Swansea boss Garry Monk continued to restructure his first-team squad last week with the acquisiton of winger Jefferson Montero from Mexican side Morelia. The 24-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the sixth new face so far, following the arrival of Lukasz Fabianski, Bafetimbi Gomis, Marvin Emnes, Stephen Kingsley and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Monk was quick to emphasise that the speedy Ecuadorian will add new weaponry to the Swans’ attack for the campaign ahead:

“We have watched Jefferson in depth and a lot of work went on behind the scenes to make the deal happen. He has a lot of quality and with the attributes he has he adds another dimension to our game. The ideal situation for me is that I have different types of players in the same position because in a game I may need to use a different approach. Jefferson certainly offers us something different, and I’m really happy he is here.”

The History

Montero progressed through the youth ranks at Emelec before making his senior debut in 2007. Two goals and 22 appearances later, he was on his way to Independiente in Ecuador’s Second Division and, after a brief loan stint with Dorados (five matches, one goal) he proceeded to net 19 times in 37 matches for his parent club.

Signed by Spanish outfit Villarreal as a 20-year-old, Montero spent his first year with the club’s B side, where 10 goals in 32 appearances led to his promotion to the senior squad in time for the 2010/11 campaign. His time in La Liga was far from successful, though. Farmed out on loan to Levante (11 appearances) and Real Betis (a goal and three assists from 33 matches), he subsequently turned out on 20 occasions for Villarreal, delivering a couple of goals and three assists, before he was sold to Morelia in June 2012.

Over a couple of seasons with the Mexican club, Montero’s output was fairly modest. The wide man chipped in with 14 goals and 12 assists in 65 appearances across all competitions before Monk made his move last week. On the international scene, Montero has already been capped 43 times by Ecuador and found the net on eight occasions.

The Prospects

The Ecuadorian’s arrival puts real question marks over the pitch time of Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge out wide, as Monk looks to put his own stamp on the Swansea first-team in his first full season at the helm.

Handed a permanent deal after steering the club to safety last term, the former centre-half introduced a slightly more direct approach than predecessor Michael Laudrup and resultantly saw his side notch 1.8 goals per game over his 14 league fixtures in charge, compared to 1.2 under the Dane’s guidance.

Whilst Montero’s blistering pace certainly fits in with Monk’s approach, the return of fellow midfielder Sigurdsson to the club should ensure the Ecuador international remains off Fantasy radars ahead of the season kick-off. As mentioned in the recent Sigurdsson Moving Target article, the playmaker averaged 5.7 FPL points per game during his first spell with the Welsh outfit and has immediately found his form – bagging a brace in his second debut, he’s also been handed dead-ball duties and, coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (the same price as Montero) has the potential to be a real bargain.

It should be noted that Montero has also impressed in pre-season, shining in the recent 2-0 win at Exeter, with Monk again underlining his pace as a key factor…

“I think Jefferson showed glimpses in that opening 45 minutes at Exeter of what he can do. He’s great…Pace always hurts teams. Anyone who’s quick and has got half a brain about them can cause people problems. Jefferson’s got very good pace and quality about him as well. And for a player who’s so young, he’s got experience as well. The World Cup’s been a great experience for him. If he can bring the momentum he’s got from that into the Premier League it’ll be great.”

Such comments suggest that Montero will immediately be central to Monk’s plans for the new campaign, cementing him as a differential ahead of a kind opening schedule for the Swans. Currently owned by just 0.3% of FPL managers, the winger welcomes Burnley, West Brom, Stoke and Newcastle to the Liberty in the first seven Gameweeks and also faces a trip to Sunderland during that period. While there is clear early promise, Montero will need to excel over a consistent period if he is to oust Sigurdsson as the major source of Fantasy points in Swansea’s midfield.

    Hi all,

Been playing the game & using the site for about 3 seasons now & done alright but last season I had a stinker (I blame iton most of the big club changing manager)!

Want to try do a bit better this season so am putting my starting team up to be rated, what do you guys reckon:

    GK - Krul & Mannone
DEF - Luis, Debuchy, B Davies, Wisdom & Target
MID - Silva, Mata, Fabregas, Sigurdsson & Noble
FOR - Rooney, Dzeko & Bony

Be gentle, its my first time here 😉

      I had a stinker too

I think costa is going to light it up this season, I'm basing my team around rooney and costa I know its template but I don't care.

Get a man untied defender, they have chance to get a lot of cs' over the first 6 gws. So choose either evans or jones instead of debuchy

Yeah, I agree United have got really good opening fixtutes. I'm kind of holding of to see if Vermaelen goes to United, if he does he's straight in

Had a look at Costa too think he'll either be awesome or terrible! To get him in I'd probably need to drop Bony to either Jelavic or Long & I'm not sure if it's worthwhile just yet

Decent team really. However I'd be concerned about owning all 3 of Wisdom, Targett and Mannone. None of those guys are nailed on and you really need to have a reliable starting defence early on. Targett in particular will only be a bench player now that they have signed Bertrand. Wisdom and Monnone are both 50/50

Mannones not too bad as Pantillimon is the same price so would just be a straight swap. I reckon Wisdom will play, seems an odd move if he doesn't but your right about Targett, forgot Southampton had signed Bertrand, looks like I'm on the hunt for a £4 mill bargain bucket defender!

Gamboa is about to sign for WBA but is awaiting the results of a visa application. He is a RB and would be competition for Wisdom however I understand Gamboa can also play RW but the risk remains.

I think getting either one of Pantillimon and Mannone is a risk. Its possible that neither will be nailed on at any stage of the season. I think you'd be better off going with a safer option instead of using up transfers to get in the last one to start, so again, its quite a risky approach.

Can see where your coming from there liked the Newcastle Sunderland keeper rotation for £9 mill but like you say its a risk, will have to see if theres another pairing. I could up either Wisdom or Target as I've still got half a mill in the bank. Wanted to keep a bit on standby for an emergency but maybe not the best tactic. Thanks 🙂

Looking at Guzan & Foster rotating now with James Chester in for Targett but I know he's a bit of an injury risk so considering Vlaar instead but don't want to go overboard with Villa players!

Welcome to our club PMC. I was the opposite, stinker 2 years ago then amazing last season

GK - Krul & Mannone VERY GOOD, great rotations
DEF - Luis, Debuchy, B Davies, Wisdom & Target VERY GOOD, wisdom is not a nail but should get some game time
MID - Silva, Mata, Fabregas, Sigurdsson & Noble Good balance! Good to see Silva. shame not to have Hazard but that would be greedy
FOR - Rooney, Dzeko & Bony Again solid. I was looking at Bony also. Giroud is another possible?

      I like this team except:
      (a) I don't like Krul + Mannone at all...the received wisdom is that they rotate well...the reality is that they rotate badly...just look at those tough home games for Sunderland...if you ask me you'd be better starting off with Krul + Elliot...and let's not forget that mannone might be insecure and Newcastle were abject in defence last season
      (b) I don't like Wisdom + Targett...these players are reserves for your whole team...Targett is unlikely to play much...he's Southampton's reserve left back...and when you add in uncertainty about Wisdom as well I really think you need at least another £4.5m defender
      (c) Although all your other players are solid picks you've not really paid enough attention to fixture difficulty for my liking...I think you've gone too heavy on Man City, Arsenal and Swansea...I'm not saying you shouldn't get any of these guys but I think you should at least consider alternatives

I'm definitely open to other options.

I'm looking at replacing the keepers with Guzan & Foster. Im not keen on Krul & Elliot 2 keepers from the same side seems crazy to me.

Have changed Targett, as Ryan has said above he's not going to start now that Southampton have signed Bertrand. Have brought in Chester as Hull have decent opening fixtures but I think he could be an injury risk so may look at alternatives.

Your right about City, Arsenal & Swansea, I'll need to look at my options there now I've looked at the fixtures

No idea mate, all depends on what happens with Cech. The way I see it, if Cech stays, he and Courtois will rotate until one nails down the spot. Mou recently described Schwarzer as being a good 'second keeper' so there are signs that Cech may leave. As I said, it's a wait and see

Just interested as to what the repercussions would be for Giroud and Sanchez. Theo would be odds on for the RW where we know he is a reliable source of points. Thats one up over the other Arsenal midfield choices I think.
