As Branislav Ivanovic blazes a trail near the top of the defender rankings, it seems timely to put the position under further analysis by assessing the attacking potential of the Serb’s rivals. In this latest article for our members, we analyse the early-season data in an attempt to examine the cast of defenders offering the potential of returns at both ends of the pitch.

With Leighton Baines an ever present in such analysis, and new top flight arrivals Aaron Cresswell and Kieran Trippier receiving plenty of hype in pre-season, the attacking full-back shows great promise as a potential differential target.

This is compounded by this season’s changes to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus point system (BPS) calculation that has reduced the penalty handed out to players who raid forward to take on opponents. While it’s too early to confirm the impact of this change, it’s worth noting that four of the top five BPS scorers in defence are full-backs – right now, the dominant centre-back is not having it all his own way.

The starting point for our analysis was a custom stats table which captured a series of key indicators identified as important factors when assessing the attacking potential of a defender. We’ve chosen to sort our table by “Touches in the Final Third” in order to capture those defenders who have joined the attack most often. We’ve also included data that captures their effectiveness in terms of crossing and chances created, whilst also assessing Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) as a means of further examining the bonus point potential of the listed candidates.

Our custom table has been made public and can be accessed here. The table will go on collecting data each week, offering a constant updated snapshot of our analysis. For now, however, let’s examine the data after the opening two Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My rival transferred Aguero in for Costa... he has made 1 transfer, had exactly enough money to do it ITB that is no longer there... I'm sure of it.

Would be epic if Aguero is benched and Costa bags a brace! 😀

I think Aguero will play the full 90 minutes but won't score. Totally agree on the Costa brace though.

Thoughts on this wc team (changed it 5 times today). Planning to do Jovetic to Balo after game against stoke.

    Krul (Gilks)

    Vert Clyne Janmaat (Hutton Wisdom)

    Lamela Tadic Sterling Cabella (Marney)

    Jovetic (c) Aguero Rooney

This is probably nothing, but here's a potential word of warning over Chelsea's fixtures:

All six of their defeats in the league last season came on the weekend before a Champions League match. These were away to Everton, Newcastle, Stoke, Villa and Palace, and at home to Sunderland. Overall, in their 12 matches immediately before a CL game, they played 12, won 5, drew 1 and lost 6. The other 26 matches resulted in 20 wins and 6 draws.

This season, they'll play Swansea, Villa, Palace, QPR, West Brom and Newcastle on the weekends before their group stage matches, which sounds like a run of games you'd expect them to win almost all of. However, if their trend of resting players and saving themselves for playing in Europe in midweek continues, they might struggle to pick up as many points as they ordinarily would.

The problem lies in the difficulty of Chelsea's fixtures aside from these games. From now until the end of November, every fixture is either against a top side, or the match before a Champions League game. They travel to Everton, Man City, Man United and Liverpool, as well as facing Arsenal at home, so if they continue to struggle before Champions League matches, they may find it hard to make up the points elsewhere.

Of course, Chelsea were excellent at playing the bigger sides last season, and so this run isn't necessarily daunting for their fantasy prospects. Another factor to consider is their excellent record at home. Last season, they dropped points before CL group matches when travelling to Everton, Tottenham, Newcastle and Stoke. This year, however, the first five of their six group matches come after a match at Stamford Bridge, which may well mean that, even if their performance drops, their fantasy options should still be able to deliver the goods. Nonetheless, if Chelsea rest a couple of players and put in a sub-par performance against Swansea in a couple of weeks, it might be worth taking note!

Good analysis but Chelsea are stronger this year and Mourinho will have learnt from last year - esp as Matic is there to stiffen them up

Interesting. I don't think Chelsea's fixtures look great anyway, with City's soon to improve and Liverpool's looking fantastic after playing spurs, maybe it's time to look away from the bridge.

But I also have Alex Bruce. Will he be in the reckoning any more even if he stays now that Dawson is there? Should I just transfer him out to another 4.0 now and not risk him going down to 3.9m? I already have Dummett though and not sure what other 4m def is worthwhile...

oh well, he has dropped twice and I had a spare FT, has allowed me to play both Caulker and Clyne

          Great stuff on Costa though

              don't we're a shambles, he'll score

I brought Naismith in so I can play 4-4-2 this week then Naismith has nice fixtures

I'll likely do Mata to Sterling post internationals all being well, and have another FT to use if needed.

seriously though when was the last time u saw a Chelsea player actually getting injured??

All they do is roll on the ground and feign a knock here and there just to get touched by that Hot Physio of theirs

Would you do Terry, Dzeko and Costa out for a 5.0 defender (who?) Ade and Aguero?
