We look back over the nine fixtures played out so far over Gameweek 1 and assess the lessons learned. Swansea’s playmaker, United’s worrying form, Liverpool’s young wide man, the limited number of budget defenders and the City frontline dilemma are amongst this lunchtime’s topics.

United are still in a rut
The Red Devils headed into the season with a 100% record over the summer but their limitations were quickly exposed by Garry Monk’s Swansea. Much was made of Louis van Gaal’s 3-4-1-2 formation but a lack of cohesiveness saw the Dutchman change to a 4-4-1-1 after the break, already denting the appeal of Ashley Young, who was moved to left-back in the latter stages of the 2-1 home loss. The fixtures may still be on their side but United clearly have a lot of sorting out to do – Van Gaal looks poised to hit the summer sales over the next fortnight and by the time the transfer window slams shut, we could have a number of new options to consider. After Saturday’s showing, though, the jury’s still out on whether United can find their feet to take advantage of those fixtures. Juan Mata’s owners are fidgeting already, with almost 20,000 FPL sales in 48-hours.

Gylfi looks the real deal
Paramount to the Swans’ win was a change of formation by Garry Monk. Having fielded Gylfi Sigurdsson on the right of a 4-4-2 in the club’s final friendly, the Swansea manager afforded the playmaker his preferred role in “the hole” behind Wilfried Bony. A goal and assist has already earned him a price rise and with three home games in the next four, Sigurdsson looks set to quickly escalate in price as Burnley, West Brom and Southampton all roll up to the Liberty. The pre-season rotation with Stoke’s Bojan Krkic already looks unwise, with Sigurdsson’s showing at the weekend underling his ability to deliver regardless of the fixture difficulty. If you’ve got him, don’t bench him particularly if he’s set to play his favoured “number 10” role away from home.

The budget buys are limited at the back
Five back line options in the 4.0 price bracket started the weekend action – Alan Hutton, Andre Wisdom, Liam Moore, Paul Dummett and Alex Bruce. The latter’s half-time withdrawal in a 1-0 win at QPR meant the Villa right-back was the only one to register a shut-out, though, and, encouragingly, the Scot seems to have been handed a new lease of life under Paul Lambert this term. If Villa can hold onto skipper Ron Vlaar (they failed to register a single shut out without the Dutchman last season), Hutton could quickly escalate in ownership, though showdowns against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Everton in the next seven suggest points may be hard to come by.

Southampton are no pushovers
The Saints may have suffered an opening weekend defeat but their display at Anfield bodes well for those eyeing up investment ahead of a promising run of fixtures. In spite of a number of summer departures, Ronald Koeman looks to have invested wisely and the Dutchman’s 4-3-3 formation could bring a handful of options onto our radars ahead of a schedule which pits his side against just one of last term’s top eight in the next 11 Gameweeks. Nathaniel Clyne’s strike suggests the right-back could prosper at both ends of the pitch under Koeman, whilst Dusan Tadic’s assist and James Ward-Prowse starting berth on the right of the front three offers options across the price points in midfield.

Sterling is vital in the post-Suarez era
The Uruguayan’s departure was mourned by Liverpool fans and Fantasy managers alike after his sensational final season on Merseyside. Sterling’s growing influence in the final third against Southampton suggests he could be the talisman Brendan Rodgers is looking for – with his coolness in the box earning a goal and assist against Southampton, it’s fair to say that 8.5 price tag won’t be quite so budget-friendly for much longer as we place our collective faith in the youngster.

Sanchez will take time to deliver
The Chilean was kept in the shade by Aaron Ramsey’s late winner against Palace on Saturday evening. With the Welshman’s strike and maximum bonus quickly getting his season off the mark, Sanchez owners may need to be patient – Arsene Wenger admitted after the match his summer signing “needs to improve his understanding” with his new team-mates. Sanchez’ forays down the right looks likely to benefit Mathieu Debuchy, with the Frenchman flooding forward at every opportunity. Both players earned an assist on their debuts but in may not be until Theo Walcott is available that we get to see if Sanchez will be fielded up front – a scenario that could easily lead to a double-up in the Arsenal midfield.

Palace remain resilient – for now
Many feared the Eagles were on a hiding to nothing at the Emirates but caretaker manager Keith Millen frustrated the hosts right until the final minute. Millen took the helm last season after Ian Holloway’s departure and picked up a clean sheet in back-to-back matches prior to the appointment of Tony Pulis and clearly knows how to set up his defence. Reports linking Palace with former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood may be somewhat disconcerting for Fantasy managers who have invested in their backline, though – Spurs managed just five shut-outs in 22 fixtures under his guidance last time around.

Aguero’s return casts doubts over Dzeko and Jovetic
Sergio Aguero’s impact off the bench against Newcastle already has us fretting over the City forwards situation. With a week still to go until they entertain Liverpool, it seems almost inevitable that the Argentine will take his place up top, leaving Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko to battle it out for the remaining berth. With Alvaro Negredo still out for a couple of months, though, Manuel Pellegrini will surely be keen to give all his available forwards pitch time as he looks to ensure Aguero doesn’t fall foul of injury again – if the Chilean restricts the trio’ minutes, David Silva’s goal suggest he could be the safest route into the champions’ attack if you’re willing to gamble on the Spaniard’s fitness record.

Something else I know... although I suspected it all along, my 'live' team is going to struggle to beat my 'dead' team.

If Zep, or anyone else who knows, reads this, how often are score updates going to be communicated?

I vice captained Lukaku instead of Sturridge because with RVP as c I needed some certainty over the year that one of my three options would actually and not miss because of injury. RVP can't return from summer soon enough for me.

Fantasy Football Scout Community Champion needed.

As you may have noticed we’ve revamped our Scout Picks. Mark, myself, Paul as well as a community champion picked by you each week are up against each other.

We are now looking for Gameweek 2’s Scout Picks Community Champion to represent you and get one over on The Scouts.

To put yourself forward simply add in your Gameweek 2 Scout Picks here. For everyone else please upvote the poster you would like to represent you based on their picks.

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of budget. We are sticking to a budget of 83.5m. There’s no captain in the picks either. Also only a valid FPL formation is allowed and a maximum of three from one team.

I’ll leave this vote for 24 hours and come back at 3pm tomorrow to find out who is the community’s choice.

Once selected I’ll need you to email me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with your final scout picks by Thursday 5pm at the latest. There is time to alter based on injuries on Friday daytime – just keep me updated by email. If your champion fails to submit their final team by this time then an assistant from our team of moderators and contributors will step in. This week's back up community champion is Green Windmill.

Gameweek 1’s community champion is Tom Fenley and so far he’s given you a fine start.

Here’s the current points tally going into tonight’s Chelsea match

Tom Fenley – 44, two to play
Paul – 38, three to play
    Jonty -34, three to play
Mark – 34, two to play

I'm expecting a season of heart ruling head from Mark with an increasingly desperate series of nostalgiac punts (G Johnson, Matt Taylor, etc.), head ruling heart from Jonty with every decision being calculated with ruthless dispassion and a nice balance from Paul who plays like a 'normal' (albeit skilled) person 🙂

The community side will probably be up and down like a yo-yo depending which maniac personality gets to grips with it from week to week 🙂

      My Picks:

      GK: Guzan

      DEF: Cahill, Ward, Clyne, Chester

      MID: Siggurdson, Hazard, Sterling

      FWD: Rooney, Dzeko, Costa

      Total cost: 83.5

      Reasons:

      GK

Guzan gets the nod as Villa were impressive defensively away to stoke. A home game against a Newcastle side who's new signings may still need some more time to gel bodes well for a CS.

      DEF:

Chelsea's first game at home against a newly promoted side in Leicester means a Chelsea defender was essential for these picks. While uncertainty surrounds the backline, Cahill I believe is Chelsea's most nailed on defender and certain to start.

Ward had a very good game against Arsenal, and it may be that Crystal Palace haven't lost their way to the extent that many of us expected. A home game against a West Ham team who couldn't even break down a 10 man Spurs side will be a good judge of this theory.

Clyne was excellent against Liverpool and took his goal very well. Although the Baggies got themselves two goals, Clyne's attacking threat could mean he excels even if Southampton concede.

Lastly, Chester was the standout player of GW1 in my eyes. A tasty looking home match against Stoke, who failed to score against Villa could well yield more points.

      MIDS

Siggurdson looked sharp and a home game against Burnley means he is a solid pick for GW2. If he can do it against Man U, odds are he can do it against Burnley.

Sterling is up against a City backline that is far from full strength. With Mangala still potentially injured and Clichy filling in at RB i trust the young winger to terrorise Man City at the Etihad.

Hazard also gets the nod. Although i've yet to see him play, his reputation as a flat track bully against the lower teams indicates that he could bet set for a bumper haul against Leicester next weekend.

      FWDS

ooney took his goal well and looks the only Utd player worth having. Sunderland have already shipped two goals, and Van Gaal will be desperate to make amends after the worst possible start.

Dzeko looked razor sharp against Newcastle, and his assist was fantastic. I think with Aguero nearing full fitness this partnership will be deadly this season, and I expect Dzeko to open his tally against a Liverpool defence that still looks suspect.

Finally, Costa is the 3rd Chelsea player i've selected. While Leicester played well against Everton they were often exposed at the back. I expect Chelsea to win this match comfortably, and should allow Costa to add some goals to his name.

Oh yes! I was looking for that for ages – How could I not see it?! My effort above is null and void for the week then as I only put two Chelsea players in – It surely needs three! I would have another go for this week, but that is probably against the rules so will leave until next week to have another go.

Is it possible to list all the contenders and their line-ups in a single post or spread-sheet, and then let us vote for our choice?

It is very difficult to compare them all when there are so many separate replies.

This might also be useful to our Community Champion, if he wishes to replace any of his original picks with popular picks from other contenders.

(I'm sure that Jonty and Paul wouldn't also base their teams on these popular picks, and we know that Mark doesn't like templates - we want four different Scout Picks teams to look at, not the same one four times!) 🙂

I assume he was the lone forward with Bojan on the wing? Maybe there is potential there. With Bojan having such high ownership a couple of weeks not performing could see quite a price drop and whose to say he will not get moved up front himself.

Banking on Eriksen to improve, may transfer out Chambers this week or could leave 1 week and bench, also want to see how Bojan does, he got a full 90 against Villa so heavily in Hughes plans. Maybe swap Mata for Sterling? Or should I wait till after the City game?

He didn't play badly and was given the full 90, got the same amount of points as Pelle, Jovetic, Remy - In that bracket there isn't much choice ATM. I will have to stick with him for GW2, they have Hull so all is not lost .... Yet.

Kind of boring hearing people moan about Bojan... he looked bright and you'd have him as a third striker

giroud didn't score, Bony, Adebayor, many didn't

you get what you pay for.

Exactly, look at those Forwards who matched Bojan for points - No one on here is crying over Pelle/Remy etc. He was, for the money, a very valid 3rd forward pick - He deserves a GW2 chance against Hull.

      1) Mata's opening fixtures are too good, Silva's aren't amazing. Monitor against Sunderland.

      2) Bojan played 90 minutes so heavily in Hughes plans, plus stoke have great fixtures. Wait till GW3 on this one?

      3) Maybe best idea, leave till GW3 and you could downgrade Eriksen to a performing 6.0-7.0 (if poor again) and upgrade Bojan if you want?

I think so, don't blow your beans too early. I think Eriksen is a good (occasionally great) player, as is Bojan and Mata. Wouldn't surprise me if all 3 scored good points this weekend with West Ham, Hull and Sunderland as opponents respectively.

    Mata, Rambo, Hazard, Siggy, Henderson
    Costa, Rooney (Nugent)

    to this:

    McGregor (Myhill)
Debuchy, Chester, Dier, Jagielka, Van Aanholt
Rambo, Sterling, Hazard, Siggy , Henderson
    Rooney, Costa (Nugent)

Basically swap around my defence as well as Mata to Sterling.

Yeah except I wouldn't have Begovic in goal with no rotating partnership, he will probably only keep a clean sheet every 4/5 games or something. Wouldn't go with Jagielka either as Everton aren't even that solid at the back to be honest, and for his price there are cheaper and better options. Also unless you plan to play 5 in Midfield, I would degrade one of them e.g. Henderson to a 4.5M saving a good amount to upgrade Nugent within the future? Hope this helps 🙂

Get that players always have to be positive about their club but this is just ridiculous.

To be fair, I think the reporter phrased the question in a way that he didn't have another answer without pissing the club off.

      It's true.

Liverpool have a greater depth of squad than they had last season. Given suarez and last seasons squad vs no suarez and this seasons squad, they are better off.

It's like an aguero-less city; he was out half of last season and they still won because they had strength across the pitch and on the bench.

Liverpool now have options they didn't have before. They might not have a world class striker but they can make up for his goals and creativity in other areas.

It might take a while for the players to gel and learn the system, also it's a young squad so there is that. Between Markovic, Lallana and Lambert they can make up for the goals Suarez would have scored.

Not to mention strengthening defensively & in the engine room, which was ultimately the downfall of the team last season. Yes the defence still needs to learn to work as a unit, but I highly doubt Rodgers hasn't identified why they didn't win the league and vowed to work on it this season.

What do u think about Stephen Ward at Burnley? Could be great FPL player if he is 4.5. I am wondering will he be added as defender, because he can play as winger and striker, too 🙂

Burnley are so far out of their depth in the PL it is not worth having any of their players

Knee Jerk reaction ? YES, but is this team worth the WC? Need to take an hit with Jovetic if not..

    From

Who's the best striker to replace for Jovetic. 0.5m also INB.

Or is it worth Aguero and using the wildcard?..... Tempted to bring in Naismith for 5m and have 3.5 to reshuffle with WC? Brave or stupid?

    Current team

    Begovic

    Chambers PVA Caulker

    Sigurdsson Yaya Ramsey Mata

    Rooney Costa Jovetic

    Bench: Myhill, Bruce, Moore, Marney

    WC TEAM

    Krul

    Terry Cahill Robertson

    Sigurdsson Sterling Ramsey Mata (Cabella)

    Rooney Naismith Costa.

Bench : Moore, Hutton, CABELLA, Myhill.

    (would rotate Naismith)

    Yes or No for Wildcard?

    Thanks
