if so. he's a quality player... but saints... oh saints...

Yes I am not saying its all rosy when pelle is concerned I just think coming at 7.5 isnt a huge risk like sanchez and other expensive newcomers pelle gives you 1m to spend elsewhere like upgrading a 4.0 drfender tp 4.5 or upgrading luis to cahill for security of starts etc

Slight risk, but hey ho, I get the last laugh when someone gloats at 11.31...

It might not mean anything, or it could be a sign that Vermalean is leaving, but there's a picture of Calum Chambers wearing the no 5 training jersey in the Arsenal training camp. He's meant to be wearing 21.

    Ramsey / Haz / Mata / Siggy / Puncheon
    RVP / Aguero (4.5M)

The bench is weak but starting 11 is very strong imo. I know i have three 4M defs but will mostly start the other 2 and rotate between the cheapies.

no that's better - vlaar is a good option because at least he's first name on teamsheet - too many question marks over your current defence - two of them could easily not even get in a matchday squad!

    A) Albrighton + Giroud (playing 343 with Dzeko and Rooney uptop)
    B) Albrighton + Bony (playing 343 with Dzeko and Rooney uptop)
    C) De Jong + 6 mil or lower striker (Playing 352)

A and B gives me no rotation option on the midfield and with my forwards since all of them exept Albrighton is going to play every match. C gives me the option to rotate Siggy and De jong with my cheap forward depending on fixtures.

It is an awkward system for wingers though. Wouldn't be confident in Ashley Young as a wing back like he mentions there

Ain't watched any Spuds games during the pre season, who looks more likely to be in the hole? Lamela or Eriksen?

But then again Lallana under Poch played out wide and still got plenty points....so its not a clear cut choice of just choosing the hole player

Hi guys, regular reader of posts here but I rarely post myself.

RMT please, it's a working progress and I tinker with it everyday.

    Howard / Krul
    Debuchy / Terry / Caulker / B.Davies / Bruce
    Sterling / Sanchez / Hazard / Siggy / Albrighton
    Rooney / Giroud / Weimann

I need to include some City players somewhere in here but I have no idea where, or who to include if somebody could help me out?

Is Hazard worth it over Nasri/Silva?
Is it worth including a Spurs player such as Lamela or Eriksen?
Is a 1 keeper or rotation keeper the better tactic?
Is Sterling nailed on to play every game?

    Cheers.

just swap sterling for nazri after week one - or play dseko over giroud given you have arsenal covered with sanchez

yeah, it's a fair enough point. I'm not convinced myself either, but for 3.5m cheaper than aguero he's probably got the same chance at the moment!

Im not buying into howard atleast at the beginning since everton's fixtures are quite bad

I think Hazard is worth the money even if he doesnt work out u can easily upgrade to sanchez or yaya or downgrade to ramsey

The better question about sterling is whether he is worth the ridiculous 8.5 price he has been handed

Iopeningpersonally get lamela or eriksen since they have good openong fixtures

sterling's price isn't ridiculous? second half of the season he was as good as anyone and he'll play in the number ten role. He's actually cheap compared to say silva, who is always injured, ramsey who plays a lot deeper and say tadic/capella - who are totally unproven
