With Gameweek 2 now behind us, our attentions turn to the upcoming schedule as we assess the forthcoming four to six Gameweeks. Our first instalment takes a look at those sides with more favourable fixtures, with the Tyne-Wear duo and struggling United afforded reasons for optimism:

SUNDERLAND

“involvement

Having performed admirably in their clash against Man United at the weekend, it’s two points from two matches now for Gus Poyet’s side, and a superb run of fixtures awaits the Black Cats in the weeks ahead. The visit of in-form Tottenham to the Stadium of Light in two weekends’ time will undoubtedly be a tough encounter, but that fixture sits in between trips to newly promoted QPR and Burnley, which are then followed by home showdowns against Swansea and Stoke.

The main source of points for the Black Cats so far has come from the midfield, with goals from Seb Larsson, Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell inspiring their side against West Brom and United. The former has set piece duties in his favour and also chipped in with an assist on Sunday afternoon to boost his prospects, though is the most expensive of the trio at 5.5 (compared to 4.5 and 5.0 respectively).

Up top, Steven Fletcher is yet to get his scoring tally underway, though has been fielded as the most advanced forward in his side’s opening two fixtures and looks most likely to benefit from the creativity of those in behind him. Sunderland’s defence, meanwhile, have maintained their budget appeal for this season, despite accumulating 11 shut-outs in their last league campaign. Vito Mannone (who totalled a noteworthy 134 points last year) is still first choice between the sticks and on offer for 4.5, though for the same price, Fantasy managers can acquire Patrick van Aanholt, whose strong performances at left-back since joining Poyet’s side from Chelsea in the summer have attracted our attentions.

MAN UNITED

“involvement

It’s a shame that Louis Van Gaal’s acknowledgement that he’s a slow starter with new clubs is holding so true, as United struggle to justify our heavy level of investment. Nonetheless, a strong set of opening fixtures continues for the Red Devils as they welcome QPR and West Ham to Old Trafford in their next six, with trips to Burnley, Leicester and West Brom also holding plenty of promise for the out-of-form Red Devils. Everton’s visit to the Theatre of Dreams in Gameweek 7 will be their first big test of the season, but Van Gaal will be optimistic that, by then, his side will have begun to click and better the performances evident in their loss to Swansea and 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday.

The 12.5-priced Robin Van Persie made a somewhat unconvincing comeback against the Black Cats, and will be hoping to get back up to stride quickly to help his side overcome their current slump. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney remains the most popular player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with an incredible 46% ownership, though his team’s poor form has already seen over 40,000 managers jump ship since the weekend.

Subject to a mass exodus and a subsequent price drop to 8.9 last week, Juan Mata came back to haunt those who traded him out with a 10-point display against Sunderland – with the fixtures in his favour, the Spaniard could now cement himself as a key midfield option in the weeks ahead, though it remains to be seen how the potential signing of Angel Di Maria would affect the playmakers role in the side. Faith in United’s rearguard assets is understandably low, though Phil Jones’ displays in the first couple of Gameweeks have been reassuring, with an assist against Swansea indicative of his superior appeal over his defensive team-mates.

SOUTHAMPTON

“involvement

An opening-day defeat to Liverpool may not have been the ideal start for new manager Ronald Koeman, but the Saints performed well enough to convince many of their doubters that the season ahead may not be as doom-and-gloom as many had predicted. Whilst last Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate with West Brom was hardly full of attacking verve, a clean sheet and first point of the campaign for Koeman’s side should give them some momentum ahead of a strong set of upcoming fixtures. Home matches against Newcastle, QPR and Sunderland hold plenty of promise for further defensive returns, with trips to West Ham, Swansea and Tottenham also featuring in their next six.

Currently the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL, Nathaniel Clyne burst onto radars with a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend, though it was Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida who were the main beneficiaries on Saturday, after picking up three and two bonus points respectively. Fonte may be the most expensive of the trio at 5.5, but his penchant for acquiring bonus points, allied with his threat from set pieces, make him the most attractive asset in the Saints’ backline right now.

In midfield, James Ward Prowse will be looking to make the most of a share of set pieces, and at 5.0 the youngster could be a steal, whilst new signing Dusan Tadic will be hoping to build upon his debut assist against Liverpool. Up top, Koeman will be eager to see new boys Shane Long and Graziano Pelle build an understanding in the coming weeks – the former is up for grabs for just 6.0, and has the fixtures to cement his place in the side whilst Jay Rodriguez remains sidelined.

NEWCASTLE

“involvement

Two games and no goals for the Tyneside team doesn’t bode too well, but home fixtures against Crystal Palace and Hull City in the next three should provide them with a chance to get their tally up and running. On the other hand, a clean sheet against Aston Villa at the weekend has seen a number of their defensive options climb our Watchlist and, should they take advantage of their favourable fixture list, they may climb further still.

Between the sticks, Tim Krul is available for a mere 4.5 after a leaky campaign last time out and currently rests at the summit of our goalkeeper Watchlist. In defence, Fabricio Coloccini is available for the same price as Krul and picked up maximum bonus points in Saturday’s 0-0 draw to ensure he remains our defender of choice for Alan Pardew’s side.

Further up the field, Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere have offered plenty of creativity and drive over Newcastle’s opening two fixtures without any returns to show for it, suggesting that Siem De Jong may be the attacking asset du jour. Returning from a calf injury at Villa Park for the final 20 minutes of the encounter, the 7.0-priced midfielder came closest to netting for his side and gave Fantasy managers an impressive first taste of his talents.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
Managerless, surrounded by controversy off the field, and with two defeats in their first two matches, Palace’s fortunes aren’t looking too great at the moment. Nonetheless, the Eagles have home encounters with Burnley and Leicester in their next four to turn things around, whilst this weekend’s trip to goalless Newcastle won’t hold too much fear. Joel Ward and co will be confident of clean sheets, then, whilst Jason Puncheon – now back from a one-match suspension – has the platform to find the form that saw his popularity surge towards the end of last season.

Stoke
A late equaliser from Ryan Shawcross against 10-man Hull City on Sunday brought the Potters their first point of the season, and once they are on the other side of this weekend’s trip to Man City on Saturday, Mark Hughes’ side will be looking to kick on as their fixture list (LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA) picks up immensely. In goal, Asmir Begovic remains a popular pick with 9.4% ownership and could be primed to prove his worth, whilst Bojan Krkic’s legion of owners will be hoping the forward can shake off a knock and live up to his pre-season form by delivering the points.

Liverpool
Monday night’s defeat at the hands of Man City will have a few minds wondering whether Brendan Rodgers’ side really can maintain last season’s quality without a certain Uruguayan on board. Encounters with Tottenham and Everton in their next six will put the Merseyside outfit under the spotlight once again, though trips to West Ham and QPR, allied with the visits of Aston Villa and West Brom to Anfield hold promise for the attacking fortunes of Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom will be eager to press on after their opening weekend goals against Southampton. With injury worries at the back, few will be willing to invest in the Reds until they show some signs of resilience.

I just traded Steven Davis. His value was falling and he got subbed early in both his games so far (including half time against WBA). I would recommend JWP instead or if you can get Tadic that's probably the best midfield choice in Southampton. Reading on the Saints forums they all agree that all their attacks go through him, so its just a matter of time before he scores with the fixtures they have.

Thanks for all the input lads! Leaving JWP in for a few weeks, a feel he will do something nd go up in price.
May do Sturridge > Aguero in a few weeks, give it a bit of time

If you can find the cash you should upgrade JWP to a 7.0 like De Jong or 7.5 with Tadic or Cabella who all have good fixtures. I don't agree with the "holy trinity" strategy as I think there's better value in scoring midfielders like Fabregas, Sterling, Eriksen, Mata etc.

Too an extent I agree with you, but I don't think he's quite that bad at it. It'll be interesting to see how often (and how well) city go with the two Ferdies in midfield, with Toure in front though this season, I'll give you that.

Was the best player in the league behind Suarez last year and has been a major part of City's success before that, albeit not scoring as many goals. The dominance he possesses in midfield is unbelievable.

He really wasn't as good as he is made out to be. Ask any City fan that watches most game. He is clearly brilliant, but too often he chooses when he wants to play, can go missing for 90 minutes and just walk around the midfield far too often.

My only city following mate thinks he's an absolute magician as a deep-lying playmaker. I'll admit he's a bit of a luxury player due to how lazy he can be at times with tracking back and what not, but put him next to a decently hardworking ball winner in midfield and you've got a great player.

I choose Ramsey if I was picking one now. He is only getting better, and unlike Yaya he tries his heart out every single game.

Of course, I am biased, and something that would come into my thinking is that he is 8 years younger, which is irrelevant to the original argument.

                    Toure can beat 2 Ramseys.

Bigger, stronger, faster. More goals in him. King of Africa vs Prince of Wales. Not even in the same league.

Yaya might have some motivation issues right now but when both 100% there is no competition.

Yaya is really only playable in CM if you're on the front foot. He's cost them in the CL over and over again the past few years. It's a joke really. Ramsey is easily the better player.

Who do you think would start above him in the 3 midfield positions then?

Lemme guess, based on your comments above, you'd pick Xavi?

I wasn't claiming that Ramsey wouldn't start, I was laughing at the fact that their central midfield was called shite which it clearly isn't.

Ramsey's a game winner and has a higher work rate.. still improving, tackles etc. Silva is more technical and skillful tho yeh

Ramsey is well ahead of Silva. I'd pay twice the fee for him as a United fan.

As a united fan, you will currently pay any fee for any player.

But seriously - Ramsey is a player united needs, silva not (di Maria, mata). So not really good example

Not exactly true considering I don't rate Mata. Even if we had Vidal right now I'd still pay twice the fee for Ramsey. He does everything at a ridiculously high level.

I am the biggest David silva fanboy on the planet, but based on Ramsey's performance I think that it's at least a discussion. Rambo has been amazing when he's been on the field.

To be honest, he really hasn't been amazing at all this season. Yes, he's gotten 2 goals in 2 matches but his performance as a central midfielder hasn't been up to par barring the goals. FPL wise, he's one of the best around but when comparing the sheer quality of the 2 players, I think Silva comes out ahead.

I really dont get people ranking Di maria and Sanchez top 10. 1 gear ago Ozil would have been in that list. I really believe that neither signing will be the revelation they are expected/hoped to be certainly not Di Maria playing wingback!!

I'm rating Di Maria based on his performance for Madrid, not his potential performance in a supposed wingback position for United.

Di Maria and wingback dont mix
I wonder if LVG will be sensible enough to change to 433 or something other than the abomination that is 3412

I'm surprised people are rating RvP so high, I just don't think he's the same player he was 2 seasons ago. Yes, he's still one of the best strikers in the league but I just don't think he still has that same hunger for goals as he had in his prime. He also had an ordinary world cup at best, missing quite a few good chances.

Geez Ozil has one "poor" season while still getting iirc 5 goals and 10 assists in the league and everyone forgets about him...

He's a massive luxury player. Just look at how poor he was when Coleman scored against Arsenal. He'll get his fair share of assists but he'll also switch off defensively to negate loads of those. I'd much rather build my team around Ramsey or Fabregas than lazy bums like Toure or Ozil.

I'm gonna do this from the perspective of a starting XI, if I were choosing a team, and assuming full health.

      Sterling Aguero Hazard
      Toure* Ramsey
      Gerrard
      Azpilizueta Kompany Terry Coleman
      Courtois

      * If Toure isn't willing to work hard then I'd swap him for Fabregas.

-Chambers to PVA later, maybe Kelly if Palace sort it out

Guys, I have a question/ idea for a weekly game. Please read on. (posting for different crowd)

As scout picks allows only 1 of the community member to pick the best possible teams for each pick, I was thinking of a weekly "Best Picks" game. This will work loosely as follows:

    - Each week, I will publish a form with all the formations & complete list of players
    - You will have to choose your "picks" from a drop down menu (limited budget, similar to FFS picks)
    - Each GW, we will see whose team comes at top: You or the scouts when it's a level playing field.

Ocprodigy runs a similar draft game (with 1 player from each team & unlimited budget). However, I am sure more of you folks want to test how your picks perform week in-week out against the biggies of FFS on absolutely similar playing conditions.

So, please let me know if you will be interested in playing such a game each week. I have already designed about 20% of the forms but will complete it only if a handful of you guys will be interested.

Perhaps you could do a challenge, whereby we pick a player in each position - def, mid, fwd - each week, and the highest scoring player wins...

Budget constrictions may or may not apply, up to you...

Kinda like what TM245 did last year except there are only 3 picks, one in each position, and anyone can pick any player...

I didn't like how you got to pick first every week though... even with the discounted budget...

I'd change that rule... I think you should decide before hand that one person in the DZ gets to pick first every week, and then when you post it to the community, their picks are already chosen and displayed, then it's first come first served..

I'm terrible with Excel myself. When I ran the comp, I went on the FPL site at the end of every GW and manually noted all the scores of the players people had picked.

There'll definitely be a more efficient way but it kept me occupied 😉

oh boy...I found out a way to do that very quickly..maybe it can persuade you to run the game again:

It may be one of those things you'll need to finish all the work and then post a link so people can actually play with the lineup. Once they see how easy it is I am sure it could become a popular side gig to the actual game. It's hard to sell a product that people can't see.

He said jovetic can play with anyone. So it's a hint that though jovetic plays in kun's position and man city play with 1 big guy either dzeko/beast, he will try kun and jovetic together. That's what others think. But he also said kun will play a few more minutes this week, therefore will again come on as a sub.

Okay, seems like this united thing has become a major issue...

    Begovic
Taylor, Caulker, Clyne (Jones, Van Aanholt)
    Ramsey, Mata Stelring, Siggy (Albrighton)
    Rooney, Costa, Dzeko

    1FT 0itb

I have dzeko and begovic issues, as well as united trio but i think a qpr home game in two gw's seems like its maybe worth holding for...

Any suggestions? Would be much appreciated.

My problem with Jovetic is what if Aguero fires and Jovetic fails, or if Jovetic fails and has ars CHE as the next two, and Adebayor fires (sun WBA) then it is another transfer you might need to make.

Then again if you have 2 FT's it might be a different story.

No CL for him. Monday night footy. Last game of the GW. Leic have conceded 4 in 2 games.

Let's wait for some injury news from BR. Moreno twisted his ankle. GJ surely is out. Although this might make them stronger!

Is it worth using a FT to get rid of Ferdinand or Kelly for Coloccini/Dummet/Naylor? Or better off saving and have 2 for next week?

Anyone scared about not owning Jovetic? I think he'll be good for the Stoke game but for the long-term I'm still unsure. Dropping Sturridge, Costa or Rooney is hard for me at the moment. All three haven't been given a fair chance by me.

I am. The only transfers I made this week are:

        Young>De Jong
        Terry>Clyne

Upgrading Jones to a Chelsea defender in GW5. I think Everton and City will score against Chelsea.

I don't have him but Yesterday or someday back Chirstina gave a good point that the players in City attack in herds so anyone can get a goal or two..there is no 1 players who is sure to get the points...against stoke maybe Yaya gets 2 goals or Dzeko or Silva or Fernandinho..so with City players there is always a risk

That it will and you have some marketing overlap in your profile so you will be better off than only tech people. In my B-school we had couple of IBM guys..and tons of TCS..and tons of Infy..
