Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    @WALSH

Costa>Jovetic sound good if I can also make the Ince>Eriksen transfer happen?

Or play it say in case Eriksen doesn't drop and just do Costa>Ade?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 11 months ago

Too much pressure being called out, mate 🙁

Don't really like Jovetic for a long-term move. I prefer Ade. I took a punt on Tadic at midfield instead and went with Ade as my route into Spurs attack. Hope this is helpful.

      1. M.I.A.
        • 14 Years
        11 years, 11 months ago

Lol take it as a compliment 🙂

Yeah my other option was Costa>Ade and Ince>Tadic but a few people said the latter isn't worth a hit.

Agree the above is better long term but I'm thinking I might WC next week so it wouldn't matter too much but even that I haven't decided on yet 🙁

        1. Walsh
          • 12 Years
          11 years, 11 months ago

I did Costa>Ade and Arnie>Tadic for a hit. Surely will backfire, but hits are fun and I play to have fun 😀 If you are going to WC next week then definitely do not take a hit this week though.

Good point! I am over thinking this way too much lol my initial pick was Costa>Jovetic and Ince>Erisken so guess I'll stick with that and pray for the next hour or so that Eriksen does actually drop haha

            Thanks for your advice 🙂

I think it's a decent enough signing. Strikes me as more of an O'Shea role player type but the O'Shea of old would improve us massively in CM or at LWB right now. And with all the injuries our CBs seem to pick up, his versatility should be very useful long term.

Carvalho is still the one I want. He's exactly what we're missing.

Nicee. I presume you're dutch, and will have seen him alot more than just at the World Cup. How would you rate him?

        1. Wouter
          • 11 Years
          11 years, 11 months ago

Yeh I am Dutch. I rate this guy very highly and this is not something a Feyenoord fan usually says about an Ajax player.

He is extremely versatile. For his entire career he played as a left back, but at the beginning of last season the Ajax coach decided to play him in a midfield role. That was an absolutely brilliant move as Blind is extremely creative, can spot a pass and being a full back has defensive/ball retrieving qualities.

Under Van Gaal at the World Cup, he played mainly as a LWB but also played one match as a LCB in the 5-3-2 system. Blind can spot long balls, spread out the play to both left and right.

I think it's a very good signing for United, as he knows how to function under Van Gaal in this system and can smoothly transition to a 4-3-3 system as he has experienced this with the Dutch team.

Rooney or Ramsey for the captain?

Had Rooney at start of week and then moved to Ramsey for most of it. But tempted to switch back.

For free? If so, it's hard to fault it

I would. But note that Remy has just gone to Chelsea so apart from Zamora, Austin is thr Hoop's only striker at the mo.

i might just captain colocinni because of the fear of a might 4 points from an attacking (C) opposed to 12 from a clean sheet

Did that last week with Terry. Got away with it but went through hell for 90mins.

I don't like watching matches that has my captain playing, I watch him more than the actual game

Haha same. Hate it, too. Nothing matters but where said player is positioned and what he's doing. Kind of hate it.

Nope. Sureley if you were going to sell one it would be the one that may not play?

Think Costa will play and I can do a lot with the 4m I'd get from the transfer, just weighing up the options :/
