Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

Mourinho said that if Costa looked positive in training that he would play at Everton, or be on the bench.

He trained well, for the full session and had no issues. I cannot see any reason now why he won't play.

I think he said if he is fit he could make the bench. Its him or a 36yo drogba against a really decent side away from home.

      Tricky.

They drew 2-2 to LEI and lost 2 points against Arsenal, they haven't got started yet, and they won't get started against the Chels

Some places have twisted it. I watched it and he said 'play or be on the bench' and a couple of written sources backed it up.

Others are just saying on the bench, which is incorrect.

          See the Chelsea website

          http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2014/08/mourinho-press-conference-29th-august.html

‘In this moment I can’t say much,’ reported Mourinho before training started. ‘We are trying everything for him to play tomorrow. He didn’t train for the last two days, but today is the last day and we must make a decision to select him or not.

‘He has to try a light training session to see if the reaction is positive. If it is we take him to Everton to play or be on the bench; if the reaction is not positive today then obviously we don’t select him. Let's see.'

Exactly. I think that fuelled many to remove the him. The Chelsea website has the original quote, which is more reliable than 3rd party sources.

Sanchez to announce himself to the league
Schurlle to score a brace against the run of the play
Jovetic to blank (I have captained him)
Adebayor to announce himself as essential with involvement in all 3 of sp*rs goals.

Diego Costa has a niggling hamstring injury which has seen him practice, but obviously something is wrong, or it would not have been mentioned. Should one stick with him, or not?

If his history is any indication, the answer would be "no".

Many of you are aware that he's had problems with his hamstring in the past 1/2 year, or so.

In the Champions League semifinal vs. Barca, with a niggling hamstring injury, he lasted 16 minutes before being subbed out.

Not having learned their lesson, Atletico started him in the Champions league final in which he lasted only 8 minutes before being subbed out in a 4-1 loss to Real Madrid.

In the WC, he was extremely ineffective as he tried to come back from the hamstring injury, twice being subbed out for Fernando Torres and didn't even play in Spain's 3rd, 1st round game.

    I've transferred him out already.

    He's a walking time bomb.

seeing as rvp, sturridge, aguero, and costa all seem injury prone, there's not many long term options

Not caring about price I would pick at least Diego Costa and Sturridge. Both the lone man up front, both very direct. Then the 3rd is probably Aguero.

The Guardian Teamsheets think that Di Maria wi come straight in for Mata in a straight swap. Do we agree?

The criticism doled out to Louis Van Gaal is completely unwarranted. He is a top top manager and given the right backing financially, and the necessary time for the team to gel under his methods and tactics i'm absolutely convinced that they will be Champions next season.

Back-up, we need 3 strikers. Costa 1st choice then Remy, Drogba is there for the off the field impact more than anything

    A) silva ( don't know why no one considering him) - (H) to stock
    B) rooney - (a) to burley
    C) ramsey - (a) to Leicester

    1. HUMZAH96
      11 years, 11 months ago

For me it's down to Jov and Siggy

Which means you could go for Silva and Siggy (not decided which one though)
