Our final look at the opening Gameweek of the season casts an eye over Chelsea’s attacking impetus after last night’s demolition of Burnley. Swansea’s in-form playmaker is much in-demand as the fixtures turn kind whilst United’s dismal opening day defeat has already sparked an exodus as Fantasy managers take stock.

The Player

Gylfi Sigurdsson spoiled the opening day party at Old Trafford to spark the first major bandwagon of the 2014/15 campaign. Prior to the United clash, we were concerned over a move to the right flank in Swansea’s final friendly, whilst the form of Bojan Krkic had many eyeing up a home/away rotation pairing to avoid the so-called tougher fixtures.

Sigurdsson’s goal and assist, allied with maximum bonus, underlines just how deadly he can be when fielded in his preferred position. Having struggled to find his form at Spurs, a return to the Liberty – where he averaged 5.7 points per game for the Swans in 2011/12 – has immediately reinvigorated his Fantasy prospects.

Moving up to 6.1 in price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Sigurdsson is poised to rise again before the weekend deadline arrives, but even then, that cost looks a bargain when you analyse his fixtures. Buoyed by their 2-1 triumph against United, Garry Monk’s side now face four home showdowns in the next six Gameweeks, as Burnley, West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle all roll up to the Liberty, and with a trip to Sunderland also included in that run, it’ll take nerves of steel to turn our backs on the playmaker right now.

The Team

Last season, Chelsea’s problems in the final third cost them dearly. Jose Mourinho’s side finished just four points behind champions City despite scoring over 30 goals fewer than their title rivals but last night’s display at Burnley suggests the Blues’ summer signings could be the final pieces of the jigsaw.

With Cesc Fabregas dictating play in the centre of the park and Diego Costa’s predatory instincts already in evidence, Chelsea were in cruise control despite an ineffectual display from Eden Hazard. Mourinho’s decision to hand Andre Schurrle the right-wing berth also paid off as the German slotted home an outstanding team goal – as we mentioned in this morning’s Scout Notes, Schurrle, at 7.5, had a better minutes-per-goal record than any team-mate last term, and if he can steer clear of his manager’s rotation, seems an enticing midfield prospect.

The form of their attackers is likely to keep the spotlight away from Mourinho’s backline right now. A defence that delivered 18 shut-outs in the season gone by looks primed for investment, but the arrival of Filipe Luis places question marks over the likelihood of rotation at the back. For now, home clashes with Leicester, Swansea and Villa in the next five Gameweeks should keep the focus on Fabregas and co further up the field whilst we look for signs of consistency of selection amongst Mourinho’s illustrious backline.

The Talking Point

You can’t say he didn’t warn us. Swansea’s win over United may have caused shock waves around the Premier League but it was perhaps no real surprise to Louis van Gaal – only last month the Dutchman admitted that “every club where I have been, I’ve struggled for the first three months”.

United were heavily backed across the Fantasy games heading into the opener with the Swans after a 100% record over the summer, including a 3-1 win over Liverpool. With injuries hitting hard, though, Van Gaal’s patched-up first-team look far from the finished product and Fantasy managers are already having second thoughts. Juan Mata is second only to the injured Ross Barkley for transfers out this week, with many trading out the Spaniard after a number of similarly priced alternatives such as the afore-mentioned Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all delivered.

With Wayne Rooney residing in almost 50% of teams, it’s perhaps understandable that a double-up doesn’t appeal to many, though the fixtures are still very much in United’s favour. Van Gaal’s team face just one of last term’s top eight in the next seven matches but, as Saturday’s stumble suggests, they are struggling for the form to take advantage of such a run.

A change of formation during the Swansea defeat also indicates Van Gaal is still far from certain over his options at the moment, and with less than two weeks until the transfer deadline, the Red Devils boss is apparently set to invest heavily in alternatives to his current crop. Another couple of performances like last weekend’s and the same could easily be said for Fantasy managers.

Ooh, my first hot topic! Unexpected! ( Pfft. Only reason I actually put that much effort in). I'd like to thank my keyboard, my fingers that endured the pain of writing such a bloody long post, oh and the failures of GW1 for giving me something to write about.

So what would be the best way into the Swans backline for 4,5?
Naylor? Was he just withdrawn because of that yellow card or is it a hint that he might not be as nailed on in the future as we thought?
What about Amat? Nailed on? Another reason that he's an inferior pick than Naylor?

JK. I find that hugely reassuring, he didn't get a shot off last night, but he had just as many touches as Fab.

There will be goals I am sure.

Leicester at home is a Hazard double figure haul kind of game

Look at his BAPs from last night

He got 24 in total and the only players that outscored him were the goalscorers and Fab

If he gets attacking returns he'll be a BAP monster

I only have 2 small quick questions.

    A) Points prediction for Sterling at the Etihad?

    B) And Ivanovic points prediction for Leicester at home?

Sterling is rising in price and I was planning on getting him for GW3 anyway, but to get him in for GW2 before his price rise, I have to downgrade Ivan to a 5.0 defender.

so for all the debate it turns out the Chelsea defender to have this week was Luis

He was the key to all those benched Chester's and Clyne's

I don't think getting players like Fábregas or Sterling is knee jerking.

First of all, they were popular picks to start with. We expected them to do well, and they did. Those without are now looking back and wishing they had started with them to make it easier for themselves.

It comes down to a matter of preference. I knew I was going to end up with Sterling at some point, and one of Fábregas or Hazard too.

Because of this, I now want to get in both of these players as soon as possible, as I fear for price rises and inevitable further returns.

I would rather buy Sterling at 8.5M and risk a couple of poor fixtures, than to then buy him at 0.5M more because I didn't think he would do that well in them. There is a whole season ahead. 0.5M is worth more than a couple of points (say if the player you removed, possibly Mata, did well).

We saw it with Ramsey and Yaya last season. They started cheap and their priced rocketed.

In this situation, we expected these players to do well, so their bandwagons will grow exponentially.

We will also be stuck with so called differentials rather than a player owned by half the players in the game. It could go either way, but at the start especially, it is better to go with the crowd a little more and differentiate later so you don't get left behind.

You need to look at stats too. Mata and United as a whole have looked poor. They had a decent pre season, but that means little. Their defence is in tatters, and the team is yet to gel.

Mata is not worth it right now with the wealth of players in that position who could replace him. Rooney is the only United asset right now who looks likely for half decent returns.

People can argue that there is no form after one game, but the players who performed well have done so in pre season, and previous seasons alike.

Yes, there are options we will go without. One week we may see Sánchez, Hazard, Yaya and Nasri do well, for example.

However, the options who have emerged from GW1 look great value, and are set for good returns. I would rather get them than risk it and go without.

    Anyway, rant over.

    Have a nice day 😉

Its not just about Mata though. Its about the alternatives that all did well and are rising in price. Mata is simply the unfortunate fall guy for the alternatives in form .

You are absolutely right that it's better to go with the crowd at the start.

Personally I'd be a bit concerned about making a transfer on a Monday night when plenty of teams have midweek European games etc.

There is also the point that while Sterling and Fabregas are, and always were, good picks, one gameweek does not make Yaya, Mata, Eriksen and Hazard bad picks. Mata I will admit would give me the most concern given how impoverished United look.

But look back to GW1 last year - who would have known that an Arsenal defender would become absolutely essential, and that Lallana etc would have superb seasons. Joe Cole went up in price that week, so did Soldado if I recall correctly.
