Sunderland boss Gus Poyet finally ended the search for a new left-back last week by snapping up Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea. The 23-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ fourth signing of the summer, following Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon to the club:

After completing his move to Wearside, the Dutchman revealed he rejected other suitors in order to stay in the English top-flight and was quick to talk up his attacking intentions for the season ahead:

“I had a couple of offers from different countries but the Barclays Premier League is where I want to be, I want to show everybody what kind of player I am and what I am capable of doing. I am a left-back who likes to go forward and I like to take people on. I will also try to get some assists but I will do my defending first because that is where my role starts, it is all about helping the team and I think I will do a good job.”

The History

After progressing through the Den Bosch and PSV Eindhoven youth systems over a period of four years, Van Aanholt was snapped up by Chelsea as a 17-year-old back in 2007. Despite a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman played just eight times for the Chelsea first-team (delivering a goal and assist) and was mainly farmed out on loan by the London club after failing to displace Ashley Cole in the starting XI.

Spells at Coventry (20 appearances, one assist), Newcastle (seven league outings), Leicester (12 games, one goal and one assist) and Wigan (four appearances) between 2009 and 2012 afforded Van Aanholt little opportunity to establish himself as a regular, though.

A temporary move to Vitesse Arnhem in January 2012 finally helped him settle down and, over the course of two-and-a-half seasons on loan at the Dutch club, he finally found his form. After serving up two goals and five assists in 46 appearances in his first 18 months, Van Aanholt’s attacking forays came to fruition last season, where he produced five goals and five assists in 38 matches over all competitions.

At international level, the raiding left-back has represented Holland at youth level on 26 occasions, scoring once, whilst he’s also turned out a couple of times for the senior side.

The Prospects

With the versatile Phil Bardsley and on-loan Marcos Alonso both departing the club over the summer, Van Aanholt looks set to be handed a regular role at left-back for the Black Cats in the season ahead.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, a price of 4.5 seems likely, whilst a cost of just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game makes Van Aanholt one of the cheapest first-choice defenders around.

Analysing his stats from last term, the Dutchman’s attacking displays bode well – a total of 52 shots over 29 appearances equates to 1.8 attempts per game, whilst in terms of creativity, he averaged one key pass per league match. Bearing in mind that Alonso registered 1.6 shots and created 1.1 chances per match during his loan stint, the Dutchman looks a like-for-like replacement for the Fiorentina man.

In terms of defensive prospects, Poyet’s arrival clearly made a significant difference to Sunderland’s resilience. After conceding in every match under Paolo di Canio, the Wearsiders managed 11 shut-outs in the remaining 31 league fixtures (six at home and five on their travels) and, with their backline options so kindly priced, many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Black Cats ahead of a schedule which pits them against West Brom, QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the opening seven Gameweeks.

With an average of 4.9 points per game under Poyet, though, it’s difficult to look beyond Vito Mannone as the best value route amongst Sunderland’s defensive options. The Italian’s heroics between the posts have already earned him over 13% ownership in FPL – the sixth most popular keeper – though if Poyet decides to alternate Mannone with Pantilimon as his number one as the season unfolds, Fantasy faith in Van Aanholt may take a turn for the better.

Can anyone update me on the "Sanchez situation"?

    1. Is he an Arsenal player, he is on FPL however there is speculation he hasn't got a passport, a NI number or more importantly a work permit.

    2. With that in mind which is the best combination (a) Fabregas and Sanchez OR (b) Hazard and Ramsey ??

There will be no problem getting any of those sorted as he has played majority of Chile's games over past 2 years.

B is safe but if A do any where near as expected they'll be the better pick

Thought this was worth sharing. I've taken the top four teams from each of the last five seasons and checked what percentage of the time clean sheets are kept in each part of the season. Results below:

    Games 1-10: 34.5%
    Games 11-20: 40%
    Games 21-30: 44.5%
    Games 31-38: 43.1%

If this is anything to go by, maybe the conventional wisdom is correct and you should go cheap at the back to start...

Confirms the theory that clubs take a while (quater to half a season) to hit their stride with organisation and solidity.

Although United are not a top for team this season account of last seasons 7th place, they are still very much in that bracket and with united first ten games in mind I see 5 clean sheets (provided we recruit nicely in one or two defenders as expected. Also to add to what you said for others to keep in mind. As I learned in psychology, The best samples for graphs have a MINIMUM of 100 examples per category to graph (You have around 50 per category a little less in bottom three) and you should get what you call a bell curve where results get higher and higher in % until it hits the middle (in this case mid season). After which they slightly decline to the original % or their about at the start of the test hence making a bell shape for a bell curve. If you had the resources to look at 10 seasons you would see that.

Everybody keep in mind by graphing like that over the history of top four teams for the past then years it will be closer to 35% depending on fluctuation of the rest of the results. Either way stats will prove mid season is the best time to bolster your defense for a certain length and maybe go back to mid table defenses for the later stages of the season.

      Brilliant post though!!

Oh, and Liverpool's preferred CB pairing is most likely Sakho and Lovren, need to downgrade Skrtel anyway, you could downgrade Mirallas as well and spend the cash on getting an elite heavy hitter.

Defence looks ok. I would choose Lovren over Skrtel if you want a Liverpool defender as he's .5 cheaper. Doubts about Shaw's fitness atm. Young could be played at wing back for the first couple of games. Pelle is a risk and one I personally think will flop.

Brown looked good on video's, strong likes to run with the ball and has a good shot.
Also has a good scoring record for Dynamo Kiev, I don't think he was on penalties. Too many other options like Shevchenko on them.
He was a surprise omission from the Nigeria World Cup squad and has been on penalties in the past for his country.
Who is on pens for WBA? Morrison, Dorrans,Brunt?
@6m im going for him from the start. Same risk as the likes of Pelle and is £1m cheaper.

In a rotation pair, would you play SWA (a) or EVE (h)? I would play the former, but the conventional wisdom seems to be play the home fixture above all.

Can you help me with this team. Doesn’t seem too bad but still wonder how to improve it. Thinking of going for a rotating midfielders instead of Snodgrass/albrighton.
Defense and keepers rotate quite nicely. But the fixture rotation of Newcastle/ Sunderland are not that great.

    Speroni/Green
    Luis/jones/Davies/Colloccini/O’shea
    Hazard/sanchez/mata/snodgrass/albrighton
    Rooney/Dzeko/Ideye

    Thanks in advance

Your putting too much "pressure" on your strikers, say they dont score or dont play well, who do you have? you need to balance your team around a bit more.
Your midfield looks ok, but youve gone with the trends, many people have Johnson in, i was going to fall into that trap myself, but changed it.
Apart from that, i like your team

The team looks relatively safe, with some calculated punts.

I don't think you need to change too much, but you could find a better partner for snodgrass... Think that Burnely rotate well with them, so perhaps Marney or such like?

In terms of newcastle/sunderland, it's not great.

They do rotate quite well with palace, west brom though.

To be honest, assuming you are playing 3 at the back - just looked at all your fixtures and there's no real issues until gameweeks 7 and 9.

        Take a look at them.

I would rather have a expensive midfilder (Hazard) than a 7,5 one like tadic or de jong. Fixture of WBA arent bad and he is the kind of player who does generally good in the PL. He is strong fast and good on the header. Everything a team like WBA would need this year.
