Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Here's my team this week!

    Begovic
    Clyne Jones Coloccini
    Sigurdsson Ramsey Sterling de Jong
    Rooney (C) Sturridge Jovetic

    Bench: Moore, Marney, Baird, Gilks
Can use 2.7M ITB to upgrade Jovetic, de Jong or Baird next week or save my FT!

    Dilemma:
IF Costa and Guffran(excuse, drunk transfer last night). I will only field 10

so, would u have done a -4 to transfer out a 5m mid and spend 5.5. If Y, who?

Or just ride it out hoping they both will play.

Your 2 cents will be appreciated

I'm very conflicted but think I will go with saving the transfer and then dumping Bojan + 1 next week so I can get a more than £7.5M forward in.

Team for this week will be:

    Foster

    Yoshida
Coloccini (benched him last week - standard)
Jones (come on you piece of s**t c**t)

    Fabs
    Ramsey
    Sigurdsson
    Mata
    Eriksen (see Jones)

    Jovetic (see Coloccini)
    Rooney (EL CAPITANO)

Heaton ; Bojan ; Ferdinand, Pieters

Hi guys a little help would be much appreciated, I ended up knee jerking and decided to WC (which I now regret) my main issue now though is:

      Eriksen, Siggy, Ramsey, Fabregas, Sterling
      Rooney, Aguero (Naismith)

who would you have instead? I figured that he's 0.5 more than minimum, gets playing time and is pretty good incase of injury or a player gets left out for some reason.

    Rooney vs Jova captain:

    Rooney pros:
Pretty much guranteed 90mins (more chance than Jova)
    Proven consistent fpl player
    Plays promoted side
Should be boosted by di maria

    Cons:
    Plays at 12.45
    Not on pens
    Utd playing shit
    Playing away from home

    Jova pros:
    On form
    Plays easy opposition

    Cons:
    Most likely wont play 90
    Not on pens
    Has kun and dzeko competition
Not a proven fantasy asset (one good game)

Pretty tight but think im going for Rooney!

Key is versatility, LVG has went after lads who can play multiple positions.

As for Blind's best position, really will depend on how he fits into the League if he does actually come. In fact I'm pretty sure he played most of last season as a CDM, slotting into LB, LW or CB when required.

Left CM is where I see DiM, so Blind covers both Shaw and DiM. I suspect he'll end up being first choice left wing back and Shaw second string.

One more CM to go with DiM and Herrera is needed, and a right wing back better than Rafael but they don't seem to be targeting that position.

              1. Somalion
                • 16 Years
                11 years, 11 months ago

See this is all conjecture really. Di Maria could well wind up CM but we may also see a swap to 4-3-3 or 4-1-2-1-2 or some other formation that can get the best out of the current players.

Agree though with Valencia covering really RWB is not the worst area, a CB is vital.

Sure it's all conjecture but I read a piece by Jonathon Wilson today that says van Gaal is committed to 352 and Wilson's word is good enough for me!

I think Stoke have slightly better fixtures, but both have good runs tbh. New have tot & LIV back-to-back in GWs 9 to 10 but I'm nit-picking there a bit really.

Lingering doubts are from seasons past; never seen New as a solid defensive option but I suppose the gap between them and Stoke has narrowed of late.

Is it safe enough to do a crazy move such as Costa>Drogba + Ince>Di Maria for a bit of good viewing tomorrow (both games are televised) or am I just being stupid now?

I will be WC next week which is why I ask.
